Check your manual. I believe that when the TCS light in on the system is off. Therefor the default is to have the system on whenever you start the car.

After reading about replacing the horns (on wmoses GT site) I did the same. I picked up a pair of new Fiamm hi/lo horns for $10 and with $2 of connectors I replaced the lame stock horn. It took all of 25 minutes to make the dual harness, remove the old and install the new. They sure are louder than that 'meep-meep' junk most new cars have.
Now when the lady doing her making-up, talking on the cell drifts into my lane (which happens way to much in NJ) I can make her spill the frapichino between her legs. :P

Glad to see that the website was helpful and that you are pleased with the horns. I too am planning to get the same highway blasters (132 dB) Fiamm horns (high and low tones) for my GT.

I had a chuckle at certain people doing things other than driving and hearing the blast of the horn. Here in Houston, they also pilot these huge SUV's (I can't see why they _need_ it other than for show) while putting on makeup, having breakfast and talking on the phone. Makes me sick.

I've been considering replacing my horn too, after a few meager "beeps" with this one. I may just ask about a Sonata horn, but glad to know they are easily and quickly replaced (a quick glance under the hood suggested it would be simple). Thanks guys!

Does anyone know when the 2003 Elantras are coming and are they still going to have a GT version? I'm interested in purchasing a GT, but I want to wait until the new model year so either I can get a good deal on a 2002, or get a new Elantra GT 2003 so that it won't depreciate too quickly.

I rarely remember to use my horn.... most of the time its just lots of high beaming and cursing with the window closed (sometimes open) and nasty looks and hand motions while passing whoever gets me pissed off...and i would not want a loud horn... it might startle the other guy and he might lose control and slam into me... now that would not be good....

If this fall is like the previous two, the '03 models should start showing up in Hyundai lots in September. It depends a little on where you live. If you live in San Diego, for example, you might see them a little earlier than if you live in North Dakota. I haven't seen any official word that Hyundai will for sure offer the GT in '03, but I can't imagine they would drop it after only a year and a half.

talking about horns ... i use to work with this old guy in SF and he was a train buff . well to make a long story short , he built a horn at home and hooked it up in his truck .. he ran it off a ac compressor.. he would get behind you and hit it and people would freak out looking for a damn train ..... he pulled up behind us one day in his truck , we were in the company truck , and hit the horn and my god you freak out .. you think you are about to get creamed by a train lol it is a howl the thing sounds just like a train horn . you wanna make alot of money make one of them to put under the hood of a compact car . i know i would sure drop a couple hundred bucks to get one just to see people freak .. but come to think of it i would get sued i bet for making someone crash ..

I've used the combo "high beaming, cursing and full horn blasts"!
Another use for loud horns is the ability to interrupt the offending driver's cell phone conversation at the next light. Yhea this usually provokes a 'road rage incident', but if you're really ticked off it will bring a smile to your face! Just sit there with the horn blasting away as they try to talk. You'll watch them squirm around as they try to hear the other person... hopefully they'll miss something important. The really smart ones will turn their stereo up ;)
Oh yhea.... always leave an escape route!

that there will be a GT sedan in 03. Also, there is a small chance that the Lavita will appear. This is the only credible reference to "an Elantra wagon" that is sometimes mentioned, since no other Elantra wagon exists.

Does anyone know if there will be any significant changes to the 2003 GT? I'm planning on buying a 2002 gt, but I'm wondering if I should just wait for the 2003.
• th003gth003g Member Posts: 149
doubt it.... unlike the lincoln blackwood... the elantra GT is selling well and will not be changed or in the case of the lincoln... discontinued...after less than 1 year of production.... I am proud to say I have seen a blackwood and a escalade ext in person... ext is a much more attractive car but it still is pointless to have a 60g luxury pickup... dont ya think. funny thing... both were driven by soccer mom types who had trouble getting into the truck... prob executive wives who've never actually used teh trucks for anything more than shopping for groceries... sickening....

Just got my latest state inspection. 24,000 miles and all is well.

The traction control and ABS engaged on an icy winter day. Worked like a charm.

A/C is the coldest I've ever experienced and real quick to blow cold.

Just wish the car had a warning buzzer for leaving the lights and emergency brake on.

The guy who inspected my car said he was amazed at how far Hyundai had come and how much car you get for the dollar.

