"First off, what type of care and maintanence have owners been doing on the leather seats. I would like to keep them looking good for as long as possible and have heard that Lexol products are a good choice for that. Any comments?"

I have also heard good things about Lexol products, although any good brand two-step product (cleaner and conditioner) would be satisfactory. I think that the trick is to treat often -- especially the most used seats.

Regarding the pinstripe ... go back to the body shop of the dealer, and ask them to remove it. They likely put it on and they could remove any mark left by buffing it out.

How do you like the auto?
Is it peppy? Smoothe shifting.? Every review I read has avoided mentioning the Auto because they have the manual.

Auto's are easier to sell also.
  • pw_eastsidepw_eastside Member Posts: 15
clayman - So far the auto been, to me at least, very smooth shifting. You have to take into consideration that I'm coming from a chevy cav 3-spd so the difference between the to seems like night and day. While it's no tire scorcher it seems plenty peppy to me for a four-banger w/ auto but I haven't really strung it out since I'm waiting for a bit to break it in.

wmoses - thanks for the input, my wife's brother is a mechanic so I think we'll do it ourselves sometime so at I know that we're being careful with it. It's not that I don't trust the service dept at the dealer but I figure that if I can do it myself at least I know it's being done right.

The Tiburon is NOT in the top 10 most stolen list. At least not in the U.S. Someone posted a link from a Canadian source with the Tiburon being in the top 10 in that country. And I believe the source for that information were for the 2000 models. There is not enough data on the auto theft levels of the 2003's yet. And I seriously doubt that it (the Tiburon) would ever fall into the top 10 most stolen cars in this country. They simply do not sell enough of them here so that would be possible.

I bought my 2002 GT in Toronto for 24K cdn out the door last week. Love the car. Check Engine light came on, I went to dealer. Dealer reset it to not display and told me to crank the gas cap 3 times. Drove to Detroit on half the tank.
    Couple of questions.

How do i know I got the 2002 model. Sales guy says that if you see a 2U in the vin number then it is a 2002.

I bought the floor mats. They only say Elantra on it. Is this a canadian thing only?

Can anybody tell me how to install a new antena. I'm not much of handy man.

look on the home page for Edmunds.

    http://www.edmunds.com/reviews/list/top10/45757/article.html

Now I admit it is for 98,99 and 2000. But that is a poor track record. esp. if this years model is nicer. I'm sure the Insurance company will use that for comparision. What else do they have to go on?

    No offence ment.

  • jimbeaumijimbeaumi Member Posts: 620
That list is for insurance losses, not theft frequency.
  • jocko9jocko9 Member Posts: 65
as Jimbeaumi stated, those are insurance loss rankings, not frequency of theft. Look at the cars on the list and think about it, do you really believe that a Kia Sephia or a Suzuki Esteem would be in the top 10 of most stolen cars in the U.S.? Car thevies might be sinister, conniving and sneaky, but most aren't stupid. LOL
  • fgaydosfgaydos Member Posts: 319
Being at the top of that list is not cause for joy no matter what the reason.

Anyway, I know I saw somewhere it is well liked by thives,

    http://carpoint.msn.com/advice/windowshop.aspx?contentid=4020249&src=windowshopping

This shows that the frequency of claims is about twice the average for Tiberon.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to testing the Gt and am leaning toward buying if the tranny is half decent.

  • donl68donl68 Member Posts: 31
Just wondering what makes you think you didn't get a 2002 if thats what you were supposed to have bought?

I got rid of the stock antenna, its so ugly, and replaced it with a stubby one I bought on eBay and it looks so much better. They could have at least made the stock antenna black. All I had to do was twist off the stock antenna and twist on the new one. If you do this be sure to take the rubber O ring off of the stock antenna and put it on the new antenna.

Also, the mats in my car say Elantra GT. Maybe they just gave you mats for the GLS thinking you would not know the difference.

FYI...I too bought the Euro antenna on ebay and was happy for a while. I noticed the radio reception was lacking and after long highway trips (2-3 hours) the antenna would look bent over and limp. Not happy.

