I bought a used 2002 Axiom S with the Sunroof and 8,800 miles on it. Quite happy so far, only one problem. The dealer only had one key and one remote thingy. Now, do I have to go to Isuzu for it? or can I just go to an alarm/audio place and get one? Also how much are they?
    Thanks in andvance

Check ebay. They are on there all the time for 10-15 bucks. The Stealer will charge you +100.00 for one!
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
The BtoB is transferrable, the 10/120 is cut in half, but the 2002 Axiom only had a 7/70 Power train to begin with so you basically will have the 3/50K and 3.5/50K on the Powertrain.

    paisan...the 2002 model has a 10/120 on the power train...they switched to 7/75 with the 2003 models...so dgluth should get 4.5-5/60 on a used 2002, right?

It appears that Isuzu Motors finally realized how lack of advertisement affects their sales. Yesterday, for the first time, I saw commercial on Discovery channel advertising 2003 Isuzu Axiom - black beauty. I hope they are not too late because most automakers now advertise their 2004 models.
  • icedog97icedog97 Member Posts: 141
I saw that too...in fact it played a few times...

It's "Shark Week" on Discovery...not a bad time to advertise an SUV that looks the part...
  • sveltaxsveltax Member Posts: 72
The BtoB is 3yrs, and the road side assistance is 60 month. I don't have the mileage for the BtoB, I want to say more than 36K.

Went off roading this past weekend with some VehiCross trucks, those things are very off road worthy. My 2wd AX got high sided, without 4x4 dirt roads and mild off roading is fine. Anything more 4x4 is recommended. I'll post the pics when I get them.
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
Then the Powertrain is 1/2 the 10/120 so it'll be 5/60K and the BtoB is 3/50K so that will stay intact.

Yeah the VX is a SWB version of the Trooper so it benefits from the shortened wheelbase.

Went off roading last weekend along with 2 VXers.
The AX performed well on the dirt roads, I wouldn't call it a rock crawler. I did get high sided on the dirt mound, but it was my spotter's fault. I wanted to take one line and he put me on a different line, sure enough, I got high sided. Here is a pic of me descending the climb. Made it up ok, the gas tank skid plate works well.

That sort of looks like a Caprice cop car with a light bar following behind you there. Are you sure you weren't on a Dukes of Hazard shoot?

I like the winch on the one Vehicross. It looks like almost a stock position.
  • dielectric7bbdielectric7bb Member Posts: 324
    I agree with sbcooke.

That winch looks sweet tucked into the bumper like that.
  • sveltaxsveltax Member Posts: 72
The owner removed the front cladding and modified the front end to accept the winch. It is very cool, and works, had to use it on Saturday to pull the other VX out of a difficult situation. The yellow VX has air lockers and can crawl over just about anything, no joke! I was uncomfortable at first but after climbing a few rocks at 35 degrees, I got over it! I just got my hardcore rock sliders last night, hope to have them installed this weekend or next. These are functional rock sliders, not for decoration only, 50lbs per side.

Rockerbars. Yup my Indy 4x4 ones worked great when an intrepid slammed into me, it deflected the car back and only took on minor damage to the door of the trooper. :)

Thanks for all the helpful comments you all have posted. I have read them all (practically) during my research about the Axiom.

    Now, my dilemma -
Having decided to buy an Axiom, I found a local dealer who had 5 2002 Axioms XS models left on his lot. (yes, 2002 not 2003) One silver demo (5000k) miles and four blue ones with about 400 miles each. Full 10/120 warranty applies.

He's offering them at around $24,000, except the demo higher-mileage unit for $23,000. I initially offer quite a bit less for one of the blue ones, since I have seen things on here and elsewhere that make me think a 2002 can be had for mid $22,000. He refuses to counter offer at all, saying this is all his dealer cash on the table on these and he would rather auction them off than go any lower.

Boom, like that, end of negotiation. In fact, the sales manager walked off without so much as a handshake.

Am I nuts, or is he? Can he really expect to sell four blue 2002 Axioms at $24,000 each? Can he really auction them and do better than $22,000? This is my first new car negotiation, but I truly expected a counter offer to my initial offer (which of course was a bit less - say $1,000 - than I was willing to pay).

Look forward to your comments, and if anyone else got a steal, let me know how you did it!

Tell the dealer $20,000 ++ or maybe $22,000 OTD. Be firm and walk away. I think with a little hardball you should be able to get a better deal, they want to sell these cars and the cost of having them on the lot for 2 more years and then selling them for even less is a big one.

here's a link to http://www.isuzudealers.com/inventory/?SBstate=&SBmodel=Axiom- - - - &reset=InventoryListing&sortBy=internetprice check it out, your guy is charging what others are charging for 2003 models!

