The unit worked fine, but I would get busted by VASCAR equipped Troopers. I would rely on the RD too much instead of keeping my eyes and ears open to other cars and potential radar traps. By the way, use your cruise control more and crank up the stereo, and go to one of those redeem yourself classes to get rid of some points to keep the ins. company from biting with those Premiums to grab your ankles over...

3 of us, in the Jetta, GVW of 3500lbs, & lots of momentum were on the way to dinner slid about 100 feet on a black-iced overpass. I had been accelerating up to the flat little bridge to about 45-50 mph and a car on other side stopped short behind a turning car on the land side with no black ice. I braked normally at 1st and the ABS was instantly pulsating as the tail end of that stopped car got scarily closer. My companions were uttering OH S**T ! repeadidly! I almost let off the brakes to pump but feeling the pulsation of the ABS reminded me to put both feet down to the floor with as much firm pressure on the brakes as possible to let the system do it's job. It was a true scary feeling but we stopped in barely enough distance just as the car ahead started to move forward...I feel lucky and drove in a very tame manner to the restaurant. "Shorts were checked upon arrival". My passengers did not even notice or feel the ABS system pulsating through the car; only my right foot on the brake pedal.

Now that story, balticjetta, really makes one appreciate the German technology that saved your life (and your friends). as developed by the people at Mercedes and present on most cars today.

I'm just happy to hear that you and your passengers didn't have to test out the airbag features. ;-)))

I would like to lease a 2001 jetta GLS and was wondering if any one had any ideas on the range of prices I should look for?

Just wondering what other owners of Jetta GLS 1.8T are getting for gas mileage. Mine is up to 39 mpg on the highway. The car has 2700 miles on it. I have learned to use cruise control after my $82 ticket last week. Let me know about your MPG. Thanks.

I have been getting about 29-31 MPG. I have about 2000 miles on mine.

The wheel is called a "LONG BEACH" I have not seen an official picture except on actual Jetta in stock or on my own. In a little pamphlet from VW parts on accessory alloys is a 17" wheel called a "SIATA" This wheel is very, very close to the "LONG BEACH" oem LuxSport wheel. A picture of the actual wheels on a Jetta can be seen @ cars.com under pricing/research for 2001 Jetta. The pix of a GLX but the wheel is the LuxSport one. Have fun searching for your newVW...

34.5 mpg doing what, highway driving?, I haven't gotten better than 26 driving around town with occasional highway driving. We're driving to seattle next week from wisconsin which'll be a real test of the gas mileage.. Just curious though. I keep it in a pretty high gear ~2000 rev most of the time as well..

I am the unfortunate owner of a 2000 VW GLX VR6 automatic. This silver bombshell is currently in the shop for its fourth transmission, a dysfunctional CD magazine, and a faulty door handle. It has a mear 15,000 miles. Within my first month of ownership, I had to replace the gas tank. Within of a few months of that I had the climatronic/ac system replaced. I tried to pretend not to hear the intense humming the car made at 40mphs but decided to get it checked out. And now here I am, on transmission #4. VW knows that these transmissions are problematic. The car was not even returned to me after they installed transmission #2 because it made more noise than transmission #1. Anyone else understand my transmission agony????

Your experience is unacceptable and understanding your deep frustration is of course warranted. I do believe that since the 4th gearbox has been done that you could very well be entitled to the CONSUMER PROTECTION LAWS that apply. Look in your original package of booklets to find this one. Some states have different variations in this "Lemon Law" I am not bashing our beloved Jettas. Your tranny ordeal has indeed had 3 strikes against it and we all want to enjoy our cars. Your's, of course has more lack thereof. Remember that like Lay's Potato chips, they will make more...Same here. VW will still keep building'em as they can find those wanted driver's. Remember that each state has their specific detail of the law. You very well can get a settlement, a completely new vw, or a full refund to free you to do as you please. Hopefully this is a mostly isolated problem; sorry bout your frustrations... Keep cool and pursue YOUR RIGHTS with diligence.. Good Luck !

