I called this salesman today. He said that for a 2008 Honda Civic LX with the options I wanted : Mud Guard, Trunk Liner, Door Edge Guards and Window Tint it was going to be $ 17,800 base WITHOUT the tint. I

made the mistake of telling him that I could get the car for $18,600 in Dallas with the tint, but I refuse to get the car here because of that and that you had gotten the car for $15, 987. (I will pay the TX state taxes here.)

Help! Is this a good price? He said that Honda manufacturing is telling the dealerships that this is the best that they can do. He said that I can wait until late August and the price might drop when the 2009s come in, but there might not be any cars left.

Any opinons on what I should do, please?

I emailed about 15 dealers asking for their best price including all the fees, taxes, etc.

Some of the dealers didn't respond at all, I received quotes ranging from $17,184 to $18,430. I chose the dealer with the lowest combined fees, Babylon Honda.

Bronx Honda also appeared to be a good deal but they didn't have silver in stock.
Paramus Honda was also very attractive because they had pretty competitive prices and a number of benefits for internet customers such as free key replacement....HOWEVER, at the end of the day I went with the lowest price.

Here's from my bill of sale from Babylon Honda:
17,269.00 LX AT Civic (includes destination charges)
    1,273.59 Sales tax
    130.00 NY Registration Fees
    67.50 Document Fee/Waste Tire Fee
    18740.09 TOTAL INCLUDING TAX

Quite a bit of variance in dealer fees. The information below is correct to the best of my knowledge. In cases where the dealership didn't respond about NY DMV fees, I used the highest quoted fee of $228, so the actual fee may be less.

Dealer State Emailed LX AT Price Destination Fee NY DMV Fee Fees Total W/Trunk Liner Combined Fees
    Paramus Honda NJ Yes $17,184 $0 $215 $199 $17,598 $17,718 $414
    Babylon Honda NY Yes $17,269 $0 $228 $0 $17,497 $228
    Bronx Honda NY Yes $17,500 $0 $0 $0 $17,500 $17,500 $0
    Paul Miller Honda West Caldwell NJ Yes $17,519 $200 $199 $17,918 $399
    Sussex Honda NJ Yes $17,734 $0 $228 c $17,962 $18,076 $228
    Potamkin Honda NY Yes $17,760 $670 $228 ? $18,658 $898
    Curry Honda Yorktown NY Yes $17,869 $228 included $18,097 $18,214 $228
    Princeton Honda NJ Yes $18,395 $228 $197 $18,820 $18,928 $425
    Hudson Honda NJ Yes $18,430 $228 $199 $18,857 $18,972 $427

    Good Luck everyone!

    Abigail2,

I live in Dallas-Tx...Can you tell me the name of the dealer?
Unfortunately the dealers here in Dallas are not very cooperative. :(

I lived in CA about 45 minutes north of Oakland. Well, lets just say Oakland is not the best of cities....Maybe another area??? I have read many comments in this forum many of which were CA and didn't read any with this complaint. Just a thought.

I live in West Chester and could not make a deal at Scott Honda---I will not pay MSRP like some others in the area---anyone have a great, productive experience???
  • grabsjokergrabsjoker Member Posts: 7
Go back in time about 3 months and get it then? Seriously, it would be pretty difficult at this time to get that deal, since most dealers in TX are charging MSRP and up, thus making the OTD price even higher... We gave up on a civic and went for a corolla. Good luck though!

so i picked up a new civic lx sedan last week. i was quoted 17,149 and with taxes and registration and everything it ended up being almost 19,000 out the door. the only extra i added was an alarm system. i also qualified for 1.9% apr financing for 3 years. overall, it was a decent deal.

also, i got quoted for 16,800 for a civic LX coupe.

i was in a rush to get the car so i didn't have time to haggle too much. so i think that these prices should be pretty easy to get.

    good luck guys.

Try Rusty Wallis Honda in Dallas. We got a great deal from them back in December on a 2008 Civic LX Sedan. I contacted virtually all of the Honda dealers in the DFW metroplex. Rusty Wallis had the best price AND gave us what we wanted. They also had consistently positive reviews online, unlike many other dealerships in the area. I did all of the negotiating with Rusty Wallis via email.

Any visibility into new (if any) Civic incentives effective after July 7th? I saw a mention of new Ody incentives in the Odyssey price forum.

I've ordered my car but it won't be delivered until the begining of Aug. I'm guessing there will not be anything on the civic- as least sedan- but hopeful.
  • civictorycivictory Member Posts: 73
I believe the forum prohibits posting specific names or contact info, but here's what I suggest:

The salesperson we dealt with was in the Internet Sales department. You can go to the Rusty Wallis website and find pictures and email addresses of the sales reps in that dept. (I'm not sure the person we dealt with is still there, even if I could share her name.)

