Does anyone have a Highlander with OEM fender flares and 18x8 +20 offset wheels w/ 255/55r18 tires? I'd like to see if fender flares make up for the extra wheel/tire protrusion from the body w/ this wheel/tire setup. Thanks!
When we purchased our 2001 H/L Limited I walked over to the Toyota parts dept. and bought a hood protector and installed it myself that night. That was June 2001 and it's almost June 2005 and the same one is still on our H/L. It was easy to install and if I remember correctly was in the $75 dollar range.
I am dealing with that exact situation right now. I will post any information I gather. The parts guy at Stevens Creek Toyota said something about "drilling", but I don't see where or why for that matter. It was also suggested that the hooks can be installed by removing the plastic caps, located on the back panels. I have two sets of the caps on each side. If you pop the cap there is a bolt head about an inch down, evidentally you remove the exisiting bolt and replace it with the screw that comes with the cargo net hardware. Since my Highlander is brand new, 1,600 miles, I am reluctant to drill or remove anything.
Good Morning all ... I am having a few oddities at the moment and wondering if anyone else is having or had these experiences. My sun/moon roof remains "not normalized", even after I attempted to normalize it. Second, this morning when I stopped to get the newspaper (engine still running) my automatic locks mysteriously unlocked and would no longer respond to the button, same with the rear windows? My locks do respond to the security remote however??? Just new car "buggie" stuff, operator error or common issues???
I just installed the cargo nets in my 05 HL. The instructions say remove the plastic cap closest to the rear door, remove the bolt head, drill a 5/16 inch hole in the plastic cap, place the screw that comes with the cargo net on the hole in the plastic cap and align it with the hole from the bolt, then screw on the cargo net clip. It was a little unsettling, but the results were satisfactory.
Folks, Anyone with a 04/05 HL w/ factory installed fog lights, are you able to have on your high beams with your fog lights at the same time or does the fog lights chip out when you turn on the high beams?
I have never had a vehicle where the fogs would be on when on high beam. Fogs are always wired to be on with low beams only. This is not just Toyota, all makes as far as I know.
I have also just installed a cargo net on a 2005 highlander, and the instructions were nothing like described above. The net came with 2 templates. Remove the small round rearmost cover caps (left and right sides), align the template over the large hole that the cap was in, and about an inch below the hole is a mark for drilling. Drill a 1/4 inch hole on the mark, just through the plastic panel (keep drill depth to about 5/16 inch or less, so as not to hit anything behind the panel). Remove the tail light bulb access panels on both sides. You will then be able to reach behind them and insert the cargo net hook retaining bolts through the holes you just drilled, from the inside (BE CAREFUL! If you drop the bolt, it'll be a fishing expedition to recover it). While holding the bolts in place, thread the cargo net hooks onto the bolts (make sure they're oriented horizontally when tight). Replace the small round covers and the tail light bulb access covers. That's all there is to it.
I had to put some closure on this post; I bit the bullet and had Toyota install the bug-shield and cargo net. They were already doing the spoiler, so I decided what the heck. The embarrassing part is I was a 63B (mechanic) in the Army about 20 years ago. Needless to say, the Army did not awaken any “inner gear head” in my psyche. The installation cost for all three, a mere $300.00! I suspect you could probably do better then that if you called around. This way though, if that bug-guard comes flying off on the freeway or that spoiler is crooked, it’s on Toyota!
1) The Moon Roof required a complete un-plug and re-set (warranty). And 2) The bizarre lock phenomenon was a result of an alarm wire installed incorrectly (also Toyota warranty). So, just new car bug type issues. Has not changed my opinion of the vehicle though, still a great buy.
Sorry, I have no idea how they actually did it, as I was not present. It looks good though (solid), and I am happy I did it. My wife has an '04 RX 330 and even Lexus did not go the extra mile and make the hooks standard. She claims she did not use it that much on her old Lexus, and thought the money was better spent elsewhere (clothes).
The dealership did a sloppy job on the spoiler though (noticed yesterday) and one of the alarm repairs consisted of disconnecting my horn from the alarm!?!? So what, now my Highlander just yells for help??? I have no regrets about going to the dealer though, as it is now their issue to resolve, not mine.
I have had some reservations about installing the second alarm though. My Highlander came standard with an ignition anti-theft system. The problems I am having may be caused by dueling systems, like running two anti-virus programs on a computer? In hindsight, it was a stupid idea. Wish I could have them take it out and refund money.
My two cents ... not much information, but much hot air!!!
I just installed cargo net last night on my 2002 HL.. I still have the directions and template. I can fax or send to you tomorrow if you like. The net is the same for a 2004 and I bought at dealership.
