Any word on Hyundai resolving the problem with the oil pan drainage plug. Seems like a number of postings mention this issue and resolve it with aftermarket add-ons. What would keep Hyundai from addressing this?

Cost maybe? FWIW, I don't think that there is a "problem" with the drain pan, per se. Just that maybe using a brass insert in the ribbed aluminum pan as a design improvement would "ruggedize" the threads and make it less susceptible to stripping by the untrained "oil changer".

Many of these people don't realise that there is a torque specification on oil pan plugs and I am sure not many (a) use a fresh compression washer every time, or (b) use a torque wrench on the plug.

In the interim, I would suggest (if you don't want to change it yourself) getting a Fumoto valve as described on the Drivers & Believers website. That way they never have to unscrew anything. I just ordered one myself (less than $30 total for one with nipple) in anticipation of my upcoming 10,500 mile oil change.

I sent you a couple of emails regarding the weights of the factory GT wheels and have not had the pleasure of a reply. Maybe I was using an old email address.

There were also a couple of other questions I had. Could you please email me (wmoses@houston.rr.com) and I will re-send the email.

    th003g,

I live near you on Long Island and I average about 24 mpg (with a heavy foot). I think your foot is a little heavier.

Watch out for those pot holes in the city! I have a friend with 17" wheels and he cracked both of them one day coming back from NYC.

Speaking of trips I was crazy enough to be driving to Conn Monday during that high wind/rain storm. All roads were heavily flooded. The GT felt stable and solid the whole 2 1/2 hr trip to Lime Rock. Even on the Throgs Neck Bridge where the wind and rain were sideways (hurricane force) the GT was stable. I have new respect for the Michelin tires (though I still think they cost too much). At one point we were heading down a fairly steep hill on a rain soaked road and I notice the light turned red sooner than anticipated. I jumped all over the brakes (normally a no-no with non-abs) and the car came to smooth non-eventful stop. My friend commented that we were pulling a high amount of G s in the wet. Credit the tire compound and the 4-wheel disc brakes.

I test drove a 5-speed last night and was a little concerned about something... When depressing the clutch (and releasing the gas) the engine seemed to rev. I found I had to release the gas pedal for a couple of seconds and ten depress the clutch to change gears. My old Subaru had this problem. Do all elantras do this? If they do I'm getting an automatic as I find it impossible to quickly change gears without the engine surging between shifts.
  • 5port5port Member Posts: 395
This was one of my first complaints to the service dept. I was told "they all do that". They also said this is designed to help you shift (an automatic heal and toe effect). Whatever, all I know is at 8500 mi the "slow to return to idle" effect is completely gone.

I've had other new cars do this. When my GT was new the idle would literally hang at 2K rpm sometimes and slowly return to 750 rpm. Some people have had the idle solenoid changed with good results.

PS: It really isnt nessecary to post the same question to the GT and sedan list. Just post to the appropriate list. It will be seen (I saw both).

i would like to order the Fumoto Engine Oil Drain Valve for my car since i do not intend to change the oil myself, should i order the one with the nipple or without the nipple? thanks
  • dustbaildustbail Member Posts: 34
Its personal preference if you ever have the opportunity to watch the oil come out of the valve wide open it literally shoots a few inches, I’m certain that the shop that changes your oil will appreciate you having the nipple but really wont benefit unless you have a hose for them to use as well. Changing the oil has never been easier. If you will have all your oil changes preformed at a shop, the nipple probably isn’t necessary.

does anyone have the hood deflector, does it work and is it worth the price? What about the full mask. Also, how difficult is it to install either one? Anyone esle notice that with the lights and fog lights on, there are a ton of insects meeting an untimely death on their winshield and front bumper?
  • goby2000goby2000 Member Posts: 9
I have the hood deflector installed on my 02 GT and I would definitely recommend it. (providing you like the look of it) I rarely get large amounts of bug juice on my windshield. That is probably the biggest difference between the mask and the deflector. I've also heard that at Hwy speeds it can deflect small stones.

wmoses .. i got a new email addy since I got cable... i subscribed to your mailing list under it...
i do not know the weight of the gt wheel best bet to find out would be to look on ebay for a set and find out the shipping weight... in comparison... the gt i drive is slower than my sister's gls of the same if not newer model year... reasons being... slightly heavier gt b/c of it glass and hatch...and los the increased rolling resistance of the 17 inch wheel and larger contact patch... but I like the looks of my rims better....
as for the bugflector accesory... i thought about it and decided to go without it or the hood bra.. expensiver for one... and i did not want anything to spoil the lines of the hood... and in my opinion a car should not have a bugflector on it... its reserved for trucks...