I went to Pep boys and bought the "Universal Replacement Antenna" for $7.99. This is a 17 inch black fiberglass rod with wire rapped around the outside and covered in vinyl. It happens to mount right on the adapter that comes with the Euro antenna so you can only use this one with the Euro adapter. The base of it has a nice brass connector with a spring that presses down on the stud as you tighten it (nice design). Reception is much better than the Euro and it looks more Euro that the Euro. I'll post a picture when I get home tonight.

  • jimbeaumijimbeaumi Member Posts: 620
Hey guys, I like the idea of replacing my stock antenna, but for a different reason (looks fine to me). It is not made of a flexible metal, and I need to take it off when running through the car wash (winters!), otherwise it bends. I let that happen just once, and the disfiguration wasn't horrific, but still bent. My question about the black antenna is: how will it hold up in the car wash? Please don't beat me up too much about using auto-wash. In summer I compensate by waxing it well a few times, and the car wash I go to is pretty gentle, and I have Michigan salt to contend with.:)
  • 5port5port Member Posts: 395
No hassle about the car wash (I use them myself in the dead of winter:) The Euro Antenna is a soft plyable rubber antenna about 13 inches long. Its not a good idea to put any type of antenna thru the wash but between the two the Euro would survive.

The URA antenna in the picture is a stiff, 17 inch fiberglass rod wrapped with wire. It would never make it.

I have both of them and I prefer the URA from pepboys. I use a car cover and have to remove the antenna every night. They both fit in the driver's door pocket. The reception on the URA is better, looks better(IMO) and is easier to put on/take off. The URA can only be used with the Euro adapter or it wont fit on the car. The adapters that are supplied with it do not fit the GT.

I treat the leather with Lexol during every oil change. I've talked to many people, including people with horse equipment, and they all say Lexol is the best!

Well, after several weeks of research and a lot of very helpful information from this board, I'm finally about to buy my GT. I've been waiting for the dealer to get the one I want - Pewter / manual / Pkg 11 w/ sunroof/ABS/Traction / mudguards / floormats / cargo net I've gotten the dealer down to a price of $14,175 - any opinions on this offer before I sign any papers?
  • joffficerjoffficer Member Posts: 169
That seems like a rare one. I definitely recommend the ABS, sunroof and TCS. Not to mention Pewter was my first choice in colors. With the 5spd (and that package) they seem hard to come by.
Best of luck to you... sounds like a good price. I got my Auto GT with everything plus a spoiler for just over 15k. Make sure they don't try to give you a higher interest rate (if you go with their loans). My dealer tried to sneak in a rate 2 points higher then average until I got up and started to leave...... they promptly dropped to below average rates ;)
  • iokadiaiokadia Member Posts: 2
I don't know, why I'm asking if it is 2002 or not. I just can't bring myself to trust the dealers. Hope I am wrong.
My hazard lights button is not red, like in the picture in edmunds photo gallery. The CD player looks a little different too. I'm still happy with the car. I have no regrets so far.

This is really my first brand new car. I also own a 97 ford escort, bought it used. I never took care of it in terms of cleaning it or looks. Figured it was a cheap car why waste the effort.
But after buying the GT, I feel like keeping it looking pretty all the time, even though it is not that expensive.

I'm going to drive down to Windsor, Ont. and buy the ZainoBros car care kit. Hear it is remarkable and may eliminate going to car wash so often.

Hyundai has revealed 2003 Korean domestic Elantra (in Korea, AVANTE XD). You may have seen the plastic covers over seats in dealership stockyard carrying a lable "XD leather(leather in Korean)" for Elantra GT. XD is project name of elantra.

    The changes for Korean 2003 Elanatra are as below;

    - 2.0 VVT engine for selected models (1.5L engine is prominent in Korea)
    - Solar control windshield
    - New alloy wheel design
    - Chromed rear garnish (the plastic piece over license plate)
    - Red tinted tail lamp cover(like honda odyssey)
    - New fabric seat pattern
    - Available beige interior
    - Improved seat support (what does it mean?)
    - Available Aluminum pedals (with sports package option)

The VVT version of current Beta engine has only 2hp gain over previous 141hp. I have told current Beta 2.0 engine has 148hp but it was wrong. Hyundai has corrected its output to 141 for 2001 MY.

