I have a 2002 Liberty Limited with auto transmission. I'm getting under 14 mpg in moderate "suburban" driving... (stoplights, but a lot of interstate highway). Seems like it's just sucking gas. Is this typical? What (besides my driving habits) could be causing it? Any tips on increasing mpg?

Also, while I'm here, I might add that the thing is just awful on any kind of wet surface.... light rain gets me fishtailing. Admittedly, my Wrangler tires are in need of replacing. Any recos on tires for the Lib? Thanks!!!

That's about right for your mileage. Gas engines on these are NOT economical. There are Bridgestone tires. They are the best all around.
  • davexpertdavexpert Member Posts: 9
Thanks. I think there are times when I've gotten as low as 11 mpg.

My 03 is equally skittish on less than dry pavement so I always try to be in F/Time 4wd during those periods. Never slips or skids---very solid ride.

I do a lot of driving on the beach at Hatteras Island, NC., short of lifting my 04 Liberty Sport to gain sand clearance, what is the largest tire this vehicle will accept with stock suspension, when aired down to 18 lbs, I am actually dragging sand with the IFS on the Liberty. Any help would be appreciated.

My gf owns a 2002 Jeep Liberty with 80,000+ miles and has never engaged the 4wd. She has recently had the vehicle inspected (and received a clean bill of health), but I'm not sure how closely Joe Mechanic looks at the 4wd system. Are there any precautions I should take before using the 4wd? Is there any sort of "use it or lose it" aspect to 4wd?

I had the lower left ball joint on my 2002 Liberty fail today. Luckily I was in a shopping center parking lot. I had the lower ball joints replaced on recall in 2004.

I know that most people that post here arent happy....however, I thought people might want to know that there are some of us out here that are actually happy with our Jeep Libertys. I picked up an 06 Liberty Renegade a few weeks ago and just love it. The seats are fantastic, it has an amazing air cond system, the radio is great, it has a sunroof and it is really fun to drive. Yeah, so the gas mileage could be better, I knew that going in. I strap the kids into their car seats in the back and away we go, outside the city to visit with the cows and the horses at some nearby farms. I waited a long time to buy a Jeep - and this one is great! Hope a few other happy owners jump into this discussion once in a while too. Dave

I am writing this post looking for any info anyone can give me.
I am thinking about buying a jeep Liberty and have been doing some research on them.I have read about ball joint recalls and other recalls. What i want to know is do all the modle years of the liberty have this ball joint problem?are there specific modle years for this problem?are there any years i should stay away from.
I have been looking at the 2005 modle year does the ball joint probelm effect this modle year?what kind of problems has anyone come across in this modle year.
I currently own a 1997 dodge dakota 4x4 and have had nothing but problems with the ball joints both upper and lower and have had to replace them at my cost. The uppers are going out AGAIN.I don't want the same headaches again.
Does the liberty have this same problem of ball joints always going out every 30,000 miles.
Any feed back would be very apperciated.

donduck: Welcome to the forum. I had a 2002 and in 93,000 miles Left and right sided, top and bottom ball joints were replaced 5 times. I live on a very rough gravel, that goes up a steep grade for 1/4 mile, and 3/8 of a mile on the same but level road. I have put 14,000 miles on my first 2005 3.7 Limited Liberty, and traded it in on the 2005 Sport CRD (diesel) and I have experienced no problems with the ball joints at all. There seems to issues with the earlier years but if there are problems with the 2005's and 06's I don't think too much.
I would not let this issue be to worrisome.

Has anyone purchased and installed a kit on their 06 liberty? I'm wanting to dress up the interior on this sport model, but afraid to buy one of the kits, thinking it might just be poorly fitting stickers. Thanks

Id recommend getting your transmission looked at at 10k for signs of wear.
I felt just like you, i loved my 06 renegade. Then It all went to hell.

Today my jeep would not start. The rear door window/ door kept clicking like it is trying to unlock. The door will not open. This killed my battery. Now the lights won't come on and the other doors will not lock. This is the first problem we have had since we got it a yr ago. Anyone else have this problem? Thanks!
  • nadyanadya Member Posts: 1
Mine just did this over the weekend, which is really bad, since I have 3 dogs and a pet guard and now the door is locked until I get it fixed. I just called Jeep and there is a recall on the rear door/window latch so at least the fix will be free.

