With an invoice price on the Ody LX of $22,038, your offer of $22,400 is fair in the current market - if it were me I would even be willing to pay a couple of hundred more. I got an EX-L for about $500 over invoice the first week of September (including "doc fees"). Good luck!!

I paid $22517 for a 2004 LX Sage. Your offer is fair and the going rate in my opinion. I made it a point to remind the salesman about "end of year quotas" and that many are deciding to wait for the 2005 Ody. Therefore, the demand isn't what it used to be for the current model. (of course, I'm not entirely sure this is true, but it sounded good). :-)

I have an internet quote for $25309 delivered plus sales tax from an Atlanta dealer. Can I do better?

I just purchased a 2004 Odyssey EX L-RES on Tuesday from Independence Honda in Independence, Missouri. I sent this and other local Honda dealers a price quote request on Saturday morning which included the best price I had been quoted previously of $500 over invoice. The internet sales manager from Independence Honda e-mailed and called me within an hour of my request asking me what it would take to earn my business. Ultimately, we agreed upon an out the door price of $27,770, which also included a Honda Wind Deflector for the hood at no additional cost. The entire transaction was conducted over the phone and he even delivered the van to my house, 45 miles away from the dealer's location. I filled out the paperwork and the salesman walked me through the van's features at my house, so the whole process took about 45 minutes of my time without ever setting foot in the dealership. The absolute best car buying experience of my life. I would HIGHLY recommend this dealer to anyone in the western Missouri/Eastern Kansas area in the market for a Honda.

This doesn't give people a clear picture. Taxes and license fees can vary widely between states and counties. Same with doc fees.

It's better to simply state what you paid for the actual car and talk about other charges seperatly.

Also, folks....don't take everything you read in these forums as gospel.

    Good Luck!
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
When you are buying it's better to focus on what you have to pay to get out the door. Don't get bogged down on the line items.

And doc fees shouldn't be more than $50.

Congrats on the new ride, Jdcon!

It does not help me a bit if he just gave the out-of-the-door cost. Isn't it the purpose of this board. Like Isell said, I rather see him itemized his purchase. 27,700 for EX-L w/ RES seemed unreal, that would be close to $2000 under invoice; so there was some thing there that we don't know or he failed to disclose. Please itemize your purchase, jdcon.
  • mingnguyenmingnguyen Member Posts: 2
I think he meant the invoice price+ destination fee for the EX-L w/RES is $27470 plus ~$125 for the deflector(price from handaacsessories). So the total is ~27595. So it's about $175 over invoice. In that case it's a good deal.
  • isellhondasisellhondas Member Posts: 20,342
    I probably wasn't clear.

In Oregon, for example, there is no sales tax. Here in Washington it's a hefty 9.1%.

So if someone talks about how he paid XXXX for his Odyssey "out the door", he may live in Oregon and not somewhere with a sizable sales tax.

It's much more accurate to talk about the ACTUAL price paid for the vehicle itself and maybe itemize the other charges seperatly.
  • isellhondasisellhondas Member Posts: 20,342
You caught the same thing as I did. If there were any sales tax to speak of those numbers would have been highly suspect.

Also, sometimes there can be a trade in with an over allowance given that can distort things.
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
I agree more info is better.

Just don't get bogged down on negotiating every detail when you go to buy your own & focus on the final number.

In one of these forums someone talked about a 800.00 doc fee I believe. That's nuts!

But, when talking about the PRICE OF THE CAR, the other stuff can distort what a person really paid.

I am in Oregon (Portland area) and we decided we needed a minivan. I have Honda Accord and generally have been happy with Honda. So we decided to try Honda Odyssey. Checked out Toyota Sienna as well but the price is too high for the same product as Odyssey.