... of happy Elantra GT owners. I drove my very own 2002 package 11 off the lot Tuesday afternoon, and I am already falling in love with the car. What a sweetheart!!

When I began considering buying a new car about four months ago, I never faintly considered purchasing a Hyundai. Fortunately, I stumbled across this forum and became interested in this car. I did some research on this car and the competition, but after I test drove Elantra and saw how clean it was, I was bitten.

A few pages back, someone wrote in about buying an Elantra over the MP5. Well, I looked at MP5s too, and in my opinion there is no comparison between that "thing" and my beautiful 9-3 look-a-like.

There is no room for cognitive dissonance with buying the Elantra GT. Believe!

I also want to thank the forum members here that helped me "get off the fence" by responding to my concerns and questions about Elantra.

Thanks again... I look forward to posting more in this forum in the future!

thanks for the info. I think I'll wait until the 2003's come out before buying a GT. Unless of course the 2002's have a great sale.

This has been an excellent forum for information I have been reading it regularly. I recently bought an Elantra GT (bright red) 5spd no ABS sunroof etc and love it. The first few times that I filled it up, I had no problems whatsoever. HOWEVER, I now noticed that the fuel gauge seems to read about an eighth of a tank lower than full when the car is full. Once the car reaches that level of fuel it seems to read accurately, although sometimes the fuel gauge will actually rise to full after driving a little bit. Obviously the trip computer will also read inaccurately, I noticed that msg numbers 728 and 729 had the same problem, but they do not explain what the exact cause is. Any answers?
Also, to anyone looking to buy the Elantra GT in Canada, or elsewhere, I very much recommend it.

I replaced my horns w/ the Fiamme Blasters last year. Much nicer sounding. I would humbly suggest that you consider running a new fused line from the battery to a relay to run your horns. Will cost you <$10. The circuit you're using is not designed to handle that much current. The 2 Fiammes draw too much amperage--although the fuses are "slow-blow" they can allow for more damage to be done to the insulation and contacts. Whatever you do, don't replace a blown fuse with a higher capacity one. Just thought I'd add my 2 cents.
• mpgmanmpgman Member Posts: 723
You most likely need a new relay. I had the same problem, and the second relay they installed fixed it. They must have gotten a bad batch because others have had similar experiences. It's more of an annoyance though. I always rely on the trip computer which I find to be very accurate. Bring the car to the dealer with the tank as empty as possible. They will have to drop it. Tell them it happens with the engine off during fill-up. Tell them it happens whether you use the auto pump shutoff or try to top off the tank. They should replace the unit.

Never waited to see if the lights shut off. I'll try it. Thanks.
• gtpetegtpete Member Posts: 5
My fuel guage reading inaccuratly is a relay? I'll have to take it to the dealer, my dealer had never heard of this problem (or so they say) I just didn't want to be without my car for longer than necessary. I'll tell them what I've learned.
Thanks for your help.
• joffficerjoffficer Member Posts: 169
Yhea... the horn kit I bought came with the relay, but I didn't install it (just being lazy). If I have a problem with it I'll install it, but for now it works great.
As far as 'my' fuel guage... I thought I had a problem with my first or second fill up, but now (4000 miles) I haven't noticed any problems. I think I may have read the guage wrong (no comment!)
• uz2bphastuz2bphast Member Posts: 12
I have noticed on several fill ups that the needle did not go to the full indicator. It sorted itself out after driving for a few minutes. As if it was calibrating itself to the amount of fuel.

At the same time the trip computer also re-adjusted itself .

It has not done this recently. I am about a month away from taking the car in for its first oil change. If it re-occurs i will notify the service manager.

Just searching my memory about topping the tank off...Doesn’t the Manual discourage that (It doesn’t say why, just says don’t top it off)...I have always been accustomed (as most Men probably are) to get in as much extra gas as possible and get an extra few miles on a tank of gas (or bragging rights). I know that I have never topped off the tank as when we closed the sale the salesman read went over the manual stressing the major things and that was one he mentioned. The reason I am bringing this up is because I have never topped off the tank, and gauge will always point right at the full mark...Could the cause of the gauge being off 1/8 be because of topping the tank off??? Just a thought...Again wife will never let me drive it anyways (unless she low on gas..and hints I should driver "her" car that day)...LOL
• jimbeaumijimbeaumi Member Posts: 620
No car should be topped off. Someone correct me on this, but I believe there is a sensor or vapor capture that gets flooded and damaged if you keep filling the tank.

