    billengineer,
We are looking for the same truck and feel the way you do. I've driven my '88 Toy 4WD for 11 yrs and 215k mi virtually problem free. But all good things must end and now it needs attention. I would like to buy a new Silverado instead of repairing. It sounds like I would be repairing and worrying with a new Silverado. Undecided in So. CA.

I've an ext. cab, 4x4, 4.8, standard tranny, 4.10 rear end and have had no problems after 1,700 miles. It's a comfortable truck and fun to drive!

Hi I am steve and I work for a large Chevorlet Dealership in Mid West City Oklahoma,, I work on brakes and front ends... The problems with the new body style 99 pickups, vibrations at 65 mph, shutter in the front end at 65 mph, vibrations at 42 to 45 mph have all been addressed with validated repairs to most dealerships... For those of you who work for a dealership or are working thru a dealership to resolve these problems here are 3 valid repairs.... for the vibration at 65 mph the front hub and bearing assemblies have been updated old hub code is B8 and is lazer printed on the edge of the hub, should be replaced with a hub lazer printed B9 this will take care of the 65 mph vibration,, the problem with the old hub is it is not alowing the wheel to self center which give a vibration often miss diagonised as a tire... The second repair for shutter at 65 mph this the preload adjustment to the rack and pinion (steering gear) needs approximatly 5/8 turn to tighten, do not over tighten as this will cause very tight steering and no return of the steering wheel on turns.. this will take out most road walk, stop all shutter, and tighten the vehicles suspension ... third complaint is vibration or buzz at 42 to 45 mph crusing speed,,, the dealership has the only capable access to this repair, reprogram the computer with disc 12 and prompt tcc shift points. the change will be noticed by the rpm being higher at the same speed, changes tone vibration. this will also decrease fuel econmy by 1 to 2 tenths of a mile per gallon, but it gets rid of the droan noise.... Try these repairs and let me know, I have repaired 2 vehicle by doing all of these repairs and both customers stated its a hole new truck..... Steve Chevorlet Tech

I have a 91 chevy 2500 with a 700R trans. with overdrive. It sometimes dosen't shift into the next gear without shifting into nutreal and then pulling it back down into gear. It is intermitant, and sometimes works fine. I took the pan off one day and found a wire loose on some type of sensor, I reattached it and it works a little better. This sensor is round and in the front part of the trans. (looking from the bottom up). Does anyone know what this thing is and what it does? and what might be causing this trans. not to shift properly?

Any help would be appreciated. Please e-mail me at e54@pacbell.net
    Thanks.

    Billengineer,
I have the same truck you are looking at with the 5.3 engine. It too was built in Canada like Jimcarr's. I've had it now for 8 weeks and have had no problems described by anyone on this board. No pings, no squeeks, no rattles, no vibration. Relative to 4WD auto, works great. Used it a few times when the road was slippery after a rainstorm to test it out. Performed very well.

    I have a 99 GMC 5.3 with auotrack z71
Now with 2300 miles on it
Almost every option in the book, except for heated seats, but who needs that in Arizona???
Now Air conditioned seats would be nice...

I might have a pinging noise, but can only be heard in the morning, when it's cool, how ever cool is 80 in Tucson AZ
when it's 106 in the afternoon when I drive home there is no pinging I can hear.
I do have a few issue’s but none of them huge by any means

    1. Washerfluid light comes on even though it's full
    2. needs a small alignment pulls to the right
    3. Possible knocking

I have and apt on Friday
I asked them to check out the pinging issue, they said a tech would determine if it was a problem?? ok
I also requested to have the idle checked out because it vibrates on occasion when in park or drive, ect
They will also fix the alignment problem
Is there anything else I should request to be looked at?
    Thanks,
    Aaron

Thanks a lot. I'm still having the 65mph vibration
problem. The 40-45mph is gone with the flash mem
upgrade. I'll show your post to the dealer and
hopefully they will fix it for me.

    Thanks again,

I just purchased a 99 S-10. The "third" door to my extended cab won't open. The service dept. has had to order a part to repair it. I also have what they are calling an "air leak." It sounds like the air conditioner is on, even when everything is turned off. They tell me wind is getting in somehow and that they'll have their "body man" look at it and recommend what to do. I'm real disappointed so far in my "like a rock" Chevy. Has anyone else had any problems with their 99 S-10?

Anybody that likes GM products should
get the GM Credit Card. With no annual
fee, it rebates 5% of your charges up to
$500 per year. This can be rolled over
to accumulate $3500 over 7 years. The
rebate comes off After the deal and is
good on leases, too. I used it on my last
purchase to buy the car at $2000 under
invoice..It works, just remember to charge
day to day things like groceries & medical
bills that you will get reimbursed from
    insurance anyway...etc etc..

