You might want to try using the dealer locator from Edmunds and emailing the various dealers in your area.

When shopping for my Odyssey, here is what I put in the initial email out:

"I'm looking for a 03 EX-L. I don't want ANY dealer add-ons. I will only negotiate off of the factory invoice price, not the dealer invoice or MSRP. Please provide me with the colors and availability you currently have with the price, destination charge and any other charges that you may apply such as a documentation fee."

This took care of many back and forth emails because I told them what I would pay for and how I wanted it quoted. It allowed me to negotiate one line - price of the vehicle - and not the other stuff such as dealer add-ons. Edmunds gives you the destination charge, the dealer should be quoting you the exact same dollar amount for that.

Also - if you are going to buy the extended warranty coverage from the dealer, remember that this price too is negotiable! I was quoted $1175 and got them down to $925.

I hope this was helpful - good luck!

Read my above post on emailing the dealers...when they email you back a price, you can compare it above the factory invoice price here at Edmunds. Make them give you a price first. When they respond with a quote, you can always send an email back that says "thanks, but I'm getting better quotes from other dealers in the area." When they asked how much, I gave them the best price that I had seen here in the discussion for my area.

In the dealers that I emailed, 3 came back with better prices. I negotiated a bit more in email, picked the dealer that had the best price (and had the color I wanted!) which for me was $800 over factory invoice (I bought a 2003 in March). The price was good/very competitive for my area at that time.

When I went to the dealer I printed out the email which quoted me the price, doc fee, destination fee, tax. That is exactly what I paid when I got to the dealer. No other numbers.

I have used Edmunds locators as well Kbb, autobytell, etc. However, and if I'm not mistaken, inevitably they only ask for your information and do not allow you to qualify the price. Even, if the locators do ask you for the price, I've not getting a bottom line price, only come on in and let's discuss.

That extended warranty price you mention, is that for the Honda 7yr/100,000 mile with no deductible?
    Thanks.

    Folks,
I just closed on my purchase on a 2004 Odyssey EX last nite. The factory invoice on this is $24,745 and I paid $150 over factory Invoice. My "Walk out" price is $26,700 including TT&L. I asked the dealer to fax me the "Retail Buyer's Order" with the VIN number and stock number. He faxed it to me and I paid him a deposit on my credit card. The dealership is actually 80 miles away from my home and the salesman is delivering the van at my home on Monday along with the needed paperwork.... I don't think I can't beat this deal. This actually beats the deal I had mentioned in my earlier message. The key is to look for dealers in the suburbs (i.e.nowhereland!). I had been talking to 4 remote dealers (within 100 miles) and they were all pretty close to this pricing but slightly higher!

Also, keep in mind that this is the end of month and third quarter. Some of the dealers are being very aggressive to hit their sales goals and will give away deals at invoice plus minimal profits. If they hit their quarterly goals, those dealers actually get 2-4% incentives on their total quarterly sales. So they will are willing to go after volume sales in these last few days of September. Go get them for the price you want to pay !

Is this a good price? How is the dealer's reputation. The price does not include Tax, Tags, Freight of $460 and a $100 processing fee. My out the door price is $29,215.18 which includes wheel locks, mud guards and floor mats if not standard on the vehicle. I sent an email reply stating that I do not want the dealer add-ons which adds at least $500 price and to tell me what it can do, along with send me a list of what's in stock. Should I ask for an agreement w/ the details to be faxed to me and signed by the sales manager before I go down there? Thanks.

I sent an email to Pohanka last night quoting the price that Warno received, $26,300 incl. destination (Ok, I tried $100 less) and received the following email this morning which said that the best it could do is $28,360. What's the next step? Thanks in advance.

Just don't believe everything you read on the internet,adalal...you can get pretty frustrated that way.

    'Nuff said!
  • SylviaSylvia Member Posts: 1,636
rbell2 - yes, that was the 7yr/100,000 mile.

adalal - email another dealer. I had a few that told me the same thing. I kept shopping around until I got a price that was competitive. I was able to save myself $1700.00 that way. Remember however, that the "deals" are going to be had on the '03's. I don't know how much wiggle room a dealer likes to give on new model years. As for the dealer add-ons - once they have them on, sometimes it is difficult to get them to take their 'investment' off the price. Things like cargo mats, etc. you can pickup off of http://www.handaaccessories.com

I dealt with Mike at Pohanka, very up front and professional, no games. Inventory is the great unknown in this game, the ads always say that the lot is full of 2003's ("but they're going fast!") but then you arrive and all they have is one vehicle, mauve with a spoiler. But plenty 2004's at MSRP . . .