    Also do a Blue Book on a 2002, http://www.kbb.com/
use "private party value" that would be considered "high blue" In my zip code it's worth 20K. IMO you shouldn't pay more than high book.
  • ryanendresryanendres Member Posts: 122
    Head to:

    www.isuzudealers.com

There are a bunch of 2002 for 17-21k.

Also, I recent saw ads at some dealers for 10K off MSRP on 2002 Axioms.

Congrats on your decision to buy an Axiom. There is no way you should be paying $24K for basically a 2-year old car (you can buy '04s in many dealerships). I purchased my black '02 XS 4x4 for $25K with 9 miles on the odometer in March of '02, so I would expect to be able to get a leftover '02 now for about $19K, especially that they have 500 miles on them. Look elsewhere, and better yet, look in the used car market, where you can buy a low mileage Axiom for much much less than new (although you don't get the 120K mile warranty). Good luck!

Before you sign, one thing you may want to try is to see if the dealer will swap out, or give you a credit on the Goodyear Integrity's that come standard on the Axiom. They are THAT bad and if you read the previous posts you'll see others feel the same. It's worth a try. But if the dealer won't budge on the price and is that much of a jerk that he just walks away, do yourself a favor and find another dealer and let him keep his 02's. Don't get me wrong, I still love my ax, but as for a dealer with an attitude trying to sell a hard to sell model like he's doing you a favor? It's time to shop somewhere else.
  • tbonenshetbonenshe Member Posts: 2
Thanks for the confirmation that I wasn't just being a tightwad.

What about the new vs used comparison? In trying to ascertain the "fair price" I found it very difficult to find anything (even on Edmunds) for NEW 2002 models. It seems like comparing new to used is apples to oranges. Don't the warranty and other factors make a new untitled AX worth more than a second-hand one on the open market?

I am by no means anti-used car, BTW. If I get the Axiom, it will be the first new car I have ever owned. But still, in determining new car pricing, research on 2002's has been difficult.

Also, finding a 2002 XS instead of an S model for under 24,000 has been difficult, even after looking on isuzudealers.com They are out there but certainly getting very few and far between - and the dealer I mentioned in the previous post is the only one I have found in my metro area with 02 XS's left. Maybe its time for a road trip.

I bought my 2002 there at Sullivan Watts Mazda Isuzu on SR 200 in Ocala. They are good to work with and have 2002s and 2003s. You can call them at 352-620-9000 to see what they have in stock. I was just there today for an 18K check up.

They will work with you on price. I noticed they had $4000 off on one black Axiom, not sure what year model, and they also are offering 0% financing for 72 months, I noticed when in side the store.

They have a well-equipped service area too, open on Saturdays. Sales is open all weekend.

Just a tip, in case you are interested.
  • dgluthdgluth Member Posts: 50
But I already bought a 2002 Ax base w/sunroof and all the other bells and whistles except for the leather. I got it for about 18K with 8800 miles on it. The vehicle was a demo that never sold until they sold it at auction. The floor was still covered in the plastic from the factory. I am very happy with my Ax and buying a used car (the first one for me). The AX is really an under rated vehicle.

    Dennis P.

Also Tboneshe: I got the same act from the SM at the Isuzu dealer here in Tampa, what a jerk. The guy stated Isuzu did not have a sales problem. There are plenty of Isuzu dealers and plenty for sale used to put up with that junk. Good luck

I traded my 02 Axiom in for a 2004 Subaru Forester XT over the weekend. I always liked my blond grey Axiom, especially during winter driving. I had a lot of confidence in the TOD system. However, where I live the dealers are becoming fewer and fewer and the retail value of the brand is continuing to drop. I test drove the XT and really liked the total package for my needs even better than the Axiom. The turbo charged engine is awsome. Not only that, but there are dealers all around me just in case.

For those of you in the market for a new or used Axiom - hold the line on price. It is a buyers' market and I am sure that you will find a seller (dealer or private) that will give you a good price. If you are not paranoid about being able to get it serviced by a dealer like I am it is an excellent value and great car.

Thanks to all of you on this forum for all the info I've been able to get over the years on both tha Axiom and Trooper. Happy motoring!!

just got my 03 axiom last week.so far so good....except for the gas milage.my first tank was 11.6 mpg,and I was goin extra easy on the pedal.will this number improve as time goes on?....thanks
  • axiomloveraxiomlover Member Posts: 216
    Welcome to the Ax family!