I personally found my 2005 Highlander practically useless for hauling everyday cargo (such as groceries) without the cargo net. The net is actually a double net that opens at the top to form sort of a net bag, and putting grocery sacks and small items in that net kept them conveniently upright and in place. But larger items (such as a 6-pack of canned drinks) slid around on the carpet like thay were on ice. Not an acceptable situation. I fixed this problem by purchasing a Nifty Cargo Logic cargo mat (see for details). This is a mat that's form-fitted to your vehicle cargo area (the area behind the second seat). It's made of molded rubber with a lip (to contain spills), and the top side is made of Velcro, and looks just like a carpet. It comes with a couple of plastic right-angle blocks with Velcro on the bottom, that can be placed anywhere on the mat to hold objects in place. Extra blocks are available. Works like a charm. If you want to save money (the mat is about $90), I found that the velcro-backed blocks will hold extremely tightly to the original vehicle carpet (but NOT to the Toyota floor mats). So if you don't mind removing the floor mats, and exposing your original carpeting to the abuse of carrying cargo, spills, etc., you can probably get away with just purchasing the blocks (around $18 a pair). Or, cheaper still, you can put some Velcro tape on the bottom of almost anything (wood blocks, plastic tote boxes, etc.) and stick it to the carpeting (again, it won't stick to the floor mats covering the carpet). Hope this helps someone.
The saga continues. Highlander goes back to Stevens Creek Toyota (San Jose, CA) on Tuesday for mystery electrical issue. Door locks continue to "pop" open for no apparent reason and the controls for windows/door will not function (except drivers window and sun/moon roof). Just by nature of the way it's behaving, this has to be some kind of default action by the car. It sounds like my dealer out-sources their electrical diagnosis and repair? Like I said before, I have a sneaking suspicion the two security systems are clashing. Problem is, the one that came with the vehicle is for the ignition only, not break in. So, to be 100% covered I required both. Just seems odd I am the only one with this phenomenon!?!?
Has anyone installed the Vaistech aic100i in their Highlander with NAV to get on screen info and control and charging for an ipod? I am interested in setting this up.
Has anyone found any other solutions for ipod and or Sirrus SAT radio without external cables and boxes?
John13, First let me say I followed all your instructions and bought all the parts listed and they came on perfectly. However, did you have to purchase any other pieces to hold in the fog lamps or is the bearing and protector covers enough to hold them in? The reason I am asking is because at the top of the fog light assemblies, they have 2 holes like something is to screw into them to hold in the top part of the fog lamp to the bumper, it would appear that this would also allow you to adjust the fog lamps. I did stop by a dealer and they did not have any other part in their system to attach at these locations and so I am not sure if I am reading into this too much. Please let me know if there were any other part to buy. If there is anyone else out there who did this installation, please advise me. Thanks
The fog lamps snap in to the recesses in the holes and seem quite secure with the protector rings on them. I did mine about 3 months ago and it took about 45 minutes including replacing the switch on the steering wheel column
Also, if anyone knows what size bolts I would need or where I could get them, I would appreciate it as well.
I have seen on the intenet that their are installation kits that you can get for about $6. Does anyone knows what those kits include? I know they come with installation instructions and the template. Does it include the bolts?
I imagine it’s because of my own ignorance/laziness, but my Toyota dealership is fleecing me big time!!! The “electrical issue” was the “master plug” not secure. Toyota claims when the stereo was installed the installer didn’t make sure the plug was totally plugged in. Of course this was not found the first time around. Anyway, $60.00 to push a plug in. I will handle reimbursement with the Stereo Company. Since adding a few things and upgrading the speakers/amp this Highlander has become an expensive proposition. My parting advice, if you want to spoiler, net, bug shield, ect. Negotiate it at the time of sale; many of these options get “thrown in” one way or another. None of these very minor inconveniences has changed my mind about this SUV. I don’t want to jinx myself, but I think (knock wood) I’ll have clear sailing from here on out. Thanks for tolerating my rambling posts!!!
There is a "speed signal" input to the nav computer as well as the display screen This signal grays out the screen and disables the computer. I have been reluctant to fool with this due to warranty concerns. My screen went south and had to be replaced. Everything operates normally again. You can, while at speed, move your map position and enter a new destination. A small benefit.I may still try to disable the speed signal, I have the electrical "schematics" for the HL.These are great for black box changers( toyota service) but not so great for real electronic info. I am sure disabling this annoying feature is either pulling the speed input up or down. One of these days I will get my equipment and do some digging. I will pass on what I find.