I have had my GT for nearly four months and just had its second oil change. I am up to 8,000 miles and it is running great. The only flaw has been the fuel gauge. I asked the service guys to check it but apparently they did not and did not tell me if they did check it or not. Can anyone tell me if it is okay to go to another dealer rather than the one I bought my lovely GT from? The salesman that I had is on vacation for three weeks otherwise I would speak to him about the problem. It is great to have a place to come and chat with other owners of the GT. Look forward to your feedback.
• wmoseswmoses Member Posts: 212
I have always topped off to the nearest 50 cents where possible and never had a problem in any car or van that I have had.
I suspect that the caution has to do with fuel spillage more than vapour lock problems. I have not had any vapour lock problems either. Needle on my GT comes up past "F" as it always does and the car works just fine. Just make sure that the cap is properly tightened -- I use half turn in the "ratchet zone" (don't know what else to call it) -- and everything should be okay.

"Tom: Why do most manufacturers make their gauges like this? It's not that they can't make them more accurate. It's just that they don't want you to overfill the tank or run out of gas.

Ray: Overfilling the tank can ruin the charcoal canister that traps fuel vapors. It's part of the emissions system and is therefore the manufacturer's responsibility for the first 100,000 miles."

I am very interested in the Hyundai Elantra GT - I just can't seem to get anyone interested in selling one to me. There's only one dealership here, and three others about 100 miles away. I've visited or called all three - seems as soon as I state that I want the 5 speed manual transmission, the conversation ends. When I suggested that I could wait to have one ordered I was told that dealers don't order Hyundai's, they're allocated once they reach port. Any ideas?
• inuvikinuvik Member Posts: 163
I've been looking at dealer inventory here in Oregon and dealers here seem to have plenty of GT's with 5 speeds. No sales tax in Oregon, might be worth the trip!!
• kentavoskentavos Member Posts: 34
they sell cars online and might be able to give you what you want. good luck and keep us posted if it helps.
• dustbaildustbail Member Posts: 34
When I purchased my GT 2 months ago they had a dozen 5 speeds but the wife insisted on an Auto...I stopped by the dealership Saturday and they had 10 5 speeds and only 2 Autos...I don’t know where in AZ you are but you may want to check with Ken Garff in Salt Lake City...As far as the no tax thing, really cant bypass paying taxes on the car. With you being from another state before you can register your car in Arizona you will have to pay the sales tax...That would be the only way to register it and get a license for it. If you are willing to come up to Salt Lake City let me know...I will get you the names and phone numbers to the right people, that way you don’t have to haggle pricing.

Kentavos's suggestion to try Carsdirect is a good one. I can verify that they do a terrific job. I got my GT from them in April, and it was a very simple (read NOT Stressful!) transaction. I'd recommend it to anybody.

If dealerships in your area do not have any GTs, then it may take a little while for the Carsdirect rep to locate the GT you want (depending on what package/color you are seeking).

Give them a shot, if they cannot find a GT for you in a reasonable amount of time you can easily say "Thanks, but no thanks." My experience with them was EXTREMELY good -- a wholehearted recommendation.

Good Luck!

I am currently vacationing in Quebec (i.e La Malbaie) and keep seeing Elantras galore. Just today, at the grocery store, there were 3 (yes three) GTs in the parking lot. Mind you, this is a small community - less than 9,000 people. It makes me happy to see so many "smart" consumers being part of the growing trend.
Cheers!

Wow! Three in one parking lot! I live in Houston which has I believe over 4 million people and I have not seen 3 GTs in any given month, let alone on one day in one place!

Always knew that Quebecers knew their cars. Hyundais sell very well in Quebec. Must have something to do with the fact that there was a Sonata plant in Bromont at one time.

I saw one the other day..... the first I've seen in almost a month. That's in NJ, where there are 1100 people per square mile (really!).
It's nice having something that few others have. Every time my wife sees a SAAB she says "there's one", and I tell her "not unless we paid another 15-20 grand!"

