Finally took the plunge. I just could not outlast waiting on the right Sienna and getting a fair discount. I kept having this erry feeling that our '96 Dodge Grand Caravan with 110,000 miles was fixing to cost us some money so I jumped.

Here is the deal I got:

        White Ody EX-L $28,860
             Mud Flaps $ 199
            Pin Stripe $ 99
           Wheel Locks $ 59
       Rear Cargo Tray $ 99
    3,500# Tow Package $ 1,020
            MSRP TOTAL $30,366

                 Trade ($ 2,500)
              Discount ($ 2,486)
TOTAL PRICE PAID $25,350 (including "fees")

I paid my taxes (OUCH!! in Tennessee) and put some money down. The balance was financed with Honda for 60 months at 3.9%. Better than I got over the internet with Capital One.

Overall it was a pleasant experience. I live in Memphis and purchased at Dobbs Honda on Mendenhall. E-mail me if you want more info.

Thanks for all the posts and e-mails I have received from folks on this board. It was really helpful!!

I hope we have 7-8 years of trouble-free driving!!

    Happy motoring.

Congrats! Hey, you saved enough to splurge for ribs at the Rendezvous (I lived in M-Town for a spell back in the 70's and cruised highway 72 through C'Ville many a time).

I am curious if I will be able to buy a 2004 around the 20th of this month since that is about the time i will be moving back to Cali. I am not sure if I can get a 2003 or not so I am wondering if I will be in limbo.

Has anyone found any special deals on Odysseys in Alabama, Georgia or Tennessee, especially on 2004s? The 2003s are in short supply so we cannot find the navy blue. Dealers have the 2004s in stock and the price is only up $90, but they do not want to discount much. Any suggested dealers? Thanks. Tom

does anyone know the invoice pricing for the '04 odyssey's, esp the LX ?
  • eemeeeme Member Posts: 9
I don't have exact figures but it should be around $80 more than 2003 models. I just got a quote $27,092.xx for 2004 EX-L and I guess it is $1000 more than invoice.

In general, how much of a deduction off of the TMV for a NEW car that has miles. For instance a 2003 Odyssey EX with Leather and DVD, but has 7000 miles - How much should be paid below the TMV?
  • tcasboytcasboy Member Posts: 214
That van may have never been titled and is thus technically "new", but I would treat such a demo as a used car and go to the Edmunds, Kelly Blue book or the NADA used car price calculators to determine what an appropriate used car price might be. No way would I even let the dealer pretend that it is a new car. Also, how much off do YOU feel 7000 miles is worth? Decide, make your offer (if you chose), and leave your phone number and an expiration date on your offer. They will most likely call back near the deadline and stick firm! Good luck.

This is my dilemma ... What price for Odyssey 2003 EX L w/DVD .... with an added "Gold package" ... researched and cannot find
"Gold Package" pricing ... told this is a "Wood grain steering wheel", and Wood Grain trim throughout .... Is this a $4000 add on package? Any info and pricing of vehicle will be appreciated! This vehicle is the last on the lot ... $30,300 quoted price for vehicle only! Would a 2004 EX L be a better deal? Was shopping only for an Odyssey EX L w/ Leather .. 2003 or 2004 ... best deal!
  • lapvnlapvn Member Posts: 455
You said you were looking for an EXL, in my opinion, if you aren't interested in the Gold package and also the woodtrim, than this car can never be a bargain of any price unless the decide to throw it in. I understand that it is the last one on the lot, but we've always made recommendations here to get the car and the color that you want at the price that you want. You would only be making the salesman happy.

If you want to find out the value of the gold package and also the woodtrim, there are several sites that specializes in actual honda parts and accy. Such as hondacuraworld and also handa.

In my opinion, I never like dealerships that sold cars and then tried to force pin stripes or what ever option onto the customer.

Anyone bought 2004 models? Can you you share some information like how much you paid and where you bought it.
    Thanks
  • beechmanbeechman Member Posts: 36
Hopefully, common sense would tell you that 4000 bucks for wood trim and a gold badge package is a ripoff. The steering wheel goes for roughly 350 dollars give or take 100, not including installation...the badges, maybe 100-150 tops, again not including installation...the woodtrim, probably around 200 dollars give or take, not including installation.

I would run, not walk, away from that dealer. Go find a 2004 and get it they way you want it...Odysseys aren't particularly hard to find in most areas, provided that you're patient and willing to shop a bit. Good luck in your buying adventure.