I own a '97 S-10 SS w/ ZQ8 suspension & L35 V6 that I'm quite happy with, espically since I did some brake work. I was having the same fading problems with the hot brakes and never particularly cared for the spongy feel that they had since new. I recently installed a rear disc kit from Stainless Steel Brakes Co. and man, the difference is night and day!
It was a pain in the [non-permissible content removed] to install but the benefits are worth it! The pedal is nice and firm and the stopping distances have drastically decreased all this and losing that nasty fade!
I do not ever treat my brakes roughly, hardly ever making panic stops, but the improvement was well worth it. They have these kits for almost any kind of truck you can think of and they are reasonably priced also.

I have a '97 K1500 with the 350 Vortec engine. The dealer told me the constant tapping noise (sounds like a valve) is the injector pump pulsing. Any feedbacks on this???
  • moe4moe4 Member Posts: 7
I have a '97 chevy 150 with the 350 engine, lately it has been taking a big hick-up and the brake and abs check light come on just for a moment, when this happens the engine stumbles but goes on fine after the brake light goes out. anyone have any idea's as to what is going on???
It has 39k on the clock. How does the brake light and the engine missing relate??? The truck just passed an extensive emmission test yesterday.
  • moe4moe4 Member Posts: 7
I had a tapping noise in mind that I kept complaining about and the dealer couldn't find it so they put a NEW gm motor in at 35k miles. It runs quiet now. keep going back it is not suppose to make noise!!!
  • quadrunner500quadrunner500 Member Posts: 2,721
The fuel purge valve has been mentioned as a constant source of ticking in other topics. A mechanics stethescope ($15) can help you locate the source.

As for the hick-up, are you getting a SES light too? If so, the trouble code can be read-out.

Just ordered my 2000 GMC 4x4 1500 Z71 ext cab today. No new options have been added to the 2000 model, however the price of the Vortec 5300 engine which I chose has gone up $100. Still no fourth door. EXpect delivery around the end of September .
Has anyone had problems with the 5300 engine?
  • RichinKsRichinKs Member Posts: 412
If you would check the Silverado topic you will see there is a forth door for 2000. It is an option and production will start in November (or later). Dealers have the option code for it. Rich

I have a 89 GMC truck with a 5.7 Liter engine that has 270,000 km. The engine needs replacing. What year of engine's can replace the old one.
  • mledtjemledtje Member Posts: 1,123
    Grover,

Have you thought about a new GM replacement engine? For around $1500 you can get a brand new engine with a 3 yr 50,000 mile warranty.

Depending on application, the engine could be as little as $1100.

On the other hand, a junkyard engine could be alot less, just stick with a truck engine to get the 4 bolt mains.
  • davisldavisl Member Posts: 3
I have a 98 silverado Z71 with 6400 mi, nothing but problems. Starting with the third door noise to a loud clunk when i accelerate from a traffic light. I also noticed unusual front tire wear. Dealer had to rotate at 6000. Now seeing problem again. I am looking at Dakotas now. Anyone want to buy a Chevy truck?
  • quadrunner500quadrunner500 Member Posts: 2,721
Can't your dealer fix those 3 problems? Tighten the door, align, balance and rotate the wheels, pretty normal stuff for a truck if you ask me. Clunk is probably driveshaft u-joint or loose pre-load on the differential pinion. Nothing major for a truck in warranty. Probably trade for 85% of what you paid. Sounds like you would be happier having your problems with a dodge instead.
  • 26andrew126andrew1 Member Posts: 93
clunk may be drive line lash. To fix put super ball and a bit of grease in the front of driveshaft.
  • quadrunner500quadrunner500 Member Posts: 2,721
They came out with the Super Ball around, or just after the time of flubber. The coolest ball ever, if you could keep from losing it.
  • grovergrover Member Posts: 3
Thanks I know the old small block Chevy parts are interchangeable but I was not sure about the new ones. The dealer engine sounds like a good idea.

First, I need to change my Wantaf150 handle; why? Because I just took delivery of a 1999 GMC Sierra SLE 4x4 with the 5.3L engine. Did not think any other truck would have swayed me from buying the F150, but after I test drove this Sierra, I was "swayed". The capper was the amount of room the GMC had over the Ford in its extended cab. MSRP of my truck was $31237.....got it for $27879.....$500 over invoice. I am extremely happy with my decision and look forward to many years of ownership. I am confident that this truck was the best buy for me. Was told by more than one person that the GMC PU's have the highest resale value in their class. I like the idea that the big GMC's are much rarer than the Chevy, Ford, or Dodge....Kinda makes me feel special......take care.....
  • aaron_aaaron_a Member Posts: 29
    Congradulation Michael on your purchase
I also have a 1999 fully loaded Sierra
There are fewer sierra's then Chevys too, which is kinda nice.
    Enjoy,