but they do work... i drove to binghamton in family landcruiser thats equipped with grille gaurd and aformentioned bugflector... not may bugs on windshield... but tons on front end of car.. all ove rthe grille gaurda and grille itself...
drove the same route 2 days ago in the GT... though i started driving back at 5 instead of 2 pm... (more mosquito's at night) no bugflector on gt and the car looks like someone stood in front of it with a gattling gun full of mosquito's and fired away at it.. some bug guts ran the distance from top of grill to washer nozzles... nasty...and of course i forgot to wipe off my windshield when I stopped for gas...ended up not being able to see the huge potholes i hit on the Cross bronx expressway...
my old montero 2 door... the box that it was had a deflector and still had bugs kamikaze onto the windhshield when i drove to school in rochester ny... so the effectiveness depends on speed of car and aerodynamics of said car...

    Tom --

Thanks for the response on the weight of the wheels. I figured that you had to have gotten a new email address, and that was confirmed after I saw your new subscription to the Elantra GT mailing list. I sent you an email to your new address before reading this forum.

As for the increased rolling resistance of the larger wheels -- you are absolutely right. Many people don't realise (or don't care) that this is the penalty for nice fat wheels. Putting more grip means loss of velocity and that can only be offset by increasing horsepower and torque. :-)

Good suggestion about checking on eBay or wherever for a set of wheels for sale and getting the weight from that, although if it is only an estimate then it would not be accurate. I will only change to a wheel of equal or lighter weight.

I liked how you described the bit about the bug guts obscuring your vision so much that you hit the potholes -- hope the rims are not damaged. I feel the same way as you do regarding bug deflectors and hate hood bras because they scuff-damage the paint.

I bought a Fumoto engine oil drain and installed it last night in my '02 GLS with 2,200 miles. I bought it mainly because of the posts I've seen here regarding stripped drain plugs. After changing the drain plug to the Fumoto valve, I feel someone would have to be extremely incompetent to strip or crossthread the drain plug. The original plug was in very tight and probably took 60-70 ft/lbs to remove and has coarse threads. I've been changing my own oil for 35 years and the Hyundai design is as good as any I've seen. I wouldn't buy the Fumoto valve to prevent the stripped threads but for easier cleaner oil changes. I suspect the stripped thread issue is extremely rare.

btw mr7 are a hefty 24lbs each... heavier than stock but thats what your gonna get if you want style.... the lighweight rims all look the same... can you say rays engineering....volk racing te37... damn expensive... my cousin has them on his 1999 Civic SI... 2grand just for the rims...

hi all, i just bought a 2002, manual, and it has about 700 miles on it. i've noticed that it doesn't like to go into reverse. even when the car has been running for awhile, it takes several attempts to shift into reverse. any suggestions? thanks
  • 5port5port Member Posts: 395
Yes, my 5 spd does the same thing. A good way to deal with stubborn reverse gears is to double-clutch. Instead of holding your foot on the clutch and hammering away at the stick, put the stick in neutral and take your foot off the clutch. Then depress the clutch again and try reverse. It usually goes in the second time.

Seems that I've had that situation with every manual transmission I've owned. '78 Corolla, ex's '78 Civic, the dreaded '86 Pony from hell, '89 Colt, hubby's '98 Accent,'99 Accent and current '02 GT. I do what 5port does and no problem. Funny, I always thought it was me being too nonchalant in my clutching. :)

You can also try putting the shifter in a forward gear first and then putting it into reverse. I've noticed that putting the shifter in 3rd gear first allows the shifter to snick smoothly into reverse on my 03 Aerio SX.
  • storkdudestorkdude Member Posts: 26
My sister's Accord with a 5-speed did this as well. Turned out to be due to emissions programming and the delay was intentional. An annoying quirk to be sure. I never noticed it on an Accord automatic of the same year. I wonder if the cause is the same on yours, which would mean that ALL sticks do it. Mine is an auto, so I wouldn't know.
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
Every 5-speed I've owned over the past 26 years has been sticky going into reverse. The worst was a '95 Mystique, which made you pull up on a ring while you were shifting. By accident, I found the shift-into-forward-gear-first trick works well on the Elantra.
  • joffficerjoffficer Member Posts: 169
From my 1951 International truck (4 sp), 1981 mercury Lynx (worst of all!) and 1993 toyota, they all needed a shift into 1st for a smooth reverse shift. Almost felt as if it was lining something up, or spinning the reverse gear up to speed (syncro's?)