\out here on LI around town i know of at least 7 different GT's that call my town home.... about 5 mile radius... I've seen many GT's at my workplace...

this may be off topic but Edmunds did a follow up on the new aztec redesign... and the author stated
"The Pontiac Aztek is suffering similar prejudice. A lot of people shy away from it because a vocal minority keep squawking about its looks"

vocal MINORITY...? I have yet to find any car amgazine that has given this car positive reviews on its looks and material quality... if it was a vocal minority then why would an unprecedented 1st year redesign be needed and undertaken by GM... LOW SALES.... which translates into people staying away from it for some reason...

i know of only 2 Azteks in town but the rendevous did much better I've noticed more than 8 of them around town... this even though the Buick is newer and has 1 less year of production so far....
• uz2bphastuz2bphast Member Posts: 12
I drove an Aztek for about 3 months when I was in Salt lake city last year.

As for practicality - it handled well, rode nicely and was not hard on gas. The back window was poorly designed and hard to see out of.

As for looks, I had people actually back up to look at it then tell me what they thought - nothing positive. The aztek while being very radical in design is just to weird.

As for the Buick it just looks nicer

all you proud owners should go check the sight out .all you people that are thinking of buying a car it is another good place to go see what the people are saying about the cars also . all you car buffs go and post your own reviews on any car or matter of fact anything under the sun it seems like . and they pay you for it . it ain't much but still lol . i have writen 2 reviews there under my other screen name ( Omardeth ) go check it out . write a review . maybe your good at it . all your car salesman might be able to write anuff reviews to even make some real money at it . they seem to pay for the amount of hits your review gets . the more reviews you write the more hits you get .
• mpgmanmpgman Member Posts: 723
This may also affect the fuel injection system. It is not an issue with carbureted cars, if you still have one. The check engine light on the GT may be sensitive to filling up when the engine is left running for example, or if you don't really tighten the fuel cap and put it on correctly. It is easy to get the lanyard trapped under the lip of the cap. I always get out of the car and tighten the cap myself. I recommend it to others to save yourself some grief. There should be no problem taking your fuel gauge problem to another dealer. Just tell them you intend to become a customer there because you heard good things about the service department.

I was watching TV this weekend (I don’t remember what it was just the points they brought up). They talked about how advertising directly affects reviews in Auto Magazines. The reasoning was why would a magazine down talk a car and then advertise it in the same magazine. They also talked about when Automakers have auto shows and big names Automakers such as: BMW, Mercedes, GM, Toyota, GM. Will flip the bill for writers from different magazines. Even one instance of BMW sending groups of writers to Spain to test-drive a re-designed model. They said it wasn’t all work either they did some site seeing, and a horse show and wined and dined. Them, although BMW doesn’t have to worry much about how there reviews do, it did help them to get a front page and an excellent review. Another that it brought to attention is the Ford Focus...I was interested because how all the magazines rant and rave how great the car is and always leaves out Hyundai. They talked about how great the reviews that magazines all gave but there was no mention of 3 recalls or the first safety tests. They did mention legit writers that the companies and newspapers they write for prevents them from accepting any "(my words here) bribes" or freebees.

So my thought.... maybe Hyundai isn’t bribing errr...(coughs) I mean paying the magazines enough for advertising, and they need to whine and dine the writers at car shows. And then again that will most likely increase the cost of the car...Ahhhh never mind I would rather drive an in-expensive car, that no one knows about, or refuses to buy because no magazine will not talk about it.
• kentavoskentavos Member Posts: 34
I too am always amazed at how writers brag about the ford focus. I once rented one and was amazed at how terrible it was. There was absolutely no room. My seat was so flush to the door, that my coat would get stuck between the too. It felt like I was driving a box car. And yet I keep hearing how it's the #1 selling car in the world? Maybe because it's cheap, but other wise, it sucked.
• th003gth003g Member Posts: 149
american focus is different than the rest of the world... in design and construction... ours are made in mexico... others arent
• jimbeaumijimbeaumi Member Posts: 620
Focus is not different in design and construction between markets. That is pure silliness. And only some models of American Focus are made in Mexico, and that does NOT make their design different.

Now, back to Elantra!

Has anyone purchased the roof rack for the GT from Hyundai? I may get it in order to add a bike rack. It can be seen at the HyundaiUSA web site in the parts and accessories section. Problem is the picture is cropped so you can only see the roof of the car, so I don't know what it would really look like. Any feedback or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