I'm considering my first VW purchase after years with Toyota. What can you tell me about VW dealership and service departments west of Boston or in Southern N.H.? The VW sales and service shops nearest me are in Bedford, Mass., Lunenburg, Mass., and Nashua, NH. I'd like to use one of these (in the order listed), but I'd consider going even further if I could count on thoughtful, intelligent service, customer-oriented warranty use, timely appointments and waiting time, fair prices, readily-available parts, loaners, reasonable treatment, etc., etc. I hope these questions are appropriate for this site. I've been looking in Edmunds for another place where I could ask, so let me know if I should go elsewhere. Many thanks!

Well I can now join the club....

I just purchased a Jetta 01 JLS auto silver with black cloth interior, monsoon sound, Sunroof package and cold weatherpackage (it was already on the car). I love it... I think I got a good price..paid 300 over invoice so it was 19500+ttl.

I live in Dallas and got it at the Metro VW dealer in Irving TX. I would recomend this place to anyone they have the best service I have seen. Very laid back and no pressure. I cant wait till it is broken in...
  • balticjetta18tbalticjetta18t Member Posts: 146
Which engine option did you get in your new GLS?
  • flacaflaca Member Posts: 168
I can join also!! I am the proud owner of a 2001 Silver Jetta GLS 2.0 in Gray Leather, Monsoon, Luxury Package, CD changer ( 6- in trunk) and extended lease care. This is a really fun car to drive. I have named her my Silver Bella.I too have that goofy look when driving. I haven't had this much fun since I owned my first car: a 1973 240Z. The the 2.0 is just right for me. I am glad I did not get the Turbo. By the way, if anyone in So. Fl is looking to purchase a VW - go to VW Gunther in Ft. Lauderdale. See MIke Neal - the guy was a sweetheart. He even called me just now to see if my car was fine and if I had any questions. Now that's a first for me. I live in Miami but I drove the extra 30 minutes to deal with Gunther because 2 of my friends recommened them. Happy to be part of the Club!

I went with the 2.0 auto runs real nice. I was going to go with the manual but the wife complained that she couldnt drive it.

I did go with the extended lease just wanted to be fully covered. So how did my price compare?

  • k_h_bk_h_b Member Posts: 54
why are you glad you didn't get the turbo? I paid 20,100 for my Wolfsburg galactic blue/beige monsoon , heated seats, moonroof, 16 inch 3 piece bbs wheels, leather steering wheel, leather boot shift, sport cloth seats etc.. the 1.8 gets the same gas mileage as the 2.0 with a lot more bang.
  • flacaflaca Member Posts: 168
I had ordered a 1.8T Silver with Gray Leather. Impossible to get at the moment. I am not a speed demon - just a gal who really wanted Silver. Silly me. But to tell you the truth the 2.0 works really well for me. I love the car. The 1.8T would have been nice - but I am OK with this one. And it sure looks PRETTY. She's my Silver Bella. I test drove both. Besides I can use regular gas. Hey, I was used to driving a 4 cylinder Camry. This is peppy enough for me. LOL

I need my hand to change channels.LOL. Stick is a man thing, you know.
It's a power thing. I know, my hubby wants manual in his next car. But I think after awhile - it must get old. Besides, here in Miami there's lots of stop and go traffic. It's just not my ideal driving conditions.

Shall we not forget the Multi-Function steering column to let all genders have a 5speed and keep hands on the wheel...option is on one of the leather packages and is fun to change channels and maneuver at the same time...
  • flacaflaca Member Posts: 168
I do have the MF steering wheel. I was joking. I have always driven Auto - I will always drive auto. End of discussion.