    Hi Folks,

I moved to Arizona from Indiana in July with my GTi (auto tranny) and it performed flawlessly on the 2,000 mile trip while loaded out to the max with the back seats down. I have no idea how I packed so much crap in to it, but it handled perfectly and endeared itself to me forever.

Engine has loosened up considerably now as I am approaching 7K miles.

I was also delighted that my GT was the only one I had seen in Tucson... until I saw another one parked in a parking lot just the other day. I think that guy and me are the only two GTers in southern Arizona.

I love my car... and so do the ladies.

I was talking to my uncle back in late August and he mentioned to me that he read in the Chicago tribune that the Elantra hatchbacks had a recall issued on them for weak C pillars. I have searched all over the internet and at NHTSA official recall website and I'm not able to find any recall on this vehicle.

Does anybody know anything about any recall on the Elantra GT for weak C-pillars (that's what my uncle told me) or is my uncle smoking too much buddha?

    Thanks much,
    archangel4

Back in July I was cruising from St. Louis to Indianapolis in my GT. Just chillin... riding along in the middle of nowhere down the interstate, and I hear this "beep beep" from this car that is passing me. I jump up because I thought something was going on, and I see that this car is ... another ELANTRA GT!!! (The first other one I had seen on the road since I bought my new car a couple weeks earlier.)

So anyway this cutie is driving the car with a friend of hers (another girl in the front seat). I let them get up ahead of me a little ways, they get in the right lane, and after a minute or so I am feeling the love so now it's my turn... i take to the passing lane and as I pull up next to them they are like waving at me and stuff. It was GT love, through and through.

So anyway I get up ahead of them now, and we are driving for a while... I see in my rear view mirror that they move in to the left lane and are preparing to pass me, but about that time I'm coming up behind a semi truck that is slow moving, so when they get up close to me on the left, I jump over and take the left lane in front of them, push the accelerator down and blast off... of course I blow the semi away and rocket up about a quarter mile ahead of the girls. I retake the right lane and decrease speed. I see the girls coming up on my left hand side and as they pass me by, all I see is the driver nodding her head in an "awwww yeah" fashion and the girl in the passenger seat, whose face I can't see, is giving me the "raise the roof" sign with her hands.

It was absolutely classic. Had to share it with you all. I love what this car does to people. And please, if you see another GTer on the road, stop and recognize, and share the love.

    Thanks,
    archangel4

How do making modifications to the rims and changing the bulb types of your lights on the Elantra affect the warranty? I wonder if the warranty is made void by making these modifications to the car?

Does anyone know about this and is there any way I can find out? Should I just talk to my local dealer about what modifications are allowed and what are not?

    Thanks,

It does carry cargo well,eh? I'm a musician and I cant believe how much equipment I can stuff into it. I've heard peolpe say that the engine continues to loosen even after 10K. There are GTs all around me (I live 1 block from the dealer).

I've not heard of any such recall. What would they do cut and reweld them? Really I thing he is smoking something.

Sounds like a good car for single guys like us. I've not had that encounter. Course for something like that to happen in NY it would have to be 3:00 am in the morning (no traffic-space on the roads). Cool...

    My present mods:
    1) K&N air filter
    2) B&M short shift kit
    3) Fumoto oil drain valve
    4) McCulloch HID low beam system
    5) Fiamm two tone horns
    6) 17 inch black antenna

I've been to the dealer with these numerous times and they never made a comment. I'm hearing the same thing from other Elantra owners. I believe it goes like this...If you are having a problem with a particular system in the car you must remove the mod (related to that system) and prove to the dealer that your mod was/is not causing the problem. All dealers are slighly different on this and I would talk to your service writer.

I believe the Accent had a recall related to roof pillars, but I think that was a B-pillar, not a C. Uncles should not be allowed to guess while smoking.

Hi all --great info on my next car....
As I contemplate ownership of a GT near the end of the model year, I was wondering about the possibility of getting a better deal on an '02 as the model year winds down. Any idea when the '03s arrive, and if in fact just prior to that is a good time to get a "last minute" deal on an '02? I don't really care about the depreciation issues on an '02 vs '03, as I will almost certainly drive the GT as long as it will drive....
Sorry if all of this has been posted previously.

did anyone hear anything regarding misrepresentations by hyundai on horsepower - that for one of their models they advertised more horsepower at the wheels then it had so they are offering rebates or other compensation? I heard only part of the story and understand that hyundai will be sending out letters to those affected - really...I just heard it on NPR radio..

More details, if anyone is interested...