I did have to compromise on color, first choice was silver but the only one available had DVD which I didn't want. Ended up with our second choice, sand, which the wife really likes and is growing on me.

I bought the 04 Oddy w/ L & DVD (LRES) last night from Odonnel Honda for $500 over invoice. I called the sales/fleet manager and told him the price I was getting from College Park Honda ($27,132)and that I know it was a good deal but could he beat it. I said that we would like to deal with you because of the proximity to our house and his dealer's reputation (I knew a friend who knew one of the managers). He did the math on the telephone and said that he could not. The best he could do was $500 over invoice. He also said that if I was getting the aforesaid price, that I should take it in a hard beat but to make sure that the other dealer was quoting the EX-LRES and not just the EX-L. After speaking w/ the sales mgr, I rechecked the email I received from the CP dealer and sure enough it had only said EX-L. I called the salesperson and left a message for him. A few minutes later, I got an email from the salesperson at CP and he said that he was quoting the price for the EX-L and not the EX-LRES. I didn't understand why at first but then I realized what happened. When I used the Edmunds locator, I was selecting the dealers using the preprinted info 04 EX-LRES. However, in my comments, I used the excerpt Syliva gave me above. It was late and I didn't make the distinction that Warno and and Sylvia were posting about a EX-L and not a EX-LRES. Therefore, I think the CP dealer came back with the EX-L price. Of course, the CP dealer price for the EX-LRES came back much higher price($28,480). So, I picked up the phone, called the Odonnel sales manager again and told him that my wife preferred Silver over Midnight Blue and the other dealer did not have Silver in the EX-LRES version (this was true) and if he would stick to the $500 over invoice price that he quoted earlier. He said of course and that he never goes back on his word. In 15 minutes, we were in his showroom and closed the deal in 1 1/2 hours. The dealership closed at 6:00 and we got there at 5:45 and were on the road by 7:15. Oh yeah, the price I paid was $27, 480, plus freight, tags, taxes and processing fee (Invoice for the EX-LRES ($26,980). I slept well last night. The key thing I learned was to call the sales mgr and give him the price I was quoted from the other dealer. He was the one with ability to make the deals. Once I got there, he referred me to a good salesperson but I was in constant contact with the mgr just to make sure that he didn't forget about us. Thanks to everyone on this board to make my experience as pleasant as possible.

I'm about to buy a 2000 Odyssey EX for 16K which
compares well with Edmund's and KBB used price.

Today's newspaper has an ad for 2003 new for
    $308/month for 48 months with $5000 down
i.e. $19,784. Fine print is only 5 available at
this price. Sounds too good to be true only to
    get me to the showroom.

Hello everyone, I have been trying to get a deal for a while on an 04 EX cloth, and the best I have found in North Alabama, Georgia, and even Vandergriff in Texas, is approx. $26,000, plus tax, etc., at Neil Bonnett Honda. You guys don't seem to like out the door prices, but with tax here being only about 2.5 - 3.5%, out the door would be $26,985. Sunny King Honda in Anniston, AL was a close second. We did not buy yet because a closer dealer (Tameron Honda, a so-called volume dealer but one that wants $1000 more) has exactly what we want, so I told them we would pay $27,000 out the door (or approx. $26,100 pre-tax, etc.), which they refused. I told the saleman to keep my name and number, and call me on Sept. 30 if they had not met their monthly quota and wanted to sell a van. On Friday (9/26), I had heard the other salesmen on the phone begging people to come in because they were 30 units behind this month. If they do not call, we will probably go order one from Neil Bonnett Honda, a much smaller dealer who gave us the lowest price without having to ask but once. They also said there price is good from now on. Before we buy, if anyone knows where we can beat approx. $26,000 on an 04 EX cloth in the Southeast, please post the dealer's name. Thanks a lot. I will post whether the dealer calls me on the last day of the month and gives me my deal. Thanks again. Tom

I have seen '03 cloth EX's advertised at Dobbs Honda in Memphis for $25,499. Have not seen that since they emptied the '03's. I would expect to see it again in the not too distant future. I can give you the name of the salesman I used - just send me an e-mail.