Deal I made on an Odyssey LX with McDavid Honda in Houston fell through (see 8/27 post). After I made a deposit, the salesman did not follow up or return my calls??!! I got back to internet dept at El Paso Honda and all they had were EXs and they offered me a 2003 for invoice. I decided to cancel the Houston deal and go for it, as I was running out of time before my trip. I picked it up yesterday after going on a 2 week road trip with my dad, and drove it home yesterday back home to Tucson. El Paso internet department was great! They rolled out the red carpet for me. Totally no B.S. deal and they are completely pro. This is the way a car buying experience should be! Anyway, I am delighted with the van and am glad that I spent a bit more and got the EX. Sec sys, and climate control are sure nice. Drove it home on I-10, 340 miles, and got 23 mpg. Not bad considering it is brand new, and I was going 80 the whole way! I thank others for mentioning TX deals. I saved a bunch. I will be glad to give more info if anyone wants to email me.

I am working hard to get a good deal on an '04 Odyssey EX cloth, but the best I can find in Alabama so far is $27,100, plus tax and title, or $27,900 out the door. Does anyone know where there might be a better deal in Tennessee, Georgia or Mississippi? I might even fly to Texas to pick one up if it was a real deal. Any suggestions? Also, why are so few navy blue vans sold? I think they look great but they're hard to find. It seems everyone wants one in beige or silver. I don't get it. Thanks a lot for any ideas on a deal. Tom

for 25,500 from www.vandergriffhonda.com. Don't know if it is good deal or not. Is it worth 1k more for 2004? Do you think I can get better price at the end of year?
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
Navy is almost as hard to keep looking clean as black, and there's a lot of sheetmetal on a minivan to keep clean.

You may want to think about a blast email.

If you reside in the Bay Area, take a look at Winter Honda at Pittsburg, Calif.
    No sales pressure on customers
at all. Just bought an 2004 EX (sage brush pearl) from
them today. The sales person I dealt with was
excellent. They tried to sell us the extended
warranty but never pushed. The vehicle we got
has absolutely no dealer add-on to it.
    ------------
    2004 EX(cloth) : $25,148
    Calif Tax: 8.5%
    Document: $45
    Calif License: $208
    Calif Tire Fee: $5

and that is all we have to pay.
    ----------------
(PS: This 2004 EX, made in Alabama, appears
identical to the 2003 model. No
"hot" buttons, no new metering cluster, same
    noise level, and with the
same single piece "no-split" magic rear seat.
Need to wait for 2005 if you want improvement.)

Had a couple of queries already re: what I paid for my 2003 Odyssey EX I picked up a couple of days ago. Here's the breakdown:

    vehicle- 24,663
    inventory tax- 62
    doc fee- 50

    total- 24,775

Now I unfortuneately have to go to to AZ motor vehicle and pay tax (7.6%) + registration (aprox 400.00).

Again, my experience with El Paso Honda in El Paso TX was super. The deal was almost entirely done by email and phone. There were no tricks or nasty surprises, and they did not even mention, much less push any extended warranty. They only asked that I spread the word as they have a few more 2003s to liquidate.

The dealers here in the Orlando area are not too keen on discounting very close to Invoice Price and are in many cases evasive when asked about firm prices. The best I've gotten thus far is $800.00 over invoice on a 2003 EX Odyssey with cloth interior. That is not a sure thing, as this particular dealer ahs no 2003 EX's on his lot. Please recommend a good dealership to try - I want to get closer to Invoice price and particularly do not want to have to deal with the ones that I've had contact with so far. I'm tired of the games - I'm ready to buy now, but at a nice price! Thx!!! RR

This is for message #4635, We called Winter Honda saturday, they refused to offer the price you posted, but only offered us at 25800. We were cheated of low price over the phone by local dealers couple time and this dealer is hours away from our place, so we asked for a fax quote, and vin #, they refused to do so, we ended up not go.
  • 2004ex2004ex Member Posts: 3
Winter Honda appears to have reasonable pricing (e.g. low "AD" car
price for Ody (03 EX-cloth $24,788-24,988)) among local dealers (check out SF Chronicle for the last 6 months). They told us that was because they
had a low overhead cost (owner already owned the lot property.)
We had initially negotiated an "03" EX with them
with the quoted price in the posted message. When we arrived there later (we live far away from the dealership), an 04 was presented instead because
all the 03 were gone apparently, but they
said that they would keep their words for the negotiated price. It may be for some reason they can swing a special on the vehicle
we got that day. Anyway, we thought only a good and honest dealership would do this (keeping their words).
We did enjoy the easy going and no pressure
environment there, in contrast to a previous
purchase, where we had to deal with ~5
different persons inside a small cubical before the deal was done.
Sorry for the missing details in the original
    posting and potentially misleading implications.