    Press Release:
Hyundai Motor America Announces Horsepower Rating Errors
FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif., September 9, 2002 - Hyundai Motor America (HMA) announced today that the horsepower ratings on some of its vehicles have been mistakenly reported in the company's marketing materials. The error applies to the materials only and has no impact on the safety or reliability of any vehicles.

The ratings error involves a number of vehicle lines over a period of several years, with a weighted average overstatement of 4.6 horsepower.

These errors occurred because Hyundai Motor America did not have an established procedure in place to verify that our preliminary horsepower figures matched the actual horsepower.

"I am very regretful for these errors and for any concerns it raises among Hyundai customers," said HMA President and CEO Finbarr O'Neill. "We are announcing these errors because we want our relationship with our customers, our dealers, and all our business partners to be open and honest. We are also offering our assurance that we are taking aggressive measures to prevent errors of this nature from happening again."

"As an expression of goodwill and an attempt to demonstrate how important Hyundai customers are to us, we are offering certain enhancements to those individuals whose model's horsepower ratings were misprinted by more than four percent. For the 2000 model year forward we offer a choice of three warranty-enhancement options or, for 1999 model year and earlier vehicles, five-year roadside assistance coverage," said O'Neill. The warranty-enhancement options for 2000 model year forward include:

    > Extending Roadside Assistance Benefit from five years/unlimited miles to 10 years unlimited miles, or

    > Extending New Vehicle Limited Warranty from five years/60,000 miles to 6 years/72,000 miles, or

    > Extending Powertrain Limited Warranty from 10 years/100,000 miles to 12 years/120,000 miles for original owners

The owners or lessees of the identified vehicles will receive a letter from HMA over the course of the next few weeks detailing these options and providing information on how they can be
activated. In the interim, customers can obtain information about these options by contacting a special toll-free consumer hotline at 800-218-9797 or contacting www.hyundaistatus.com

To ensure against any future error, Hyundai Motor America has also established procedures that include ensuring only actual horsepower ratings for each engine are used in marketing materials. Prior to publication, materials will be approved by the Director of Engineering and Design Analysis to ensure numbers match correct horsepower ratings.

Hyundai Motor America, headquartered in Fountain Valley, Calif., is a subsidiary of Hyundai Motor Company of Korea. Hyundai cars and sport utility vehicles are distributed in the U.S. by Hyundai Motor America and are sold and serviced by more than 590 dealers nationwide. Hyundai stands behind the quality and performance of its vehicles 100 percent and backs them with America's Best Warranty.

My dad just sent me an emai on that topic, but I haven't seen article myself (Cleveland Plain Dealer). His summary of article was
"in today's PD they admitted to overstating horsepower of cars. about 4.6 hp. .
they're offering owners of 2000 and newer choice of extending roadside assistance to 10 yrs from
5, increasing warranty to 6 yts or 72k miles from 5/60 or lengthening powertrain warranty to 12
yrs or 120k from 10/100. Get to your dealer to make a deal."

Guess we need to find out which models this might pertain to...

another note, I have 17K mi on my 01 gt and love it so far.
Only problems w/ mine so far has been:
driver door lock wont lock/unlock w/ keyless entry anymore
Check engine light came on due to some sensor by gas tank-( I was told that it wasn't gas cap related) but got fixed.

I did a no no the other day trying to clean bugs off my car w. a power spayer at the self serve car wash. Using high power rinse I accidentally sprayed off about an inch of red paint/tape?? off the front bumpe, now has exposed black color.
Anyways my car runs great, and the locks will be looked at during next oil change.
    Still happy in Ohio

The 2003's are already on the lots... in fact, here in NY/NJ... there are few 2002's left. If you're going to bite the bullet, now is the time. Remember, some dealers have storage lots where inventory is located so they may have a zillion 2003's just waiting to be shipped to the lot. The vehicles are exactly the same... no changes for 2003. Also, the idea of "losing" by getting a 2002 vs. 2003 isn't always true. You might have an older model, but lower milage. In other words, in 2 years, You'll have a 2002 but with 3 months less milage than a 2003.

Hyundai Canada has set up a website where you can enter your VIN to determine if your vehicle's horsepower was misrepresented.

    The website is http://www.hyundaiupdate.ca/english/index.asp

(and no, my 2002 GT didn't qualify)

  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
What did you lose? No one's Tib or Santa Fe or Sonata suddenly lost power--it's still just as powerful as the day you bought it. What you won is an extended warranty from Hyundai. If that's not good enough, you can always call your lawyer.

I just love valet parking my GT. The lot attendants always ask lots of questions about it and are very impressed. I live in Seattle and the roads are just crawling (pun intended - 3rd worst traffic in the nation) with BMW, Mercedes, and Lexus and all manner of high end SUV. To impress those guys in this market is really saying something.

