Cambridge Honda does a good job on the selling side. They do try (a little too) hard to sign you up for Honda extended warranty and their finance mgr tries (a little too) hard to get you to finance thru them (Honda Finance). (They goofed up on the title.)
They may say that if you buy from them, you are eligible for extended 5yr/xx,xxx mile warranty from them. The service desk told me later that that 5-yr warranty is only if you do all servicing during those 5yrs thru them ONLY.
Their service dept is not as responsive after the sale as they should be. If you need any accessories or any dealer installs done, have them done to your satisfaction before you take delivery (or pay) for the van.
    Good luck!

$1200 over invoice - no way.

I just purchased an ex-cloth - $300 over invoice (which included destination). This was a cash deal - no trade - also got the Honda 2.9 financing and 7/100 warranty ($850 for the warranty). Got the sage brush pearl (which seems to be a popular color). You could easily do at invoice.

Just call around and get quotes - the inventory is abundant - lots of Ody's. deals are available. good luck.

Main question is if anyone has gotten quotes about adding after-market entertainment systems to their Odysseys. We got quoted $2199 for in dash DVD player plus two 6" headrest screens. Could add additional TV tuner for $200 more. Anyone have other quotes. Anyone use their TV tuner with any success? We've gotten quotes from other places to install something simlar for about $500 more with a more limited warranty.

I am in the northern suburbs of Chicago.

Also, anyone had any prices for a remote starter from the dealer? I know I can get one elsewhere, but the more I can get the dealer to install, the more goes on the warranty.

Was quoted $500 over invoice today on the first quote from a dealer. I know this is high and will negotiate further toward the end of the month.

Also, is getting the 2.9% financing typical for 4 years - are most dealers offering this?

Thanks for the Boston area dealer info. I know that Honda Cars of Boston has an inventory of 50+, Herb Chambers 300+.

Honda has dropped the lease price on EX's down to
$279/month, from $299. Does anyone think that
they'll start offering rebates to clear out the
'04's?? If so when? I don't want to buy early
    and miss out.

We purchased a new Odyssey over the weekend!

We pick it up this afternoon after the dealer has installed the transmission & power steering coolers we added.

    Here's the numbers:

    EXL-NAVI for $27,918.89 ($0.46 less than invoice).

Includes the base car + cargo tray, accent stripes, wheel lip moldings, splash guards, fabric protection, undercoating, & weather proofing. We very easily could have lived without some of these but they were already on the car.

The 2 coolers were $444 for parts & labor.

The trade-in was within $219 or 1.2% of KBB excellent condition.

Dealer fees were $399.25. We know this is high. However, they are in line with other dealers in the area. We also feel that the rest of the deal was very fair to us.

After getting these numbers, we called the other 2 dealers we were working with. Both said they couldn't get to that out-the-door price. The closest was $600 higher.

The experience was the 2nd easiest new car purchase we've made only behind a GM Supplier program purchase.

The dealer was in Louisville, Kentucky.

Thanks for all the great advice from everyone here.

    Hi Hein,

Thank you for sharing your information! You got a great deal.

I also live in NJ and am looking for an EX cloth with no options. Can you tell me which Honda dealership you used in NJ? Did you get the 2.9%auto loan offer by Honda? Is it for 3, 4 or 5 years? If I decide to lease, whould they be that cooperative as much as the cash deal? Did you buy your extended warrenty offered by Honda? How much did you pay?

    Thanks!

Negotiated with Madison Honda, then had my local dealer in Clinton match their offer. They were very reluctant to do so, but since I had the Madison offer on paper (email) they did not want to loose out on the sale. I did take a car of their lot (Midnight Blue). I do not think they would have matched the offer otherwise.
I did not discuss leasing with them at all, so as far as that's concerned, I can't give you any info.

Open Road Honda in Edison quoted me invoice from the start but did not want to go below invoice. Very good experience with them though. Very courteous, open. They have many on the lot right now.

I did not get 2.9% financing (no incentives listed for the NJ area). Got financing through dealer at 3.74%.