Congrats to both of you guys. I have a '98
K1500 Sierra Z71 myself. I bought it right when the new ones were about to come out (late August '98). I kept going back and forth on whether to get a '98 or to wait for the new ones. Although I know (and knew at the time) that the new trucks were better in many ways, the reasons I ultimately went with the '98 were:

    1. Better looking (I know this is highly subjective, but the '99's look like Toyotas to me)

    2. Proven reliable 5.7L engine

    3. Looked on Edmunds for the ratings of all the full size pick-ups (for '97) and GMC/Chevy was well above everyone else. So I figured the '98s shouldn't be any worse since they were essentially the same with a few improvements.

    4. Fantastic deal on a new '98. I got an SLE with all the goodies (MSRP $29,998) for $21,100 after my GM card rebate ($2,216) and the manufacturer's rebate ($750). I'm sure the impending new model played a big role in making the dealer want to get rid of this one for that price.

I'm really happy with my decision, because so far it's the best vehicle I've ever owned and the power and fuel efficiency of the 5.7L is phenomenal for a 5,100 lb truck. My average mpg is 17.44. When all or mostly highway driving, I've gotten well into the 19's and twice I've gotten over 20. That's about double what my old Blazer ('81) used to get with the same engine.
You guys made a good decision too, though.
I am wishing that I had the back seat room that you have and I've heard the 5.3L engine is fantastic. Oh well, maybe I'll trade in the '98 in 5 years or so. By then the 5.3L will be much better established and will probably be even more powerful and/or fuel efficient. Have fun

    Power is fun (Tim),

I too liked the pre 1999 GM full-sized P.U.'s. But, my research revealed that these new versions have considerable enhancements over their older brothers. I like the look of the new Sierra (esp around the hood). My last pickup was a 1991 Ford Ranger; had it for 5 1/2 yrs- great little truck. This new GMC is quite impressive; the 5.3 L engine is smooth and powerful. When I test drove this truck, it had less leaning into curves/turns than the F150 with ORP exhibited. The Sierra Z71 I now have is about 2 inches shorter than the F150 4x4, but has more ground clearance. That may explain its more "lean-to" in curves/turns. But, the Ford is still a great truck; but, the GMC was the one for me. Someone told me that the Sierra has the best resale value of all 1/2-ton Pickups, even better than the Silverados even though they are quite similar. Can anyone support this or know if it is so. Well, in any event, I am quite content with the Pewter beast parked outside my house......will take it to the hill country NW of San Antonio soon to check out its off-road abilities. CUL......

I'm getting ready to order a GMC Regular Cab, short bed, w/ tow package. Has anyone heard if the ZX3 suspension is available?

if it is available (meaning not on a contraint list), it's only on 2WD.

    Powerisfun-
    Thanks...
Before my 1999 Sierra I had a 1996 GMC truck, it was a shortbed 4x4 regular cab.. very little extra's
it was three years old and had 38,000 miles on it.. No problems with it, I loved that truck as well and was sad to see it go.. had some great memories
I was impressed with the ride of the New Sierra.. a HUGE improvement over the 96. enough so to purchase it, even though I liked my 96
If you have not driven a 99, I recommend giving it a shot, see what you think. I think you will be impressed… You may even walk out with a 99.. so don’t bring your checkbook :-)
Before the 96 GMC was a 1984 ford 100.. After the experience with that beast, I will never own a ford again... sorry Ford guys….
It's Great to hear that you're happy with your 98, that’s what’s important :-) Happy Trucken
    Have fun,

    ENGINE RAP.
My 1998 GMC 5.7 has a engine rap and is back
into the dealer once again. Hopefully they
will fix it or replace the engine. ANYONE ELSE?

This truck is still much better than my 1996,
    which went back. LEMON!
  • powerisfunpowerisfun Member Posts: 358
Thanks for the opinion. I've been meaning to test-drive a '99 (or a '00 soon), but I'm afraid of exactly what you mentioned...That I might walk out with one, or at the very least, lose that "lovin' feelin'" for my '98. I've heard so many great things about the new engines, though, that I really would like to see what the difference is.
The main draw for me at this point is the power and the flat torque curve (as the saying goes, "horsepower is what you read about, torque is what you feel"), as well as the roomier interior. I think if GM had put a 4th door on the
'99's in the first place (instead of waiting till 2000), I would have skipped the fantastic deal on the '98 that I got.

This is my first time on EDMUNDS; it's great. you
guys give comprehensive answers. I spent way too
much time on classicars where it was way too amateurish. I plan to buy a fully loaded 2000 silverado with 5300 engine. Will upgrade to the 6000 if thats a 2000 option for 1/2 ton.
  • mgdvhmanmgdvhman Member Posts: 4,157
No 6.0 for half tons yet.

