the seatbelt hardware on your B pillar? That's the case with my GLS. Second person=fastened seatbelt.

The rattles are from the door panels. Not from the seat belt hw since I always lock the seat belt even if there is no one sitting on the passenger seat. Hate to hear that noise.

The car is good overall. I hate the service guys. They stained my interior while changing the sunroof motor. There is very little engine noise at 70 mph, but once I touch 80 I can hear the engine very well. Is it the same with others too?

    Regards.

sr_srikanth - The exhaust opens up a flap or something at some exact RPM (don't recall what it is, 4 something) and at that point the car gets louder.

    Hello, Urbanzephyr --
When they quote you at invoice, that's not including advertising fees, right?
I called one dealer, who disputed my edmunds invoice numbers. He tacked on about $500 for "advertising fees," gave me a song and dance about his financing fees, and wanted $500 above that.
Of course, he didn't have the options I wanted anyway.
Just wondering if this is typical. Thanks--this is a really helpful board.
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
Adding an "advertising fee" seems to be common practice for Hyundai dealers in many markets (fortunately not in the Twin Cities). I haven't heard of one as high as $500 before, more common is around $300. Doesn't look like this dealer wants your business that badly. Of course, if all the dealers in your area tack on these fees, there isn't much you can do--except buy another make of car. You may also find that when you demonstrate to the salesperson (better yet, the sales manager) that you are very serious about buying a car TODAY if the price is right, the fees can magically vanish or at least go down.
  • urbanzephyrurbanzephyr Member Posts: 29
I've not seen the advertising fee at any of the massachusset's dealers. I did see one dealer that had added a 2 thousand dollar warranty to every sticker, but I ignored it and it didn't come up in my phone discussions with them. The dealer's first offer isn't going to be his best offer. I got invoice offers on 2001 with automatic and moonroof from dealers that had 4-6 in inventory and who seemed to be comfortable with quoting me a price via email or over the phone. I figure such dealers understand I'm not locked into buying from them and are feeling a little nervous about their inventory at the moment. The advertising fee, like the doc fee, is a pain - if the dealers in a region can agree to price fixing these things then your kind of stuck.

Meanwhile - has anybody actually seen ones that are labeled as 2002? Anybody seen the new leather color? Anybody know how to pick the year out of the VIN.
  • scottsabascottsaba Member Posts: 5
Well, Finally got the right number for our GT and brought the rascal home. Pewter, 5 Speed, Moon roof, mats, ABS and TCS for 14.5 plus TTL - 15.6 out the door ( Sticker was 16,942 with all the add on crap that we refuse to pay for).
VIN - check the tenth number it will tell you the year of the car. Last few digits tell you the production number- ours is 39,698 - I think - one of the last of the 2001 models. Could have had a red 2002 with the same features for the same money but the Pewter really looks elegant and the red had a little too much orange tint for our taste. This car is replacing a 99 Civic LX, there is no comparison in features. If this car is as reliable as we expect it is the best deal out there, Honda better take notice and beware, the Koreans may have found the right combination here. Saw several with the add on Spoiler $695!!! but they were a fine match. So far very pleased with the car, smoooth acceleration and Taut handling.
Looked in vain for a cheap website for Accessories, one will pop up soon. By the way drove to Austin, Tx to get mine, 225 miles and worth every penney. Can forward the name of the dealer by Email if you are interested in a GT at a reasonable price. :)

I have been lurking on this board while waiting for my GT with 5-speed and package 6.
I've had the car a few days now and love it. Traded-in my 94 CivicSi for it and am not looking
back. I've noticed that my car handles very flat around corners. The question is...how do
you know if you have the comfort or sport suspension? By VIN number perhaps? Tnx ahead.

Bought my 2002 GT, 5spd, ABS, mud guards, floor mats and wind deflector for invoice at Jeff Wyler, Springfield, OH. $14935 total, including delivery ($495) and advertising fee ($405). MSRP was $15,869 including delivery but not advertising fee, which appears only on the dealer's invoice. Before you buy the car, ask the dealer for a copy of the invoice. All the dealers I've dealt with, in Ohio and Massachusetts, have been willing to show me the invoice.
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
The window sticker will indicate "Comfort Suspension" if the GT has the GLS-style, non-sport suspension.