Decided against the Extended warranty They did not want to deal on price (I guess there was not much room for negotiating left), so I'll go look for that elsewhere in a few weeks. If anyone knows where to get a good deal, please let me know.

I love the car by the way.

If you want the names of the salespeople I have dealt with, shoot me an email, and I'll give you more info.

Thanks Hein for the swift reponse. I'm close to Madison and Edison, so I'll try them first.

My wife is looking at the above Van. (45,000 miles)

The Dealer wants $ 23,000 OTD. It's Honda Certified (?)

    Any opinions are welcomed.

BTW - I love Edmunds, and am beginning my (wife's) DD just now as she just sprung this on me.

It is interesting to watch the deals get better monthly in this list stepping back about a year. The improved competition of the Sienna/Quest/05 Chrysler products seem to be driving down Odyssey costs big time right now.

Looks like deals approaching invoice is now becoming more standard.

Those looking at LX should note that $24980 sticker translates to $22038 invoice plus destination charge ($490) for a total of $22528, not adjusting for color or area. It also gives a true market value - or what others are paying in your area. Same check can be done for EX, EX-L, EX-L with nav, etc. A post up above noted to nail down a price on the basic car, then start the negotiations for each of the options you want to get. I look above and know I paid to much - at least $500 over invoice, but probably better than what the TMV shows at Edmunds pricing guide for my area. Nice van.

With the prices the 2004 Ody's are going for today, I would not pay $1 over $21,000 for that '02 with 45,000 miles. And I would have them upgrade the warranty to their best package that covers almost everything to 100,000 miles with $0 deductible.

    Good luck!

I posted up above on the deal I got (#5101). I'm curious if people feel this was good, fair, poor, etc. I know it's water under the bridge now but just to satisfy my curiosity...

By the way, as of day 4, we LOVE the Ody!
  • robr2robr2 Member Posts: 8,805
Are you happy with the deal? That's all that matters.

IMHO an under invoice deal sounds great on a great van. I paid MSRP 4 years ago and was happy - that was the going rate then. There's always someone somewhere who will tell you were taken. If you're happy, then it was a great deal.
  • cfocfocfocfo Member Posts: 147
This is such a great Web Site. The information available in a hour of research is incredible.

2 years ago my neighbors were waiting weeks for their Ody at Sticker price.
My wife wants one now, so I recommended the 2 yr old route.
I am pleasantly surprised to see, as Laundry Guy stated, that those Sticker days for the Ody are gone.
After just 1 hour of research, I see that it makes sense to go New (04).

Big Thanks to Edmunds and you posters !

When finalizing the deal, did you guys see Honda adding "Holdback", Ad Fees, or any other fluff onto the final price sheet ?

I want to be ready for that. (Altima was charging an Ad Fee that they refused to remove, - thus, I'm not driving a Nissan)
  • hogboyhogboy Member Posts: 84
None of those fees in southeastern PA or northern Delaware. If you want to see fees and list price go look at the new Siennas. Not only are they charging full price plus ad ons in this area they are also giving you less than wholesale on your trade. Nice van, too pricey for me. The Toyota sales manager couldn't understand why I wouldn't want to pay $4,400.00 more for his Toyota over the Odyssey. Needless to say he felt my backdraft and off to Honda to ink the deal.

None of these fees in southern Indiana / northern Kentucky either.

  • laundryguylaundryguy Member Posts: 89
Sounds like a new twist to wring you of some money. In Wisconsin, the preparation fees seem extremely low (I think $100 or less to buy the car and arrange financing) and there is no ad fee line item in the contract. Coincidentally, I have seen more Honda Odyssey ads in the last 2 weeks than the last 2 years combined.
  • laundryguylaundryguy Member Posts: 89
Does anyone out there really know what the average dealer is paying for interest to hold a car on his lot month to month? You read alot that everyone says buying the last 4 days of the month is the best strategy, assuming the car you want is sitting on that particular dealers lot. If the motivation for the dealer is trying to sll more cars period at any price to increase his sales quota so he can sell lots of 2005's at MSRP down the road, then maybe buying time in the month matters none.

