The heater does not work in 88 Mercedes-Benz 560sl. The blower motor works but the air coming out is not hot. What should I look at? Motor tempature is OK.

Hi all, the heating in my 91 Accord wagon is not working. The fan runs OK. But the temp in the car is not reaching above 60. Got diagnosed with a dealer. They said "CHECKED HEATING SYSTEM AND FOUND HEATER CORE IS PLUGED NOT ALLOWING HEAT TO ENTER CABIN". Don't know what it is but dealer said it will be $800 everything installed. Anyone has any experience like this? Is it worth spending that money?

Any details on this are appreciated.

    Thanks

The plugged heater core theory is rather far-fetched...not impossible, but certainly not the most likely cause...and besides, if the heater core is plugged, the rest of your cooling system must be in awful condition as well, as they share the same coolant.

In cars with automatic climate control, the servo unit is always suspect, and especially on Mercedes, which have pretty lame climate control systems, historically speaking. So on the SL, I'd definitely look to the climate control servo, which is supposed to automatically open the various valves and ducts to allow heat into the car. This is, unfortunately, an expensive repair.

Other reasons for no heat include low coolant in the radiator, malfunctioning thermostat, broekn cables on MANUAL climate control systems, and malfunctioning heater valve on manual systems. Maybe others can think of more possibilities, but these come to mind.

I'm not convinced the dealer is right about a plugged system...he'd have to prove it to me by showing me mud coming out of my heater core once he removed it.
