Owner profile reads 2001 Dodge Ram 350. Did you trade rare and valuable Deep Velvet Blue Pearl Odyssey for large Ram 350 or get 2nd vehicle Ram 350 to pull large trailer?
Taffeta White best Odyssey color so far.
  • ody01ody01 Member Posts: 100
More space passengers and luggage, much better gas mileage, lower cost, safer driving (except rare collision with larger vehicle).
  • whambamwhambam Member Posts: 37
No, I cyber-acquired the Ram 350 to match up with the user name Whambam. Besides, I was jealous of TAD's big honkin' Ford pickemup truck.

My real wheels are those rolling beneath a 99 DVBP Ody EX.

Was worried anyone trade nice Odyssey for gas guzzling Ram 350 (or Ford 350, GM 3500, Ford Excursion, etc.)

Want to put a trailer hitch on my 2002 Ody to haul bikes only. Which brand fits the best without any drilling? Thanks.

If that link of Whambam's looks broken, hit the refresh to get it to load. It's acting ornery for me.

Anyone know where I can order a nice license plate frame that says Odyssey?I hate advertising for the dealer(one of my pet peeves).

    Appreciate any info,

I can take a minute to say that life is good. Wife doing much better. Children growing cuter and more ornery (when do the terrible "twos" end, anyway?!? :-().

Not dissin' the Odyssey (except maybe, for putridicity of that new green -- which could be worse if they added even just a bit more yellow pigment, I guess). But this is Texas after all, and a YukonXL is almost the minimum required equipment around these parts....

Whambam, No need for jealousy wrt honkin' big red pickemup truck. It's dirty at the moment (and for the majority of moments, in fact), so the lustrous, jewel-like glow of its Toreador Red and real imitation gold leaf two-tone trim is somewhat dimmed. Drop me an e-mail when you get a chance. I do slightly better at keeping up with those than I have (or will) in posting herein....

can anyone offer help on when 03 will be in stores. i need to get one by end of september . also, is it better to get 03 or 02 leftover for either lease or buy

I'm close to purchasing a 2002 Oddy EX and will have the optional tow package installed. Really don't like it that the transmission can't be locked out of overdrive unless one shifts to D3. My current Ford F150 and Jeep GC permit OD lockout and when towing it is very convenient to use. I've towed a boat etc for more than 50,000 miles with vehicles that have a tow package, so am experienced in that area.

    I tow a 2000 # boat/trailer etc.

Has anyone towed long distances in "D" permittng the transmission to hunt the correct gear. Or, do you prefer to tow in D3 and put up with the 3000 to 3500 RPM. However, I would assume (correctly??) that unless it was into a headwind that I could tow in "D" on level ground at 65 mph without it downshifting.

I'm going to hate moving the shift lever from "D" to "D3" when in my current vehicles I just punch a button to lock out OD

Spent some time at the Vans towing board and came here hoping to get updated information from others experience.

    Thanks

    Bob

Why change? Go out and buy another new your other vehicle. The 02 is also a 5 speed transmission so going to D3 will not put out the high RPM's. If I remember correctly on my 02 the RPM's go to around 2500 in D3 at around 60mph

Hope all is well with you. Good to see you back.
I am still driving my highly prized, much sought by collectors of rare autos, no longer produced, and envied by all, Cayon Stone Silver metallic, 99 Odyssey. I have over 60K miles on it and it still drives like new.
  • liebesiliebesi Member Posts: 33
With the increased production up and running for the 2004 models it should be a lot easier to get one in about a year and a half, unfortunately anyone waiting for the 03's will have to put up with the same troubles we had getting the 02's.

I've been hearing about the easing of demand and prices since I bought my van in '99. It's amazing that it's 3 years later and people are still paying MSRP+.

Can someone tell me where the spare tire is located on the Odyssey? I've checked the brochure and Honda website and can't find any info. Has anyone taken one out yet? I suspect, with the 3rd Row Magic Seat it must be located in the middle somewhere. Thanks

  • tcoultharttcoulthart Member Posts: 17
It is located between the front and middle seats, accessed from the inside.
  • robr2robr2 Member Posts: 8,805
Spare tire in located in a well between the first and second rows. Not that easy to get to put once you move the front seats forward, it's not too bad.
  • dchoppdchopp Member Posts: 256
Its in the Owners manual along with the location of the jack and the points used to jack up the vehicle.