We (or at least me) harp on out the door pricing when doing your deal so you will focus on your best price without getting bogged down in ad or doc fees, mudflap costs or other little details.

But people rightly point out that since sales taxes vary widely they prefer to see your out the door price that doesn't include taxes or other fees that only apply in your location.

Have fun shopping - sounds like you have your ducks in a row. I think I'd call the local dealer once more late on the 30th and give them one last chance though :-)

Only one number means anything. The price paid for the vehicle. Taxes and licence fees vary, sometimes by a huge amount.

Do be careful of "doc fees" however. It seems some stores are now slipping in some hefty fees here.

Good point - anything more than $50 is suspect.

    Folks,
As I mentioned in my earlier message, I bought the 2004 model at $150 over factory invoice in central TX. I bought EX-Cloth, but the dealership was willing sell me EX-L as well at couple of hundred dollars over Factory invoice. Also, since the dealership is 80 miles from my home, they are actually having the van delivered to my home. Malikjb, If you are interested in more details, let me know.

10/04/03: Just bought our 2004 EX-L RES in the Atlanta area for $28,275 + $399 "customer service fee." Searched around this newsgroup for prices in the area and came up pretty close to what others have found. There were several dealers within $200 of this price, and some were asking sticker for 2003's! Note that many prices quoted in this forum do not mention if the hefty doc/customer service fee is included or not, especially for information regarding phone quotes instead of dealer visits. It seems that the dealer gets the doc fees as their profit and the sales person gets what they negotiate over invoice. In any case, I was able to find one without any expensive dealer add-ons despite many dealers saying it was "pretty much required." $1300 paint protection? $500 luggage rack crossbars? $500 mud flaps? Please give me a break. Just call it profit protection and be done with it. How about adding something useful like a CD changer?

    Good luck shoppers!

I know this is the same thing everyone is looking for, but I have about worn my patience trying to find a good deal. I line in Tulsa, OK, but I am more than willing to fly to Dallas or Houston to save myself a thousand dollars. The best anyone local will do is $29,5K for the EX-L RES I am wanting to purchase. If anyone knows a dealer doing better in a 5-state area of OK, please help! Thanks!

We bought our new Ody from Carr's Honda in Chicago through their internet sales manager and had a pleasant experience, although we haven't seen the car yet-it's being shipped. We paid $26,389, which includes everything but VA sales tax and tags.
We feel pretty good about the purchase, and figure we saved about $1500 off of prices around here (central VA), even with the shipping. We almost had a better deal with Criswell in Maryland but it fell through. Look out for those guys, they jerked us around quite a bit.
We are now going through the agony of waiting for our car, as the shipping company is taking their sweet time. I was surprised their are no discussion boards on that subject (that I can find), especially with so many people buying cars and having them shipped these days.

Give 'em hell and happy shopping!

I did call them. That was their 2003 models, and they are sold out now. However, I found two dealers in Dallas willing to do $28,250 and Mark Roberts agreed to match it... Then another dealer in McAllister, OK agreed to do $28,250 and throw in the luggage rack crossbars which I will need. Anyone have any feelings on those prices? Good? Can I do better? It is for the EX L RES...... Thanks!

I just bought a 2004 EXL for a very very fair price from Gillman Honda of Rosenburg
I had great service from the internet dept and the business office experience was one of the best if not the best I have ever had.
I will provide name details if you email me...
  • inky4inky4 Member Posts: 238
I would buy at Mark Roberts--they are closer. They will treat you right and even give loaners for all warranty work--which I never needed.
DOC fee higher in McAlister or Mark Roberts.
I cannot imagine them losing a deal over cross bars!

I live in san Diego and am looking to buy a 04 EX-L or EX-L-RES.

The dealer is Tipton Honda. Edmunds doese not allow mentioning of specific saleperson's name. I can email you if you put your email address here. (I myself don't want my email ends up on some junk mail list, so I prefer not to put mine here - sorry about that).
Or you could talk to their internet sales manager directly.