[PS: I have checked www.carsdirect.com prices afterwards and
interesting enough, 04 EX ($26,554) is listed as cheaper then 03 EX ($26,860).]

to be more specific, has anyone bought from a state with no tax like oregon and drove the van to their home state like california?

do you still have to pay the taxes? a couple thousand saved on taxes is worth it to me.
  • cguacgua Member Posts: 7
Umm...do you really think, if one could avoid sales/use taxes in that manner, that *anyone* would buy their autos in-state?

You can buy your car in any state you desire (subject to emissions rules, of course, but most cars these days are "50-state" certified). At some point, however, you are going to need to register that car in a state in which you maintain domicile. This is the event at which state and local sales/use taxes will be collected.

AFAIK, sales/use tax rates are always based upon the locus of registration. Thus, it did not matter that I purchased my Ody in Chicago, I still had to pay the NYS and NYC sales/use taxes, at a combined rate of 8.625%. When my mom purchased her Acura RSX in NJ this past weekend (after I negotiated a killer deal, natch), the dealership arranged for NYS registration, and collected the 8.75% combined sales/use tax attributable to Nassau County, NY, where she resides.

The above is the reason why I get so annoyed when people insist on discussing "drive-out" price on these forums. Please don't include sales/use taxes in your car's price - I probably don't live where you live, so such information is useless and misleading.

[Ad valorem taxes are a completely different matter, and as they only apply to a few states (e.g., Virginia), I am omitting them from this discussion.]

Ive gotten 3 price quotes from various dealers in the North Jersey area for an 2004 Odyssey EX-L with DVD. Lowest price I have received is $32,165 (including destination, tax, DMV). I see other prices from this board that seem lower from other states. Anyone else in the North Jersey area getting the same quotes? Is it just the area that I am in that makes the price seem higher or am I being taken here? Thanks for your help!
  • rbell2rbell2 Member Posts: 180
To get the best help comparing prices on this board, please state the price minus all state fees (tax, tag, etc.). Just give us the vehicle cost plus any dealer fees. In Memphis, TN, you can easily get $2,500 off the sticker price of an '04 Ody EXL-RES. Good luck.

Bought a 2004 EX Cloth today for $25000 flat, no extra charges added. I simply called all six dealers in the state and spoke directly with the sales managers. I played them against each other until they wouldn't go any lower. Got a good deal and didn't spend all day at the dealership!

    How much others paid?

Started looking at new vans in May. Wife prefered 04 Sienna at the beginning but it is just too expensive in comparison to Odyssey. Missed the good deals for 2003 ($500 under invoice) in July because I was too busy and had no time to read this forum. I tried for 03 EXL but the best price I can get is a little bit under invoice ($26,000) since labor day weekend. Then I started focusing on 04 model and my targeted price is $500 over invoice, finally I was offered at such price and jumped in for the deal. I'm happy with the purcahse even I may possibly negotiate the price lower but I really need a van and I can start focusing on something else. Both salesperson and financeperson are easy to work with after I was offered the price through the phone, no VIN etching like Goodson Honda insisted, no surprise, no trick and no push for accessory etc.

I'm considering HondaCare extended warranty (7yr/75k with 0 deductible). Found on odyclub.com and was quoted for $685.
Is it worth it? I plan to keep it for a long time.

I'm looking for a deal on an EX-L. The lowest price one dealer offered was 26,900. From reading these posts I am confident I can do better, particularly as the 2004's arrive and Honda starts feeling the heat from the competing Sienna.

Two related questions for which I'd appreciate input: how low should I offer and how long is what I see as a "window of opportunity" likely to last? My gut tells me that under $26k is possible. As to timing, I live in N. Virginia and hurricane Isabel kept dealers from moving anything this past weekend and, judging from emailed promotions and radio ads, has made them nervous. The next ten days might see prices go low while there still is enough 2003 inventory.
  • rbell2rbell2 Member Posts: 180
Invoice for an '03 EX-L is $26,011 (including destination charges). I personally feel a price between invoice and $26,500 + tax/tag/title is a good deal for a solid, well equipped minivan. Many parts of the U.S. still seem to be selling them for well above that.