In the days of 8 - 9% prime, I think this was more powerful motivation for the seller. Not sure how it is now with the 1.5% prime. My guess is they pay no more than 2% a year APR because of their immense buying power or internal financing mechanism, which would be $40 a month or so for a $22032 invoice car. Anybody got their take on this? This was my motivation to buy mid-month and deliver as a birthday present to my wife as it didn't seem like I would be leaving much money on the table waiting.....

To also get that motivation from the dealer at the end of the month, I think the car/van you want must be on site. Having the car on site that I want just never seems to be the case for me. Last van relocated 190 miles. This one 160 miles, and for a color (Silver) that gets tagged as being worth less! I almost was able to bid on the one I test drove, but they sold it while on the test drive to someone else!

Really like the van - great value.

At Herson's Honda in Rockville, MD. I paid $300 below invoice ($26,990) plus the destination charge. I also had them delete the $100 processing fee. It was pretty easy to get to that price and, I suspect I could have pushed for more if I had the patience.

This board saved me a good bit of money. My friend, who bought one several months ago, suggested I should expect to pay about $1000 over invoice. Even Edmunds TMV had it about there. I read this board though and saw that most people were at or below invoice. A little research on here saved me big bucks! Thanks all.

I've heard very negative reviews of Herson's service department, however, so I'm not sure I'll go there for any of the service work. Any good dealership service experiences in Montgomery County, MD?

Here's the pricing I got (this was after dealing with several dealers for about a week):

    Price of the car: $27,500
    Splash guards: $117
    Wheel locks: $48
    Cross Bars: $163
    Fog lights: $445
In dash DVD with 2 headrest 7 inch screens & tv tuner: $2,200 (this cost $2700 anywhere else in Chicago).

Plus TTL, $60 doc fee. Also got 3.2% financing.

Thanks all for your help in these quotes! My wife loves the van!!!

An Atlanta dealership is offering a new EX for $24775. It is also posted at CarsDirect.com. Is this a good price for the vehicle? I was thinking that I could get the dealership lower.
  • gatorbandgatorband Member Posts: 12
Today, I just drove home a new 2004 White EX from the dealer in Orange Park (Jacksonville) Florida. The only extra option I got was the mud guards that I had negotiated into the deal for free. Here's the break down on the numbers:

    Vehicle (w/dest):$24,101 (edmunds price = $24,774)
    <Less Trade-in> <$4,500>
Dealer fee: $ 599 (they refused to budge)
    Tax/Tag/Title: $ 1,420.89
    TOTAL PRICE DUE: $21,620.89
    (price w/o trade, out-the-door: $26,120.89)

While I realize that I did fairly well price-wise, there were several major battles that I've had to fight to get this far.

    1) The vehicle I wanted wasn't on my dealer's lot, but there was one available at another dealer across town. (However, this unit was the only white EX (w/o leather) available within 200 miles of NE Florida!) Hence, I had to wait from Saturday to today (Tues.) for my dealer to actually get his hands on it. (My dealer's sales Mgr. claimed he couldn't get the other dealer to get off their butts on Monday and do the vehicle trade paperwork. (Or so he said. I don't know if it was a true story or they were just foot-dragging, but since its water under the bridge now, so who cares).

    2) At the time of making the deal on Saturday, the sales mgr. wanted to (as every dealer does) screw me on the value of my trade-in vehicle and tried to use a Kelly Blue Book price for it, which are about 10-20% lower than the published prices from NADA or even Edmunds. (I (and most banks that I know of) have always gone by NADA values for vehicles.) The trade-in car (1996 Accord LX, 5spd., 99K miles, non-smoking) was in impeccible condition with 1 1/2yr old tires and all req. maintenance (incl. 90K mile service, timing belt/water pump, brakes, etc.). I eventually got him to come up to the "low retail value" as published by NADA, at which point I considered it a small victory and quit arguing while I was ahead. (I plan to check out the used car lot in the next few days to see what they're going to mark it up to, just for kicks/giggles.)

