I totally understand what you mean. When we were shopping, salesman were ready to call the paddy wagon on me for asking such a "Outrageous price". However the price I wanted was only outrageous to them, to me it was a fair price because people were getting it in other parts of the country. Be stern, stick with your guns.

As for the waiting list, that a whole pile of cow dung. I've heard that too. Mine was that there was a 6 month waiting list, guess what, 2 months after I bought mine, the same dealer was giving the Ody's at my price. Wow, so it's like 1 year for us is 7 years to a dog, and 1 month to us is 3 months to a car salesman. Wow how time flies.

Stick with your guns, you'll get your price. Requires for you to be stern and understand that they aren't knocking on your door, YOU are knocking on theirs.

We got a "low as we can go" price of 26,270 on an EX (-1090 off sticker). We were going to take the bait, just needed a night to think it through. Next day out of curiosity I called a competing dealer and told them our figure. They called back 15 minutes later with a better price by $500. So I called a third dealer and they beat the second dealer by 270$. Now I am at 25,500 and thinking I better go NOW and buy the van. Wife and I talk it over after dinner, call the dealer to purchase it and someone put money on it and we lost our chance. So I call my original dealer, tell her we have a price of 25,500 and give her a chance to beat it (didn't tell her the van we were after was gone). She drops the price another 300$, so we bought the EX at 25,200 from our original dealer (2,160 below sticker). That is my long winded buying experience, saved an extra 1,070$ off of her original offer of 1,090 off sticker.

My family drove down from Madison, Wisconsin last night to pick up an Odyssey LX from Carr's in Chicago--buying from them was straightforward. We paid invoice + $500, $22917. Perhaps we could have gotten a bit closer to invoice, but it's better than we could do locally and they had a couple on the lot vs. waiting until September.

My question: They acted like they would be doing us a favor sending us the Certificate of Origin in 3 days. We paid with a cashier's check drawn on our credit union. Is it standard to put a hold of this length even on a cashier's check? We want to move ahead with plates, etc. since we're leaving next week on a long trip.
  • robsdad1robsdad1 Member Posts: 31
I also bought at Carrs and the Certificate of Origin came from Honda California not Carrs. It arrived here in Southeastern Virginia within a week of purchase.

I don't understand the question about the hold on a cashiers check you are talking about.

Hope it all comes together for you.

I need to know as to how much should I pay for an '03 EX-L and EX in term of drive out price?

    Thanks
  • rbell2rbell2 Member Posts: 180
You shouldn't have to pay more than invoice + $500 on any Ody (maybe a little more over invoice for the EXL-RES or NAV.
  • kschletterkschletter Member Posts: 13
Just visited a Honda dealer in Manchester CT. They had 7 or 8 new Ody's in stock (+ several used). Availability problems? I don't think so! I'm looking at Ody's in case we can't get our first choice (Sienna).

Please tell me how much you paid for EX-L with DVD player? Thanks

    Idahobadger-

I remember that guy. He was the one part of the buying experience at Carrs I did NOT enjoy... In addition to refusing to sell me the 7/100000/$0 warranty for the amount I had (in writing) from another dealer, he thought he was doing me a favor when he added a few extra days to the 10 day temporary license.

Robsdad is correct - the certificate of origin comes from Honda California - only AFTER the check clears. Bottom line, Carrs files for the certificate after they have their money. Seeing that this is done through their business office (a few days after clearing), not to mention that the US Mail is involved, then the Honda California group has to process the request as well. Mine did not show up for about sixteen days after the purchase... At which point the great state of Minnesota charged me a late fee for not getting my license tabs in a "timely" fashion.

    Enjoy!

I'm new to this board. I had a contract to purchase a 04 Sienna, cancelled my contract due to several bait and switch moves by the dealer (Bennett).

What and where is the best pricing in the greater Pittsburgh area?
  • stuart_esqstuart_esq Member Posts: 3
After working the local dealers, I found the best deal at Baierl in Wexford. Also, by chance, just saw a trailer unloading this afternoon, full of Odysseys.
  • bschue1bschue1 Member Posts: 3
I've read around these parts a rumor that the 2004 will basically be the same exact Odyssey as the 2003, due to the fact that the new '05 will be released earlier in the year (sometime earlier than the typical fall release dates). I have a couple questions:

    (1) Will the dealers negotiate on the '04's even though they are basically the same as an '03 model?
    (2) Will we be able to buy one somewhere in the range of $500 to $1000 above invoice?
    (3) Will the base prices go up for the '04's?

