I learned something this week. Bought my Odyssey in Texas. I bought the warranty from a Honda dealer in South Carolina. Why didn't I buy the warranty from a local dealer? Out of the 4 local dealers, the least expensive was still about $500 more than what I got from a dealer in SC. And this wasn't comparing different warranties - it was for the same thing. I'm wondering if this is the same for all other brands. I would assume it is.

Can you please tell me which SC dealer sold you the extended warranty for Odyssy ? Also appreciate if you tell us for how much you bought and for how long/how many miles ? Thanks in advance.

Dealers supposedly make more money on used car sales than they do on new ones. Since condition can vary so much, there's no invoice price the consumer can rely on as a baseline, and there's a lot of room to differ as to whether a used car is in fair or excellent condition.

We have a link on the main edmunds.com page you may want to look at for listing the van for sale:

I bought an EX-L-RES at invoice today, but the dealer did a strange thing just after we settled on price and before I paid - he switched to another car (same model and options) - the reason he gave was that he wanted to give me a good battery (the one I test drove had a dead battery that they had to jump before the test drive) and lower miles (the switched car had 19 miles Vs. 47 on the one I test drove). I couldn't tell any difference so I ended up buying the new one. The new car seems great so far, but I'm worried.

Can anyone tell me what the dealer's motivation could really have been?
  • vgadevgade Member Posts: 7
May be he did the right thing. Last weekend I went to check out a Nissan - Quest. The new car could not be started for test drive. SO he had to jump start. If nothing else is suspicious probably you are OK.

How long it will take for the dealer to get your car registered and send you the license plates ? What is your take home price on the odyssy [with sales tax ] ? Can you give a break down ?. It will help lot of others.

Dealer cost on a Honda Care warranty 7/75/0 is $635. Was able to purcahse at $715.

You may want to ask in Any Questions for a Car Dealer?. It does seem a bit odd to sell you a different van from the one you drove, but it's probably nothing nefarious.

After spending nearly two weeks going back and forth between dealers and quotes I finally bought a EX-L w/ Navi today.

One dealer quoted me invoice price, but has yet to have one in stock to sell me. I called them again this morning, just in case, and they actually suggested another dealership. I asked if I would get the same price and they replied "you might even get it lower". So, I called the other dealer, who just a few days ago did not have one in stock. They just got one off the delivery truck this morning.

I made an appointment to see the internet sales manager, saw the van but was unable to drive it because it had not been setup by the shop yet, and signed the papers. They got me a better financing rate than I had setup myself and even sold it under invoice!

They will be delivering it to me in the morning.

    This is what I paid:

    EX-L w/ navi $27,748.00
    doc fee $ $45.00

Plus CA tax (8.25%) and license = 2522.92

I have spent most of yesterday and today negotiating over the phone with several Honda dealers in the Central Indiana area. The lowest I can get a Honda Odyssey EX-L is $26500 which includes the $490 destination fee. What am I doing wrong. No one, NO ONE will go under invoice!!! Any suggestions? I thought waiting until the end of the year, end of the month would bring some great deals, apparently not! I am not offering any trade in but would like to take advantage of the 3.99% 60 month financing. Any suggestions? Thanks! Happy New Year!

I ran into the same problem here in the Lehigh Valley. The dealership would not come off of MSRP with the special financing offered by Honda. It could be your area. If you don't have many Honda dealerships in the area then the dealership will feel they have no competition.

BTW, the $26,500 is not a bad price for an EX-L.

Just got an internet quote from a dealership in Oxnard for 26,800 plus additional TTL fees. This is for a Ody EX-L and RES. Has anyone else gotten a better deal in the LA and Ventura county area?

I bought my warranty from Dick Brooks Honda.