I own a 2005 HL and would like to put pinstriping on it. I have the indigo blue. Any suggestions for color and location? I'm also looking into putting in an aftermarket sunroof. Any suggestions from other HL owners?
hello all my questions: 1. does anybody know where i can find install manual for 2005 HL running boards? not the lighted ones, not sure if it makes a difference i would like to try to read through it before deciding to purchase. i definitely can not afford going to a dealer to have them install it 2. does anybody know where i can get one for cheap other than ebay. i need to be able to return it if i can't put it on 3. other than dealer, does anybody know who can install the running boards w/o voiding the warranty sorry for all the questions, really would like to install the running boards.
Just a thought. We negotiated the running boards when we bought our HL and they still cost too much IMO. Wife is 5' 2" and thought they would ease entry. In the real world since we have had the HL neither of us have used the running boards more than twice each. I wouldn't do it again that is for sure. Now if you are doing it for looks (ours are color matching which is the only way to go) that is another matter.
You can find lots of Highlander running boards--just Google it. Putting them on's another story though. You have to ask yourself, "am I in good shape?" "Do I like getting under cars with wrenches?" "If the rails don't fit right, do I know how to grind them down?" If you answer no to any of these questions--don't do it! Even so, after you get them installed they're not that bad. If you lose one of the "L" bolts inside the chassis hole, then be prepared to go fishing. Muscling the actual bars onto the rails takes almost super-human strength. Better get someone to help you! A manual's not necessary, most of them come with instructions. Oh yeah, one thing--they weigh 50lbs. or more. So if you want to lug something like that around or return them, better think about it twice. I almost returned mine, but I couldn't get any response from the company....
Were you successful in getting your fog lights installed? I have a 2005 hl and am desperate to get a pair installed. THe dealership today stated that they would install them for me if I bring to them the appropriate parts and wiring kit. Any help that you or the forum can provide, I would greatly appreciate.
I am looking for where to get the lamps, wiring and overall installation kit for the fog lights.
I have a 2005 V6 - need to install fog lights and would love to hear from the forum on how to go about getting the necessary installation kits and parts. The dealership here stated they would do the labor if I can find the required parts.
Please advise - with the experts on this forum, someone must know the approach to take to getting this installed successfully.
I have an '04 HL and the heatwave here in the midwest has highlighted the weaknesses in the air conditioning system of my HL. The car is parked all day at work in the sun and, come end of day, when I head home the AC takes a long time to cool the car down.
I understand that there is a switch that turns off the hot water in the climate control plenum - search as I might, I cannot find reference to this mod in the forums. Can anyone help?
What you may try doing that works very well is push the "recirc" button that looks like a half circle with an arrow at the end. Rather than having to de-humidify and cool the outside air, it will just recirculate the already cooler interior air.
First of all, thanks to everyone for their useful suggestions/comments. I recently became the proud owner of a 2005 Highlander V6 2WD Un-Limited! Like everybody else, love every bit of it EXCEPT the Audio system (Non-JBL w/6 speakers). I scanned through various discussions on this website and noted that just replacing the speakers makes a big difference. I have been researching online for speakers and have a few questions.
1. In the front, do I have to replace both the tweeters and mid-range speakers or would it suffice if I replaced just the 6.5in speakers.
2. I was thinking about the Infinity Ref Series 6002i for both front and rear speakers. What do you guys think of it? I read somewhere that the rear speakers need to be more powerful than front speakers. Is that true?
3. I want to stay away from adding an amplifier and sub-woofer at this time. Is there a way to 'amplify' the sound from the rear speakers? The sound from the rear stock speakers is too low (can hardly hear anything).
I have a new HL that came with the towing package but no hitch. I'll need one and so am interested in information about adding a hitch. Any other recommendations. I hear that the after market options may not be geared to the 04 and 05 3rd row seat designs
Does anyone know how the average mpg is calculated. Each time I start the ignition the average mpg starts where it left off the previous trip.
My radio volume/on-off switch is stiff to turn compared to the tone control on the right side, and I wondered if this is typical.
I'd really recommend replacing the tweeters as well; tweeters have a very significant affect on the overall quality of the sound.
Not familiar with the specific model of speakers you referenced, except generally Infinity is a good speaker brand for car audio. As you obviously have a good idea of the level of sound quality you want in a car audio system, I'd strongly recommend going to an audio store and personally listening to the speakers before purchasing and installing them. Take your time while auditioning them at the store, bring a CD with the type of music you listen to, play the music at a fairly loud volume as you will be doing this while driving your HL to overcome the highway noise, and "sleep on it" before making the decision. (I made the big mistake going on a salesman's recommendation instead of listening to the speakers, and now I'm living with that mistake every day!)