It depends on where you drive your Axiom. Chances are that 11.6 was in heavy traffic and in the city. Quite frankly in "stop and go" you are going to get horrible mpg results no matter how easy you are on the gas pedal. Your average will improve with some highway driving where you can get up to 23 mpg if you don't go too fast.

There was a lot of talk at one point about Isuzu finally bringing direct injection engines to the States boosting the horsepower and gas mileage... That was supposed to happen during the 2004 model year, so has it happened? Some of you said 2004 Axioms started showing up at dealers. Do they have the same specs as 2003s?

Someone posted earlier that one way to correct the bouncy-bouncy-fun-fun-fun ride that you get in the Comfort mode of the Isuzu Axiom ISC is to unplug the Active Ride fuse. Some others ditto'd this as having worked for them, too.

I tried it and I think it is the cure-all, the panacea for the ISC sproingy ride problem. Here's what I did:

Drove the car a mile in Comfort mode. Parked the car without shutting off the engine and lifted the hood. The Active Ride fuse is in a small waterproof box on the LH fenderwall. I unplugged the 30 amp Active Ride fuse and replaced the WP snap-on cover and began driving again.

The new ride is just right. Kinda like Goldilocks and the 3 bear's beds. It is a medium comfort setting without all that extra PID gain that the ISC controller throughs in there unnecessarily.

By the way, that is the flaw. ISUZU engineers, where are you? Don't you read these postings? This system is fatally flawed and works better with the power deactivated. Why? Because the control loop has too much PID gain. It is overresponding to the inputs and creates a nearly dangerous ride.

As an illustration of this point, my wife refused to drive my Axiom in Comfort mode. She said it felt too weird. Now, she said she likes the way it drives. We drove across Florida to the beach on Sunday and back and the ride was wonderful.

Hey Ax lovers - you gotta try this.

And then, as someone else posted, we need to complain as a group to the NHTSA. They have a Web site with an online complaint form and if enough complaints appear on the same vehicle for the same problem, then they will look into it.

    All for now...
  • axiomloveraxiomlover Member Posts: 216
I took my fuse out a couple of months ago and thought the ride was worse - less controlled and way too soft. Some agreed some disagreed. Go figure.
  • sowrsowr Member Posts: 69
If you pull the fuse with the vehicle in comfort mode you get the ride from hell, way, way too spongy, very nasty, this indicates that the ISC works well to quell the comfort mode handling issues.

In sport with the fuse removed the ride is a little softer, and perhaps more predictable, however on the freeway it's a litte bumpy.

I ride with the fuse because I think that the ISC works quite well.

Can anyone say proportional, integral differential?
  • k2rmk2rm Member Posts: 205
I think the ISC works well also, as long as the road is not too bumpy. It makes sense as I see it. If driving on a smooth surface, I assume the ISC sets the shocks to a certain setting(depending on ride or comfort) ready for the next bump. When it encounters a single bump, it reacts well and the ride is quite good as the shocks dampen as expected. The problem is when the Axiom encounters another bump before the shocks reset to their ready position. The Axiom may either be in a too soft or too hard setting at the time of the next bump and therfore causes weird, unexpected vehicle dynamics. It is much more obvious in comfort since it can take several oscillations for the suspension to dampen on rough roads.

I am just not sure that a PID controller could work well enough for multiple perturbations to the system that a rough road gives. The computer just can't predict the next bump and be prepared for it. I think it would be better if the Axiom's ISC could recognize a rough road by realizing that the system is not dampening as expected by the PID calibration. If it could recognize this, then it could simply go into a intermediate setting depending on mode and wait for the system to stabilize itself. It could be that on a rough road the Axiom would remain in a static shock setting, but at least the computer would be fighting it.

But again, I don't think the ride is that bad and I usually drive in sport mode since the roads are so bad here. With a little more engineering it could actually be great all the time. I will be interested to see how Volvo pulls off their own ISC system in their new model.
  • cptsessocptsesso Member Posts: 116
I also don't have a problem with the ride. One thing I have noticed is with just me and 1 pax in the vehicle, the normal mode works just fine and sport mode is very firm.

With four adults in the vehicle, the normal mode is very soft and the sport mode feels much better.

I think the computer program does not take the differing weight factors into account very well. It is possible Isuzu engineers just used some arbitrary weight when program the ISC. Who knows.

    sorry about the delayed response.

