Axiomlover: Nice Pics. Noticed that there was no cargo area tray in the back. Did it come with one? Once again, Best of luck!

xterrabill: Or should it be axiombill? My owners manual came in a plastic bag. Seems like it's really a dealer thing on how they present their stuff on delivery. As for the bug guard, I had one on my last truck, a 4Runner, and took it off after a few highway trips in the rain. It was causing my wipers to lift at any speed over 40. Since the axiom is more aerodynamic you might want to find out if anyone else has problems with theirs, does look sharp though. Its not too easy finding Axiom specific parts yet from any source other then Isuzu so good luck.

Here are two decent sites for OEM parts:

    http://www.partscheap.com/axioma.htm

    OR

    http://www.stcharlesauto.com/parts.html

Partscheap is generally cheaper but St. Charles ships direct from Isuzu warehouse, FedEx for free.

Bought my hitch from them, no problems.

You are right, the cargo tray and floor mats for some reason did not come with my vehicle, but it is listed on the sticker. My dealer has ordered those for me.
My manual also came in a plastic bag. I would prefer a leather or at least a vinyl pouch, but oh well.

I've been agonizing for three days about the purchase of a new Axiom. Really like the car. I've got the price I need, and at least through Monday, there is 5 years at 0% interest. Problem is nearest dealers are 2 hour drive. Best warranty in the business and Isuzu has no dealers! I hear the present shortage of dealers may get worse, as the company shuts out marginal producers. In view of the above, I'll have to pass. Stoney

Thanks for the replies. I bought a Green Xs. Nothing smells better than a new car with leather. I was at the dealer having the car detailed and had him put on the OEM bug guard. It was convenient. I'll see how long it last. Just went for a 2 hour ride on the Garden State parkway. This truck has so much more power then the Xterra, it felt great. Now I have to figure out how to change my Login to AxiomBill.

Yes, convenience counts plus if they screw it up you get to hollar at them instead of kicking yourself!. GSP driver huh?, I'll be on the lookout for you next time I'm passing thru. Since I still haven't seen ANY Axioms on the road yet the first green one HAS to be you! I'm in New York so if you happen to see an Anthracite Axiom checking you out... it could be me.

350 miles on the odometer and I haven't noticed any oil consumption that some of you mentioned several posts ago. I thought you guys might want to know that the owner's manual on page 8-17 under section "Oil level check" says: "Remember, your engine may use more oil when it is new." So I guess it is normal and expected to see some oil consumption. It probably takes some miles for the piston rings to sit in properly and ensure tight fitting in the cylinders. Do you know what brand and viscosity of oil do they put in the engine at the factory in case we needed to add it before the next scheduled change? Also, are you guys planning on following the normal maintenance schedule (every 7,500 miles) or severe duty (every 3,000)?

Guys we should have a get together with Isuzu people in NY/NJ area. I'm in Staten Island, and am in NJ often. Also we'd love to have you guys at a PB event! :)

Scoobyax, I'll be the Green Xs with the Bug Guard and Yankee Plates. Paisan, I moved down to Jersey from Brooklyn a couple of years ago. Played a lot of fast pitch in Staten Island. Yeah, count me in on your next get together. Axiomlover, I always change to mobil one (oil and filter) and change my oil every 3 - 4,000. It costs me more but I have never had any troubles in any car I've owned (knock on wood!!) Check out the new Login name!

The strange fuel readings we've all experienced are the subject of an NHTSA item: SB621346 dated March, 2001. I don't have the cash to throw to get the full report, so I don't know if there is a fix (firmware update by dealer?).

Speaking of which, there is another Axiom NHTSA bulletin about poor fit on the front door weatherstripping (mine is creeping like a mid-life waist-line on passenger door upper outside corner); item #SB621363.

The NHTSA is a US federal agency, "National Highway Traffic Safety Administration", with a searchable Web site at www.nhtsa.dot.gov

I checked my Troopa this past weekend. When the light came on I pumped as much gas as possible into it, turned out it took 18.5 gallons, which means that there was aproximately 3-4gallons left in the tank when the light came on.

What are you folks paying for a 2wd Axiom these days? 0% financing for 48/60 months sounds pretty good. My wife might be needing a car soon.
  • scoobyaxscoobyax Member Posts: 51
Talk about timing... wouldn't you know this past weekend I'm cleaning my Axiom and I notice that the weatherstripping on the front drivers side door is coming off. Was pretty obvious so it must have just happened. Well something to keep an eye on. Easy to pop back in though with small screwdriver.