After a day of phone negotiations with multiple dealers, the best I could do was invoice of $25,632, plus $490 delivery fee and $139 for mud guards, total NOT INCLUDING 6% tax and document fee is $26,261. I have not finalized the deal yet and I am wondering if the dealer will hold to his pricing or if he will hit me with some exorbitant document fee. I did find in negotiating with various dealers that the document fee was negotiable as well. I am also finding that the 3.9% financing is negotiable for those with excellent credit which we have. I also spent the day, Wednesday, negotiating for a similarly equipped Nissan Quest. That was tougher to determine because so much of the equipment is optional. The Honda Odyssey is pretty straight forward. I did find one dealer here in Indianapolis, Ed Martin Honda Nissan which sells both. The sales manager told me that he would NEVER sell an Odyssey at invoice but would sell me any Quest on his lot for invoice. People still seem to prefer the Odyssey. As always, any suggestions, tips, opinions are welcome. Happy New Year!

I have a question for musmard: was your deal a lease or a straight purchase, and was there a trade involved. I been right around 500 over invoice for a straight purchase with no trade, and wonder why, with so many on the lots here in Memphis, why they won't come down closer to invoice.

Jcuth, your deal at 26261 with mudguards for the EX-L is basically invoice price and I would jump on that in a second. Again, is it a straight purchase, trade, or lease? Remember, everything is negotiable, except for tax, title and license. Everything else goes above the bottom line that you will pay, regardless of what the dealer calls it. If they "have" to charge a $299 doc fee, say fine, and lower your "price" by $299. Please let us know the details on the purchase.

ajnbaxter: $26,800 for the EX-L is only 678 above invoice, which in CA would be a pretty competitive price. Again, are you doing a straight purchase, lease, and is there any trade involved. Without that type of info its hard to say what the actual price is.

I'd offer 300 over invoice for a straight purchase deal. That is what I'm trying to get in my area. No deal yet, but I'm willing to wait.
  • jcuthjcuth Member Posts: 7
I am responding to your question. The $26,261 is a straight deal. No trade-in, no lease. I would like to take advantage of Honda's 3.99% 60 month financing and I am sure the dealer gets a little of that. Others on this message board, one in VA I think have purchased an EX-L BELOW invoice. There is a 3% hold back on the Odyssey. I have not yet decided, so I am still cautious if the Honda dealer will hold to his offer or if he will try to add something on when I go in to sign the papers. I will keep you all posted. This is a GREAT way to find out the nitty gritty. Thank you all VERY much!!

Thanks for your input on the roofrack. I bookmarked the two Honda parts dealers. I'm still curious if you can get an LX with a "Convenience Package." This package is described in the Odyssey catalog as including the roofrack, CD, and remote entry.
  • robr2robr2 Member Posts: 8,805
It sounds like you have a great deal - I don't recall anyone getting a straight or below invoice deal. Please don't begrudge the dealer a little something by bringing up holdback. Remember that holdback is not profit. The dealer uses that money to finance his inventory and it disappears pretty quickly.

Some states regulate what the doc fees are, so know what the law is in Indiana. Rule of thumb is doc fees shouldn't be more than $50-$75. That said, you might want to check out the discussion about Doc Fees in the Smart Shopper message board.

Also, the other thing to note is any 'charges' that might come up when dealing with the Finance Manager. Be sure and read the following post in the Questions About Financing New Vehicles discussion. The post contains some links to articles that are extremely helpful.

I bought my Odyssey from Odonnell Honda in Ellicot City, Md. I went to their website, configured the Odyssey that I wanted and requested a quote. The quote was $25,332, no haggling necessary. I also requested quotes from Herson's Honda who came in $200 under invoice ($100 over Odonnell's price). BTW, my interest rate was 3.64% for 60 months, guess they have some wiggle room...

    Good luck!
  • musmadmusmad Member Posts: 4
I did a straight purchase. I did have my trade in appraise, but I opted to not accept the trade offer.(although they offered me almost $1K more than any other dealer had offered). My trade wasn't even discussed until after the initial purchase papers were filled out so it was not a factor in the purchase price.