    3) Upon picking up the van today, as I was about to leave, I realized that they forgot to put the mud guards on it and when I brought it to another staff member's attention, they sent the Sales Mgr. over to me, who immediately got snappy & told me, point blank, that "they weren't part of your deal". At this point, I promptly/quietly pulled out my copy of the "We Owe" order form that was filled out on Saturday when the deal was written up and showed him IN WRITING where it was INDEED part of the deal. He then got this sheepish look on his face, swallowed (that fat piece of crow) hard, and said "ok, let me make a copy of this and we'll get them put on for you right now." He didn't even look me in the eye when he said it! (I'm still chuckling about sticking it to him, since we were standing in front of several customers in the waiting room when I zinged him!)

I've been using this dealer's service/parts department for nearly 7 years on my old car and have built a great relationship with their staff and am completely thrilled with the customer service, attitude, and attention to detail. As such, I plan to continue bringing my new Odyssey to this dealership for its service and any parts needs.

Conversely however, I had also heard lots of bad stories from friends/co-workers around town about the sales side of the dealership and was initially hesitant to even try buying my van there, but since they ended up giving me the best $$ deal, I went ahead and did the deal with them.

Now that it's over, all-in-all, I have to say that with the exception of the one sales mgr. who's in need of an attitude adjustment, it wasn't TOO terribly painful. The office people were very courteous (I brought my own financing), as was the saleswoman whom I orginally negotiated with. (even though she screwed up and should have caught the mud flap issue before it got as far as it did.) In the end, I've ended up with the vehicle that I wanted (and am EXTREMELY pleased with) for a pretty good price without the headache of having to sell my trade vehicle myself. Now if I can just get my wife to let me drive it once and a while!

I've always heard that banks like NADA since they can loan more money on their numbers.

The odyssey has a new trim which comes with the dvd player with cloth interior. We are in current negotiations with the Honda dealer. Here is where I am.

invoice $25,525 cannot verify since trim is new, They are asking 2% above or $26,035.50
    Taxes $300 SC tax rate
    processing fee $299
    mud flaps $147.00

For an out the door price of $26,781. I am converting from a 1999 Dodge Grand Caravan. The honda is a very nice vehicle.
    Any comments are appreciated.
They seem willing to deal much to my surprise
    Thank you in advance

Read about 3 - 8 pages of above posts, paying closest attention to those posted after 2/14/04 when Chrysler's 2005 Grand Caravan began showing up on dealer lots around the country.

On page 257 paulamama paid $26990 + $540 destination for an EXL with DVD which was indicated in the post as $300 under invoice. $300 under invoice is rare. Invoice is a little more common. Many seem to be paying $200 to $500 over invoice. Once again - analyze the posts above - you should be able to get an understanding of what to pay.

Regarding processing fees - these seem to be a way to basically hide dealer profit. I think mine was circa $130 to $170 and as such $299 seems high to me. Have seen as high as $599 on this site recently. Basically, add this to the price of the car so they are making more than that 2% they are telling you in addition to a 3% or so holdback on top of that.

If your negotiations are still open, consider trying to get this processing fee waved or at least cut in half. Some have done much better through crafty negotiation. Try to get two to three quotes - then you will know if you are getting a fair shake.
  • laundryguylaundryguy Member Posts: 89
Mud flaps were $121 on 12/18/04 - why $146 one month later makes no sense - seems like they hid exactly $25 bucks there. Be websmart and tell him he is overcharging for them. By the way, I checked, my processing fees were $111 which included loan origination fees, etc. $299 still seems high.

It's a great van - wish I could have added the DVD player at a lower cost to the LX trim - but didn't want the power lift gates, power doors, etc (my boys would bust them anyhow) that the EX had. I'll live with the strap in color TV for $150 for as much as we use it.

