Well, nobody on this site is timid about expressing their music preferences! With an 11 year old son and a 16 year old daughter I get plenty of the newer "music" on the car radio. I let them each have two presets and they can listen to anything they want while riding with me, with the exception of rap. My daughter has downloaded about 45 CD-R worth of stuff and forced me to buy a second large hard drive just to store her "long term evaluation" material. Around town I usually listen to KTCK The Ticket Sports Radio. They are currently disgracing themselves in New Orleans (Super Bowl coverage). They can be pretty sophomoric but cover the sports scene pretty well. Our classical FM station, owned by the City of Dallas, was the first radio station in Texas.
I just found my old "Best of ZZ Top" tape. Gotta try it out. It will be the first time I have used the cassette in the M.

Since day 1 I have complained about a vibration in the steering on my 2000 300M. At 7500 miles the tires were rotated (front to rear) and the vibration went away. Now the tires have been rotated again at 21K (rear to front) and balanced via the Hunter GPS 9700 and the vibration is back between 40 and 60 MPH. The tech noted that the wheels seem to be out of balance based on the weights required. I am going to the dealer Monday.. Any advice out there?? Is it the tires?? Wheels?? Will this be a battle with the dealer??

I'm UConn class of '82, so I guess I just missed sharing the joys of Storrs at the same time as your wife. I spent many a dry night in Wilton, grew up in Westport. Nice neighborhood.

IMHO, if your CD collection does not contain The Who's "Who's Next," it ain't much of a collection! As I'm sure you all know, The Who were the highlight of the Concert for New York. Pop "Who's Next" into your 300's CD player and turn up the volume for Baba O'Reilly and ROCK!

I don't have "Who's Next", but I do have the double album (vinyl)of "Tommy" by the Who. I can still remember sailing in a race between Molokai and Oahu on a beautiful day in paradise listening to "Dark Side of the Moon". Pretty enduring stuff, like Moody Blues "Days of Future Past". I went for a drive and played my long lost ZZ Top. There's some good blues and hard driving Rock for ya'. I like the Doors for a rainy day (Riders of the Storm).

I had a similar problem on my 2000 300M. I had a set of the Goodyears. After about 3500 miles I noticed a vibration at certain speeds. I had the tires checked and rotated. The vibration happened again. I also had unusual tire wear. The dealer re-aligned the car twice and the problem still persisted. After complaints to the dealer, they told me to go to Goodyear and have the tires checked. Naturally Goodyear found nothing wrong with the tires.

I bought an entire set of Yokohama Avid's and had no problems initially. I had the tires mounted at a Mr. Tire with a Hunter balancing machine. One time at the dealer I had them rotated again and the problem came back. I think my current problem is with the dealer and the technicians.

I am going this weekend to have the Mr. Tire look at the tires and see if they can determine what the problem is. I may have a bad rim or the tires may not be lugged with an equal amount of torque. This can cause the tire to wobble ever so slightly and cause enough vibration to be noticed.

I am going to have the Mr. Tire loosen the lugs and re-tighten them with the same amount of torque across all the lugs to see if that solves the problem.

Didn't know the M had a cassette until I read you post. Went out to Beast and took a look and sure enough I've got one too! I also didn't know that the rear seats would fold down until a couple of weeks ago. Does anyone now how to say, "Read the Manual"
Now if I could only find out where the eight track player is located in the M I could be playing all kinds of good 60"s stuff :)

I gotta agree with you there. Country does not do anything for me either. Except for maybe Willie Nelson cause as a young boy I unfortunatley happened to see my now departed grannies naked butt as she bent over in the bathroom. Now every time I see Willies face it reminds me of her. Brings a tear to my eyes.

Uxca - Here is a picture of the wood trim piece that you sent me up against my luxury group trim. You can see the color difference, with the trim piece being "redder" in tint. Now I don't know what to do. I certainly don't want to have this much of a difference with the pieces up against each other. I guess I could send it back if it didn't match, though. Hmm. Thanks again for the piece. It's helped me a lot.