FYI... Chicago internet buyers beware, for the full story, see Prices Paid #1469 under the Honda Pilot topic, but here's the gist: Negotiated price w/ Ed Napleton Honda of Oak Lawn, Il for 03 Honda Pilot, but they didn't have any instock so had to order it. After waiting 3 times as long for it to come in as they said it would, and having to pay to rent van for vacation since Pilot didn't arrive timely, it finally came in. Drove 350 miles to Chicago from my home, rented car to get there, stayed in hotel overnight, went to pick up car next day and dealership raised price of Pilot on Bill of Sale by around $800. Salesman didn't bother to tell me of price change, thank goodness I am an alert buyer. When I called them on it, they said they could no longer sell to me at agreed upon price - it was "supply and deman", and "market conditions had changed" while I was waiting ON THEM for the Pilot to come in! I asked for my down pmt back, they gave it right back.
Was it bait & switch? Didn't think I'd read the fine print? Didn't think I'd blow the deal after driving all the way there? Had another buyer waiting? Probably. But I wasn't going to reinforce their dishonest sales tactics. I could have bought off the lot from another dealer at the time, but instead have wasted money and time on this dishonest dealership. They had several opportunities to inform me of the price change BEFORE I drove to Chicago!
Anyway, I do not recommend Ed Napleton Honda of Oak Lawn, Il. Go where others have been treated well, dealer reputation is important - I learned the hard way! BETTER LUCK TO EVERYONE ELSE!

Wow you mean if I told the lady at the DMV that I don't want to pay taxes on my car she will say no. As noted above, you pay the taxes of where you hang your hat. Whether it is 0% or 3.25 or 6.0 or 8.5, your Governor needs the money to pay for the mansion he is staying at.

Pricing : Guys when you ask the board for advice on pricing only state the price of the actual car. No other fees please since they are different from state to state. If someone from NYC is asking someone from Oklahoma about a price which included tax, the guy in Ok would say no since he only pays 3.25%. So the only thing that matters is the ACTUAL price of the car, NOT the out the door price, unless you want to break it down for us. In that case, we just skip over those details anyway.

North NJ Pricing - I purchased my 2003 EXL-RES from Yonkers Honda. You can email me and I will give you my entire speech on who screwed me and who talked my ear out.

Negotiating via internet with two local dealerships got me the price I wanted. The closest dealer (Landmark in N.VA) told me my offer of $25,800 "wasn't reasonable" and that, besides, they were now out of 2003's. Pohanka (MD) responded by offering $26,500 including destination charge. I told Pohanka that I would do it for $26,400, basically for the vain reason that then I could tell myself that I got the car for under $26k ($26,400 - 460 = $25,940). They accepted, and I'm going to pick up this afternoon. Pohanka also has a $102 processing charge, at Landmark it was $200. I feel I got a fair deal on the car I wanted. It's starting to get cold around here, looking forward to the seat warmers!
  • lapvnlapvn Member Posts: 455
Sorry to hear about your bad luck. We made such a SHORT trip as yours and was told to pay MSRP, I refused just like you to bow down to their tactics. Though they wanted me to stay, I told them the only paper I am signing is the one with the correct numbers. Walked out, gave my business elsewhere. Tough lost for them because my deal ended becoming a 5 car deal. Now look who is laughing and who lost out on a ton of commission.

You made the right choice by walking out. Yes expensive lesson but in the long run with you spreading the word of caution on them, it will cost them more.
  • lapvnlapvn Member Posts: 455
There is no better feeling than getting the car you want at a price that you can sleep peacefully at night for.

Ya, I got to use the seat warmers on some of those cold April evenings this year, so I too am looking forward to that. I am getting lazy on the leather conditioner though.
  • aspesisteveaspesisteve Member Posts: 833
if you drive off in one state you will have to pay taxes there and then assume any difference in your home state. If you have the car delivered (piggy back) you only have to register once - same cost, just less paper work.

As a ULEV (Ultra Low) this car is equipted the same in every state as far as emmisions go.

Sorry about your dreadful experience. I guess we all get hosed at some time or another. All you can do is chalk it off as a learning experience. Some of these guys must have ice running in their veins! I am not sure of exactly how you negotiated your internet deal, but in case it makes a difference to others here's how I did mine on my 2003 ex from El Paso Honda in TX. I had them fax the actual purchase agreement to me in Tucson. I signed it and faxed it back and gave them a 500.00 deposit. When I actually went to the dealer, I signed the exact same form again, there were no alterations or tricks. Thought I should share this experience, as there actually are some car dealers out there who stick to their word!
  • lapvnlapvn Member Posts: 455
I did slightly a different way than you, only because I had had it with all the games that the honda salesman were playing.

    First some background:
One guy I tried to MAKE him put it on paper, all he can say is we can worry about the paper works once I come in. I said I was not coming in until I get my fax the way we had agreed on. HHmmmmm how quickly he back pedaled and say, he could not offer me anything.

