It's better to simply state what you paid for the actual car and talk about other charges seperatly.
Also, folks....don't take everything you read in these forums as gospel.
Good Luck!
And doc fees shouldn't be more than $50.
Congrats on the new ride, Jdcon!

In Oregon, for example, there is no sales tax. Here in Washington it's a hefty 9.1%.
So if someone talks about how he paid XXXX for his Odyssey "out the door", he may live in Oregon and not somewhere with a sizable sales tax.
It's much more accurate to talk about the ACTUAL price paid for the vehicle itself and maybe itemize the other charges seperatly.
Also, sometimes there can be a trade in with an over allowance given that can distort things.
Just don't get bogged down on negotiating every detail when you go to buy your own & focus on the final number.

But, when talking about the PRICE OF THE CAR, the other stuff can distort what a person really paid.
Saw quotes for 27770 for Honda EX-L RES (DVD) Odyssey 2004 on the Internet from a dealer in Ohio. Pitched the same price to around 4 dealers here near my home. 3 of them took it. Finally ended up paying 27700 + 300 for mudflaps + crossbar = 28000 + 113 dollars for the docmentation + state license fees ( Oregon does not have a state tax ). Felt pretty happy about it. The dealer was so unhappy making the deal that he wanted me to NOT talk about it. Seems like it is only 300 dollars above invoice( not including options). Got a gold Odyssey. My son loves the DVD. It is great. GOt a 3.69% APR for 60 months from my local credit union.
Almost unbelievably pleasant experience. They threw in locking lug nuts and splash guards for free, and even took a razor blade to the city sticker and put it in the new van. I almost feel bad that we, as a rule, keep our cars for 10 years, because they were so good to deal with.
We did break our rule slightly, because the (only) eight year-old Windstar was up to 140,000 miles, but it was starting to nickel and dime us. Wife is ecstatic, now we both have new Honda Nav's! I have a 2003 Accord EX-V6 Navi.
The selling price was $28300, plus $2055 tax and $230 DMV's. I had my own financing through my employee credit union at a pretty low interest rate. One thing that I can tell you is once you have agreed on your out the door price DO NOT LET THE WOLVES (the dealer finance personel) SELL YOU ANYTHING THAT YOU DID NOT PLAN ON BUYING. You should stick to your original deal and take time think about purchasing other options or warranties. Doing so will not only make your monthly payments higher but will increase the amount you will be financing, hence more interest, making your total price after payments hundreds even thousands higher than you ever planned on, and there goes the monthly payments you planned on and the sweet deal you may have worked so hard for. Any questions or comments are welcomed, Thank You.
* $500 over the invoice which is == $27949.00
* State Tax == $300.00
* Document fee [looks ridiculous] ==$299.oo
* Tags for == $34.00
* Free mud-guards, free alloy wheel locks.
* Total == $28,582.00
Now the question I ask like every body else. Is this a good price. I appreciate any kind of feed back and help.
Thank you all.
I'm curious as I've been receiving quotes of about $160 to $250 above invoice in the DC/MD/VA area. The dealers are then adding tax, tags, and a dealer processing fee (about a $100 or so). That $299 Document fee looks suspect to me. Have you asked what that is for? My understanding is that true "doc fees" should not be over $50-$100. Try a search on "doc fees" in Town hall. Good luck!
I shopped around here in Michigan, our local dealer wouldn't budge on his $26,600 price, so we went 35 miles down the road to Battle Creek Honda.
My wife just called me a short time ago, however, and complained that she got some pretty scary instant acceleration problems - it seemed like the cruise was stuck on (which wasn't the case, she was driving in town). She avoided a collision and then headed to a local dealership.
You should be able to remove the destination, wheel locks and pinstripes (save 700) as these are just straight away pocketed by the sales man. Don't fall for these. Edmunds includes destination in the invoice price of 27,480.
Wheel locks cost $30.00 on the internet and pinstripes is not citical to pay $100.00 for it.
Good luck with the shopping.

The "annual sales quota" scheme worked for me in getting them to sell me the car. They knew I wasn't going to pay any more. you have 6 days left. :-)
I got a quote from a local dealer (Anderson Honda in Palo Alto, CA) at invoice. $27,919. At 6pm I was told there were two in stock. I got there at about 7:30pm and was told they were no longer available. What is up with this? I realize it is possible that they be sold, but in less than 90 minutes? I have a hard time believing this is true. My credit union warned me that they may pull something like this because they thought the price was too low.
Last Saturday at a different Honda dealership (Stevens Creek Honda in San Jose) I wanted to SEE an Odyssey. I had not yet seen the inside. The sales person told me that they were closing early to go to their company holiday party so I would have to come back the next day.
It was 4:15pm on Saturday! How early do holiday parties start? He wouldn't even get a key to show me the inside. He insisted that I would have to come back the next day.
I thought I'd have to beat the sales people off with sticks, but it seems that I'll have to beg them to sell me an Odyssey. What is going on? Anyone else have this experience?
I'm starting to wonder if this is the Honda scam to get you to pay more by not having what you want, and not realize the actual price isn't lower than thier competitors.
If I pay 300 over invoice I am really paying about 850 over the dealers actual costs which includes the 2% holdback..
Thanks for all the great info.

I got a quote from a distant dealer who is willing for a out the door price of: 27,900 but needed to travel 170 miles to pick it up. He would not do the door delivery.
This is in South Carolina.
But you can do a google search, type in "05 honda odyssey redesign" and you will get a few sites with pictures of the 05. Keep in mind that some of these pictures are "study models" but overall they will give you a good picture on what the new 05 will look like.
Good Luck!
I didn't get the Honda extended warranty. I have mixed feelings about extended warranties, but I will probably get one - probably from one of the 2 big companies on the internet. Any help here?
We sure like this van. We loved our Aerostar, and it was the basic version with dual AC and cassette/ This Ex-L is light years ahead of it.
Is there a way to add that? And is it a real package, or just a collection of assorted stuff that you add individually?
Overton Park or Germantown would be ok spots too I guess :-). Oh yeah, you're even further out.
Lots of hassles selling it yourself, but I bet you could easily clear another grand or two over that trade-in offer.
10 Steps to Selling Your Car

did you hop over to the site i mentioned for pricing the LX roof rack:
http://www.handaccessories.com/odyext02.html
there is also:
http://hondaparts4you.com/start.cfm?make=odyssey
figure online, the price (minus shipping) for the rack is currently on the order of $200, for the CD (assuming single) is $200 and for the keyless entry about $150.
now factor in the labor you think appropriate to have the items installed.
when i asked a dealer to have the rails installed on the car for me - i worked with only the figure that it would cost me to acquire the hardware since i could do the labor myself if the dealer didn't work with me.
they can always say no... or yes.
Good luck and welcome to the Odyssey discussions!

If you price that 2000 Ody right...a very highly sought after vehicle, that has been well maintained with related paperwork, it will move fast. Spending a few hours to accomplish this is well worth making an extra 2 grand or so IMO. In fact, I found selling on my own a better experience, and far less aggravating than trying to negotiate a trade in price at the dealers.
When I got my 2003 Ody last Sept, they were offering me 4k or less on my 98 Caravan. I put it in the paper and sold it for 6300 to the first person that came to look at it.
Red
No leather...no DVD
All the other EX goodies.