    Buy a 3/4..they ride better!

GM has Horrible Cafe ratings..(the system that says what the whole fleet must get in MPG)

They need to sell more encoboxes to make up for all the gas hogs!....6.0's in the most popular truck (1/2 ton)..would kill their ratings

That is why you can get an S-10 for under 80 a month!...they need the MPG!

    Good luck

That 4th door isn't on the 2000 either. The one I have on order will be in in the middle of August.
    They may try a 4th in 2001.
  • hannerhanner Member Posts: 2
I test drove a 99 Sierra 3/4 with the 6000 engine and it was very strong off the line and ended up going way faster than I care to drive. I ordered mine on June 8 and expect to see it the first week in September.I was hoping for the fourth door as well but I need a truck this year. Mark
  • powerisfunpowerisfun Member Posts: 358
I've been hearing that the fourth door IS going to
be available after December or January on the 2000
models. You guys may want to wait before ordering
to see if that's true. A 4th door could mean
wanting to keep your truck a lot longer. Of course if you're the type that buys new every 2-4 years anyway, it may not matter to you.

i own a '91 s10 blazer w/ 135k miles. about 6 months ago the driver side window would not go down all the way. it would slow down and come to a stop before reaching the bottom (power windows). after getting prices on new window motor and/or labor(probably do it myself), i noticed that the passenger window does it also. i have the Haynes manual, but it doesn't go into great depth on the electrical system for the windows. i was wondering if one of you with lots of chevy knowledge would be able to let me know if the windows run off of a common relay or anything similar. as the temperature outside heats up, both of the windows get worse. any help would be appreciated, thanks in advance.

    thank god for A/C!!!!

    I recently purchased a 1999 1500 Sierra.
On the first day I noticed a driveshaft vibration
and returned to my dealer. I was informed that it was a defect caused by the two piece driveshaft not having enough angle fron the carrier bearing to the differential. this design defect,I was told,is further exaserbated by the soft rear springs which,on excelleration, allows the rearend to torque up. This action straightens the driveshaft even more causing a fairly radical vibration. I was told that GMs crack engeneers were working on a new set of springs to correct the problem. Of course these would be the same IDEOTS that designed the defect into the truck from the start. I cannot believe that the years that GM spent developing & testing this truck allowed them to miss this defect. They simply threw them into the market knowing that they were defective. Is it any wonder the Japanese have such a large share of the US market. In addition I found that the defect was common knowledge to everyone at the dealership. Both service & sales.Yet no mention was made of it to me at the time of sale. If I didnt know better I would think that GM & its Dealers were engaging in Deceptive Trade Practices. In summation, the design flaw and conspiricy of deception not withstanding,I am enjoying my new truck. And you for your perseverence in reading this are a little wiser.

For anyone that is interested, I emailed Chevrolet and asked them when they were going to start making the 4th door. They said it was set to begin production in November. I have been talking to a dealer about ordering a 3/4 ton. He called me the other day, and said to come in and build one up. I went last Friday to order a 2000 Silverado, because I thought that they could order a 4 door extended cab. I went to the dealership and he put all the stuff I wanted into the computer, then asked if there was anything else I wanted. I said "yeah, a 4th door." He said, oh we can't order that yet. So I told him that Chevy said they would build them in November, so he said that they could probably order them in September. The last pickup we ordered took 8 months to get, so I thought I would get my order in early. I thought maybe I would get one by Christmas, but if it takes 8 months to build the next one it will be well after that. Knowing my luck Y2K will come along, their computers will crash, and they will loose my order.

While I realize the driveline vibration problem you are having is real enough, my truck is not alone in not having such a problem. So I don't subscribe to the conspiracy theory, that this was a known defect, etc. Best of luck in getting it fixed though.

I'm considering a GMC 2500 with the 6.0L Vortec as a tow vehicle for my 9000 lb. 5th wheel. May even hook my 2500 lb. boat behind that if it does O.K. Does anyone have any experience with the 6.0L vs. the 454 while towing? Does anyone know if the 2000 6.0L will be rated any higher than the 99 in torque or H.P.? I hear rumors about GM offering a CAT diesel option in the near future. Anyone else hear that? I'm doin' this now with a 91 Ford 7.3L diesel and am hoping I won't be disappointed with the 6.0L gas in pulling power. Frankly, I'm a Ford man from way back but love the looks of the new GMC's vs. the Ford Super Duty. I know the Ford has the guts to pull but who wants to go though the hassle of finding one. Would appreciate any info anyone has.

    Thanks,

    Rick
