well i just went to that site and read up on it, and checked out the pics. IMHO it's nowhere near the 300m. i dont like it. at all. but, to each his own right? perhaps it's the car for ya...
i have to say, you said "but I was wondering what you other near-luxury riders, like myself, thought of the Alti." well, im not a near luxury rider, im a VERY luxury rider. and this is the best for your buck. and IMHO, stress on the "IMHO" the altima just wants to be luxury..
The new Alt. is a fine vehicle, but if you like large interiors and lux then the 300M is better. The Alt. is great for off the line performance, but like the 300M for taking the back roads. A better comparison is the I30 and Max, models.
Still in "sunny" FL!!! First access to internet since I got here July 27th. Been on FL Tpk. a few times when we went to Pembroke Pines and Pompano Beach(Houston's Rest. on Atlantic). Kept looking for both of you, but no luck! I ended up with a Red Ford Escape SUV instead of a puddle jumper Hyundai Elantra that I was supposed to get. Not bad for an SUV- very noisy though especially on Lake Worth Rd. between Jog and the FL Tpk entrance! Good place to test your car for road noise. If it's quiet here, it will be quiet anywhere. When I first heard that roar, I checked out the tires- GOODYEAR!! LOL....
I'll be in FL for another week, so I'll keep looking for you if I'm down that way! There are 475 new messages for me to read here. By the time I get back to CT, there'll probably be a 1,000! ;-))
Yup, I was kinda surprised by the prices I saw too. The 2002 should top out at 33k or a little over. Base price on that base 300 I saw was like 28.3 + dest for the 28995. I think they are making room for the special to come in at 35k.
I didn't take that close of a look at the wheels on the limited but will next time I'm at the dealer.
So I have a few requests, #1, Please keep the posting to under 50 a day (so I can catch up when I return). #2, All you 300M'ers in the west, please go to the Monterey get together, I would love to see as many as possible. #3, be careful, I do not want to read about another M being in a accident, while I am gone. As soon as they are done retouching my wing and spoilers I will be gone. Can't wait to see some of you.
fastdriver - you gotta come down to Weston or to Miami to find me nowadays. Actually since you went to Pembroke Pines, you were a bit south of Weston (next town south basically)
bluesky999 - I like the new Altima. It is supposed to be larger than the Maxima, so it is probably close in size to the 300M. Overall it also looks like 300M. Avalanche might even be able to swipe the taillights from it and graft them onto his M (check them out Avalanche) It also has stick (not my cup of tea), with the stick it does 0-60 in 6.3 seconds (not bad at all). HID lights are available.
I might have to get this Altima since 300M is a bit too expensive for me now (damn Florida salaries are so low, but cost of living is not necessarily lower than NYC)
Thank you kind sir for the big red compliment. As for the altima..I'm not a huge fan of its design, but those Nissans have always had some kick butt engines in them. Might be fun to try.
Does anyone want to hazard a guess as to the worth of adding a separate cone-like air filter to the engine breather hose (which now connects to the plenum), assuming the filter was in the air box separate from the main air filter?
can come in a 6 speed, already i like it better than my 300. sry i just hate these slush boxes fellas. even with the autostick...*cough--stick shift for wussies--*cough. when it comes to interior room and comfot, no competeion, we got it down, but, 6spd.
yeh, go buy the Altima--and then you can join the Nissan Altima Enthusiast Club--NOT---as I doubt the Altima owners are as enthusiastic about their ride as 300M owners---from what I read from some of the posters on the Altima board, the Altima is a real rattle box--cheap interior, loose fit---but I never test drove one so I cannot give a firsthand opinion---
Now the 2002 Acura TL S model sounds interesting---saw an article in one of the car magazines---0-60 in like 6.7 seconds--quarter mile under 15 seconds---and improved exterior, seats, and supsension. And a 260 hp engine with a 5 speed automatic with manual mode and dual exhaust. Bottom line about 33k.
shows how enthusiastic M owner's are over their ride---when's the last time you heard someone point to an Altima and say "Wow"---my M on the other hand receives compliments almost every day.
Ummmmmmm ..... I'm just posting a message to try and keep PHASES78 company. I hope this message keeps him from slipping into a severe state of depression because no one is posting today.
Saw a 99 or 2000 black M today with no front plate. I looked at the rear, and it had a TX plate. Somebody just thought it would look nicer without a front plate (and it does). I need to carry those club cards in my car cause I see more M's every day.
that is the dyno test result from dean. he's got all the timing slips. you gotta talk'to'em and he'll fax them to you . STOCK 300m-----> 6.4sec 0-60, that is pretty damn fast. theres a kid named kyle with them to on yahoo, he gets better than that the gears, and his exhaust + intake.