Hyundai is expecting to install all new 4-cylinder Theta engine(with variable valve timing) for 2004 Elantra. Theta engine will be high-revving engine. Rumor says the redline is 7800(I still can't believe it.)

Hyundai also has plan to provide Theta engine for Tiburon but it will be after the quality is refined with Elantra for a while. (But Tiburon GT with V6 "Delta" motor will not expect to have change. Only Tiburon with 4-cylinder "Beta" motor will be affected, but maybe in 2005 MY.)

I was planning to wait for 2003 Elantra GT. But now I decide to go to dealership for 2002 stocks. I don't want to pay extra money for such a little change(both in appearance and in performance.)

5port.. I originally went to an auto store and got a replacement antenna and it did not fit. That is when I got the one on eBay. So far I am satisfied with the one from eBay but now that I know I can get another from the auto store i will keep that in mind if I need a new one. The one on your car looks great. I have not taken any long trips but I have a few coming up and if mine looks limp I will definitely consider the stiffer one.

iokadia.. My GT is a 2002 and my hazard button is not red either. My CD player however looks just like the one in the gallery. There is a board on here about Zaino under the maintenance section. I use Zaino and the shine you get is awesome, I can't say enough about that. I am satisfied with Zaino and will be adding more layers this weekend and doing my father's car as well. He saw how mine looked and wanted some for his car too. I am not sure about it eliminating going to the car wash. I still have to wash my car. Good luck with the Zaino and remember apply thin coats!

dolph... That is an excellent price. I paid 15.4 for the exact same car but it took me a month to find it and I was getting worried because my lease was coming to an end and I had not found a new car yet. They eventually found the car I wanted but it was in another city about 50 or so miles away. Given that it was difficult to find, I did not haggle much on the price. I think your price is below TMV also. Go for it.

jofficer... I am currently using Zaino leather products but I too have heard that Lexol was great too. I will be trying that when my Zaino runs out. Does Lexol have different types of conditioners and cleaners or just one?

    Hi all:

I am looking to install a blaupunkt car receiver and an in-dash cd changer. Has anyone done this? If so, would like to hear from you.

Also, I used to have a whooshing/whistling noise from the AC every 5 minutes or so while I had in on and driving. Anyone else have the same problem?

    Thanks
  • 5port5port Member Posts: 395
See this link for replacing the cd/radio :

     <http://gwebworks.com/elantra_gt/garage2.shtml>

As far as the squeal in the AC I had it when mine was new. Now at 8500 mi my AC is quiet and efficient. Some people had the dealer replace a valve in the AC with no effect. My advice is to stay with it for a while, it may disappear.

Beta engine may in fact have 148 hp in markets outside the U.S. It is 140 hp here.

I have been reviewing this board for the last 6 months and I keep coming back to the GT . I currently own a 99 Elantra GLS and I just graduated college and landed myself a job . I have looked at everything from Honda to Jeep to toyota to volkswagon and the GT just keeps me interested!!! So I am contemplating the plunge in the next month or so . I was just wondering how everyone feel on the highway at around 70MPH and over - my GLS is light and tends to be taken by wind easily and it bothers me. I like to feel in control of my car at high speed . So what do you owners think about your GT's performance over 65MPH?
  • th003gth003g Member Posts: 149
i really cant speak for the elantra at any speed on highway under 70... LOL
its really a matter of getting different rims and tires...i switched for 205/45/17s and am very happy...more road feel, and noise... but more stable than my sister's 2002 GLS with my 15's...car is not light feeling as in my fathers 1995 accent...
that thing is soo fun to drive over 70 because you get the feeling your doing 100 with all the road noise and engine noise...
not so with GT or GLS for that matter... the 01 and later elantras are more solid feeling than the 99, more wight and more insulation...very acceptable quiet at speed...