Is there anyone who can comment on the 6 speed manual version of the Liberty? How do you like it and would you recommend it? How does it shift? Is the clutch engagement touchy or progressive? What's the mileage like? What rpms is it turning on the highway? Do you have to downshift to pass on the highway?

Also - benibiker - how do you get so much better mileage than everyone else? What are the conditions under which you normally drive? How do you measure your mileage? Are you in Canada or somewhere where the gallons are bigger? :) (If I'm right about that for Canada) I only ask because many people complain about mileage in the teens but a rare few seem to do better.

So many questions so little time :D

I had the same problem today with my Jeep. I was curious as to what you did to fix the problem. Did you manually fix it or did you have to take it to a repair shop?
  • orange04orange04 Member Posts: 2
I have a 2003 Jeep Liberty Sport. I went to open my tailgate and only the window poped open. The gate would not release. Has anyone else had this problem? What measures did you take to get it fixed? Was it expensive? :confuse:

I just found out there will NOT be a Jeep Liberty REMEGADE for 2007. I don't care for them much, but I am sure this is not good news for those who do.

Steve: I saw this at Mikes, today. This looks more room in the back, which is a nice design change. I wonder if this better change in the 08 will effect 07 sales. I like the parts we can see, much better.

Some are saying (guessing?) that it looks more "manly" than the current Liberty.
  • faroutfarout Member Posts: 1,609
Steve, Defining "manly" has many definitions. Our daughter goes to Beauty School, and there is one fellow there who wares high heels. I think her is in touch with his "female side". So there are many ways to understand "manly"

Its starting to look like the dodge nitro. Will this be bigger/heavier than the current liberty?
  • tidestertidester Member Posts: 10,059
Hi, everyone. As you've probably noticed, we have been trying to refine the discussions into more narrowly focussed topics. Our objective is twofold. We want to make it easier for people seeking specific information about their vehicles to find it easily and without having to wade through hundreds or thousands of postings.

To those ends, we will be shutting down the general make/model discussions and work exclusively with specific issues. This requires us to populate the make/model subsections with relevant, interesting and timely topics. Rather than having the hosts simply create boilerplate topics for each make/model, we feel that you, the owner, the make/model enthusiast and the prospective buyer can best judge what those topics should be.

You can help by adding a discussion (it's easy!) or suggesting one here.

To add a discussion, click on the last link in the "You are here" line at the top of this page. That will take you to the topic page for this make/model. Review the list of topics and click on the "Add discussion" link when you've decided what topic you'd like to add. Follow the directions and you're done! Feel free to add more than one. Just avoid duplicating existing topics and try not to make it TOO specific!

Your help and continued participation in the Forums is greatly appreciated! Thanks.

Not only does it have no camo, but it even has a 2006 parked next to it!

I like the way the spare tire is no longer stuck on the back for easy pickens. The longer length just might mean more weight and less fuel mileage. The lines of the Liberty sure look more attractive than that of the Nitro. Who ever accepted the design of the Nitro and the Caliber sure did not have my taste in mind. I do not like the front end style at all.

Having never worked on one so equipped, I was just wondering how much of a problem it is to change the oil and oil filter on a Liberty (with the 3.7 V6) equipped with the skid plate group. Do you have to remove a skid plate/plates to get to the drain plug and/or filter? How much mess do you get into? (Lord knows it couldn't be as "messy" as changing the oil filter on a CRD. Nasty little buggar!)

We have had this jeep for about 4 months and the check engine light came on, at first we thought it was just bad gas but when it started blinking we knew we were in trouble..so we took it to our local autozone and they did the diagnostic thing..(which is cheaper but not better than the dealer i know) and they said it was either the spark plugs or the coils..so we replaced the plugs it went off for a day and came right back on..no blinking yet but we are trying to figure out what is causing it....we have no decreased performance or acceleration it is acting like normal...it drives fine even under a heavy load bc we helped his sister move earlier that week..PLEASE HELP we do not have the money to waste and i have been worried for so long...what do you think it could be? :confuse:

I ordered my Liberty CRD Limited with the standard AM/FM Single CD radio (RBQ) and factory installed SIRIUS. I bought a new RB1 (AM/FM CD NAV) radio so I could get information when listening to SIRIUS (channel name, artist name, song title). I installed the RB1 and it does not give me any information only the channel number. I get the SIRIUS channels and everything else works fine, just no information. Anyone else do this swap? Do I need to take it to the dealer for a reprogram? Did I do something wrong? TIA.