That picture certainly does show a difference in colour so I went out and took a look at mine again. It's really hard to see a difference on the small parts as they are so far away from the dash. Perhaps they used a different grain of wood for the parts remote from the dash. Again if you look at my pictures on yahoo there is an excellent match with the radio/console trim and looking at your picture of the existing trim and mine they seem to be identical matches.
So go ahead and spend the the rest of your E-Bay money and do it.
How long before your wife figures our that you got $300.00 from E-Bay and have now spent around a $1000.00 dollars of it so far on your K&N
    and dash kit
Sorry about the Wilie Nelson thing but I feel so much better now that
    I've shared it.:-)

Your 8 track is in the trunk, right next to the spare steering wheel!!! LOL. I have been having a ball running my cassettes through the system, Abba, Fletwood Mac (Rumours) Supertramp, Moody Blues etc.

One of my favourite artists is Chris de Berg, and if some of you have not heard him, try and check him out. He may be on mp3.com. One of his earlier cassettes was Crusader and it is wicked if you like this type of music in my opinion.

sdmike- I do not have a problem with the colour match on my woodtrim on the center console but it does appear to be darker on some of the smaller pieces but not enough to cause me to remove the pieces. I did take some pictures and I will attempt to scan them and I will try to e-mail them to you, if my scanner is working right.

The weather has turned milder here and the roads are a mess along with the car. I saw a parked 2000 M Inferno Red with sandstone interior and I waited for the owner with no luck. The windshild had a nice crack from one side to the other. Did not have the wood steering wheel. Is that a 01 add on?
  • uxca300muxca300m Member Posts: 155
This is great. Thanks for the help. Went out to Beast and took up the mat in the trunk and found the spare steering wheel. It doesn't look the same as the O.E.M wheel in that it has a chrome centre and is black around the outside. It also looks a little bigger. Still can't find the eight track though. Will look again tomorrow when it's light out.
Excuse me for a sec.," Oh honey, do you know where the cap for this glue is"

Can you tell if your smaller trim pieces are different than the radio console? Maybe they're less critical in the QC department for those items.

Special thanks to Glenn for helping me with the aircharger install. It's a pretty simple process, made easier by the fact that Glenn has done it already. It would have taken about 30 minutes if it wasn't for our BS'ing for about an hour extra. lol. Oh, and that "special tool" didn't work. It was a flat screwdriver thingy that was supposed to help get at difficult access screws, like the throttle body clamp. It didn't work because of the angle. Now GLENN has the tool...a screwdriver thingy with a universal joint and a bendy arm. Worked better with two people...one to hold the head in the screw slot and the other to turn it. :)

It might just be my wishful thinking, but I think Big Red is a bit throatier and faster as a result of the transplant. Glennbp and I are talking about dynoing our cars (or one of them, because they're set up the same) to see how much of a difference the dual exhaust, aircharger and Bosch plugs makes over stock.

    Thanks again, Glenn.

Okay guys, the weekend is here and I want to see if I can track down just what it is that's making such a loud racket behind the stupid gauges myslef.

So, Otto or anyone else, how do you get in there? I know that there are 2 visible screws on the top underside of the front plastic piece that forms the guage surround, so is that where to start? I don't necessarily want to remove the gauges entirely (mother dearest would probably ring my neck if she saw that in my hands!!) but I want to be able to see in and around the area with a small flashlight or something. It may be a wire, a screw, a broken piece, or just something that vibrates behind there.

I don't want a full disassemble, but I'd like to see in around there. Kind of a slightly evasive surgery.

    Any help?

First the clips that hold the trunk and the hood mats are different. The hood ones for the most part are not reusable. I may try to use the trunk type clips on the hood mat to see if they work there, the heat factor is my only concern. The trunk and most of the others in the car are reusable (several times over (Mine has been out at least 9 times, useing the same fasteners). I made a tool shaped like a spoon with a groove cut down the top center (about a quarter inch wide).
The shifter is very easy to install. All you need is a torx bit. You will have to move the shifter in to gear Drive or auto stick is the best to give you the most room to get at the screw. When putting the your new chrome one just slide the shifter knob down and verify that the release button works (there is usually a little play in the button). Tighten down the torx screw and you are in business. Just don't over tighten the screw.
  • bobhex40bobhex40 Member Posts: 63
I tried the re-torque approach with no success. I'll try with the dealer Monday. Again the problem occured with the rotation. So its either tires or the wheels. If I have no luck with them I will try swapping each front tire with the spare which has not been used. If the problem goes away I will know what tire/wheel is causing the problem and go from there. Now if I can only get the loose drivers seat fixed!. Tried the TSB approach and the seat is still loose. Hope to get a new power seat unit.