Thanks for any of your insights!!
  • dave2003dave2003 Member Posts: 17
    (1) Depends on where you live and the local supply/demand situation.
    (2) See the answer to (1) above.
    (3) My guess is probably yes, but only by a few hundred dollars.

I have been lurking this board for some time, so I am pleased to be able to finally contribute my purchase story.

As the lease on our 2000 Acura TL was to expire in mid-August 2003, and our family had doubled in size since the start of the lease, we knew it was time to buy a minivan, and since I am a Honda person, it was clear that an Odyssey was in order.

We knew that we wanted leather, and also knew that there was no way in he-l that we were going to put a video entertainment system in our car (that’s what books and Punchbug are for). That narrowed it down to the EX-L or EX-L-NAVI, whereupon my gadget-loving nature took over and we settled on the EX-L-NAVI.

I started seriously looking in mid-June, and soon confirmed what others on this board had stated; namely, that NYC area dealers have yet to come to their senses with regard to Ody prices. I started to look further afield – Chicago, Ohio, and Houston.

I made a great deal with a saleswoman at Goodson North in Houston for a Sage EX-L-NAVI at invoice/destination ($27,808), but at the last minute, my wife decided that she didn’t like the color, and wanted Black instead. Since Goodson did not have the EX-L-NAVI in Black, and was unable to find one, I had to start over.

I finally made my deal over the July 4th weekend with Jacobs Twin in Chicago – a 2003 Ody EX-L-NAVI in Black for $27,977, or $169 over invoice/destination. The saleswoman was excellent, and no garbage fees were tacked on. The only additional charges were $10 for the interstate transit tag, $15 in Cook County tax, and $52.50 for document preparation and express mailing, for a total of $28,054. Naturally, this amount does not include sales tax or state registration fees, since those are specific to one’s place of residence, and are thus not useful for the sake of comparison.

I hired an auto transport company to pickup the Ody at the dealership, and deliver it to my door for $800. The Ody was in perfect condition upon arrival, with a few minor glitches that Jacobs Twin readily resolved. First, the dealer had applied pinstripes and an adhesive dealer sticker to the vehicle, despite my written instructions to the contrary. Second, both the cargo and side nets were missing. Jacobs Twin reimbursed me $100 for the removal of the pinstripes and sticker, and sent the nets out by overnight courier at their own expense.

Considering the rarity of EX-L-NAVI models, compounded by scarcity of Odys in Black (only available since January 2003 AFAIK), I think I got a pretty good deal, even when shipping costs from Chicago to NYC were factored in. My total for the EX-L-NAVI and its transport to my home was $28,854, or $2,006 below MSRP. I strongly doubt that any dealer in the NYC area would have matched this deal in early July, or even now in mid-August. It is even more unlikely that any NYC dealer would have done so on a Black EX-L-NAVI. And certainly, no NYC area dealer would have done so without some serious haggling, which I was able to avoid entirely.

Good luck to all of you still shopping for an Ody, and feel free to ask me for specifics via email.

We bought from the Hartford dealer in CT. On paper our first choice was the Sienna too. It was so close it actually came down to the fact that we didn't like the dash on the Sienna. Also a minor point was the fact the the Sienna requires Premium Fuel. The interior of the Sienna just seemed to feel cheap. We have had the Ody since June and really love it.
  • andrewtran71andrewtran71 Member Posts: 840
Hey, the good news is in the Fall of this year, we will be able to buy the significantly updated NAV DVD for only $165 (I think), which I think is the 8.5 GB DVD to replace our outdated brand new NAV 4.7 GB DVD that came with our 2003 Odyssey.
Perhaps my home address will be listed now on the NAV--that would be cool:-)

So perhaps the 2004 models will have the updated DVD NAV:-)

But even with our outdated NAV, you can still get directions to most places. But the 8.5GB version will be better.
  • cguacgua Member Posts: 7
"our outdated brand new NAV" - gotta love that.

So will Honda merely need to replace the DVD disk, or will they also need to replace the deck itself under the passenger seat? I would assume the latter, since I was unaware of the ability of the present version of the DVD player to handle 8.5 GB disks. If so, is this a simple unplug and remove / install and plugin operation, or is it more complex?