Ok...coming back to the board after a long absence. It's time to replace the Affinities that came on my 99 Ody (we've got about 42K on them). What's the latest and greatest advice?
  • ody01ody01 Member Posts: 100
Replace tires same brand, type, size Honda chose. Honda put Michelin on EX, Firestone on cheaper LX.
Honda engineer smarter than tire salesman, shade tree mechanic, Town Hall reader.

"Replace tires same brand, type, size Honda chose. Honda put Michelin on EX, Firestone on cheaper LX.

LMAO... Sorry I have to say "one of the dumbest post I ever read". How about those FORD Exploded Firestone tires put on by Ford Engineers? Are those Ford Engineer smarter than Town Hall reader too?

Car manufacturers DO NOT always select the BEST tires for their car. They select average tires to put on their car based on $$$$. If they put the best of everything on the CAR it will be too expensive for people to buy. Also there is no BEST tire for each car, depends on what you are looking for your car. Performance vs Ride Comfort vs Road Noise vs Tire Wear vs Traction Control, Wet vs Dry, Summer vs Winter.... on and on and on.

    Rogerberkowitz:

Michelin makes some other better tires than Honda's Ody EX OEM Symmetry tire. Followings are different Michelin tires on Michelin website: I only listed a few more popular ones and OEM Symmetry tire to show "so Called BEST tire compares with other Michelin"

X-One vs X-Radial vs Rainforce MX4 ws Symmetry

    X-One Overall is 10, 80K miles warranty
    High Performance -- 5
    Everyday Handling-- 10
    Wet Traction ---- 10
    Winter Traction --- 8
    Maximum Tread Life - 10
    Quiet Ride ---------10

X-Radial Overall is 9, 80K miles warranty (only sold @ BJ, Costco and SAM's club)
    High Performance -- 4
    Everyday Handling-- 8
    Wet Traction ---- 9
    Winter Traction --- 7
    Maximum Tread Life - 10
    Quiet Ride -------- 7

Rainforce MX4 Overall is 8, 65k miles warranty
    High Performance -- 4
    Everyday Handling-- 8
    Wet Traction ---- 9
    Winter Traction --- 7
    Maximum Tread Life - 8
    Quiet Ride -------- 6

Symmetry Overall is 8, 65K miles warranty
    High Performance -- 4
    Everyday Handling-- 7
    Wet Traction ---- 6
    Winter Traction --- 6
    Maximum Tread Life - 7
    Quiet Ride -------- 8

Also Bridgestone Turanza LS-T is a good tire. Bridgestone RE950 and Dunlop SP Sport A2 are good tires H-rated but they don't come with 65 series, then you have to either go with 225/60-16 or 235/60-16. Honda puts 225/60-16 on 2002 Ody, but tire rev per min 235/60-16 is much closer to 215/65-16 than 225/60-16. Regardless which tire you choose odometer reading is less than 1 % off.

Go to tirerack and check out the tires survey, warranty, PRICE... to see which one to put on your Ody.

    Good Luck!

I always heard that the X Radial Plus was the X One rebranded, but have also heard that it uses a "lesser" tire compound. I'm happy with mine, but you have me curious again. Did you get this info from Tire Rack? Thanks!

    Steve:

I didn't get it from Tirerack, Tirerack doesn't sell X-Radial so I have to go to Michelin website. Once you get to Michelin website, then go to Car and Truck Tires, then Tire Catalog then Click on Minivan it has 8 of them listed for minivan.

Of course mine are 2 years old and say X Radial Plus, instead of just X Radial, so I can pretend that they have Durablack and the other good stuff in them :-)

Replaced the Firestone on our 2000 LX last month @ 23,000 miles. About 10k more miles left but I was tired of fighting the every 2000 mile balance issues. The dealer was balancing them FREE but the trouble of going & picking up the car just wasn't worth it anymore. BTW, service advisor said Honda Ody is sensitive to "good tires, wheels, and suspension". Implied that the Firestone were not that good?