I called the internet/fleet department, asked for the price and was told $150 under invoice. (he later told me that the internet/fleet department in almost any dealership will give you the best price and had I just walked in and asked for any sales person I would have had to start haggling from the sticker price).
I was very skeptical that they would honor this price when I arrived and just a day or two earlier they did not even have one to sell me. They called me back 10 minutes later and told me that they just had one arrived that morning. I wanted to go immediately to purchase it because I had waited 1 hour after talked to a dealer on the phone a week earlier and when I arrived they had been sold, but the salesman was booked with appointments until the afternoon. He assured me he would hold it for me and I made an afternoon appointment. When I got there the van had a huge sign in the window that said SOLD and had my name on it.

The whole process was very easy. They even beat my credit union financing rate by more than a point! The finance guy did try to sell me a few extras, but I just said no and he didn't push it.

Because it had just arrived that morning it was not ready to drive home. The next morning the salesman and drove it to my house and showed me how to use everything in it. It was great that I didn't need to bother a friend or family member for a ride back to the dealer.

I live in Oxnard. In late Sept, 03 the internet dealers in this area were selling at $1000 over invoice. I contacted every dealer in Ventura CO.
The EX-L RES with destination is, I believe $27,480. If you can get yours for this selling price and then add tax and license fees only, I think your getting a deal that you will be able to sleep well with. Just don't add on anything else like paint protection, low jack, or an extended warranty, or any other options. Have the dealer e-mail you a break down of the quote that includes the selling price and all other fees. Your quote should specify the total out the door price. To make sure that they don't change anything on you at the last minute, you can also have them include a VIN# so that you are sure that the vihicle you agree on is there, and that it's the one you are going to go pick up. I paid $28,300 in Woodland Hills not including Tax and Lic fees because at the time dealerships in Oxnard were not going to be able to get the 04 Odyssey EX-L RES in Sandstone for atleast another two weeks and I didn't want to wait. I did finance the paint protection, low jack, and 6yr 75,000 mile warranty that raised my payments by only $31.00 but when all was said and done I was now financing around $32,800 wich did rais my finance charge for my loan significantly. Follow my advice and you will surely see that you are getting a very good deal. Good Luck, please write back, I would like to hear how everything works out for you. Thanks in advance.

To be honest, I don't know the answer to your question: what is the availability and cost of the "convenience" pkg for the ODY LX.

Actually, at some dealerships, you might find someone has already added a roofrack, maybe even added mud flaps, and tossed in a cargo tray on the LXs on the lot.

Do the dealers in your area even have the LX? Finding it in the color / interior you want may be a challenge.

My suggestion to you was use the information from the web-site(s) to assist in determining the value to you (this is somewhat subjective) for the options and if you thought you might want to try installing them yourself, or having the dealer do it it you went with an Odyssey over another vechicle.

As I said, the roofrack looked like something I could do if I had time. I'm sure I could install the CD-player too. Trickier would be the remote keyless entry. The instructions are on the website I pointed you to.

As far as the latter, remember that on the LX, the sliding doors are manual. So, what does the keyless do for you on the LX, for one thing, it allows you to lock and unlock at a distance.

Convenient sure. Myself, I note it would be most convenient when I drive, and I get my little ones out of the car, and the last door I close is the slider on the passenger side. On the LX, you can (and I do) sometimes come around to the other side of the car, open the slider, then open the front passenger and then press "Lock" (as opposed to using the key), get the last one out, then close the slider. Then the car locks. I could of course use the key to lock the car once the kids are out. So yes, there is a convenience factor. That tango gets to be a hasstle.

You might want to ask your Insurance Agent, as there might be another cost benefit to having the keyless option (alarm function?).

Have you called or emailed a dealer asking if there are any in the "system" with some or all of those items on it? Or have you even asked for the pricing on the "convenience" pkg? I cannot remember if the Consumer Reports report provided numbers for that - that's why I said, I used the websites to determine values of the add-ons.

    Hope it helps.