Also, has anyone bought the rearview camera and/or self-installed same? Comments on the camera and/or process? My wife's unease with backing and parallel parking the Ody (by far the biggest vehicle she has ever driven) may bring her around to supporting my natural desire to acquire the rearview cam as an additional cool gadget to play with <g>.
  • andrewtran71andrewtran71 Member Posts: 840
It's just the "eject disc and insert new disc" kind of thing. All dvd players (NAV or not) will support the 8.5GB disc. Basically, it's a dual layer disc---like the movie DVD. It's one sided, but one digital layer on top of the other. Noticed how some movies are dual layer and most are single layer? I mean you can put over 4 hrs of movies on one side of dual layer disc. They don't have two sided dual layer disc that I know of, but that would be cool. The new NAV disc should be cool containing twice the information as the old disc. If only I know someone who will be buying it so that I can just make a pirate copy of it :-)

You do not need to do anything to the NAV DVD player itself, thank God!

As for the rear view camera, I was told by my car sales person that it would cost about $1,000 after all is said and done with parts, labor, tax.

That's a total rip-off since on other vehicles, the cost of the camera is like $200 coming from factory.

So I said "Forget the camera!"

I was lurking around for past 3 months and yesterday I purchased my new Odyssey EX (with Cloth. I wanted to share my experience & save a trip for those people who travel to Chicago or Ohio to buy Odyssey.
The dealer ship is O Donnell Honda, Ellicott City. I mailed the internet department through Cars dot com. The response was slow that they took 2 days to reply. But, the offer was very good. The following was what they offered..
The price: $24,603+Tags+ Tile. They added the destination charge of $460 for total offer price of $25,063+ tags. I think this is a great offer as compared to other posts that I read here for DC area.
If you need the contact details of the salesman, please do email me & I will be very glad to share the information. The salesman also promised to honor the price for anyone referred. This may be a perfect deal for people looking to buy Odyssey now.
I am really thankful for the great posts here that helped me to get a good deal on this great van. This van is really amazing. I owned an accord before & there is no difference in the way this van handles itself when compared to Accord. My family really loves this van.

We visited a Toyota dealership in NJ, looking for a new minivan. When we asked about the price of the '04 Sienna, the dealer said, 'No negotiating. We're selling at MSRP.' That's when I hightailed it out of there. We are now considering the Odyssey, '03 (in EX trim). What is the experience of this board in the NJ area? Should I consider PA dealerships? Thanks in advance.

Thanks to the other postings, I flew to Dallas from Little Rock, AR ($106 ticket and 5 hours drive back home) and saved over $2000 compared to local dealers. Bought from David McDavid in Irving for $300 below invoice. All negotiations done via email. Great experience. They picked me up at the airport. Took me two hours to complete the deal. My out the door was as follows.

    $26,871 EX-L RES
    $55.00 Document fee
    $21.75 Texas State inspection fee
$62.34 Texas State Vehicle Inventory tax

    $27,010 out the door price
Not sure if I got taken on the document fee and Texas vehicle inventory tax. Regardless got a great deal. If you, want details let me know.

Just purchased my 2003 LX and can't be happier. In Ohio this minivan is extremely difficult to get. I paid 23,016 and had the dealer add a cd player, mud flaps, 6 year 100,000 mile warranty with no deductible, tax title out the door price of $26,253. I think I did pretty well, and am extremely happy with the van. If it is anything like my accords it will be a long time beffore I have to purchase one again. My 90 Accord has 198,000 miles on it and the 93 has 179,000 and both still run great and no major repairs.

Congratulations on your Odyssey LX uc113. This is just the kind of deal I am hoping for. I wonder if it will be as difficlut to find an LX for us. I notice that our local dealer in Tucson has nothing but EXs. But getting a 2003 lx at invoice + around 500.00 is with in our financial reach. Otherwise, we may have to consider the smaller, but less exp MPV.

Please give me the details to your deal - who the salesman was, how you approached them about price in your e-mail, etc. You can get my e-mail address from my profile. Thanks in advance.
By the way - which manufacturing site supplies Dallas with Ody's? Is it the one in AL?
  • lapvnlapvn Member Posts: 455
There have been many post of 03 Ody purchases in the NorthEast area. Just go back several pages and you will find a good amount to give you some direction. I say go back about 2 months, and that should be good enough to start.

I just returned to Phoenix in my new Odyssey EX.
Dealers in Phx didn't want to deal. I emailed dealers in Houston and found that they were around invoice. I bought mine from Russel & Smith
Honda for $200 below invoice. The internet department was great to deal with. They picked me up at airport, checked out van, did paper work, on the road in 2 hours after I landed. $300
round trip and I saved over $1000 with that and the price of the van. The best part was driving the van. The more I drove it the more I fell in love with it. Driving thru Texas was even enjoyable.