This is a 3600 lb. highway cruiser with a smallish engine and the big power loss in the transmission. Without "lower" (higher numerical) final drive gearing it just struggles. I think it is enough for my around town driving, but I feel the same frustration when entering the freeway and second gear slowly winds up. Chrysler claims they tuned this engine to feel like the V-8 muscle cars of the 60's. Ha! Still, it is a great road car, with comfort and good power between 70 and 90 mph if you need it.
thats a good question, i'm gonna give him a call this week and check it out. i imagine anything is better than out poor stock time, ouch i think i can run a quarter mile faster
the only thing i see here is that at highway speeds, the rpm's are gonna be a little high, not a problem for me, or anyone with with a good exhaust, but might be for stock 300's. i dont know just my thinking...
dean said that its like cruisnig in 3rd gear. the car will be in 4th, but the rpm's will be like they were in 3rd before the gears.. get it?
300M sure does not merge like my Grand Prix GTP did (240HP, 280lbs-ft torque), however I can't really complain about lack of acceleration. I regularly run away from the pack when merging in my 300M. I use Autostick a lot.
Silver Bullet4--yep, there is no substitute for cubic inches, BUT... My biggest disappointment in my new 300M is how sluggish it is once it hits second gear. Yes the car weighs 3600 pounds, but having owned several 3400 pound GM cars with 3.8 L engines that had 50 hp less, I can go from experience in saying that when they hit second gear, they did so effortlessly making merging and passing much easier than in my much more powerful M. (200 pounds less and 50+ hp less) I kinda wonder if its not so much the engine as it is the poor gearing of the transmission. Even my 3.5L Concorde with 50 less hp had a better second gear.
hey guys i know some surgeons maybe we can transplant another gear in therE? huh huh huh?
ok if we can't do that, what are the alternatives for getting rid of that fugly trait of the 300? dean's gears, thats one i guess. intake, exhaust didn't really help so i'm thinking has to be under the hood. what about switching computer chips? not the whole ecu, but like i know the gears comes with some electronic adapter, and there are a few companies who make the adapters to fit 42LE transmissions, which will fit the 300m. i'm going on theory here but that would change the shift points and all that, i dont know how stock gears wuold hold but i think it would do it.
dean has one, and tony has another one he got from a 3rd party. its called an Electronic Ratio Adapter.....
hmmmmmm....
herm u bum, u can just fly by these posts, it doesnt even matter to u, lol. i'm not gonna be going fast with my 20's either, but i always like to have this power under my belt. u never know when those civics need a whopping.
Thanks everyone for your comments on the Alti. Like our president, I'll take all viewpoints into consideration before making final decision. Realize, the alti coming out in September is bigger than the current Maxima in terms of interior space, wheelbase, headroom, power, etc. I wouldn't mention the current alti on this board.
I once had a 4 cylinder Grand Am that was a lot of fun to drive because it was lightweight and tossable, and compact. That's the reason I'm seriously considering the Alti, which although very roomy, has aluminum hood, trunk, and suspension parts to make it lightweight. Plus it looks a lot better than a camcord. The 300M is awesome, but it's not as quiet as I'd like, and its fuel economy isn't that great, and it's a bigger car than I need. I just hope I would get used to the Altis ugly interior, and I'll have to test it for noise levels. The Acura TL is too conservative for me.
Saw an '01 M in todays paper (New Jersey) going for about 25,300, after rebate and dealer discount. Have a good week all.
sounds cool, post up pics of whatever car you get, i personally like those altimas, we're going car shopping all this week for my sis, first one on the list of the speical anniversary maxima, gonna see how that is tommorow. oh about the gas mileage on the 300 tho, 36mpg 9 hours driving. 500+ miles on one tank of gas, not thats good if u ask me. and i got some heavy weights in there (stereo). just thought i'd point that out...even in the city i get in 20's easy.
Being that the Prowler Pro gears cut a second and a half off the 0-60 times it would be conservitive to say that it would put a stock 300M in the 14.2 to 14.3 times. For those of us that are already getting around the 7 second 0-60 times it should move us into the 13.8 to 13.9 times
For anyone still on the fence about going to the Detroit Dream Cruise Aug. 17-19, be advised the "hold" on the hotel rooms expires tomorrow, Tuesday Aug. 7th. There were 1.5 million people at the cruise last year, so rooms may be hard to find if you wait any longer. 300M club rate at the Hampton Inn, Dearborn MI, is $89.00/nite. Phone 313-436-9600.
but there is significant acceleration in 3rd gear with this, AFTER 60. so wouldn't that have to come in to play too? i wonder what we top at when doing quarter mile, i think stock was like 90 some mph, with the gears i bet it would put you over a hundred. i cant' wait till the g-tech comes in, i'm always going 100+ here and there, i can test it out...
happy monday for some, crappy monday for others... i leave in a couple minutes for the field, AGAIN. but at least this time its only a couple days. next monday is the one im dredding.. another two weeks out there.........
Comments
never even considered anything else....
ill look into the altima and give u my honest opinion.. give me a couple minutes..
thanks though!
Fingers are too fast sometimes.
