I filled out a request for a quote one night via the Edmunds site to 4 dealers (Faifax, Manassas, Woodbride, and Rosenthal (NoVa)). When I opened the email the next day, I had three email quotes on what I wanted plus a phone message from the fourth dealer. That day, Koons was the lowest of the four and I though the price was right (~200 over invoice). Koons was very nice and polite with no issues. After a test drive and 3 hrs, I drove out with a new van. I was very happy.

If I were to buy again, here some things I've learned:
    1) follow the Edmunds guide to buying a car
    2) call many dealers (I tried 4 but I would call 6 to 10), ask for the internet salesperson, and state you are ready to buy a EXL (with color preference) within the next 48 hours and need their best quote. All of whom I spoke with over the phone sounded equally mature as the Koons salesperson.
    3) Ask for the car price and the walkout price. Sometimes the car price is low and they add some fee to make the walkout price higher. Use the best price to get your prefered dealer to the same best price.
    4) I did not but would of liked to see the invoice of the van to see if the sales person was telling the truth (selling 200 over invoice). You can ask to see but I do not know if they will share with you.
5)Do not buy the extended care at the dealer the same day unless you do your homework over the internet. I am cancelling it tomorrow (paid 1295) since I found you can purchase it from ~900 to $1000 (7yr, 100,00miles, 0 ded).

    Good luck.

Thanks to all who posted their experiences in this discussion. We had a wonderful experience with the team at Jeff Wyler Honda in Cincinnati today. They let us borrow a car overnight and drive it all day. Then when we returned the car the discussions were over within minutes. No back and forth between the sales manager and the sales person. Here's the deal in a nutshell:

Oddy EXL: $26,122 (invoice plus delivery of $490)
    7 Yr./100k/0 deductible Extended Warranty: $900

The rest was the tax, title and registrations.

Best experience ever at a dealer, can't wait to go back and get the S2000 !

Let me know if you want to know who we worked with.

jelmarsh1's deal, post 4922, of $25,400 (incl destination) on a new 2004 Ody EXL comes to $722 below invoice; this seems to be the best price so far. I'm also in the market and would like to know if anyone's been quoted a lower price on the EXL. Thanks!
  • bradkapbradkap Member Posts: 12
1234, isn't invoice 25,642 ? That is what Edmonds says. So, then 25,400 is only 242 under invoice. Still a great deal !!!!
  • 12341234 Member Posts: 28
Thanks for your comment. Actually, invoice is 25,632 for the EXL but some folks include the destination charge in the invoice price and some don't. jelmarsh1's deal of 25,400 included the $490 destination charge so invoice + dest = 26,122 - 25,400 = $722 below invoice. I'd buy tomorrow if I could get this price. If you've bought the EXL for less, please let me know. Thanks!
  • bradkapbradkap Member Posts: 12
1234, I paid invoice. Perhaps I could have pushed harder, but I thought at the time it was a fair deal for all. My neighbor had just bought 3 weeks earlier and paid $600 over invoice, so I felt like I hit the jackpot ! If you are in the Indy, Cincy, Dayton,Columbus area let me know and I will share my research with you. By the way, don't pay more than $900 for the 7 yr/100k/0 ded extended warranty !

I am getting a quote for 25500 (Includes Dest.). I could not get this from any other dealer in SF Bay Area. Can people share their recent experiences. I would like to jump on this but just wanted to make sure this is the right price at this time. Also, is buying ext. warranty good at this time.

I am looking for a EXL-RES in the Portland, OR area. Can you give me some detail about which agreed to 27,700. Did you have to bring in a copy of a quote from Ohio. The best quote I have got is $1000 over invoice.
  • chasatorchasator Member Posts: 6
Just read post #4846 and I would like the person that posted that message to email me with the name of the dealer. I looked in his profile but could not see his email address. I am looking to by a white EXL and I would like to get at least $1,000 off MSRP. Thank you.

$1,000 over invoice sounds good. I am in Porland so can you tell me what city that dealership is in?

    total - 31286

Let me know if I did OK.
Thanks for this group I had quote from more than 5 delears. After I bought this car I had another dealer come up with 30900 on road.

Everything looks great but I am confused as to why you bought Gap insurance if you paid under invoice for the vehicle? Also You can find a similar extended warranty coverage for less money by searching online.

Other then that it looks like you did great.
  • cmjoncmjon Member Posts: 3
Can you purchase the 7yr/100k warranty at a later date? If so, can you purchase the warranty from another dealer?
  • kjellkjell Member Posts: 3
Took delivery of a white Odyssey EX with the DVD entertainment system. MSRP was $30,480 and walk-out price was $28,500 including a hood deflector and mud guards. I felt I did fairly well on the deal and the sales staff at the dealer was very nice to work with, no "pushy" sales tactics or other "mark ups".