It could be quite useful if we could chat. My 2002 Elantra GT is my 6th Hyundai... never yet had an unhappy experience, but he real story is the first one that was bought used with 60K miles on it. It was theone the terrible reputaion... the 87 Excel. It was purchased for my teenage daughter in 1990. Daughter is now 30 and with two kids. The car got passed on to her younger brother who is now 26 and two kids. Both of them now are still driving Hyundai's. Daughter just got a 2001 Elantra. Tho only thing I ever had to do with the original 87 Excel was tires, brakes, and a carbureter kit. Car finally retired at 135,000 miles due to kid's stupid mistake. All makes have a few "bad ones", and those people get very loud, I have never found one of those people... and I keep asking Hyundai owners when I find them. All makes keep mechincs in business, else there would be no mechanics. You can contact me at clackey@rnc3.com

    Hi,

I bought my Blue GT auto with pkg 6 (Moonroof) for 300$ above invoice, from Healey Hyundai. They have one dealership in Mt.kisco and the salesman is Tony Finelli. Nice to deal with. Be careful with the manager, he was rude when I presented all the TMV from Edmunds.

I bought mine from the same dealership in Beacon because it is closer to home. Hope this helps.

in Microsoft Carpoint, the Elantra scored 8.8 out of ten, considerably higher than the Civic or Corolla, both of which were in the 8.2 range. In 5K+ trouble free miles, this has been the best car I've ever had.
  • mpgmanmpgman Member Posts: 723
11,000 miles on a pewter automatic with the ABS/Traction Control/Roof package. Only problem has been a fuel gauge that won't read full when the tank was filled. Has the comfort suspension and still rides firm and tight. Nothing out there can beat the content for the price or the warranty. Reliability long term is the only unknown at this point, but at the rate I am driving, I will be able to address this not too long from now!

well i finally saw a gt in real life. i was driving down main street at like 9 PM and saw ONE at the hyundai dealership, it was a 2001, dark cranberry color, auto. it had 3200 miles on it, so i am guessing it was a demo or something it was so pretty, i brought a friend and she was like "it looks so much better than the regular elantras, it looks more elegant", with like the leather, and chrome trim, and alloys :) hehe, she said it looked like a SAAB and she loved saab's... i fell in love, i didn't want to leave the dealership...... why can't february come sooner

Can anyone suggest some services that will get price quotes from multiple dealers? I tried Autobytel, but it only returned one dealer quote.
    Thanks.

Attention all you young people out there, with your low budget dreams, let me put a real perspective on all this. When you understand "where I come from", you might wonder why I am so impressed with my "cheap" 2002 GT. I have several grand kids and am soon to retire. I am from the REAL supercar era of the 455 GTO's, SS Chevells and similar cars. I really understand brute performance. I raced NHRA (National Hot Rod Assn) for years and was three times national champion in my class, not to mention national records set several times. http://www.rnc3.com/misc/img_carl/buick.jpg I used to be ASE certified mechanic and I know cars. My wife traded her Trans Am on a brand new Camaro! Guess what car she drives most <grin>. Yep, Elantra GT. This red GT is the most fun car I have had since the 70's. Quality is more than adequate, it's good! (and we have had several Hyundais before this one. If the 'bad' ones were truly bad, I would not have bought another one). clackey3@bellsouth.net

I am a college student and recently sold my 1991 Toyota 4runner. While it was a GREAT truck, the gas milage and eventually aging was getting very old. I am definately getting an Elantra GT in December. Luckly, one of my dad's best friends owns Key Hyundai in Jacksonville, so I can get it under invoice and know I will get great service. The only problem I have with the car is the back carpet. I was looking at one in Greenville, SC where I go to school (Furman Univeristy), and the carpet looks as if it was just laid in the back and not installed. Has anyone else seen this, and waht did you do to make it more presentable.

I don't know about their prices. The owner is giving me a special price so i'm not sure. I know they are very legit, and I know people who have bought Audi's from them, and they were very happy.
  • clackeyclackey Member Posts: 3
    Adam,
Here in Raleigh, NC, the paint protector is half that price. Having had a white Oldsmobile with it , I can say it is a tough product but more of a nuisance than useful, especially if you have a white or light colored car. It's just a way of boosting the sticker. Dealer Addons are seldom (if ever put on the car before it is sold. There are several good business reasons why it needs to be that way. Just tell them you don't want that product. Also, remember that dealer addons NEVER increase the tradein value of a car! It is money thrown away forever. If they dig in their heels on it, just say you will wait for one to come in that doesn't have it. They can get on the computer and find one on the ships coming over from Korea and put "dibs" on it. The service costs around $100 or so. I don't know the exact price. You might have to wait 2 or three weeks, etc. Also, many banks offer a service similar to "auto by tel". Let them find your car. You will save money. They do it to get your auto loan. -Carl-

    Hey all,

I'm having trouble finding an '02 without a moonroof in the Houston area. I've called every dealership. I'd be willing to travel some if anyone has any suggestions.