I agree with Axiombill, I have always had the oil changed every 3-4,000 miles in all my cars or trucks. I also usually bring it to the dealer for convenience and the fact that there always seems to be something else that needs to be done. (ie loose weatherstripping!). FYI, you can change the default Service Distance on the MID from 7,500 to a setting between 2000-7500 miles in increments of 500 miles. Check out p 5-29 in owners manual.

3-4 gallons doesn't seem too bad to have as a reserve once the fuel light goes on and I wouldn't exactly trust the "miles to empty" since it often seems to reset itself.

I purchased a trailer hitch from St. Charles. I received it within 3 working days as promised. I was able to install the hitch by myself but I did have some difficulty. First I had to tie the hitch
to the frame on the passenger side using braided wire then do the same on the drivers side. I did this in order to line up the holes properly and started on the drivers side to get the hitch above the exhaust pipe. I then ran into my most severe problem. The first bolt I needed to install into a weld nut in the frame was behind two pieces of metal with holes for the bolt. Unfortunately, these holes did not line up properly. I could not thread the bolt into the weld nut without removing some metal with a file from the outside layer of metal. Everything went very smoothly after I was able to start the first bolt.

I also had some difficulty inserting the rubber plug on the wire harness.

I was able to save $100 by installing the trailer hitch myself.

Isuzu finally updated their website and they now mention the new gray interior choice on Axiom. They say that it comes gray in both leather and cloth upholstery. I am wondering what the gray cloth looks like?

Just wanted to give you an update on my Axiom. I now have 960 miles on the odometer and just came back from my first long trip (550 miles). I know that some of you were complaining about the front seats not being too comfy, but for my wife and I they are very comfortable. Perhaps it helps that I moved my seat back and so my position as a driver is more relaxed (I am 6' tall). I really noticed only two negative aspects of long trips in this vehicle: (1) my right leg (about a foot up from the ankle) was a bit sore from touching the extension of center console and (2) it seems that the rubber seals at both front doors are not very tight, which creates a draft that dries your eyes after some time at higher speeds. The A/C, radio and CD worked great and made the trip enjoyable. I found the headlights to be super bright and pointing correctly (I drove at night). Fuel economy was also satisfying at 20.1 mpg (my own calculation concurred with the MID readout) at speeds between 60 and 80 mph. I could probably average 23mpg if I did not exceed 60mph. However, I don't see how anyone could get 16 mpg in the city. No matter how light-footed I try to be, between traffic, lights and cold starts, my city average is only 12.8mpg. It isn't impressive, especially with gas prices going up. Actually, fuel economy measured on a 2.5 mile distance one way, twice a day for a week (two cold starts per day), at morning and evening heavy traffic, resulted in only 7.5 mpg. This is horrible measured on per mile basis, but I am going to check the fuel economy on time basis, meaning I will check how many gallon of fuel per hour of driving. I think it will give me a better comparison, since it may sometimes take as much as 30 minutes to go 2.5 miles due to heavy traffic or bad weather.
After the trip, I checked the oil level and it looks like the engine consumed some oil, perhaps 1/5 of the length of the dipstick between min. and max. marks. I guess this is normal and they warn you about it in the manual. I am noticing that the motor works smoother and quieter as it is breaking in, the idle is lower, more stable and throttle response is quicker. I love this car and think I will own it for a long time!
  • axiomloveraxiomlover Member Posts: 216
I noticed a strange noise after driving for a long time. It was coming from the rear axle (I think). It was a soft and repeating whooshing sound, like something was stuck to your tires. It wasn’t the tires, though. When the car cooled down overnight and I drove it the next day, I couldn’t hear that noise anymore. I thought it was weird, but I guess I am covered, if it was the axle, for the next 119,000 miles or 10 years. Let me know if you noticed any strange noises coming from the rear axle of your Axiom. Could it be the differential warming up after a long trip or not enough fluid to cool and lubricate? Any input would be appreciated.
  • dielectric7bbdielectric7bb Member Posts: 324
Your 7.5 mpg is bad, but that's due to the driving conditions. The car just can't warm up and in heavy traffic, you're just idling fuel away. The lowest I've gotten on my Trooper (ignoring off-road activity) was at about 11 IIRC, but that was with very very short trips (between one and three miles) for a total of about 50 miles. Engine starts, whether hot or cold, burn lots of fuel.
  • k2rmk2rm Member Posts: 205
    Axiomlover:

I have heard a similar intermitent noise in my Axiom, but it is only when driving in TOD at highway speeds. Were you in TOD at the time?