Have not decided yet on an extended warranty, but they offered a 5 year for about $700, guess I will shop around a little.

For those who can wait, or are thinking about a trade in fairly soon, wait a little longer. I have seen the pictures of the new re designed 05 Odyssey. You can still see it's an Odyssey from the outside, it has a little sleeker design, but the overall "Odyssey look" is still there.

But ohhboy is there a BIG difference on the inside. All I can say is that the new Sienna and Quest will get a "run for the money" coming this fall when (hopefully) it will go on sale.

I live in the Atlanta area and got quotes from $1490 to $1700 for a 7yr/100k warranty (either $0 or $50 deductible). I called the Augusta/SC area and got quotes from $995 to $1200. Most were $995. They said they can complete the transaction over the phone and mail you the final paperwork. You want to make sure you are getting the exact coverage you expect. I went for the 'Ultra'(top of the line) coverage.
  • tcasboytcasboy Member Posts: 214
kjell: where did you see pictures of the 05 Odyssey and how can the rest of us see them? I'm very close to buying an 04 but have been thinking about waiting for the 05 as well. Thanks.
  • chasatorchasator Member Posts: 6
I just purchased an 04 Odyssey EXL-RES for $27,450 including Destination Charges. The dealer had three at that price. Business has slowed down so they ran an advertisment at this great price. The price also included splash guards and the cross bars on the roofrack. The dealer is Thomason Honda in Gladstone, Oregon outside of Portland. I am sure the 05's with this equipment will be $4,000 to $5,000 more and closer to the high end Sienna.

I live in the Chicagoland western suburbs. Shopping for EX-cloth for the past 2 weeks. Best deal that I have received so far is,
$26,500 on road (this includes doc fees, sales tax of 6.75%, title and of course Destination charges). This brings the base price of the van to about $24,600 to $24,650 (including $490 dest. charge). I want to get the metalic silver color. Edmunds says that base invoice for EX-cloth is 24,284, so I am getting the van for approx. 200 under the invoice price.

Is this a good deal or should I bargain some more ? I am finding that there are several Odyssey's sitting in the dealers lot (at the dealership) and there is another lot (offsite) where they store more cars/vans.

I have gotten this offer from the internet sales consultant.
  • esteemesteem Member Posts: 5
Forgot to mention that I have been offered free coupons worth $500 for service and maintenance of the van on top the offer of 26,500 on road for EX -cloth.
  • kjellkjell Member Posts: 3
I took delivery of a white EXL-RES and paid out the door, $30,658 includet was a hood deflector and splash guards.
I think we will see prices on the current Odyssey drop more as we are getting closer to the release date of the new redesigned 05.

My wife and I are in the process of purchasing a 2004 Odyssey EX-L. We are most likely going to be purchasing it from Lynnwood Honda in Edmonds.

I called them and spoke with an "internet account manager" he said that the MSRP was 28,980. He said he could offer me the EX-L at a Costco price of 27,906. I though in turn that it was a pretty decent price, but after reviewing all the posts, it seems as though the price isn't all that great. Is there anyone in the Seattle area, or for that matter in Western Washington that can give me any insight into their purchase, like where it was purchased, price and experience overall. The thing that it making it a little difficult is that I will be leasing it, but regarless, I still want to negotiate price. Any help would be great.

    Doc. Fee: $99.00
    Tax(6%): $1,400.73
    ----------------------
    Total: $24,746.23 ($1,000 less than a quote
I received from another Honda dealership 30 miles away.)

Currently there are strong inventories on Odysseys in your market area. Because of this, it's a great time to get a great deal!

This is after talking to about 4 dealers locally.

2004 Honda Odyssey EX-L with DVD for:

    27,850.00 (includes destination charge)

Two dealers locally wouldn't even match it. I even had proof via email from another dealer. They didnt want to go any lower than 28200.00.

Funny thing is when I first started looking a few weeks back, one of the dealers quoted me a Costco memebers price of 27,906.00 for an EX-L. The yesterday, they said 28,202 with DVD. Some of these Car Dealers are unbelievable. Just so locals know what I am talking about, the Dealership is Lynnwood Honda.

"manaraki" My wife and I are also looking for a 2004 Odyssey EX in the Seattle area. In your post, #4969, you said you contacted four dealers in the Seattle area regarding a price for a 2004 Odyssey EX-L. I am curious which dealers you contacted and which ones were good to deal with and were flexible on price.

    Thanks

Note: Consumer Reports Wholesale Price, 1/20/04,
    EX-L,(Invoice + Destination Charge) - holdback =
           (25,632 + 490) - 855 = 25,267.
3% Dealer profit would bring that to about 26,000.
Don't know what the DVD costs.