Also, anyone hear any rumors about rebates or incentives on the GT in the near future? I'd buy an '01 if I could get someone to discount it a bit.

You ought to try Gillman in Austin, Daniel Wolfenstein is the Internet Mgr and I would guess that he would be able to help you. He sure helped me out. By the way, this is a VERY fun car to drive, beats my 99 Civic hands down. You can tell him that I am more impressed with this car every time I get behind the wheel and like CLackey I am one of those old dogs that is VERY particular about what I like to drive.

Now for my question.... the car comes standard with the 10/ 100k warranty. Can the bumper to bumper portion be extended by Hyundai for the full 10 years? How long can we go before we could buy it? I notice in the standard warranty that some items are not covered for the full term of 5/60 and I like the idea of belts and suspenders to obtain the best coverage possible if it does not cost a zillion from the manufacturer. I am not interested in any warranty other than the manufacturers. For example the Hondacare can be had for the Ody at $875 which takes the bumper to bumper out to 7/100K. Since I drive about 8500 mi per year I suspect I will get the full use of the 10 years.
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
Back when I bought my '01 GLS almost a year ago, the bumper-to-bumper warranty could be extended to 10/100,000 for around $700. I expect dealers will set their own prices, so you should be prepared to negotiate and shop around. The nice thing about the extended warranty is that it is fully transferrable for 10 years/100,000 miles. I also recall that you could extend the warranty through Hyundai up to one year from purchase. Check with your dealer to verify.

Just returned from a 500-mile weekend round trip from Montclair, NJ to Chatham, MA. As usual the Elantra GT performed admirably, handling the grueling traffic along I-95 with aplomb. I averaged 32.9 mpg. We were easily able to pack a weekend's worth of luggage, blankets, camera equipment, outerwear and two cases of beer in the GT's cargo area.

Just turned over 9,000 miles and no problems to report. One little nit to pick, however: the left-side drivers seat track sometimes balks at locking into position. I have to "slam" the seat into place sometimes. I'll take this up with the dealer when I bring the car in for its belated 7,500-mile scheduled maintenance (anybody else skip this appointment?).

We love the car more each day. The GT has proven itself as both a commuter car and a highway cruiser.

PS - I finally saw another GT "in action" yesterday. Followed a cobalt blue model bearing Massachusetts plates along I-195 into Fall River, MA. Friendly horn honkings and waves were exchanged.

9,000 miles? I'd better crack the whip and get rolling again! Right around 12,000 now. Love the car. Have to get the fuel gauge looked at again though...won't read full right after a fill-up but it edges up to full after 40-50 miles. Strange, since I am not overfilling the tank. Just a minor annoyance since the trip computer appears to be dead accurate.

Here is my problem... On Oct 19, I went to my local dealer and made a deal to purchase a GT with 5 speed and all the options. Agreed on a price, agreed on a price on my trade in and came up with an amount which was to be paid (in cash) when my GT arrived at the dealership... This afternoon, they call me and say that they can't get my car with the options I want untill the end of November. Because of this, they want to redo the deal when the car arrives!!! They stated market conditions may change and they would have to reassess my trade in. I signed papers with all the information on it with all the original figures.... What are my options? Can dealerships actually do this?? Do the original papers I signed have no value??? Any suggestions would be great. Thanks….

I've never had a moonroof here in South Texas and really didn't want one. Now our dealer is offering us a GT at a price hard to pass up.Are they as hot in the summer as I imagine? Can anyone give me some advice?

Also, there's a demo with 5000 miles but the dealer doesn't want to discount it any further than the other 01's. That seems out of line to me. Any thoughts?

  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
First, the original papers you signed do have value. I am not a lawyer and certainly not an expert in Canadian law, but here in the U.S. a signed contract is binding on both parties. Read it carefully, however. Is it really a contract or just some papers with numbers on them? Does it say anything about reassessing your trade-in when you actually deliver it to the dealer? I wouldn't be surprised if it did say that, since that is a reasonable condition (who knows what might happen to your trade-in in the meantime?). If it contains no such clause, that's too bad for the dealer, since you have what is called a "contract of adhesion", meaning the dealer wrote it and therefore it's tough luck for them if it doesn't include some condition that they want in there now. But again, that's U.S. contract law, I don't know about Canadian law. So if you do have a signed contract and the dealer wants to change the terms, you can threaten to go to court to make them uphold it, work out something with them, or find another dealer. Since the dealer does not want to uphold the original contract, they should be willing to let you walk from it if you choose to. You may want to get some legal advice on this.