Went with the Michelin X-One. They ride and handle great, but are expensive...about $105 each out the door. Over the years, I have had alot of Michelin tires and have always been satisfied. I know there are other good choices, but we are keeping the van "forever" so I don't mind maybe a few extra $ now in exchange for the 80,000 mile treadwear guarantee and the Michelin quality.
  • pat84pat84 Member Posts: 817
My original Firestone Affinity tires went 48K. The 99 EX was furnished with them. I replaced them with the Michelin Symmetry. The snow traction rating at Tirerack has changed significantly since I bought them. The Symmetry was rated over the X- one on snow traction they are both at marginal now. . I put X-one's on a DC that I once owned and I thought they road hard.

Has anyone had any problems with the Honda Odyssey as far as it's ground clearance. It seems to be so low to the ground, I live in south florida and we get very heavy rains, and it is quite common to have to drive thru a 6 to 10 inch puddle of water. Has anyone driven their Odyssey thru a deep puddle of water? Any water made it inside the cabin?
  • bamahondabamahonda Member Posts: 8
I just recently bought a set of x-radial plus tires from Sams. The labels on the tires said they contained Durablack. Maybe that is the difference between plain x-radial and x-radial plus. They appear to have the exact same tread pattern as the x-one.
  • ody01ody01 Member Posts: 100
Never read tire problem any Honda.
Honda Odyssey still have waiting list, Ford Windstar sales dropping.
Some people buy other minivan when deposit needed. All other minivan on lot with discount.

Didn't you read the Michelin tires comparism list from Michelin? By the way, just in case you didn't know according to Michelin's score list 10 is the highest score. 10 is better than 9 than 8 than 7 than....
Do you still think Honda Engineer is soo smart (smarter even than edmunds reader) that Michelin Symmetry Tires they (Honda Engineer) put on the Ody EX is the best tire?
Maybe I am not as smart as you are. Wait, I think I know who is the edmund reader you mentioned in your earlier post. I think Honda engineer is smarter than only one edmund's reader not to mention name here. LOL!

    Have a good day.

Ody1, there is a term for the tires which the automotive engineers put on the cars. They are referred to as rim protectors. They are the tires that have been determined to be

    1: Adequate

    2: Cheap

    3: Cheap
  • bostongardenbostongarden Member Posts: 25
Auto manufacturers do make tradeoffs in the tires they select as stock for a make and model. In many cases, the tires may be no more than adequate. I'm not sure that this is terrible. Nevertheless, as far as stock tires being cheap, it depends. The stock tires that came with my '93 LS400 were terrific.

The Symmetry is a pretty good tire and it offers a reasonable value. Personally, I may not reload with it when replacing my rubber. After 14,000 miles, however, I have been satisfied with the performance of the Symmetry tires on my '01 EX

If one likes to rely heavily on tirerack survey results, these data suggest that the Goodyear Aquatred 3, and the Goodyear Regatta 2 offer a terrific value. One trouble I have with tirerack's survey results is that the opinions are provided by drivers of all makes and models. At the extreme, none of the survey opinions may be based on a driving experience with a Honda Odyssey. Note that the survey results reflect opinions about a particular tire, not opinions about a particular tire as it performed on a Honda Odyssey.

I love Michelins. I always used Michelin on my '87 Acura Integra, and on my '89 Mazda 929. On my Lexus, however, I like the Dunlop SP 5000. For the Ody, I'd probably go with Michelin; but, I'm not sure which model I would select. If you took any of the advice listed here, it sounds like you'd get a fine tire in any event.

    Good luck Roger

  • ody01ody01 Member Posts: 100
    bostongarden best tire post.
People should not drive cheap car fast, reckless. Cheap tire good as cheap car.
I post Michelin tires standard Odyssey EX, Firestone tires on cheaper LX. Should say "less expensive Odyssey LX". LX not cheap car.
Honda engineer smarter put Michelin tires on All Odyssey model. Losest price Accord LX have Michelin tires.
  • bjk2001bjk2001 Member Posts: 358
    Ody01:

Let's see. Michelin makes good tires. But Michelin "Symmetry Tire" which your smart Honda engineer chose to put on Odyssey EX is not the best Michelin minivan tire. Michelin makes a few other minivan tires which are better than Symmetry. Also other tire manufactures make good tires, some are better than Michelin Symmetry, too. When it's time to replace tire there are a lot more choices out there. And that's a fact almost all the Town Hall readers knew except one, YOU.