I though I was having problems with my keyless door entry not working. The horn would blow but the door locks would not work. I first noticed it last winter when pre-warming the car outside. I lock the doors so someone doesn't steal it while it is running. The keyless entry did not work. If I hadn't had an extra key it would have been trouble. I was trying to trouble-shoot it at home with the car off since it worked sometimes. I leave the key in the ignition since it is in the garage. I removed the key by coincidence and figured out that the problem was there was a key in the ignition. If the key is there even with the engine off the keyless entry does not work. You could be out of luck if you have the key in the ignition and plan on getting back in with the keyless entry alone! It will not lock with the remote either but you can lock it with the door locks.

I finally tried to program the i-link for the garage door again. I dug out the manual and read it again. The first time I missed the step about pushing the button on the opener unit hanging from the garage ceiling. Once I did that it worked right away. I have a Craftsman opener a few years old with the rolling code that changes.

I started getting the seat rattling and squeaking from the rear seats with only 7300 miles. I had some thin metal tape with adhesieve on one side. I wrapped it around the seat hooks several times until it was snug with the seat latched. It takes up the excess space and also the thin metal forms itself to the shape of the latch for a tight fit. It shouldn't rip and get gummed up in the latch. The tape is similar to metal duct tape that actually has a thin metal layer instead of just cloth.
  • robert122robert122 Member Posts: 6
Thanks for the responce did you have the ignition in the on postion when you programed the opener I also have thr rolling code program.I also puttape on the back seat hooks it seems to help thanks.
  • axaholicaxaholic Member Posts: 8
The lights on the mirror don't come on with the key off so I was doing that right all along.
The step I missed was clicking the button on the opener unit hanging from the garage ceiling.
Once I did that it worked the first time.

Hi all, I've had my axiom since Dec 02. I've had it to the dealership 4 times so far to fix the ride being jittery (in comfort mode) at highway speeds. They have replaced the Axle, machined the rotors at least once, replaced the tires yesterday with Michelin's (at Isuzus expense) and the ride is a little better each time, but it is still not right. It shakes when you are at certain speeds on the highway, it shakes when you brake, and it shakes when you take your foot off the accelerator at highway speeds and coast. They are going to order new engine mounts and put them in next week. Any Suggestions? Thanks, Chris
  • sbcookesbcooke Member Posts: 2,297
If I were you I would ask for a replacement. If it is "real" enough (not that is isn't real, but that they aren't saying it's "normal") that an Isuzu dealer is willing to go to the effort they are to fix it, at some point I would ask to trade out of it for little or no cost to you.
  • sveltaxsveltax Member Posts: 72
I would hope that they balanced the wheels. If not have them check and get them balanced by an expert shop. They should also check that the actual wheels are not out of true. Have someone follow you on the freeway and inspect the wheel movement while at speed. You should be able to see an out of true wheel at 60-75mph.
  • sbcookesbcooke Member Posts: 2,297
That is a good idea...Even swapping to a entirely new set of wheels/tires at the dealership regardless of size (as long as they fit the lug pattern) and then going for a test ride would give you a good bit of data to narrow down issue. I would think a rodeo or trooper wheels would fit?

has anyone seen some pictures or info on '04 Axiom?

current owners: If you would have a choice of buying the Axiom again, would you do it?

I've been looking at this car since it was introduced. And the only thing that stops me from looking at it as a potential buy is the interior. Maybe the '04 will have a better looking inside trim. The current one just won't do it for me.

If I bought again it would definitely be an 04 Axiom XS 4x4. It gets a new Direct Injection engine with 250 bhp. I have an 02 Axiom XS 2wd and love it!

I would definitly buy another one. I would though get the XS due to the leather interior. My 2002 has the sunroof and all the other bells and whistles except for the leather interior. I bought mine used and it was such a great deal that I felt that the leather wasn't that important. Hind sight is always 20/20!

Has anyone attempted this mod to their fog lights so you don't have to have the headlights (or park lights for that matter) on to activate the fog lights?
  • fhossainfhossain Member Posts: 1
I purchased a 2002 Axiom used and is having a major vibration when the brakes are applied at speeds between 40 mph and above. Under warranty they have replaced and cut the rear drums twice, worked on the axle and replaced the front hubs and rotors, rotated and balance the tires and the problem is still exist. Isuzu has been reluctant to return my calls,I have filed for the Lemon Law.in addition the soft tuned suspension bottoms out. I will never buy another Isuzu the worst vehicle I have ever owned. I do not recommend this Axiom. It has taken the dealership and Isuzu 7 months to replace a simple defective door panel and still not right. The driver's information system does not read the gas mileage accurately and display freezes and they do not have a fix for it. The 270hp is extremely sluggish and noisy on accelleration, very very poor performance
all the way around. Comments anyone!!!!!