I have noticed that temperature has a huge affect on how much windnoise penetrates the cabin. The temperature has gotten warmer here in California and it sure seems like my Axiom is considerably more quiet. When it is warmer outside the weatherstrip probably expands to form a tighter seal and thus reduces wind noise. Temperature might play a role in your weatherstrip problem. Also with AC on, that will dry out the cabin.

I agree that the Axiom's headlights work great, but when I drive dark roads at night, people in cars are always flashing their lights at me as if I have my brights on. I don't even use my driving lights.

I now have over 3000 miles on my Axiom and my city mileage has improved substantially. Over the first 2000 miles it was below 13 mpg, but in the last 1000 miles I am getting 15 mpg. I am still averaging between 21 and 22 highway, very happy about that.
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
Just a heads up on TOD. It is very sensitive to tire pressures. Make sure your left<->right tire pressures are exactly the same @ cold temps. I usually bump mine up about 3-5psi from stock as well. The difference in pressure will cause the diameter of the tires to be different and will cause whinining etc. 1/4" in circumference is the max tolerable variance. I had one that was 3/4" different once and it drove me nutz tracking down the problem.

  • k2rmk2rm Member Posts: 205
Good advice, I will check the pressure before I leave work. Thanks
  • axiomloveraxiomlover Member Posts: 216
I am not too worried about the fuel economy just yet, as I am seeing slight improvement with each tank. Speaking of tanks, I just refuelled yesterday and the gauge was not even moving from the lowest point on the scale and the reserve light was on for the past 20 miles. I managed to put in only 17 gallons.
K2rm, the noise in the rear axle was audible in either 2WD or TOD (no difference). It does not seem to be normal, though. I am going to the dealership on Saturday to have this noise inspected, then I will let you guys know. Like many of you who posted messages here before, the tire pressure in my Axiom was way over the recommended level (42 psi vs. 26 as suggested by the mfcturer). I adjusted it the day after I bought the car and now it is at 26 in all four tires.
Perhaps we should all follow my friend's advice (he drives a Grand Cherokee): "If you start hearing strange noises, just turn your radio up, it will go away." I would like my Axiom to be perfect, though, and run with no strange noises or imperfections. I guess I am a dreamer.
  • scoobyaxscoobyax Member Posts: 51
Glad to hear the Axiom rides nice for a long trip, I haven't had the pleasure yet. Did you catch post #711 on the poor fit of the weatherstripping? I had the weatherstripping come loose midway up the side of the door but other than that my Axiom seems air tight with no noticeable drafts. Maybe it's just the ones with the gray interior? ;)
  • scoobyaxscoobyax Member Posts: 51
Just curious, anyone else following the manufacturers recommended setting of 26 psi for their tires? Mine were set to 40 by the dealer, which I then lowered to 30. Ride & handling seem fine. Thanks.
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
    Is way way too low.

    I recommend at least 30psi.

I run 40psi in my Trooper.

    -mike
  • drmpdrmp Member Posts: 187
The tires have recommended 26 PSI cold but further recommends increasing pressure depending on your routine speeds (example, above 60 mph, etc...).

Careful about overinflating the tires, maximum allowed tire pressure is posted on the tire's sidewall (ususally 36 PSI) and should only be used when it is loaded at recommended maximum load capacity.

Inflating tires to max capacity with no cargo will offer minimal gain in fuel effeciency at the expense of ride comfort. The tires will bounce like basketballs when hitting the slightest bumps.
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
I rather be over-inflated than under inflated and end up like an exploder. Most sidewalls max PSI is 40-45psi, at least the ones I've looked at lately. You are right, they will offer a harsher ride though.

The max pressure on my 265/75-16 BFG Allterrains is 65psi.

Today driving to work I finally saw another Axiom on the road. It was a white one and I only got a glimpse of it as we passed each other in oppostite directions around a curve. That's close to two months after I picked mine up.
  • axiomloveraxiomlover Member Posts: 216
Congratulations man on your sighting of another Axiom! It looks like Axioms show up at the same frequency as UFOs. I see a few more of them in the Chicago area, although still this is one of the most rare vehicles out there. I love the look on people's faces when they try to figure out what kind of vehicle I am driving. There are many, though, who wouldn't tell one brand of car from another and they don't care (not to be sexist or anything).