Saw quotes for 27770 for Honda EX-L RES (DVD) Odyssey 2004 on the Internet from a dealer in Ohio. Pitched the same price to around 4 dealers here near my home. 3 of them took it. Finally ended up paying 27700 + 300 for mudflaps + crossbar = 28000 + 113 dollars for the docmentation + state license fees ( Oregon does not have a state tax ). Felt pretty happy about it. The dealer was so unhappy making the deal that he wanted me to NOT talk about it. Seems like it is only 300 dollars above invoice( not including options). Got a gold Odyssey. My son loves the DVD. It is great. GOt a 3.69% APR for 60 months from my local credit union.

Well, we finally got rid of the Windstar today, upgraded to the Nav Odyssey. Test drove the Sienna, too, very nice but $7K more to get Nav. Sent out email to about 10 dealers, got 4-5 offers back. Good ones from Castle ($28250), Carr's ($28390), and O'hare ($28500). Schaumburg was asking $29.4k. Had a buddy who bought from O'hare last year and liked it, so went with O'hare and got them to match $28250, or about $331 over invoice. Deal done completely over the phone. Still had to sit through show about etching and undercoating, but that was over pretty quick.

Almost unbelievably pleasant experience. They threw in locking lug nuts and splash guards for free, and even took a razor blade to the city sticker and put it in the new van. I almost feel bad that we, as a rule, keep our cars for 10 years, because they were so good to deal with.

We did break our rule slightly, because the (only) eight year-old Windstar was up to 140,000 miles, but it was starting to nickel and dime us. Wife is ecstatic, now we both have new Honda Nav's! I have a 2003 Accord EX-V6 Navi.

I paid $26,352.92.00 which included mud flaps and wheel locks. I know many others may have gotten a better price but I first got a on-line price and used that against the dealer who wanted to make the sale. Also got a 3.69 rate from Honda.

I shopped over the internet for my Ody in ventura, California during Sept 03. At that time all of the floor salesmen in the area were adding an extra grand to MSRP. They were trying to push out the Ody's they had on the lot mostly 03's. If you wanted an 04' they had a list of inbound Ody's. Some salesmen would try to get you to give a deposit of $500.00 on an inbound Ody. I wasn't willing to do that, besides the color that I wanted (Sand Stone) usually wasn't on the list of inbounds anyway or had already had a deposit put down on it. I tried MY best to get one as close to invoice plus destination as I possibly could. A salesman told me that all the dealers out on the lot had raised their price up at least $1000 above MSRP because as of Oct 1, 2003 license fees were going to triple in California and alot of people were going to try to buy before that date. I got a quote through the internet fleet salesman at $830 over invoice, but the Sandstone EXL-RES wouldn't be in until Oct 8, 03. So I printed out his quote and contacted a dealer in Woodland Hills. I asked him if he could beat this price. He said if I could get it for that price that I should go ahead and take it. I asked him if he had the specific vehicle I was looking for in stock and he did. I told him if he was willing to sell me the one he had and he said yes. He e-mailed me a quote with the out the door drive off price and I was on my way to pick it up. 1/2 an hour later I was looking right at it. Now, the only thing wrong at this point was that the panel above the sliding door rail was dinged. He asked me if we had a deal, I told him we would after he took care of the ding. Long story short, I got it replaced with a genuine Honda panel that I watched him take out of the box.
The selling price was $28300, plus $2055 tax and $230 DMV's. I had my own financing through my employee credit union at a pretty low interest rate. One thing that I can tell you is once you have agreed on your out the door price DO NOT LET THE WOLVES (the dealer finance personel) SELL YOU ANYTHING THAT YOU DID NOT PLAN ON BUYING. You should stick to your original deal and take time think about purchasing other options or warranties. Doing so will not only make your monthly payments higher but will increase the amount you will be financing, hence more interest, making your total price after payments hundreds even thousands higher than you ever planned on, and there goes the monthly payments you planned on and the sweet deal you may have worked so hard for. Any questions or comments are welcomed, Thank You.

I see on Honda's web-site that they are offering 3.9% financing on the ODY. Is this the first time they've made such an advertised offer on the ODY?