The moonroof has a sunshade. Also you would probably come to appreciate it on those nice days you get from October through May.

The moonroof doesn't make the car any hotter, as long as you keep the sunshade closed. With the shade closed, it acts just like any non-moonroof equipped car. My mom lived with a moonroof in hot and humid south Florida for 184,000 miles and loved it enough to make sure her next car had one as well. She never had a problem with wind or water leaks either.

As for the demo, I would not pay as much for it as the ones with less mileage. They have to discount it some for the wear and tear.

Wow! Researching cars before buying really pays off. Thank you Edmund's Town Hall members. If not for this discussion board I would be driving a Ford Focus (yikes!!) Got the loaded GT Pewter automatic EOM June and 6264 miles later I have had only one problem and only three rants. The seat release button for the back passenger seat crapped out on me the day I pulled into my driveway. Got it fixed and its A OK now. The rants: 1. the plastic hook used to keep the driver side floor mat in place keeps popping out of its housing. An annoying little habit but I guess I can live with it since I doubt if its really fixable. 2. Dash lights are really cool but forget about cruise control indicator. You've really gotta strain your eyes to determine if its on or not. 3. An eminent knee surgery said forget the manual get the auto. How I wish I hadn't listened. Great speed once she gets going but doesn't have the power I like. All in all though, I really love this car. Great looks, great handling, and excellent on fuel economy.

Nornal dicount on a demo is $0.10 per mile.
  • moparbadmoparbad Member Posts: 3,870
$0.10/mile is only fair to dealer. Discount must be at least $0.20 per mile and should be $0.25/mile to even consider buying a demo. Consider that the first 50,000 miles are the most expensive and valuble miles that you will ever put on a car. These are the miles that the car is new, under warranty, and depriciating rapidly.
I sure would like to drive a new car for $0.10/mile.

Just bought a 2002 GT auto, Cobalt Blue, moonroof, ABS, alarm...all the trimmings. Got it for $200 over invoice, which the dealer happily provided a copy of. This was the best dealer experience I've had as of yet. Liberty Hyundai, Libertyville, IL. I traded in my 98 Grand Am, which was holding up about as well as a paper umbrella. While I traded down in power ...I'm so happy with this car so far, I don't even miss the ol V6. I drive about 60 miles a day just in the work commute alone, and I'm in awe of the gas mileage :) Minor gripe...wish the vanity mirrors were lighted, and wish the seat adjustment dials were easier to maneuver. Itty bitty gripes for now, hope it stays that way! Just got really cold in Chicago this week, anxious to see how this thing handles on the tollway in the Chicago winter. Can't be much worse than my Grand Am....ETS, yeah right.

This car fits me. We tried the Mazda 5, but it seemed smaller. I'm 6'1" 250lbs, and the kids are also big. This small car is big. I felt very comfortable in the car after adjusting the multi-adjustable drivers seat. The kids have lots of room in the back. The sunroof didn't fit me though. :( The other imports were out of our $ range. There is very good value in this car. We settled on the black 5 speed. It's a blast to drive, and quite a head turner. It has 3000 km on it now. A few annoying things though... the gas gauge won't read full, when filled. From a previous post, I'll leave power on when filling to see if this solves the problem. The seat belt buckles rattle, so now if it's just me in the car, I buckle up the passenger side. Just recently a new rattle was heard from the front passenger side. I can't locate it, but I wonder if the cause is from the sound system. My teenage son is using the car for a listening room. The sound system is awesome and very loud. Suppose the bass is loosening the screws/clips in the door panels? No other complaints, so far.