Does anyone have a problem with a leaking sunroof? Water comes in both doors, also in the fuse box, and carpets saturated. It is a Jeep Sport 65 Liberty and I bought it new.

Just sharing experience here... That stupid light that looks like an engine (upper right corner of the display) came on after I filled up at a station on Thursday.

It would not go away. I assumed I'd filled up with bad gas, or forgot to properly attach the gas cap. Thus, I removed the gas cap and re-attached it. The Service Engine light did NOT go away.

So, in the light of day, I looked at the gas cap and found nothing wrong. However, to the RIGHT of the fuel filler neck there's a small steel thing that I assume is a sensor. I wiped that with my finger, reattached the gas cap and drove on.

1 mile later, the light went off.

Am I correct in assuming that steel thing (looks like a small washer with a dimple in the middle) was blocked, and causing a false engine alarm?

I'll note that there was zero performance lock, no engine knock or any untoward changes in the performance of my 2004 Silver Liberty Renegade. I had a general mechanic (my father) look at the truck and was told there was absolutely nothing wrong that he could perceive.

If a silly sensor can be fixed by wiping it with your finger... how much would a Jeep dealership have charged you to diagnose that? :)

You will need to abandon the original cable to the RB1 and Sirius tuner that is behind the passanger side panel in rear of liberty, and replace it with cable P/N 82208322 which you can order from the dealer at about $40.00. Hope this helps.

My 06 Liberty came with U-Connect which is part of the rear-view-mirror. What radio do you have? Do you have a single cd player, or is it the 6 disc cd changer?
  • ned412ned412 Member Posts: 16
I have the 6 cd changer. I saw it was an option but it wasn't listed on the sticker. There is nothing on my rear view mirror.

    Hi all,
Bought my daughter a 06 liberty with 14k miles, she had it about a week and was shopping, when she came back to leave
it would not come out of park. Called roadside and they did something with the keyless entry, lock unlock off on,and walah it was out of park. Well week two on her way home from the holidays 300 miles from home parked at the hotel and same thing stuck in park..

    Anybody have a clue??

    Thanks

  • dave_justdavedave_justdave Member Posts: 29
If its the standard Jeep keyless entry, get it back to the dealership to resolve this ASAP. If its an aftermarket item, you need to get it back where you bought it to get this fixed. I've never heard of this type of problem before - the only time I've ever heard of an automatic stuck in park is when the driver forgot to fully depress the brake pedal before trying to shift out of park! Otherwise, cant figure out why the keyless entry would have any affect at all. Good luck and let us know what happens.

What radio do you have with the factory UConnect?

The factory version has more and better features than the dealer installed version. Dealer installed version has a dash button thing and not in the mirror.

I have an RBQ 6 disc in dash cd radio and want desperately to hunt down the parts needed to get the factory uconnect installed. Mirror buttons, microphone in the mirror (dealer verion has a tacky separate mic).

I would like to know if the RBQ with 6 disc is compatable with the factory version. Thanks.

Recently while driving my water pump froze and a belt broke and the battery went dead. I had the water pump replaced along with the belt and also a new battery was installed. This was done by a Jeep dealer. Now the radio works, but the 6 CD in dash changer won't work. It doesn't make any noise at all. I can't even eject cds. I was using it at the time the car vehicle went dead on the highway. Any ideas?
  • dave_justdavedave_justdave Member Posts: 29
After the battery is disconnected from today's stereos or CD changers, you often need to enter a reset code in order to make them work. This is to prevent people selling items they have stolen out of vehicles. If your CD changer is the factory model from Chrysler, get the dealership to reset it for you. If not, contact the store where you had it installed. Good luck.
