Here is the deal I got:
White Ody EX-L $28,860
Mud Flaps $ 199
Pin Stripe $ 99
Wheel Locks $ 59
Rear Cargo Tray $ 99
3,500# Tow Package $ 1,020
MSRP TOTAL $30,366
Trade ($ 2,500)
Discount ($ 2,486)
TOTAL PRICE PAID $25,350 (including "fees")
I paid my taxes (OUCH!! in Tennessee) and put some money down. The balance was financed with Honda for 60 months at 3.9%. Better than I got over the internet with Capital One.
Overall it was a pleasant experience. I live in Memphis and purchased at Dobbs Honda on Mendenhall. E-mail me if you want more info.
Thanks for all the posts and e-mails I have received from folks on this board. It was really helpful!!
I hope we have 7-8 years of trouble-free driving!!
Happy motoring.

"Gold Package" pricing ... told this is a "Wood grain steering wheel", and Wood Grain trim throughout .... Is this a $4000 add on package? Any info and pricing of vehicle will be appreciated! This vehicle is the last on the lot ... $30,300 quoted price for vehicle only! Would a 2004 EX L be a better deal? Was shopping only for an Odyssey EX L w/ Leather .. 2003 or 2004 ... best deal!
If you want to find out the value of the gold package and also the woodtrim, there are several sites that specializes in actual honda parts and accy. Such as hondacuraworld and also handa.
In my opinion, I never like dealerships that sold cars and then tried to force pin stripes or what ever option onto the customer.
Thanks
I would run, not walk, away from that dealer. Go find a 2004 and get it they way you want it...Odysseys aren't particularly hard to find in most areas, provided that you're patient and willing to shop a bit. Good luck in your buying adventure.
You may want to think about a blast email.

No sales pressure on customers
at all. Just bought an 2004 EX (sage brush pearl) from
them today. The sales person I dealt with was
excellent. They tried to sell us the extended
warranty but never pushed. The vehicle we got
has absolutely no dealer add-on to it.
------------
2004 EX(cloth) : $25,148
Calif Tax: 8.5%
Document: $45
Calif License: $208
Calif Tire Fee: $5
and that is all we have to pay.
----------------
(PS: This 2004 EX, made in Alabama, appears
identical to the 2003 model. No
"hot" buttons, no new metering cluster, same
noise level, and with the
same single piece "no-split" magic rear seat.
Need to wait for 2005 if you want improvement.)
vehicle- 24,663
inventory tax- 62
doc fee- 50
total- 24,775
Now I unfortuneately have to go to to AZ motor vehicle and pay tax (7.6%) + registration (aprox 400.00).
Again, my experience with El Paso Honda in El Paso TX was super. The deal was almost entirely done by email and phone. There were no tricks or nasty surprises, and they did not even mention, much less push any extended warranty. They only asked that I spread the word as they have a few more 2003s to liquidate.
price for Ody (03 EX-cloth $24,788-24,988)) among local dealers (check out SF Chronicle for the last 6 months). They told us that was because they
had a low overhead cost (owner already owned the lot property.)
We had initially negotiated an "03" EX with them
with the quoted price in the posted message. When we arrived there later (we live far away from the dealership), an 04 was presented instead because
all the 03 were gone apparently, but they
said that they would keep their words for the negotiated price. It may be for some reason they can swing a special on the vehicle
we got that day. Anyway, we thought only a good and honest dealership would do this (keeping their words).
We did enjoy the easy going and no pressure
environment there, in contrast to a previous
purchase, where we had to deal with ~5
different persons inside a small cubical before the deal was done.
Sorry for the missing details in the original
posting and potentially misleading implications.
[PS: I have checked www.carsdirect.com prices afterwards and
interesting enough, 04 EX ($26,554) is listed as cheaper then 03 EX ($26,860).]
do you still have to pay the taxes? a couple thousand saved on taxes is worth it to me.
You can buy your car in any state you desire (subject to emissions rules, of course, but most cars these days are "50-state" certified). At some point, however, you are going to need to register that car in a state in which you maintain domicile. This is the event at which state and local sales/use taxes will be collected.
AFAIK, sales/use tax rates are always based upon the locus of registration. Thus, it did not matter that I purchased my Ody in Chicago, I still had to pay the NYS and NYC sales/use taxes, at a combined rate of 8.625%. When my mom purchased her Acura RSX in NJ this past weekend (after I negotiated a killer deal, natch), the dealership arranged for NYS registration, and collected the 8.75% combined sales/use tax attributable to Nassau County, NY, where she resides.
The above is the reason why I get so annoyed when people insist on discussing "drive-out" price on these forums. Please don't include sales/use taxes in your car's price - I probably don't live where you live, so such information is useless and misleading.
[Ad valorem taxes are a completely different matter, and as they only apply to a few states (e.g., Virginia), I am omitting them from this discussion.]
in 28150 + Tax and licence. I bought from Anderson Honda.Palo Alto.
Out the door price was 30754.
Has anybody paid lower than this.
I paid 1050$ for that( Initial price was 1999$).
How much others paid?
I'm considering HondaCare extended warranty (7yr/75k with 0 deductible). Found on odyclub.com and was quoted for $685.
Is it worth it? I plan to keep it for a long time.