Thanks a lot for sharing the information. I'll try my luck there. Your success of getting a good deal is certainly encouraging. The best I can get so far is $1500 on top of invoice from Cush Honda for a EX-L-DVD.

Seems to be a great deal...Where are you getting this..?
  • mshidhayemshidhaye Member Posts: 2
Thanks for the feedback. It makes me feel a little better.

I got this deal Greenville, SC at Breakaway Honda dealership.

In fact, they did not have a "Honda" DVD entertainment system and they have installed an after market (Audiovox) system which is absolutely great !
For starters, it has a :

    a) 10.00 inch LCD (Honda brand has only 6/7 inch )
    b) DVD player can play MP3 files and
    c) Built-in TV tuner.

If you all get a chance, and if your dealer can do it, ask for after-market DVD system. It has a whole lot more features for the SAM price and Warranty !

    Cheers.

Most specifically to gac1yahoo...I live in the Seattle area and just purchased an Odyssey. We almost purchased one from a small dealership in Bellevue that sold late models of hard to find cars--mostly from getting them from Canada too---probably the same company you've looked at. We had 1000 dollars down on one and were very close to purchasing it when we decided to make a few calls around to some dealerships outside of the Seattle metro area. So we called to some places out east--Wenatchee and Yakima Honda dealerships both gave us EXCELLENT quotes. Everyone else we called just laughed at us when we asked them if they could beat their prices. We eventually went with Yakima. If you'd like the name of the rep and the dealership, I'd be happy to give it to you. Their prices were by far cheaper than anything you'll find in Seattle. Everyone knows how expensive everything is in the city! We were willing to drive a couple hours to Yakima to save over a thousand dollars! I don't know what their price would be on a EXL-RES, but their price for a 2004 EXL was $26,900. That was by far the cheapest we found.
  • gac1yahoogac1yahoo Member Posts: 7
Thank you very much for your help...I called the guys at the Yakima and Wenache...they are helpful. Can you please send me the salesrep name..? my email is: gac1yahoo@yahoo.com

The price I am getting is: $28965....

    Any advise..?

I have started looking for an 04 Ody--EX--Leather. I was contacted by Jim Coleman Honda in MD and they offerred $28,990 plus processing fee of $100 (what's up with that? he said it's a std charge--is that true?) and dealer add on's like pin stripe, door guards and fender protection which they put on all vehicles at cost. I may tell him I don't want these items. Any thoughts on the prices?
  • jamestrenjamestren Member Posts: 16
I think you can do much better than a $28,990 price. I called McDavid Honda in Dallas and they are pretty much willing to beat any price I can find. It took a few more calls, but I found a dealer locally to offer $28,200 for the EX L RES and that included the cross bars on the luggage rack (normally a $200 add-on). Someone in this thread recently got the EX L RES for around $27,600 I think. If you are being quoted $29 for just an EX L, you are getting ripped. Just go in with an offer of $27 for an EX L or $28 for an EX L RES, and if you are serious about buying, they will do it...... If not, someone close by will.

Dealers are less likely to negotiate when they think you are just price shopping and may not even buy from them. If you go in there ready to buy, they will come down close to $28 to get it done. Good luck!

BTW.. All dealers have "doc fees" or processing fees"... Yada yada yada. Just tell them your bottom line price including all fees, except for tag/tax/title.... They usually will try to tack that on after the sale and call it standard.....
  • maxsmartsmaxsmarts Member Posts: 4
After using the Internet and shopping at the dealerships, it was interesting to see how the pricing works. The dealer that I visited said it all depends on supply and demand and quoted me straight sticker on an 04 EX-L w/RES ($30,450 w/Dest). I got an internet and phone quote from another dealer of $29960 --final price including taxes, tags, fees, etc... Let's see them battle it out. I've still got to see who will give be the better deal and then deal with my trade-in. Keep ya all posted!

Finally went with O'Donnell Honda in Ellicott City MD. They were very professional and had the best price. I drove away with my sagebrush 04 EX-L w/RES including tax, tags, etc... at 29,700. I think it was a great deal! Their base was 27,720 on the ODY.
  • atalalayatalalay Member Posts: 58
Given that the current exchange rate is 0.75 to 1 it does not make any sense to do this anymore. At 0.65, it was thinking about it, but not right now... It is not worth the hassle!