Last december I bought one and they were offering 3.49% year end is a great time to buy.
  • vgadevgade Member Posts: 7
The total price quoted was $28,582.00. This includes the following with itemized break-down:

    * $500 over the invoice which is == $27949.00
    * State Tax == $300.00
    * Document fee [looks ridiculous] ==$299.oo
    * Tags for == $34.00
    * Free mud-guards, free alloy wheel locks.
    * Total == $28,582.00

Now the question I ask like every body else. Is this a good price. I appreciate any kind of feed back and help.

    Thank you all.

In what state are you shopping?

I'm curious as I've been receiving quotes of about $160 to $250 above invoice in the DC/MD/VA area. The dealers are then adding tax, tags, and a dealer processing fee (about a $100 or so). That $299 Document fee looks suspect to me. Have you asked what that is for? My understanding is that true "doc fees" should not be over $50-$100. Try a search on "doc fees" in Town hall. Good luck!
  • rbell2rbell2 Member Posts: 180
With all the inventory I have seen in B'Ham and Memphis, that price is a little high in the southeast. I am not sure where you are located. Including the doc fee, I would not pay more than $400 over invoice. Good luck!!!

Yesterday (12/23/03) we purchased a 2004 Odyssey EX-L. We paid $26,122, plus $85 (doc fee), $1,572 in taxes, $8 for license transfer, $15 for title transfer for a grand total of $27,802.42 out the door.
I shopped around here in Michigan, our local dealer wouldn't budge on his $26,600 price, so we went 35 miles down the road to Battle Creek Honda.
My wife just called me a short time ago, however, and complained that she got some pretty scary instant acceleration problems - it seemed like the cruise was stuck on (which wasn't the case, she was driving in town). She avoided a collision and then headed to a local dealership.
  • prasadperiprasadperi Member Posts: 40
I think that price is a little too high. If you go to College park Honda or Criswell Honda in Germantown, you might get it for invoice+200. Doc fees and processing fees are not included in the EX-L with RES i bought in Oct. I paid $27,500 plus 490(destination) and 100 for wheel locks and 100 for pinstripes. So the total I was added is 28,200+Taxes, plus Tags.
You should be able to remove the destination, wheel locks and pinstripes (save 700) as these are just straight away pocketed by the sales man. Don't fall for these. Edmunds includes destination in the invoice price of 27,480.
Wheel locks cost $30.00 on the internet and pinstripes is not citical to pay $100.00 for it.

    Good luck with the shopping.

I would like to buy a 2004 Odyssey LX, but I am also considering a Sienna CE. I want to know what I should expect to pay for a 2004 Odyssey LX. Thanks. By the way, I live in Northern California.
  • tcasboytcasboy Member Posts: 214
I don't know what the market is like in CA but in Memphis there have been several ads in the paper from local dealers advertising LX's at 22900, or just about 350 over invoice. Haven't actually tried buying one at that price, I'm looking at an EXL or RES.
  • kimo9kimo9 Member Posts: 71
I got my 2004 LX for 22,700. Deals are there to be had. I did everything through email.

The "annual sales quota" scheme worked for me in getting them to sell me the car. They knew I wasn't going to pay any more. you have 6 days left. :-)

Thanks to all who post here! I started negotiations today (12/26/03)at $25810 based upon lowest posts and was able to get down to $25490 + TTL for a '04 Sage EX-L (before trade-in). They might have made a little on my trade ($1100 for '92 Accord LX w/ 149K and several significant problems), but not much. I was obviously surprised to get this low, but I guess they were hungry for year-end numbers. If you are looking in Houston I recommend both John Eagle and Russell & Smith. Both were professional, courteous, and competitive.

I've narrowed my search to the Odyssey or the Sienna. Today I decided to go with the Honda EX-L w/ Nav because it was more affordable.

I got a quote from a local dealer (Anderson Honda in Palo Alto, CA) at invoice. $27,919. At 6pm I was told there were two in stock. I got there at about 7:30pm and was told they were no longer available. What is up with this? I realize it is possible that they be sold, but in less than 90 minutes? I have a hard time believing this is true. My credit union warned me that they may pull something like this because they thought the price was too low.