Second: I mass emailed for the third or 4th time. This time using a NASTY email, very front and forward.

Ok here is how the negotiations went down. First the usual price and if the the Ody was in stock. Once that was agreed on, I told them, fax me the order sheet, with the pricing, with the salesmans signature AND an authorize sales manager or owner that approve the sale. The order form MUST have the pricing and no other hidden agendas, PLUS the VIN#. This was Monday morning. Receive the fax around 12, and my brother and I drove up after work to put in our credit card deposit of $500. We also refused to get off work early so we got there at 8:30 - 9, just to put some pressure on the guys and see if they were serious.

After all our request was met, why wouldn't they come through. That night after signing the deposit, they showed us the board where the VIN#'s are to show that our vehicles were in transit. One week later we had our car.

If they play hardball so can you. If they try to stick it to you, walk out. Give your business to someone more deserving. Someone who comes through each of our test deserves our business.
  • cguacgua Member Posts: 7
I have negotiated the purchase and lease of quite a few vehicles via electronic media (phone/fax/web) in the past decade or so. I have found that the key to getting the dealership to stick to its end of the deal is ...

to GET IT IN A WRITING SIGNED BY THE SALES MANAGER.

This should be in the form of a sales order, with the name and address of the dealership preprinted on the form, with all terms correctly written or typed into the corresponding blanks, especially the VIN, sales price, and all dealer-imposed fees.

The VIN is crucial. If you don't have the VIN, you don't have a deal. Period.

Once the sales order is correct, sign it and fax it back. Insist that the sales manager countersign the order and fax it back to you. Now you have a binding agreement, one that most dealerships (reputable or otherwise) will not try to extricate themselves from.
  • buzzlightyear1buzzlightyear1 Member Posts: 8
I first negotiated via internet with dealers in Houston and Dallas to get their best price. I got 3 price quotes from various dealers for an 2004 Odyssey EX-Cloth. Lowest price I have received is $24,774 (Dealer Invoice) + $500 profit + 6.25% Sales Tax and approx. $225 for inventory tax, license, road and bridge tax, doc fees etc - Final Total 27,078.

Then I went to a couple of local dealers yesterday who have a several of 2004 models sitting on their lots. Classic Honda has about 10, First Texas Honda has roughly 7, and Howdy Honda has more than the other two dealers. They first started with MSRP less $1000. One of them is now ready to match the price, but I want to wait for another 2 weeks and here is the reason why:

Here is something I found out from a friend who works at the dealership. Honda gives their dealers 30 days for payment, hence dealers will try to get most over invoice for first 30 days. After the 30 days, they start feeling the pain and will get aggressive. Since the 2004 just came out couple of weeks ago, give it a couple of weeks more and you will see more competitive pricing on Odysseys. Also, dealers get incentives from Honda if they hit certain sales goals which are not transparent to the customers and are not reflected on the invoice either. That is incremental profit that dealers make on these Odysseys.

If you are a buyer in Austin or TX, you should be able to get Invoice based pricing. Just keep negotiating or start talking to other dealers over the internet. Classic and Howdy will play hardball, but so can you. If they try to stick it to you, walk out. Give your business to someone more deserving. Also, theie bargaining ability is coming down since Toyota Sienna is ramping up its production. Once the first 30 days are over, the Honda dealers will start feeling the heat!

I live in Seattle and I am looking to buy a EX-L. The 2003 Invoice is $26011 and the Edmunds TMV is $27512 which is $1500 over invoice. The 2004 Edmunds TMV is actually over MSRP at $29020. (I don't understand that) One dealer offered to sell me the 2004 EX-L for $1500 over invoice. I thought that this was a respectable deal until coming to this board. Now I want to pay invoice!! or $500 over invoice if I am feeling generous.

    Two questions:

    1) What price over invoice should I accept on this vehicle?

    2) In order to get the best deal, what should be my initial offer to the dealer (i.e. my starting point)?

The one article I read said " you better be prepared with an offer that is as low as possible -- but still in the ballpark."

So I am trying to get the benefit of other's experience to figure out the lowest offer that is in the ballpark.

    Thanks for your help!

Warner, I live in Maryland and am trying to get a good price on the 03 EX-L. I spoke to someone at Coleman Honda today and the best they could do was $28,900 and that didn't include destination or anything else. In addition, they add all other "dealer" options added such as pinstipes, wheel locks, mud guards, etc. I want the deal you got. Thanks in advance. AD