From reading a number of message boards and news sources, I've compiled the following list for recent Hyundai engines supplied in U.S. markets. I can't substantiate the accuracy of this info, as I haven't been able to find any concrete info from HMA itself (even though their Horsepower Ratings FAQS states "...the ratings we've announced are accurate for those models.").

    2.0L I-4 (140 hp) 135 hp
    2.4L I-4 (149 hp) 138 hp
    2.5L V-6 (170 hp) 163 hp
    2.7L V-6 (181 hp) 170 hp

Of the engines noted, it seems that all but the 2.0L (all late-model Elantras and most Tiburons) are eligible for the enhancements listed in HMA's recent press release.

Obviously, these are just numbers. If you've heretofore been happy with your model's performance, nothing's really changed.
  • bartbikerwbartbikerw Member Posts: 36
I think, that if the company is giving extended warranties for all the more expensive cars (i.e. sonata), elantra should get it too. After all they false advertised and not us. I know that I still have the same horsepower that I had when I bought the car, but it is their responsibility to couble check their numbers. We should get some voting going on and send it to hyundai.
  • goby2000goby2000 Member Posts: 9
I will definately be contacting Hyundai. I am still very satisfied with the car, but if they are compensating the other models why not the Elantras. All the specs on literature/website have been changed to 135HP.

    Hi:

Does anyone know where I can find a full size (not the lip) 2002 Elantra GT rear spoiler and how much the approx. cost might be.

For music lovers, I have installed the Blaupunkt Tampa Bay CD51 receiver and Blaupunkt IDC-A09 IN DASH 5-CD changer. They fit nicely and colors perfectly coordinate with the interior and purple dash. The units plus installation was around $400 and is worth it. Might post some picture soon.
  • markj11markj11 Member Posts: 6
I asked my local dealer about the puttingGLS spoiler on the GT and they said that it may be too heavy causing the hatch to not stay open. I'm not sure if this is true, anybody else hear about this??
Also, some poeple have put celica spoilers on the GT, maybe input from them would help out.
I like the celica and gls spoiler instead of the small strip for the GT
    markj
  • jeffhall76jeffhall76 Member Posts: 52
The Celica rear spoiler I bought is super light and does not affect the shutting of the hatch or prevent it from staying open.

Anything would be better than the BORING lip spoiler Hyundai is offering.
  • jmaterojmatero Member Posts: 253
That "boring" spoiler is an exact copy of the Saab 9-3's rear lip spoiler.... simple, discreet and black. The car was designed to look like the 9-3 and next time you see the Saab, watch out for the spoiler.... to me it makes the GT look even MORE like a mini saab.

was not the only reason we bought the the car but it was a major contributing factor in comparing to the other brands.
  • nippononlynippononly Member Posts: 12,555
The group of cars out there right now selling at between 125 and 140 horsepower is so large, all with about the same curb weight (say, 2600-2800 pounds), that none would really beat any of the others by any significant margin, I would think, in performance comparisons. I mean, a couple of tenths of a second here or there is pretty much meaningless in the real world.

I always thought the main appeal of all the cars in this class was price, cheapness to operate (insure, gas up, etc), and great warranties (in the case Of Hyundai and Kia)...

2014 Mini Cooper (stick shift of course), 2016 Camry hybrid, 2009 Outback Sport 5-spd (keeping the stick alive)

  • johhujohhu Member Posts: 17
Agree 100% with blackandblue. And above all,ALL the errors across so many models in the 10 year period are pointing to the same direction.
for the elentras and tibs,140 was a number that was about 10-20 higher than many models in this group, and the 10-20 more horses was an important factor on people's check list when the final choices were made, even more important 2-3 years ago than now.Check the old posts 2-3 years back and you will see my point.I believe hyundai will lose customers because of this.It may not be because of the inflated horses,it's the pattern, and people will start wondering 'what else ?'.
  • lokannalokanna Member Posts: 22
I have to agree with the above sentiment. While I still feel my car has enough power and serves my purposes well, I still can't shake the fact that when I researched for decision for 6 months (my first new car :D) that above and beyond any other car in the price range for me, 140 was tops. That's a claim that helped sell the car to me, and now the claim is 135, which a lowly chevy sport cavalier can muster (please don't think I'm comparing, just throwing a car that I remember had that much hp). 135hp or 140, I still love my Elantra, but I truely believe Hyundai should extend their "courtesy" to us Elantra owners as well, as we've been wronged just like the other vehicles.

    Just my .02 cents