Two related questions for which I'd appreciate input: how low should I offer and how long is what I see as a "window of opportunity" likely to last? My gut tells me that under $26k is possible. As to timing, I live in N. Virginia and hurricane Isabel kept dealers from moving anything this past weekend and, judging from emailed promotions and radio ads, has made them nervous. The next ten days might see prices go low while there still is enough 2003 inventory.
Was it bait & switch? Didn't think I'd read the fine print? Didn't think I'd blow the deal after driving all the way there? Had another buyer waiting? Probably. But I wasn't going to reinforce their dishonest sales tactics. I could have bought off the lot from another dealer at the time, but instead have wasted money and time on this dishonest dealership. They had several opportunities to inform me of the price change BEFORE I drove to Chicago!
Anyway, I do not recommend Ed Napleton Honda of Oak Lawn, Il. Go where others have been treated well, dealer reputation is important - I learned the hard way! BETTER LUCK TO EVERYONE ELSE!
Pricing : Guys when you ask the board for advice on pricing only state the price of the actual car. No other fees please since they are different from state to state. If someone from NYC is asking someone from Oklahoma about a price which included tax, the guy in Ok would say no since he only pays 3.25%. So the only thing that matters is the ACTUAL price of the car, NOT the out the door price, unless you want to break it down for us. In that case, we just skip over those details anyway.
North NJ Pricing - I purchased my 2003 EXL-RES from Yonkers Honda. You can email me and I will give you my entire speech on who screwed me and who talked my ear out.
You made the right choice by walking out. Yes expensive lesson but in the long run with you spreading the word of caution on them, it will cost them more.
Ya, I got to use the seat warmers on some of those cold April evenings this year, so I too am looking forward to that. I am getting lazy on the leather conditioner though.
As a ULEV (Ultra Low) this car is equipted the same in every state as far as emmisions go.
First some background:
One guy I tried to MAKE him put it on paper, all he can say is we can worry about the paper works once I come in. I said I was not coming in until I get my fax the way we had agreed on. HHmmmmm how quickly he back pedaled and say, he could not offer me anything.
Second: I mass emailed for the third or 4th time. This time using a NASTY email, very front and forward.
Ok here is how the negotiations went down. First the usual price and if the the Ody was in stock. Once that was agreed on, I told them, fax me the order sheet, with the pricing, with the salesmans signature AND an authorize sales manager or owner that approve the sale. The order form MUST have the pricing and no other hidden agendas, PLUS the VIN#. This was Monday morning. Receive the fax around 12, and my brother and I drove up after work to put in our credit card deposit of $500. We also refused to get off work early so we got there at 8:30 - 9, just to put some pressure on the guys and see if they were serious.
After all our request was met, why wouldn't they come through. That night after signing the deposit, they showed us the board where the VIN#'s are to show that our vehicles were in transit. One week later we had our car.
If they play hardball so can you. If they try to stick it to you, walk out. Give your business to someone more deserving. Someone who comes through each of our test deserves our business.
to GET IT IN A WRITING SIGNED BY THE SALES MANAGER.
This should be in the form of a sales order, with the name and address of the dealership preprinted on the form, with all terms correctly written or typed into the corresponding blanks, especially the VIN, sales price, and all dealer-imposed fees.
The VIN is crucial. If you don't have the VIN, you don't have a deal. Period.
Once the sales order is correct, sign it and fax it back. Insist that the sales manager countersign the order and fax it back to you. Now you have a binding agreement, one that most dealerships (reputable or otherwise) will not try to extricate themselves from.
Then I went to a couple of local dealers yesterday who have a several of 2004 models sitting on their lots. Classic Honda has about 10, First Texas Honda has roughly 7, and Howdy Honda has more than the other two dealers. They first started with MSRP less $1000. One of them is now ready to match the price, but I want to wait for another 2 weeks and here is the reason why:
Here is something I found out from a friend who works at the dealership. Honda gives their dealers 30 days for payment, hence dealers will try to get most over invoice for first 30 days. After the 30 days, they start feeling the pain and will get aggressive. Since the 2004 just came out couple of weeks ago, give it a couple of weeks more and you will see more competitive pricing on Odysseys. Also, dealers get incentives from Honda if they hit certain sales goals which are not transparent to the customers and are not reflected on the invoice either. That is incremental profit that dealers make on these Odysseys.
If you are a buyer in Austin or TX, you should be able to get Invoice based pricing. Just keep negotiating or start talking to other dealers over the internet. Classic and Howdy will play hardball, but so can you. If they try to stick it to you, walk out. Give your business to someone more deserving. Also, theie bargaining ability is coming down since Toyota Sienna is ramping up its production. Once the first 30 days are over, the Honda dealers will start feeling the heat!
throw them against the wall
looks like it would be better deal for you..
you konw nobody wants LX (in CA anyway :-)
thats why you getting invoice..
Two questions:
1) What price over invoice should I accept on this vehicle?
2) In order to get the best deal, what should be my initial offer to the dealer (i.e. my starting point)?
The one article I read said " you better be prepared with an offer that is as low as possible -- but still in the ballpark."
So I am trying to get the benefit of other's experience to figure out the lowest offer that is in the ballpark.
Thanks for your help!
Eric