While the GT and the GLS do not differ significantly in terms of weight, there is a big difference in terms of steering, suspension and aerodynamics. This makes for a very stable and a pretty quiet ride at those speeds.

Performance is very nice at those speeds also since you are close or into the sweet spot of the power band, depending on what gear you are in. I ususally drive between 60 and 80 mph on the freeways here and all it takes is a quick stab on the gas at, say 65, to overtake and before you know it you are doing 80 and still not feeling as though you are going fast. And this is on the stock 15inch Michelin H-rated rubber that comes with the car.

Best thing would be to take the car for a test drive and judge for yourself.

I bought my Elantra GT in February and now have over 10,000 miles of mostly highway driving. I drove my car from Central Illinois to Vancouver, BC and back in July and the car did very well. I had my first oil change just before the trip and that was my first time to get the car serviced. No problems at all right from the sale up to now.

Gas Mileage: When I left for my trip, my gas mileage was around 19 mpg of mostly city driving. I also have a bit of a lead foot, have a tendency to accelerate too quickly and my a/c is usually on, so that's pretty good gas mileage for me. After the trip and at 10,000+ miles, my gas mileage is between 28-29 mpg.

Highway Driving: This car does great on the highway. It was way too easy to speed. Like wmoses, I would overtake a car going about 75 and, next thing I know, I'm close to 100. This was while driving through South Dakota, Wyoming and Montana where hardly anyone seemed to drive below 80. My mom was with me and she usually nags me to slow down, but she didn't notice our speed. She had no idea at all that we were going that fast. I did have a little problem in a couple of areas with very gusty winds, but the good handling on my GT got me safely through.

Comfort and Roominess: It still amazes my friends how much I can put in this car. I moved recently and I was able to load a full-size 8-inch thick futon mattress plus boxes in the back with the seats folded down. During the July road trip, I had one other adult passenger, two 50-lb dogs, a large cooler, dog supplies, 2 small suitcases, folded dog crate and miscellaneous shopping bags and overnight cases. Absolutely none of the windows were obstructed, the dogs had plenty of room to stretch out and move around and we humans did not feel claustraphobic. We were all quite comfortable for the entire trip. I did all the driving and my back didn't bother me at all. I like that driver's seat. Cruise control saved my cramping legs.

Complaints: Only one. My a/c emits an unpleasant doggy odor. I'm sure it's from having the dogs in the car, but I haven't figured out how to get rid of the smell. I also experienced the fuel gauge problem after one fill-up during the trip, but it was ok by the next fill-up. I made sure to screw the gas cap on tightly the next time and that seemed to do the trick.

    Conclusion: I love my car!
  • risa5risa5 Member Posts: 23
While in Vancouver, I parked my car nose-to-nose with another car that was a very similar color (chianti red). I saw it's logo on the front and it was a Saab. When I got out of my car to walk into the store, I had to do a double-take and have a little giggle. The two cars looked like twins. I knew that the Elantra GT does look a bit like the older Saab's, but I didn't think they'd look that similar. I wasn't the only one to do a double-take. A couple of people even came up and asked me about my car. Not too shabby for $16K (tax incl.).
  • jimbeaumijimbeaumi Member Posts: 620
I've used the "comparator" on Hyundai's website www.hyundaiusa.com and others, and the GT is almost identical in size and interior room to the Saab 9-3, not to mention looking alot like it, as you found out. The new 9-3 is bigger and no longer a hatch, but plenty of the previous model on the road for you to park near. Aren't these cars great at 100 mph?
  • joffficerjoffficer Member Posts: 169
I've only seen the Lexol leather cleaner, treatment, and vinyl treatment (with sunblock) at Pepboys. They might have more, but I didn't see the need.

I still have the A/C whistle/squeal. I though maybe it would go away (hoped), but it's still there. Only seems to be while driving, especially when accelerating. It's not loud, but it's annoying.... SHOULDN'T be doing it. The first time I had it to the dealer they tightened the belt. That seems like bs to me , because I thought the A/C runs off the sepentine belt (with the tensioner)! I've heard of a few other Elantra owners with the same problem, and no fix. One owner said they returned the car under the lemon law! Anyway.. it's going back.