Bert14, I had a really good experience at the VW place in Bedford and my roommate actually bought his Jetta there. On a whim one day, I went over to Boston VW (in Allston/Brighton) and got a much better deal. Boston VW is definitely a "volume" dealer so they're more concerned about getting the cars out the door, service was fine too, just not as nice as the Bedford place. I wish I could've got the car from them but in the end, it came down to $$$ and cents. Anyways, the guy I was working with at Bedford was named Jay Urban, he was the one who responded to my initiall email request. Good Luck!

I picked up my 2001 Jetta GLX, 5 Spd, Sport Suspension, CD... Silver. Last night! this car rocks. I had an 98 Accord V6, which flew, but this car moves! I love it. Can't wait for the break in period to end so I can really push it. I wish I wasn't at work so I could be driving it right now...

I personally think ASR is worthless. We've had 2 days of almost constant rain, and i reached that conclusion yesterday. The rain was coming down fairly hard, and i was making a right out of a shopping center on to a fairly busy street. I finally found a gap in traffic so i decided I'd go for it. When i got on the gas, ASR decided to bog the engine and almost cause the other car to hit me. I would much rather put up with some wheelspin, than almost cause accident. so, from now on, every time i get in the car the ASR gets turned off.

I don't know if anyone remembers, but not long ago, I had problems with the pinch protection on my passenger side window. Well, I kept putting it off and putting it off, and im glad i did. It seems to have fixed itself. Just thought i'd share.

Yes, I agree, the ASR is rather worthless. I live in Alaska and put snow tires on my Jetta. It took the ASR a while to get used to the snow tires. My Jetta has a very annoying habit at slick intersections with the ASR on, it will pull one direction and then catipult the other, I have come very close to hitting another vehicle. It took a while for me to get used to that and work to correct it before it does it. I have found in some situations the ASR is nice because I can get going where a normal FWD will sit and spin. I am hoping the ASR isn't a pain this summer.

Other than that my Jetta has been pretty good. I have found out that it doesn't like cold weather. I went out to start it yesterday morning, the engine heaters had been plugged in for about 4 hours. Anyway, I pushed the clutch in and put it in neutral, started it and let the clutch out and it quit. It did this twice until I finally jammed on the gas to make it stay running. Once I did that it was fine. The temp was about -25. Cranky car!!

I just bought a 2001 Jetta GL galactic blue and I love it!! I admired the Jetta's for along time and did alot of research. I ended up spending about 15k for mine and I think I got a great deal. My engine does have this knock that I am curious about. Anybody else have that problem??

I had my first jetta in 1989 while going to university and doing the 160 mile drive home on week-ends across the frozen prairies. I loved that car. It performed and gave great gas mileage - however, it also had two clutches and a transmission in the two year warranty period. It may have been the extreme cold driving ( some mornings it took serious strength to push the shifter through the tar-like frozen tranny fluid ) and it also may have been my girl-friend now wife who seriously blew a shift on a free-way ramp.

I now live on the Wet Coast and decided to get out front of the anti-SUV movement by trading in my Ford Exploder for a Jetta 1.8T Wolfsburg. My 50 mile commute now has a serious smile factor. I am 6 ft 3 in and have found several comfortable driving positions even with the sun roof. Rear seat room is less than the old Jetta however my 6 ft plus offspring can fit in back with a few concessions on my part. But it is my car - I didn't buy it to haul around big 20 somethings. The engine is a joy. Build is solid and finishing is quality funkiness. All controls require a little finer touch than North American cars require. The reward for thoughtful driving is a smooth power curve for pull out and pass, go-kart handling and a quiet interior. I still wonder about the the 2 year warranty.

Some of you will notice that your messages from yesterday no longer exist. There was a major hiccup in the system last evening. Hey guys great dialog... anyway wondering what you think of a deal I'm hacking out with my local Houston VW cartel. 2001 Jetta Wolfsburg 5sp, dk Blue, sunroof, monsoon, and 3040 demo miles on him. I've got them down to $19500 but in leu of the mileage, think they could do better. I'm very interested in what you guys think. I've just sold my 92 Jetta and dyeing to upgrade. Thankxs!