I know the JBL system has a front/rear fade control; if the non-JBL systems have it as well, then this should address the issue of amplifying the rear speakers more than the fronts. I agree at least for my taste that biasing the balance toward the rear speakers gives the audio system a much fuller sound!
You may also consider posting your question on some of the forums on the web that specifically cater to car audio.
Thanks for the reply. I was already running recirc, it still doesn't pump out particularly cold air on days 90 deg or more, takes forever to cool the car down. I know about the latent heat in the dash and so on but the air coming out of the AC just isn't that cold on hot days.
I know there's a workaround to this by switching off the hot water in the plenum of the climate unit, just not sure how to do it.
I could really use some help and guidance in finding out the steps and materials needed to install fog lights into my '05 HL? There are some very knowledgable persons on this forum who I am hoping can help.
Specifically, I am looking for help in knowing where to go to purchase an installation kit and/or wiring harness kit - essentially I need to know and find all the key pieces needed for a successful installation of fog lights. I need more light at night to drive and am desperate to get this in place. Thanks.
I had a customer recently that went through the same process that you're going through. Our first attempt was to get the factory fog lights, and use an aftermarket installer for the power and switchgear. I don't know the specifics, but this didn't work for some reason. What ended up happening, was that he needed the Factory lights, relay and new blinker/headlight stalk installed and all worked. The parts from what I recall were about $200 each for a total of about $600. I don't recall what the installation cost though.
Folks, Has anyone out there had any success programming the HL body computer to lock the doors when shifting out of Park? I have this feature on my 2004 RX-330 and my wife had it on her 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee which she traded on the HL. The dealer is clueless and has been no help. I know other Toyota models have this feature. Thanks!
I have installed an aftermarket spoiler and forget about the templates and stuff. The easiest and most accuracte way to postion the spoiler is the following. 1) Place the spoiler on the hatch and check it for level and positioning. Then mark the outline using a magic marker. 2) Push cotton into the bolt holes on the spoiler so that the cotton protrudes from the holes. Apply nail polish to the cotton and reposition according to your marks. Be care an try to make this a one step positioning. Hold firmly in place for about a minute. 3) Remove by pulling the spoiler away quickly in an outward motion. 4) You will now have four marks where to drill. Drill a pilot in a piece of wood to check that you have the right size bit. I'm not sure of the hole size and it depends on the bolts or screws you use anyway.
Be care and check out the inside of the hatch on the drivers side. There are rubber caps on the passangers side that allows access to the holes you just drilled. On my 04 there was only a single cap on the drivers side so I drilled a 1" hole on the insdie so I could install both driver sides bolts
You may also try to replace the cabin air filter. I have a 2003 hl and that filter change helped alot. If you don't know the cabin filter is behind the glove box
Question for you regarding the spoiler: Did you install it for looks or for practicality? I know they look good, but do they do any good as far as gas mileage or airflow dynamics go? My black '05 would look cool with a spoiler, but would it help in any way other than looks?? Maybe it would help keep the rear window cleaner??? It's tough to justify based on looks alone... BigW
The spoilers on the Highlanders are actually not just a "look good" accessory. They do a very good job of drawing air from over the top of the vehicle down over the rear window keeping spray, dust, etc. off of it.
I have a new Highlander Hybrid. I want to put a trailer hitch on it, but the dealer wants a ridiculous price to put on the hitch (over $700). I checked one aftermarket hitch place, and they said that aftermarket hitches for this vehicle won't be out for 6 months or more. Does anyone know if the hitch mounting for the '06 hybrid is really that different than the regular '05 mounting? I have the 3rd row seats. From what I read in the forum, that seems to make a difference too, though I don't know why (the seats are on the INSIDE of the car, the hitch goes on the OUTSIDE of the car... hmmm....). Anyone know if there are electrical issues with the converter box on a hybrid?
I also had some blowback from the dealer mechanic, who said he wouldn't tow anything with a hybrid due to the CVT transmission, despite the fact that Toyota OK's the vehilcle to tow. I am only towing a trailer full of kayaks, perhaps 1100 lbs total fully loaded, and usually no more than 30 miles or so at a crack (though often up mountain passes). Does anyone have a clue as to whether this is really an issue?

Are you able to have on both your high beams and your fog lights at the same time?
:confuse:
Anyone with a 04/05 HL w/ factory installed fog lights, are you able to have on your high beams with your fog lights at the same time or does the fog lights chip out when you turn on the high beams?
1) The Moon Roof required a complete un-plug and re-set (warranty). And
2) The bizarre lock phenomenon was a result of an alarm wire installed incorrectly (also Toyota warranty). So, just new car bug type issues. Has not changed my opinion of the vehicle though, still a great buy.
Peace all