I had my heart on buying a '99 or newer Saab 9-3. Loved the looks of them, hatchback utility and I have a devotion to European designed cars. First off all, I really couldn't afford one and when I did test drive a '99 with about 34,000 miles on it (for $17,000!) I was not impressed all that much. It was nice, yes, but not worth the money. Then I saw my first ad for an Elantra GT and it was love at first sight! I think the GT looks almost as good as the Saab (I think the front nose of the GT is cropped a bit too much from a side angle) but otherwise it is a gorgeous European looking car for half the money of the Saab and more than half as good as the Saab. I have a Saab trunk badge hanging up in my rearview mirror and I think I want a vanity tag that says "NotSaab". :)

I'll have to say I was a bit skeptical at first. The thought of taking a compact car with my wife and two 70lb Lab pups on a road trip from San Diego through central Oregon, over to Boise Idaho and back. But with the price of gas and the V-10 in my truck I decided 'What the heck'. The interior was outfitted with sheepskin seat covers for comfort and window tint to reduce the heat. A sheet stretched across the cargo area to provide a hair barrier and we were done. To make room for the dog beds I installed a Yakima roof rack and a Thule Excursion cargo box (so much for all the gas money I was going to save by taking the little car). I was only able to get 600 break in miles on the motor before the trip so took it easy the first leg. All I can say is WOW! What a wonderful running car. Even with the cargo box up top, speeds up to 80mph and a new motor we were able to get 27-33mpg. The automatic pulled the mountain passes with ease. The car rode fairly quiet (noise from the rack and box) and stable. The only wind buffeting came from the back of semi trucks. The car was flawless. The only problem was some skipping on a couple of CD's. I don't know if my copies were the cause or not. I saw several Pewter Elantras but mine was the only GT. Back home with 3004 miles on it now and ready to do it again. Sorry for the long post. Regards,
    Ron

Check your CDs for smudges or scratches before going to the dealer. This is great: the only "fix" to recommend on the Elantra (for the most part) is clean CDs. Love mine too.
  • dolphinz9dolphinz9 Member Posts: 4
Brought home my new Elantra GT 5-speed last night. Pewter, loaded, with sunroof, ABC/traction control, mud guards, etc. Took the dealer weeks to find it, says it is the only one like it with those options, in that color, he could find in the state of CA right now. So far - I love it!
  • mpgmanmpgman Member Posts: 723
Just sat in the driver and passenger seat of a new CR-V. Guess what? The GT had more leg room, especially on the passenger side and I thought the seats were more comfortable too. Almost 26,000 miles so far. Pewter automatic with the ABS/traction/roof combo.
  • desgdesg Member Posts: 52
What you call a Compact car in the States is considered a fairly normal size car in other parts of the world - the elantra in many parts of the world (Europe) comes standard with a 1.6 Litre engine, where I live it comes with 1.8 and 2.0 litre engines.

No reason such a vehicle cannot easily do a trip, especially these days with the improvements that have been made in cars. The only things really noticable is that the acceleration is a little slower and the fuel economy better :)
  • ronmcqronmcq Member Posts: 16
I guess the compact size can take on different meanings in different places. Compared to my extended cab F250 with a V-10 motor (at 10-12mpg)it's definitely a compact. With the seats folded down I was amazed at the amount of room for my two dogs/beds, ice chest and other small packages. That my fuel mileage and handling wasn't impacted severely by the Thule cargo box on the roof was a pleasant surprise. With only two weeks of in town commutes on a new car my biggest (and unfounded) concern was the possibility of a break down in the middle of nowhere. After a thorough cleaning and waxing I noticed several chips in the paint so I guess it's down to the dealer for a bottle of touch-up, with a lot of the Oregon roads freshly oiled and graveled it's what I expected to see. Another reason I'm glad I took this car instead of my $30k truck.
On another subject, I'd like to replace my radio antenna with a black steel one. Does anyone know of a source for these? I don't want the short rubber euro-antenna or glass replacement.
    Thanks,

If you don't mind the length, why no try and get a genuine Hyundai mast for, say, the Tiburon. I believe that it is black with a wire wrapped all around it. The trouble with simply getting a universal aftermarket mast is that the screw in adapter might not fit. The Elantra GT mast base screw is a larger diameter than most aftermarket adapters.