Last Saturday at a different Honda dealership (Stevens Creek Honda in San Jose) I wanted to SEE an Odyssey. I had not yet seen the inside. The sales person told me that they were closing early to go to their company holiday party so I would have to come back the next day.
It was 4:15pm on Saturday! How early do holiday parties start? He wouldn't even get a key to show me the inside. He insisted that I would have to come back the next day.

I thought I'd have to beat the sales people off with sticks, but it seems that I'll have to beg them to sell me an Odyssey. What is going on? Anyone else have this experience?

I'm starting to wonder if this is the Honda scam to get you to pay more by not having what you want, and not realize the actual price isn't lower than thier competitors.

The pricing info is very helpful and I see everyone refering to invoice. When someone posts $300 or $400 over invoice are we referring to the invoice price or actually the wholesale price?

If I pay 300 over invoice I am really paying about 850 over the dealers actual costs which includes the 2% holdback..

Thanks for all the great info.

Thanks to all of you who replied to my previous query. Here is the best quote I got from a nearby dealer: Total out of the door price for EX-Leather/DVD RES == $28,000.00. The price includes, $300 state tax, $39 tax, free mud-guards, alloy wheel locks, and home delivery. Probably I want to go with this as this seems to be a good price. He offered $200 over the invoice, and some doc fee.

I got a quote from a distant dealer who is willing for a out the door price of: 27,900 but needed to travel 170 miles to pick it up. He would not do the door delivery.

    This is in South Carolina.

hi there tcasboy, i found the pictures on this site http://thehollywoodextra.com/honda/honda.html

But you can do a google search, type in "05 honda odyssey redesign" and you will get a few sites with pictures of the 05. Keep in mind that some of these pictures are "study models" but overall they will give you a good picture on what the new 05 will look like.

    Good Luck!

I got basically the same deal as averagejoe1, except mine is Havasu Blue. I didn't do as well in the trade in department. I had a 94 Aerostar with 150K. They offered $300. I said I'd sell it on my own or donate it. They came back with $500 and I let it go. I don't have time or the patience to sell it my self, so maybe it wasn't so bad.

I didn't get the Honda extended warranty. I have mixed feelings about extended warranties, but I will probably get one - probably from one of the 2 big companies on the internet. Any help here?

We sure like this van. We loved our Aerostar, and it was the basic version with dual AC and cassette/ This Ex-L is light years ahead of it.

The catalog for the '04 Odyssey shows a Convenience Package that includes roofrack, CD player, and remote entry. I can't price that out on Edmund's New Car quote area.

Is there a way to add that? And is it a real package, or just a collection of assorted stuff that you add individually?

I tried to buy an EXL today at a Honda dealer in Memphis, but wasn't able to come to agreement on the bottom line. They were willing to sell the van at 500 over invoice but I was looking for more like 200 over and a fair amount on the trade, which is a 2000 Ody LX. They were offering around 11000 on my Ody but I was looking for more like 14200. We were about $2500 apart on the total deal after a couple of back and forths so I left the dealer with my offer to see if perhaps they can move closer to my numbers by the end of the month/year. I'm going to try another dealer tomorrow and see how much they will offer on the trade and how much above invoice they'll sell for. Stay tuned.

Maybe you should park your trade-in at Graceland or the Pyramid and sell it yourself?

Overton Park or Germantown would be ok spots too I guess :-). Oh yeah, you're even further out.

Lots of hassles selling it yourself, but I bet you could easily clear another grand or two over that trade-in offer.