The LX Conveniece package is $995. Includes roof rack, keyless remote and CD player. At tleast this is the porice I was told when shopping the Odyssey on Monday.
  • vgadevgade Member Posts: 7
Can any body answer this question ? My dealer said he got the shipment, but the new Odyssy has 103 miles on it. Is it acceptable ? are the miles high for a new car ?
  • cartagramcartagram Member Posts: 115
Edmunds doesn't allow you to specify the Convenience Package as an option. Is there another source for pricing an LX's MSRP and invoice with the Convenience Package included?
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
If you are referring to the keyless entry and cargo nets/covers, I think those are dealer installed options.

    Dealer prices will vary.

After weeks of test driving the Sienna, Quest and Odyssey, researching prices and options on the internet and negotiating with dealers, here is the best I could do. Because the Sienna and Quest are new models and the Honda is tried and tested, we went with the Honda. Plus it was cheaper than the rest when comparing apples with apples which was tough because the Sienna and Quest have so many option packages. So with tears of buyer's remorse in my eyes and our new Odyssey sitting in our driveway, here are the final damages.

    Honda Odyssey EX-L; $25,262
    Delivery $ 490
    Document fee $ 98
    Tire fee (Indiana) $ 1.25
    6% Indiana sls tax $ 1575.66

    Total $27934.66

Since we could get a variable home equity loan at 4% tied to the Prime rate, we decided to take the 3.9% financing for 60 months offered by Honda. We financed $22,000 and put the remaining $5935.91 on our credit card since we get money back and we have the money sitting in our credit union. So we will get back 2% of the $5935 or about $119. I'll take every last penny. The finance manager told us we could only put $4,000 on our credit card, the all of a sudden it was $4,500. After consulting with his boss, he said OK. We have great credit, I think a 732 on the scale they use.

We did not take the extended warranty, but the Platinum extended warranty was offered at $1275.

There was one odd thing that occured. When we went into talk with the finance manager he told us we would get a "better" deal by financing through Citibank instead of Honda. It would cost us $120 but we would get 3.71%. When he ran the numbers, it would have cost us about $6 per month to go with the supposed "better" deal. Be careful. We made our purchase at Penske Honda on 96th street in Indianapolis. They were patient and let us take a few test drives and allowed us to pick our color. If you have any questions or comments, please offer them!

We looked for a used 2003 Odyssey and searched as far as Cincinnati and Chicago, but all the used certified 2003's were MORE than what we could get a 2004, so we went new.

I hope I don't have to purchase another car for sometime, but I would appreciate hearing from any of you as to what I could have done differently. Thanks and safe driving!

jcuth, it seems you got under invoice price. I am shopping around indianapolis area too. Can you give me the contact of your sale person at Penske Honda. Thanks
  • jcuthjcuth Member Posts: 7
hzhang2, it appears as if the rules of Edmunds preclude the mention of specific names of salespeople. We just walked into the showroom cold and took two test drives. We just took the first salesperson that appeared. That said, I would suggest you first go to one of the many places here on Edmunds and ask for an internet quote. I wish I had started there and then followed up with the internet salesperson. We eventually wound up dealing directly with the sales manager who negotiated the final deal and came down to the final price. Since I was dealing over the phone, the Honda salesperson didn't like having to go back and forth with the manager asking for a lower bid. Hope that helps. Also, I called all the other Honda dealers back to see if they would do better and all eventually said, thanks but no thanks. I do know Penske has about 50 Odyssey's on their lot of varying trim levels. They seemed to have the most. Penske's document fee was the highest of everyone's at $98. A few dealers would waive that fee but their final price was higher. I do think the 3.9% financing runs out early next week. Best of luck!

This board has been extremely helpful over the past several months...thank you! I have a 2000 Odyssey with 85K miles. Basic reasearch showed trade-in at $13,400, but many I have talked to have been getting around $12,000 (ouch). I just negotiated a deal for a '04 EX-L-DVD and splash guards for just under $28,000. (not great I know). However, they are going to give me $13,700 for my trade-in, for a difference of $14,300...with TTL (Ohio at 7%) out the door for $15,600. Sound reasonable or should I tighten my sealbelt? Any quick responses would be greatly appreciated. THANKS!