I installed Eurolite Xenon bulbs in my low and high beams and was disappointed in the performance. While they looked cool (slight bluish tinge) and more of a flourescent (daylight) colour light pool on the road, they were markedly less bright than my stock bulbs. See my Garage Page for before and after pictures. This is my first disappointing "upgrade". I will try it for a week and may revert next Saturday.

auto trans. After researching different cars over the internet for the past year and driving my husband nuts telling him about it, I went over to the local dealer after seeing a rally red come into their internet listing during the past week. There were other people looking at it (no!) but they moved along to different colors. I enjoyed my test drive and bought it on the spot. See the Elantra Owners What Did You Pay board for price details. The 4 cylinder will be a change for me after having driven V-6's for the past 12 years, but it seems pretty peppy. Most of my driving is in-town, 25-40 mph, living only 7 miles from work, so I don't really need a zoom-zoom. Having owned a Sonata, the feel of the car was not at all foreign to me. One thing the salesman showed me that I did not know was the back seat cushions could tumble forward so the seat backs could lie flat. This car will make transporting two dogs or garden supplies a lot easier than my sedan.

I do have a question/comment. The dealer only filled up the tank to half (forgot to ask that a full tank and touch-up paint be in the contract, duh), so I filled it up this morning. I was surprised that the nozzle only seemed to go in half way. The path into the tank is at a different angle that the pump nozzle, so it can't seem to go in any farther. It looked weird to see the rubber safety collar sticking up in the air instead of over the opening. It still filled fine (took 8 gallons)and shut off fine. Is this normal?
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
    Yes, it is normal.

WMoses, thanks for the Tiburon tip. I'll be taking the GT into the dealer for it's first oil change Monday morning and will look into the antenna there. I'll more than likely opt for the Fumota oil valve soon so this will be the perfect oportunity to see what the dealer has to offer. I tried my Ford antenna but found the size different.
    Thanks,

Just bought a new washer from Sears, and brought my GT to pick it up. I have a hitch and a trailer for the GT but didn't feel like towing it. The dock attendant guys at Sears took one look at my hatchback and said,"You're going to fit this in there? Where is your truck?" I lifted the hatch, and the washer (in the box) fit with no problem.
It was cool, the guys looked surprised, and I told them they should make a commercial about it.

Anyway, 18,000 miles on the GT and still love it.
Will probably be trading in my wifes 2001 Elantra GLS on a new FWD LX Sante Fe next month...

It fit in the back with the hatch CLOSED? Yikes! And I thought I did well moving my entire audio system (components in original cartons) including speakers and CDs in the back of my '87 Lynx (one trip). My hat is off to you!

for the A/C whistle....squeal? I seem to have narrowed it down to: While driving, around 2-4k RPM, louder while accelerating (of course with the A/C on).

Tomorrow I'm taking it into the dealer for a look. I remember someone having the expansion valve changed (with no results). Any other ideas I can ask the mechanic to check?
    Thanks, Jeff

i would like to have my oil changed at some place other than the dealer but am afraid whoever does it will rip the oil pan. I remember reading here about a drain plug (?) that will avoid this happening. can someone please refresh my addled brain? thanks

I installed the valve with the nipple and works great.

I drive in a LOT of traffic everyday. I'm CLOSE to getting a GT but feel the AT is better suited to my driving (even though I know the 5-speed is more fun...). Are any of you GT owners with Automatic regretting your purchase.... and vise-versa? Is this automatic a reliable one? The GLS sedans I drove with AT seemed to hunt a lot and also not downshift easily. Thanks!