I just paid 27450 in Portland on an ad as I mentioned above. The dealer said if I referred someone to them, they would do another one at $400-$500 over what I paid.

Paid $27299 including $490 destination for a sagebrush pearl 04 Odyssey. Hopefully that is a good deal. Looking for the price for 7/100K warranty. How and who should I contact other than the dealer.

I just bought one for $27,575 in Alpharetta, GA (northern suburb of Atlanta). Do a Yahoo search on Model # 1804PKW and you will see the prices around the country. The best I saw was $26,981 (which is $1 over invoice) not including $495 in destination charges.
  • nit2nit2 Member Posts: 40
Can I ask anyone that has bought one in the Greater Boston area in the last month or two to share what they paid (before delivery, TTL) and who they bought from? Also, appears that many transactions are going at dealer invoice plus ~ $400. Any advice on negotiation strategy welcome. TIA.

    Hello,

Just picked up my 2004 Ody EX cloth interior, Havasu Blue color in Chicago suburbs.
On Road Price = $27,766 which included price of the van inclusinve ofdest charges, sales tax, title, doc fees, and the following accessories -
fog lights, back up sensor, door guards, splash guards, engine block heater, wheel locks, and cargo cover and cassette player. (all of accessories lumpsum at $1600) and the van $24,225, $52 doc fees, 6.75% sales tax, plus 800 dollars in coupons.

The salesman that I was dealing with was very patient and I basically negotiated between 2 dealers only. The sales manager was upset about selling the van for so low and even said that "this was a loussy deal and I will have to take a hit". But, he had to pay interest on the van and had to get rid of it and clear up the lot. There are several more sitting back there.

When I think back, I should have done a little
better job of neogtiating on accessories. But anyway, its a past now. I got 4% APR for 60 months after a 20% down payment.

Would greatly appreciate if you would share pricing & where you bought from. I understand one can get a BJ's price of $27,795 plus reg, title, reg.. Seems a little high compared to other national posts on this board.

BTW, are dealers flexible on accessory pricing?
  • tingwentingwen Member Posts: 6
    $24744 + DMV fee + Sales Tax + Doc fee ($50)
  • chasatorchasator Member Posts: 6
Wow! That was a super deal, even with taxes!
For the DVD, I recommend researching places like odyclub.com and checking the posts. I've seen some about the Audiovox unit etc. I've seen prices around $600 installed here in Portland, Oregon. Make sure you get at least a 7 inch screen. Don't know anything about keyless ingnition but do your research.
Enjoy the van, they sure are a pleasure to drive. Charlie

    I was thinking around $19,500.

Just purchased an EX-L this weekend. Paid invoice and got a few goodies thrown in. Went through the internet for pricing, however, seems like lots of dealerships are willing to deal on Odysseys here in Ohio (bought mine in Columbus, but got good quotes in Cleveland as well). Good luck to all purchasing.

That's incredible. You meant you got an EX-L for more than $2500 under invoice !!!! You're sure it's new right???
  • tcasboytcasboy Member Posts: 214
I have been looking for an 04 EXL to replace my 2000 LX for several weeks. I finally reached a deal today at a dealer in Memphis (Wolfchase). The sticking point in most of my dealings was the trade in value, and I just didn't want to sell it myself, so I had to bite the bullet a little on that. Anyway, here is the deal according to the official paperwork:

    Van Price: 27,002
    Trade: 13,502
    Diff: 13,500
    Doc fee: 250
    My Price: 13,750
    Taxes/tags: You bet!

Here's how I figured the deal, in as much as I stated earlier that I wanted to get the car for 300 over invoice and the dealer said he would sell it for 500 over invoice.

    Price: 26,522 (400 over invoice)
    - Trade: 12,772
    = I spent: 13,750 + taxes

I was hoping for a bit more on the trade, but what can you do. The new van came with the mud flaps, pinstripe, wheel locks and a paint protection package that they try to add to the invoice for about 800,(thats probably why they listed the price as $27,002). It was all included in my bottom line differential when we were discussing the deal.

I dealt with the internet manager and the process was pretty painless, just an hour and a half or so getting all the paperwork together and the van cleaned up for delivery. I would recommend the dealer and the internet manager for anybody looking for a new Honda in the greater Graceland area.

Again, thank you Edmunds and all of you shoppers out there for sharing your info and making the car buying experience a little bit easier for everyone.

Got quote from San Antonio TX dealer: $24874 for 2004 Odyssey EX. Should I jump at the deal?
Oh, and they throw in upgrade to 5 year/60,000 mile warranty.
You think I should? Being end of month, what are my odds of getting even better deal?