I replaced my oem filter, at 1800 miles, with a K&N drop in. I put them in all my cars. at $45 it is a good buy. never has to be replaced, just clean and oil. I have noticed an increase of 1-3 mpg in my other cars and noticed a slight increase on the axiom with the last refill, but one fill up won't tell you much. I always seem to notice an ever so slight "sucking" noise compared to the oem filter, possibly due to better airflow, possibly my imagination. throttle response might be a tad better. I recommend them. I got mine at www.performanceintl.com, one of the only sites I found that had one for the Axiom, although maybe the trooper would be the same part. anyone driven behind an axiom at night? I drove behind my wife and when she would hit the brakes, I noticed they are a funky red color. different than most brake lights I see. check it out and tell me if I'm losing my eyesight too.
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
I have the K&N in my Trooper. No milage change, no throttle change but 3000RPMs plus it does pull harder than before. Question on the cleaning of the K&N, I need to clean mine and bought the cleaning kit it is really gunked up with dirt and sand and stuff from off-roading, what is the best way to get all that stuff out?

    -mike
  • scoobyaxscoobyax Member Posts: 51
Here's the link for cleaning your K&N

    http://www.edmunds.com/ownership/howto/articles/43790/article.html

FYI, in Aftermarket & Accessories section there is a "K&N Air Filters, Bolt-On Power" board.

Opinion there seems mixed on the actual benefits of using the K&N. Makes me wonder, if they really are as good as claimed, how come manufacturers don't use something similar? Any of you Isuzu guys have any feedback on this. Thanks.

  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
I didn't notice and fuel savings, in fact it may burn more fuel. Also power was barely noticebale and only on the high end of the spectrum. Car manfucaturers make a lot of $ off filters a re-usable one would cut into their bread and butter.

Just purchased a canal blue 2WD with tan leather (not the ugly two-tone) in the central Texas area. Already over 100 miles and love the solid feel of the Axiom. Not used to the "stares" I get from other motorists, previous car was a Honda Accord. I have followed this board closely, and want to thank everyone for their honest and straightforward comments. I feel I got one of the best buys out there! I was able to get nearly $6000 of the MSRP, making the buying decision a no-brainer when you compare the other options in this vehicle category. I will update the board as I become more acquainted with my new "Blue Axe". Thanks!
  • hjerrodhjerrod Member Posts: 9
it might be burning more fuel because it's loaded with sand and rocks. otherwise, there would be no reason for it to decrease fuel mileage. it's not going to do anything spectacular for your car, I just think it's a lot better product than a paper filter.
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
In the beginning it did and should burn more fuel...

More flow of air = MAF will send more fuel in with the increased flow.

I bought my Axiom in Oct 01 and I just received my third vehicle survey from a marketing company. They all deal with my satisfaction with the Axiom, driving habits, etc...and have come from three different companies. That is the most surveys that I have ever received for any one vehicle. I wonder what Isuzu is up to?

Congrats! Good luck with your Axiom.
    Stares?!?! What stares! :)
  • axiomloveraxiomlover Member Posts: 216
Isn't it a great feeling to drive such an original vehicle that draws so much attention? How does it feel to drive an SUV after you have driven an Accord? How is your fuel economy?
  • axiomloveraxiomlover Member Posts: 216
If you recall message #718, which I posted some time last week, I was complaining about whooshing noise coming from the rear. I asked at Isuzu service about this noise and they told me it is from the tires, which are breaking in. I find it difficult to believe, since the front tires are completely smooth and quiet. I does seem to me that it is the tires that make the noise and not the trasfer case as I suspected previously. I can only hear the noise when the tires are warm - after a trip of at least 10 highway miles. It is unusual though and I did't see anyone else complain about it. I think I might experiment with the spare tire and see if there is a difference. Do you have any suggestions?
  • k2rmk2rm Member Posts: 205
I find it hard to believe as well that it could be the tires. I am afraid mechanics try to give the easiest answer to avoid doing the work or inspection. I would ask them, if tires need to break in, and they make this sound as they break in, why don't all new tires make this noise? Then ask to drive another Axiom to prove that this is normal.