Edmunds has the EXL w/RES at $27,359 for invoice. Your price is (almost) $500 UNDER invoice.

No, I hadn't tried those areas. I had emailed dealers around AZ and couldn't find any deals. I had read on this forum about another dealer in Houston but he didn't have any colors that I was looking for. That's when I started contacting other dealers in Houston and that I could get a flight for $150.

Desert Dog- So you are the person that was flying in from Arizona. During my negotiating with Russell & Smith in Houston they told me that someone was flying in from Arizona. They offered me the same deal but Dallas was closer to Little Rock(5 hours vs 9) and the deal was a little better. Regardless, we both got great deals. Isn't it nice to feel great about a car purchase. THanks Edmunds!

sstaatz- I initially contacted them through their website. It took 1-2 days for them to replay. I got a price on Tuesday and flew down on Friday. Give me your email and I will send you more info.

I had talked to McDavid in Houston but when I called
to put down deposit they had already sold
the one I wanted. I contacted McDavid in Dallas
and got the same deal but the plane ticket would
have cost another $100. I feel I got a great
deal and was treated great by Russel and Smith.
I may have to make another trip to Texas when
Honda comes out with their pickup.

What does the group think of using the internet price quote system some dealerships use? The sales people say the internet quote is 'non-negotiable.' Is it better to try and go in and have a face-to-face negotiation? By the way, I received two quotes for 25,860 on an EX through 2 dealerships internet division.
  • ajb416ajb416 Member Posts: 4
I spoke to a dealership in NJ and they said the 2004 Odysseys are arriving the last week of October. So if you can wait a few weeks, this info could be used to your advantage during negotiations. Good luck!

ah, that sounds better. I'll call off the dogs :-)

For general info, marking your email "public" in your profile isn't foolproof by any means, but it will likely attract less unwanted mail there than posting it here in the discussion.

And if you don't know, clicking on the member's name by the message title will take you to their profile.

Hi there, sorry to create a stir. Jpinsonjr, I edited my profile to include my e-mail so I would love to receive details of your deal if you don't mind the extra trouble. I still haven't heard from the Irving dealer. I did get a quote from Carr's in Chicago for about 300 above invoice, which I am considering if the Dallas deal doesn't come through. Thanks again.

    Zagafr,

I am in Richmond. We looked for a 2003 ODY EX in Richmond, W'Burg, Va Beach. All prices were quite high (near sticker) compared to prices reported in this board. We bought an EX-L in Cincy from Honda East. I am picking it up next weekend. Cost was $350 over invoice.

Just made a deal on a 2003 odyssey lx, with McDavid Honda in Houston. 22900 out the door (not including AZ tax and license). So far so good ...500.00 down and agreement is being fedexed to me in Tucson this Monday. My dad and I have had a road trip planned down south for a while (he's 79 y/o), so I will pick it up on my way back to Tucson mid Sept., and we will drive separate. Will give an u/d after I look over the paperwork. Many thanks to all who have posted there out of state buying experiences. I am saving well over a grand. Local dealers have been generally a bit proud of their odysseys. Also the lxs are harder to come by.

Has anyone used Carsdirect.com? They have the EX-L listed for 27111 including destination - decent.

I purchased a 2003 EX-L RES (Redrock) in Indy back in May this year and actually had a hard time finding the color/option combo I wanted. I ended up with a total purchase price of $28,600. This included mud flaps for $100 so the actual sales price was $28,500 - sales tax was additional and there was no doc fee.

The dealer was willing to deal more on the EX and EX-L models and was willing to go $500-$800 over invoice, respectively, but was more resistant to dealing on the RES and NAVI stating the whole supply / demand thing. So, $1,100 over invoice was the best I could get. Not great but fair enough and still $1,800 under MSRP which was unthinkable just a year ago... We have been very happy with it and the kids are in heaven so it was a good buy if not a great one. Any other Indy buyers with dealer stories / purchase prices similar to mine?

jpinsonjr - You got what appears to be the best deal of them all. I have NEVER heard of any dealer blowing out ODYSSEYS, especial those with the RES at invoice much less $500 below. Were there any mitigating circumstances, such as they had not sold a vehicle, any vehicle, for a month or more? Whatever the case, Good Job!

We can't really tell if "YOUR OUT THE DOOR PRICE" is good, because we don't know where you live. What is really the only important question is the price of the car alone. All the other stuff is different for everyone.

So my question to you is what is the price of the car, and are they forcing any options on you?