To get at the instrument cluster, you need to do a few things.
1st, make sure you are by yourself (seeing ones car in pieces can make some people very upset :), or better yet get their permission to do it.
1.5st, disconnect the negative battery cable. I usually do not do this myself, but mention it for safty reasons.
2nd, remove the fuse box cover on the drivers side (it just snaps out).
3rd, using a phillips screw driver remove the screws holding the lower padded panel. (there are 2 screws under the fuse cover area).
4th, the panel will now pull (snap) off. There are four friction clip holding it in 3 on the far right and one on the left.
Using a socket set (metric) taking off the 4 bolts you can remove the steel plate underneth the steering column.

This should give you enough (poking around) room, and is much easier then removing the cluster area.
    Some words of advise.
One do not over tighten the 4 bolts holding the mtal plate (especially the uper right one) they strip fairly easly.
Have some foam handy, to wrap compoinets with (1/8 to 1/4" works well. If you remove the center radio bezal it is the same as used to wrap the A/C contol wires.
You can use a hammer handle or something that has a rubber end to tap the frame and supports. The rubber won't make much sound and will not do any damage to the car parts. Also move the wires a little to see if they make any noises and if so wrap the foam around them or secure them with plastic ties.
If you have some aquarium tubing you can make a stethoscope to help isolate some of the sounds.
    Hope this helps.
If you still need to remove the cluster area let me know.

Not bad Mike . You know your way around and under the M, I see.
Beach , once you have the lower knee bolster pad and metal plate off you should be able to see a screw near the headlamp switch ,remove that . There should also be another screw on the other side near the radio. remove that . Then the two screws that you can see on top of the gauge area. now if you really want to get deep into this remove the steering column shroud cover , there are two screws on the bottom and the top snaps on to the bottom half ,just be careful the clips break easy. Once you have the shroud off you can pull the trim that covers the gauges off. Now there are only two screws that hold the gauges in place .Remove them and pull the whole gauge cluster towards you , it may take some pulling as you have to disengage the cluster from the electronic connectors and upper clips on the back of the unit. Then you should be able to get a better view around there. .One place I would look is between the steering column itself and the metal plate it is bolted to. Take a flash light and peer between (you will see a small gap) it , there you will see one screw this what we call a cross-car beam screw. This screw goes through a hole in the metal plate that the steering column is bolted to and goes into a metal clip on the under side of the plastic instrument panel . This screw is to stop the plastic instrument panel from rattling, well if this screw comes loose or the clip breaks away from the plastic instrument panel you will have one hell of a rattle . The screw actually pulls the dash tight against the metal mounting bracket ,so poke a screwdriver in and make sure the screw does not move or rattle. If it is loose you have to drop the steering column unit to get at it. This is also easy , it is held up with two 10 mm nuts and two 10 mm bolts . Hope this helps you. Let us know what you find

Does it make sense that the 2001 TB is different than the 2000, and that they would cost so much less?

As I walked up to my car I noticed that my brake lights were on, including the center light. I backed the car up a bit and parked, and the lights remained on. My mats weren't in the way, but after I pumped the brakes a few times, it seemed to start working again. Very annoying.

Not sure how this works on a PC, but on a Macintosh, ANY picture that I have on my HD, I can use as "wallpaper". I have had Christine there and my current car. BigRedM would be great as a screensaver! I did have BigRedM on my screen at one time too. I'm sure you know what pic. ;-)) Right now, I have John Edward there- Crossing Over TV show. Trying to get tickets to his show to see what this is all about up close and personal.

Anyone here have pictures posted of how to R&R the headlamps?

The "new" procedure as outlined in the owners manual doesn't work. It states that you must remove the "sight shield". In other words, remove the lens cover from the headlamp assemply. It is held on with spring clips AND a liquid sealer material. In short, those covers AREN'T coming off without screwing up the seal.