Yes, I have also considered selling it myself, and that is probably my next step. I have meticulous records and the van is in very good shape, I would think 15K would be a fair price for a private sale. I know the dealer would turn it around for well above that. Just trying to cover all the bases. Thanks for the link.

i see no one has yet helped you on your LX inquiry yet, w.r.t. the rack (I think specifically that's what you're after???)

did you hop over to the site i mentioned for pricing the LX roof rack:

    http://www.handaccessories.com/odyext02.html

    there is also:

    http://hondaparts4you.com/start.cfm?make=odyssey

figure online, the price (minus shipping) for the rack is currently on the order of $200, for the CD (assuming single) is $200 and for the keyless entry about $150.

now factor in the labor you think appropriate to have the items installed.

when i asked a dealer to have the rails installed on the car for me - i worked with only the figure that it would cost me to acquire the hardware since i could do the labor myself if the dealer didn't work with me.

they can always say no... or yes. ;)

Just bought two EXL-RES white/red(one for myself and one for my brother)at St. Louis Honda for $27,650 which included pinstripes, mud-gaurds, and doc fees ($117). Assuming mud-gaurds and pinstripes are worth $63, that would put the purchase price at invoice of $27,470. Very happy with this transaction. Signing contract at 3:30 today. Any comments of extended warrenty costs would be helpful. I'm thinking of purchasing a 7yr 75,000 mile warrenty. What price are others paying? Thanks for any help.

congratulations on the new Odyssey! I have one and really like it. My dealer quoted me over $1100 and I ended up getting it for around $925 (if memory serves correct - March 2003). If your dealer won't "deal" on the extended warranty, remember, you can always buy it from another dealer. Use the dealer locator on the site and email some dealers telling them you are looking to purchase the extended warranty and negotiate from there. (I did pay separate for the warranty as I did not want to finance it - makes it even more expensive).

Good luck and welcome to the Odyssey discussions!
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
I'm pretty good about that too, Tcasboy. Too bad the dealers throw all that stuff out when they detail a car they take in trade. I'm not sure most buyers are savvy enough to appreciate evidence of regular maintenance either. Not savvy enough to pay what it's worth anyway. Oh well :-)

Over my lifetime, I have privately sold several cars and trucks, and have not found the experience to be bad at all. Maybe part of it has been luck on my part, but I try to price the car fairly (around low blue book), and they tend to move quickly.

If you price that 2000 Ody right...a very highly sought after vehicle, that has been well maintained with related paperwork, it will move fast. Spending a few hours to accomplish this is well worth making an extra 2 grand or so IMO. In fact, I found selling on my own a better experience, and far less aggravating than trying to negotiate a trade in price at the dealers.

When I got my 2003 Ody last Sept, they were offering me 4k or less on my 98 Caravan. I put it in the paper and sold it for 6300 to the first person that came to look at it.

Steve and robevts: I hear what you are saying about selling privately and avoiding the trade in. I have sold 9 car/trucks and 5 motorcycles myself since 1989, and only traded in a car once, back in 85 because nobody would buy it! I guess I'm kind of dismayed by the dealer (who isn't) preaching resale value when they are trying to justify you spending top dollar for a new car, but then they turn around and try to lowball you when you try to trade it in. Since I hadn't tried to trade in so long and was hoping for at least a reasonable offer, I was kind of offended by their insistence that the van was worth so little. All that being said, all I have to do is walk away, which I did, but it still irks me. Yesterday I went to another dealer and they tried the same tactic, insisting on rating the vehicle as "fair" on the KBB website as opposed to good or excellent. So I will either try to sell it myself, go with the Carmax estimate (which was 2K more than either of the dealers'), or wait it out and see if either dealer wants to talk some more before the end of the year. I've got time and the van is fine, so I'm in no hurry to get a new one (in fact the wife is against it), and I certainly won't pay MSRP like I had to (and don't regret) back in 99 for our LX.

I will have to pick-up my new Honda-Odyssy from the dealer tomorrow. So, do we always see 0 miles for a brand new one ? I remember my other cars when I bought them few years back. They have few miles - may be around 10-20 miles. Is it acceptable to have few miles on them ?if so, how much of the mileage is acceptable ?

what are the things I need to look for at the time of vehicle pick-up ? I do have a list of things, but wanted to know if I miss any. Thanks for all your great help.
  • vgadevgade Member Posts: 7
Yes there is a flat $300 state tax in SOuth carolina for any newly purchased vehicle. They tax will go up for relatively expensive vehicles.