I never thought it would be so difficult to spend $25K. Dealerships(4) in my area have all had the same vehicles on their lots for 3 months now and can only quote $1200 over invoice. Either they are holding out on that or they aren't quite sure what the floor is and want you to come in with a price.

Seriously, what is the plan? Should one wait until August Cleareance or is an April purchase price going to be so much higher?

When is the best time to walk in and say "Would you take this deal"?

    $24K + Tax + Title cash deal

In discussions with KIA as well. Honestly, I'd rather give them my money and get free oil changes than deal with the jerky honda dealers.
I even get leather and a am/fm/cassette/cd player and plenty of other extras for $21k.
  • bosrbosr Member Posts: 1
We are in the process of buying a new Ody and were wondering what you think of this deal. (we have a 2003 kia sedona which the wife hates due to lack of space behind 3rd seat and no folding seat either. we realize we are taking a bath on the Kia but feel now is the time to get the deal with the honda since a year ago we couldn't event afford the lx.

    2004 EXL Silver for 26K
Getting 15350 for 2003 Kia Sedona 8K miles EX with leather, moonroof, spoiler (KBB is 16350 for excellent) they are also offering these kia vans new for about 22K with incentives (1,500 cash back) for them too. No market for a used kia apparently.)

We can't see driving the Kia for another few years only to end up with a car we don't like.

Any thoughts on the above deal would be great.

Should I or should I not?
Here is what I know so far! (From what I've read)
    - Bad transmissions from 1999 - 2004. Make sure previous owner has taken care of sched maint. and see if they have actually done a trans job yet or not!
(If I am driving one, what should I do to see if the trans. symptom is there?)
    - Faulty electric door locks on 1999 & 2000? Any more info?
    - Anything else I should look out for if testing one out?

    Many Thanks,

I just traded in my 2000 LX for a 04 Ex-L. I had a letter from Honda extending the warranty on the transmission. I would try to get a copy of that letter from the seller if they have it. If you buy off a lot, it might be tough to find. The transmission warranty might still be good for a while, we didn't have any trouble with ours. The van just got louder as time wore on, but we had zero problems with it over the 4 years. Good luck.
  • hislanderhislander Member Posts: 67
Bad transmission; thus extended warranty only occurs to Ody '99 to '01 (4 speed). From '02 and on, different transmission was used (5 speed). I don't know if there is problem with the new transmission but at least I did not receive any extended warranty letter when I purchased the '03. Can some one confirm?
  • georgezgeorgez Member Posts: 1
Well, this isn't a new one but I'd still like your input. It has 90K miles, EX, no nav system or fog lights. It's that gold color & is quite clean. I'm getting it inspected tomorrow at a Honda dealership; apart from the power door stuff & the transmission problems, what else should I look for? The asking price is $14900 CDN, which is about $11200 US. If everything checks out, is this a good deal? Supposedly, all the mileage is highway, which makes sense given the year. How long are the 3.5 engines good for? What about the trannies? I'm aware of the trans extended warranty, & it's applicable to my vehicle but it ends real soon...the vehicle also comes with the balance of warranty 5 years/120K miles (ends sometime next year).
    Thanks for any input.

I've been shopping around for an EX-L for a little bit now in the DC Area. From my personal experience (and from what I've read here and other boards) it sure seems that MD dealers can offer much better deals than Northern VA dealers.

Anyone have any theories/facts on why that is? (Just curious)

    Thanks!

My guess is good old fasion price fixing. The dealers in the area have agreed in private to hold to a price range.

Bougth my 2004 Odyssey EX at Fernandez Honda in San Antonio,TX Jan 31, 2004. Got what I believe was a great deal: $24,600+ttl, 3.9%financing. Came with 5 year/60,000 mile warranty.($50 deductible). Anybody else got anything better?

When I visited the dealer I went armed with lots of information. Had visited edmunds to get invoice price, researched hold-back (about $800), and had offer from other dealer in city. Negotiations were fairly easy, once I showed dealer info I had, AND visited them late in the evening, right before month ended. Do not purchase on impulse, be ready to leave without buying IF you do not get what you want.