So the only valid method is loosening the facia. I've looked at the service manual and id'ed the plug to remove but the diagram isn't very clear as to where the nuts are that need to be loosened. As the saying goes one picture is worth a 1000 words.
  • ottowrkrottowrkr Member Posts: 778
Yikes, the headlamp lens are not removable !!. To remove the lamps from the car you have to loosen up the front fascia ,a bunch of plastic push pins, screws and two nuts . The two nuts are assessable from inside the wheel well. You will see a somewhat round plastic plug that is on the plastic inner wheel liner shield .Now you need a long extension with a an 11 mm socket to reach into the hole and loosen the nut on either side of the car up near the front ,close to the headlamp . If you can look in the hole of the wheelwell you can see the nut at the other end. make sure you have a socket with a magnet on it ,you don't wont to drop that nut. take all the plugs ,screws out and the fascia should pull away from the body giving you room to lift the headlamps out.Hey Kosh ,quit tearing that Special apart !!!!
  • scotianscotian Member Posts: 1,064
    I haven't heard of a "sight shield".

To remove the fascia, in each wheel well there is a screw pointing upwards to remove (I can't remember what size) and an oval grommet/plug to remove.

Slide a *long* 10mm (if I recall correctly) socket on a long socket extension straight through the oval hole through the fender and towards a nut at the body seam between the metal and plastic fascia. With a flashlight you can just see the nut through an opening behind the headlight looking down through the open hood (this is much easier than looking through the oval hole).

The rest of the things holding it on are plastic trim rivets.

I've done this twice, and it's not too hard.
  • 300michael300michael Member Posts: 1,815
I can attest to what Otto is saying, I am currently trying different solvents to be able to remove the lens from the headlamps. Don't worry I am using a spare Concorde head lamp to do this.
To be clear, the R & R is remove and replace?
  • 300michael300michael Member Posts: 1,815
PCs work the same way. I too have a picture of My M as wall paper. It saved me from going out and checking it every minute to make sure it was OK when I first purchased it :) And like you and SDmike I wanted it to be the color of my M. My wall paper kind of morphs, with all the exterior mods I have done, form stock to current edition.

Yes I have taken this car apart quite a few times. To in stall remote starts, stereos, DVDs and too many other accessores to mention. Although not nearly as many as you have done. I am a "Mike of all trades and a master of none". It is my nature to take things apart, to see how that work (and improve if nessary). I have been doing it since I was 7 (taking watches apart) and am too old to stop now. Just for the record the first watches didn't go back together :(.

I use various pictures, typically changing them once every week or so. It's usually a recent picture of the kids. Like michael said, it's real easy. Most graphics viewing programs (e.g. ACDsee) and browsers allow you to make anything you're looking at your background with the click of a button.

I've taken some pictures of my Aircharger and some of the parts that came out. If anyone needs to see anything specifically let me know. Otherwise I think they've been posted before. I may, however, post one that shows the location of the various attachment points for the aircharger just to show you guys how easy it is. I also noticed that of the three big intake parts that I removed, only one of them appears to have any kind of restrictions (ribbed plastic) in it. The piece that is re-used is completely smooth on the inside with no restrictions or bottlenecks.

Oh yeah! I found my engine block heater plug! LOL!

My new M is 2002 is Lt. Almond Pearl Metallic with the light interior. I got all the bells and whistles the Chrysler offered but would have loved to have had more options. Like airconditioned seats for I live in Phx AZ...and it gets pretty hot here. Thats why I got a light colored car. What does anyone know about window tinting for these cars? Is it advisable? I would also like to have a spoiler put on. Does anybody know anyone here in Phx that could help me with these things? p.s I used to really like listening to Willie Nelson..key words here are "used to"..have a whole new perspective
  • sdmike2sdmike2 Member Posts: 2,909
300michael, otherwise known as the "king of mods" lives in the Phoenix area. You might want to ask him about laws regarding tint and stuff. Personally, I have installed both window tinting and a spoiler on my '01 Inferno Red. The spoiler is a matter of preference, but I highly recommend the tint. I used Llumar 20% on the back window and rear side windows, and 50% on the front side windows (the percentages represent the amount of light allowed through). In California tinting your front side windows is illegal, but I think because you can still see through mine and it's clearly different than the rear tint I don't get any trouble. Remember, tint is only as good as the installer, so make sure you go to a good place with good references and a lifetime guarantee. As for the spoiler, I got mine pre-painted from http://www.california-dream.com. It was a little more expensive than from other places, but the quality is awesome.

Here is a picture of my tint. http://www.ritchiefamily.com/car/DSCF0518.JPG. I can post pictures of my spoiler install if you want to see it.