I only had one bone to pick with you when you said "Honda Engineer is smarter than tires sales, auto mechanic and Edmunds Town Hall Reader". Maybe Honda Engineer IS SMARTER THAN YOU ARE (granted you are also Edmund Town Hall Reader), please don't insult other Edmund Town Hall Readers' intelligence

just indoctrinated our new Odyssey with it's first road trip to the mountains - it now has over 1k miles. Our gas milege has been somewhat dissapointing up to this point. I know everyone will tell me driving conditions affect driving...duh, but how long does it take to break in a car for it to get the milege that came on the sticker?

We got 19 MPG hwy with a medium size load. We went up in elevation but then benefited from going down the hill also.
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
My van mileage kept improving little by little even past the 10,000 mark. My guess is that you'll probably notice a big difference at least by 3 or 4 thousand miles.

What did you get right? I have my 01 EX for almost 15,000 miles now I am getting ~18 MPG mixed driving conditions freeway & local. If you read your window sticker gas mileage is a very wide range. IMHO I don't think you will ever get the higher sticker mileage.

Our experience has been 14-16 mpg in city driving and 26-27 mpg in highway driving. It has been pretty much like this from the get go, though we did not take it on the highway much until after the break-in period. Alas, most of our driving is in the city :-(.

Do you have to purchase the warranty when you take delivery of a new Odyssey or is their a certain time period in which you can purchase the warranty.

    Thanks

    bob;

Here is some Honda Extended Warranty Pricing I found on ody club board.

    7/100,000/0 $865
    6/100,000/0 $735
    5/100,000/0 $635
    7/75,000/0 $645
    6/75,000/0 $605
    5/75,000/0 $545
    5/60,000/0 $459
    4/60,000/0 $399

You could wait till 2 years/24,000 miles for purchase it, after 2 years/24,000 miles you have to pay a "surcharge" like ~60 bucks.

    bostongarden:

Well thats about what I get ~16 MPG when I drive in the city stop and go short distance. I assume you live in Boston, I have been there a few times I don't think you will get too much better. Keep in mind your Ody has 3.5 L engine and 4000 lbs. My daughter's 02 Civic 4 Dr EX 1.7 L only gets ~22-23 MPG in the city.
BTW, Is there still a Boston Garden ? I thought it's Fleet Center now?

    ragards,

    bjk
  • bostongardenbostongarden Member Posts: 25
We drive mostly in, and just outside of, Boston. I'm happy when I get 16 mpg. Fourteen mpg disappoints me a bit only because of the expectations set by the sticker, though, I understand that these values are based on estimates under somewhat unrealistic conditions. (Steve, I believe this officially makes this post on topic :-)

The Boston Garden is no longer standing. The Celtics and Bruins now play in the Fleet Center. I miss the Gahden (no typo, smile), however, I don't have to worry about obstructed view seating at the Fleet. I have mixed emotions about Fenway Park. I enjoy being there. Nevertheless, I could get accustomed to features such as no obstructed view seating, a bit more seat and leg room, and a wider concourse at the top of the grandstand section.

I typically prefer the user name "celtics" when I subscribe to boards or services. This name was already taken when I registered at Edmunds, so I selected the name bostongarden feeling it captured much of the same spirit.

  • dchoppdchopp Member Posts: 256
I got 26.2 mpg. on my last trip to Cleveland, Ohio. Thats not bad for a vehicle that weighs 4400lbs with a 240hp engine with the climate control on doing 69 mph. The best I get on my SUV is 20mpg for the same trip. It weighs 4200lbs with a 190hp engine and I go 65 mph.
  • bdaddybdaddy Member Posts: 171
You don't have to get an extended warranty right away as BJK writes. Honda has the ability to change the warranty prices at year end so there may be an advantage to buying one before year end. If it were me, I'd wait the 2 years to see if the van has problems and then decide if I wanted to drop the cash.