    Here's my tale......

I financed $13,800 at 4.29% for 60 mo., borrowed $5000 from a relative until my '94 Accord sold (and I could pay them back), was given $5000 by another relative as an inheritance, and threw in the few hundred dollar difference. My deal was $24,100 out the door on a Sage '04 LX.

The interest on the loan came to $1331 which, even though its a decent rate, bothers me. I've always disliked paying any kind of interest. So, I did a balance transfer to my credit card of $6300 at 0% for 12 mo. The remaining balance of $5307 (already made one payment) will cost me $254 in interest and I'll have the title in 26 months instead of 60. Of course, I'll be trying to pay this thing off as soon as possible, but I'll probably have to do another balance transfer at the end of the year. It's a bit risky, but to me it's worth it knowing I'll likely save $1100.

Just picked up a 2004 EX-L in Redrock Pearl for 25,400 - including the destination fee. Gladly paid another 150 in doc fees and some other small fees. Of course had to pay Mass state tax but can't avoid that. Got 3.49% for 60 months from my bank. Other dealers were between 26,490 and 25,800. Don't know if was only year end why the deals are so good or becasue December was a pretty bad weather month in the Boston area.

hzhang2, remember in negotiating, you almost ALWAYS reject the first number thrown out. Of course they are going try to get you higher, that is why the have salespeople. Remember, you want THEM to start the numbers game. That is why it is easy to start with an internet quote from the myriad of internet sites that provide quotes. You will have to do what I did, get on the phone to the other local dealers and tell them you are a serious buyer and what is their best price. You might have to ask them a few times in the same conversation because they want YOU to toss out the first number which they would then reject. Make them give you a number. I always tell the salesperson that they are sitting with ALL the information. THEY have the numbers, they have the car, THEY do this for a full time living!! THEY know what they can sell the car for, not YOU! Therefore, if you are a serious buyer, then call all the dealers in the area. You can go on Honda's website and get all the dealers in Indiana if you want. CALL THEM! I am cheap beyond belief, I wish I wasn't. I wish I was infinitely wealthy and could just pay MSRP. You have to decide what is important to you. Do you want to spend a Saturday haggling over the phone with 10 different salespeople and their sales managers? It is up to you.

I just bought a Odyssey a few days after Christmas. All of my dealings were done with emails and confirmed over the phone before I went to buy. We contacted the four major dealers in Northern Virginia and bought at Koons of Manasas (Sandstone, EX with Leather).

    Price including delivery 26241
    Processing fee 199
    VA Tax, tags 907

    Total, $27,347

Added extended warrantee, bumper to bumper, zero deductible for up to 7 yrs or 100,000 miles. ($1295.00+ tax).

We looked at the Sienna and were ready to buy but after reading many of the comments on the discussion boards, we were swayed to the Honda because the 04 Sienna was the first model with it’s new design (which could have some issues). The Odyssey is so nice and clean,, I hate to have the kids in it.

re: tcasboy--Its a straight up purchase. No trade in or lease. One added question though is how did you get the $678 above invoice number. I thought that invoice price was 26,980 (w/o destination charge)for the EX-L with RES? Quote was $26,880.

re: buddyzuniga--I went to a dealer in Simi Valley, and they would not go below invoice at all. $500 over invoice (27,470 +500)is as low as they would go. I'm emailing the manager the quote.

Even if the 26,880 does not include the destination charge of 490, the quote sounds very good. However there are some extenuating circumstances surrounding the Simi Valley quote and I was hoping they would do right by me. More to come if they don't come through.

Also you might want to contact the internet manager at Keyes, of Woodland Hills Honda. He didn't hesitate to meet a quote that I gave him from Venura Honda. Just remember not to let them sell you any extras that you did'nt plan on purchasing. The service clerk named Derkis is a very easy going guy, if you have any after purchase issues he'll help you in whatever way he can. That has been my experience. Please keep me informed, good luck!