My tires have never made any noise as you describe and I find it hard to believe tires need to warm up. It sounds more like a lubrication problem in the drive train. I could believe that if the drive train wasn't properly lubricated it could take a few miles for fluids to completely coat the gears as viscosity is related to temperature. After reading messages on many forums, it often seems like if someone thinks something is not normal, it usually turns out to be a problem no matter what the dealer says. Keep on them and good luck.

I just got it with 0% and price below invoice. Anyways, I love this car and the color. IMO, Gray and gray looks really good. I just notice few things that I dislike. No Gas tank lock, need more storage, truck ride(but love the sport mode), position of the homelink, gas milage.

I'm debating to put liscence plate in the front. I have to drill a whole to the bumper.....not good..
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
Nice colors, shoot some pics for http://isuzu-suvs.com for me and I'll replace the ASSender picture on the front page. :)

You shouldn't have to drill the front bumper, if your state requires a front plate your isuzu dealer should have installed a plate holder in the front IIRC.

  • cmunizcmuniz Member Posts: 604
I suggest that you both check the air pressure on the tires. Isuzu recommends 26 psi. I use 28 psi. When I got it from the dealer it had 36 psi and rode really harsh. The lower tire pressure makes a big difference. It might account for the tire noise also. It is still a truck and will have a harder ride than a sedan, though.
  • cmunizcmuniz Member Posts: 604
Paisan is correct. The Axiom comes with plastic mounting brackets that were in my glove compartment. Ask the dealer for them if you didn't get them. They are very easy to install and don't affect the visible part of the bumper.
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
Oh yeah I'd check the tire pressures. Also if it's only the rear, I'd have the dealer rotate the tires so that the noise should move to the front. Also the side to side pressure can cause the LSD to make noise if they aren't the same.

    -mike
  • axiomloveraxiomlover Member Posts: 216
Thank you all for your suggestions and answers regarding the rear noise I am experiencing. The longer I drive, the more I belive it is the transfer case and not the tires. My pressure was at 26, then I raised it to 36 (just to see the difference, but there was none) now I am back to 26. You know what, the car is 3 weeks old and I don't think anyone should be walking around wondering where the problem is. I am taking my Axiom in to Isuzu service dptmt on Saturday and I will let them figure out where the problem is. I will post the results.
  • axiombabyaxiombaby Member Posts: 11
I got one of that plastic thing for the front bumper, but installing that requires to drill into the bumper. It came with two drill type of screws.. I know for sure that I don't wanna drill a whole to my lovely bumper. BTW, I haven't check my tire pressure yet, but I'm sure it's high casue my ride is very hard...
Paisan! I took some pictures, I don't think it came out good but I'll take some more and e-mail it to ya~! Thanks for your help!
  • k2rmk2rm Member Posts: 205
Congrats on your Axiom. I saw an Anthracite XS just the other day (only the third I have seen other than mine), it looks very good. You should check if you need to display your front plate in your state.

In California, my dealer didn't install the holder and when I asked about it, they said they don't do it on vehicles that don't come from the factory standard with them since they want to leave it up to the consumers whether they want to have it installed, which they will do. They were also a GM dealership and sold cameros and corvettes which also don't come standard with a front holder and I guess some of their customers have gotten upset at them for drilling their bumpers and installing it.

I told them that I thought it was required by California state law to have it displayed and they said technically it was, but police don't hassle people about it. I was a little skeptical by this answer. I had the opportunity to talk to a police officer about the subject when he was taking a police report for vandalism done to my Axiom while I still had my temporary plates. He said technically, it is required, but Police these days don't worry about the front since so many cars aren't coming standard with the front, presumably since dealers aren't installing them. He said just keep the front plate in the vehicle if a police officer ever asks.

I have driven this way for 3 months now and haven't had any problems and I do notice many vehicles being driven without the front plate.

Maybe since your dealer didn't install it isn't required where you live.
  • axiombabyaxiombaby Member Posts: 11
Thank for your info. I live in OC, and I know that police don't really care about the front plate, however, in LA, I hear that they are strict on the plate. I guess they spent lots of money installing the intersection camera and give everyone a ticket. That was my only worry. Do you also have gray leather too? I got my becasue it was gray leather, my wife really didn't like tan(I also like tan). Anyways, I sent my axiom picture to Paisan, I guess he might update that to his web site..check it out. I think it was www.isuzu-suvs.com Thax