2 weeks and 550 miles later I'm still a happy camper. I have made a few changes. Headlights: While the headlights are the best I've seen I always install PIAA Xtreme white bulbs in my cars. After installing PIAA Xtreme white H7 bulbs in the low beam I found that LESS light was actually hitting the ground. Since this was not my intention I reinstalled the stock 55W bulbs and have been happy ever since. This low light condition was caused by the H7 bulb having a small envelope and Xtreme white having a dark coating. Rattle: I had a rattle in the overhead console that I have seen a few people mention here. My rattle turned out to be the overhead dome light switch. The handle (or knob) was loose causing said rattle. I cut two small pieces of cardboard the size of the ends of the handle and installed double sided tape on one side of both pieces. I then installed the two pieces with double sided tape facing the knob between the overhead dome light knob and the console. That rattle is gone. Engine: Seems to be loosening up with the miles. Acceleration is fine with the 5-speed and compares favorably with my old 94 CivicSi. Though the car is so quiet you can be fooled at first.I have decided to go with Mobil 1 oil and filter when the time comes. The dealer can keep their free oil changes. Brakes: My car is non-abs and I find the brakes are very good. Tires: Seems these MXV4 tires get a bad rap. While I did have the wheel shimmy in the beginning it seems to be getting less and less with miles. They have plenty of grip in the corners (no squealing) and are very secure in the wet. They also are a very quiet cruising tire. I was going to change them but now I'm not so sure. I will wait for the white stuff to fall before final decision. Future mods: K&N makes a free flow air filter for the Elantra sedan that should fit the airbox in the GT. I'm always lookin' for a few more horses:) The tranny does balk only going into reverse. For this I will replace the manual tranny fluid with Redline MTL synthetic. This stuff has improved every manual tranny I've used it in. Gossip: I heard from a fellow worker that the GT was sold in Europe first. When the american dealers asked Hyundai to bring it to the states Hyundai said they would have to "soften it up first" i.e. make the suspension mushy, etc. The dealers said "bring it as is or not at all". Thank god they left it alone, this car handles very well.

Hello everyone. After spending several months comparison shopping, I decided I wanted a 5-speed GT with virtually no options--just mud guards and carpet mats. The hard part is getting someone in the New York area to sell me what I want! I got a great price quote from Suresky Motors in Goshen, New York--$13,400.00--but am unable to actually close the deal because the guy never calls me back. I actually went to the dealership and no one there was able to actually process the order or commit to locating the car at that price. Based on sr_srikanth's experience, I also tried Healey Brothers, but it's another case of never getting to close the deal. I would appreciate any suggestions. These dealers are so lackadaisical that I am considering alternative makes.

Having recently driven a GT 5sp, I have a few observations:

    The Good:
    1. Excellent build quality
    2. Very good brakes
    3. Nice firm ride
    4. Good handling
    5. Smooth shifter
    6. Nice seats and interior
    7. Decent power

    The Bad:
    1. Engine vibration approaching 5k rpm
    2. Shifter smooth but throws too long
    3. 5sp gear ratios too wide
    4. Clutch heavier than competing models
    5. Steering somewhat numb.

For the price this car is still a homerun. But the car did not feel that sporty to me, except for the firm ride. The steering and gear spacing are anything but GT. But when you look at the competition, this is still a tough car to beat for its price

I just read most of the posts here and I am going cross-eyed. The GT sounds like a great car BUT I am shopping for my mother, and the safety issue still resounds over and above all the pluses.

As much as I like the GT and think it is a great buy next to the Corolla, I could not recommend it knowing that tests show flaws that could result in serious injury. Although she may never experience even the slightest fender-bender with her next vehicle, the thought that she could be seriously injured by a vehicle that I recommended just does not sit well with me.

Has Hyundai addressed, in any way, the safety issues identified in the offset crash tests?

dplatnyc: If you're able to cross the Hudson River, try Bob Ciasulli Hyundai on Route 46 in Little Falls, NJ. My wife and I bought a plain-Jane GT with auto tranny from that dealer in June and we had no problems. At that time locating a "stripped" model (if you could call it that) was difficult, too, as most GTs we inquired about had the moonroof/ABS package that we did not desire. You could also try another large Hyundai dealer - DiFeo in Jersey City.

I think Ciasulli may have been one of the first northern NJ dealers to get the GT in stock. DiFeo called me back with their quote two weeks *after* I bought from Ciasulli.

Good luck with your purchase. We have 9,400 trouble-free miles on our GT already and we love it more each day.

On the subject of the safety and crash test scores, you may want to scroll back a bit to see what's already been discussed here. Here a good place (post 538) to start. Good luck with your decision. ;-)

Thanks, but as I said, I read all the posts including the 538, but have yet to read that Hyundai has done anything to solve the issues revealed by the offset crash tests (ie. air-bag, seat latch). In fact, post 584 indicates that Hyundai Motor America had not issued a recall and had no plans to do so for the air bags. Its been over 3 months since the test results and I would have expected Hyundai to address the issues (ie. through recall or mods for 2002 mdy). My question is whether anyone knows if Hyundai has done anything to address these two issues with the 2002s.

Since my earlier e-mail, I have requested Hyundai Canada to respond to this very question. If I receive a response, I will post it here. In the meantime, if anyone has any other "good" news related to these issues, I would love to hear them.

    Thanks in advance.