Just some background on our car-shopping experience... I contacted a number of Honda dealers in the Dallas / Fort Worth area by email. I asked for two things: (1) A bottom-line quote; and, (2) No phone calls. Rusty Wallis was the ONLY dealer that responded quickly AND gave me what I asked for (a quote and no phone calls). By coincidence, thankfully, they also had the lowest price. I was hooked; but I used my next lowest quote (from David McDavid in Irving) as leverage to hold Rusty Wallis to their quoted price. All of the negotiating took place via email. I only showed up to the dealership to do the paperwork. (McDavid claimed they would beat any lower price I received, but the difference was so small it wasn't worth it to me. I appreciated the fact that Rusty Wallis honored my request for no phone calls. McDavid called me almost immediately after I emailed them.)

The only snag in the whole deal was Rusty Wallis didn't have the car we wanted the day we went to pick it up. They gave us a loaner and we picked our car up the next day.

    Hope this helps. Good luck!

This is how I go about getting a competitive price:
-Email every dealer within a 2 hour radius and state very specifically that you only want to do business via email.
-Do not give your real telephone number AND MAKE IT LOOK AS FAKE AS POSSIBLE. You don't want to make the dealer angry by letting him call a real person. I use 123-456-7890.
-You have to be responsive and check your own email as much as possible. The reason why dealers will give an internet customer a good deal is because they don't cost much manpower. We show up and pay on an already negotiated price.
You want to make it as easy as possible for the dealer to want to give you a good price. So what you need to do is write an email that includes EXACTLY what you are looking for color/Trim/Accessories, etc.
-Then you "spam all the dealers" by going to their websites and sending the same exact email.
-Create a list on paper or a spreadsheet that includes all the fees/taxes/dmv/accessories, everything possible all broken out. Lots of dealers will give you a great quote and then give you $1k extra in destination charges, document fees, and prep fees.
-When you get the emailed quotes back, make sure you follow up each and every quote with an email that says something like, "This includes ALL fees (destination, prep, document), right?" Then the dealer will usually elaborate. Not many dealers give you exactly what you ask for on the first try.
-Whenever speaking on the phone (which I avoid) always ask to speak to the "Internet sales manager".
-The reason this works is because you are getting so many dealers to compete...if you do the "legwork" you'll definitely get a good price.
Some dealers won't respond. Some dealers will, you are going to get a good price only based on how many dealers you contact, it's all about doing the legwork.
-Make sure you print out the emailed quote and bring it with you to the dealership, if they don't honor the price, leave.
-When you get to the dealership, ask for the "Internet Sales Manger or your email contact"

    Good luck!

It would make no sense whatever to have incentives on Civics.

Inventories are down to almost nothing at this point.

We are the largest volume dealer in nine states and we have ZERO EX AT sedans at this point and I think we have three in transit. Two of those three are already sold.

I think we may have three or four LX sedans in stock.
  • isellhondasisellhondas Member Posts: 20,342
In my long time experience, the people who give fake numbers or demand I give them a written quote are the people that are the least serious. I lose interest pretty quickly.

I agree with making your phony phone number look fake. Some people will pick a number at random. I know I have bothered a lot of people when I have called these phony numbers.

I have a suggestion too. Instead of going through the process of all of this work and pitting one dealer against others, why not just ask a family menber, co worker or friend for a referral?

If you see someone loading groceries into a new Civic, why not ask them where they bought it and how their experience was?

There is more to the purchase than the PRICE and you probably won't pay more anyway. We love referral business and we will go the extra mile for these customers.

    I love bologna!

I just scored a super deal on an Elantra and am currently in the process of scoring a great deal on a Civic for my sister! When I asked several Hyundai dealerships if they could beat the price I was quoted, I felt belittled, as though they were accusing me of lying about the offer I was given. In my mind that made me feel good about the deal I was getting - but they didnt need to make crude remarks about the dealer where I made the purchase. In this economy it is ALL ABOUT PRICE!

  • isellhondasisellhondas Member Posts: 20,342
Sedans outsell coupes about 10 to 1 so you may find more coupes out there then sedans now.

Just sold our LAST LX AT sedan. We are out now. same with EX sedan automatics. We have a handful arriving next week and most of those have been pre-sold.

    I'm really not enjoying this.

Love my LX but that mysterious oil leak yesterday has me bummed. Dealer could find nothing wrong either...weird! Did see some '08 models at the dealer though so South Florida still seems to have vehicles available. But what's up with the $795 Appearence Package...? Big rip off if you ask me. I even saw a couple of Fits sitting there also. Gotta feeling their prices are a bit out of whack and folks are just looking elsewhere.

    ignore user "isellhondas".

He is so biased. He acts as though he know all. He isn't knowledgeable about all areas of the country. People consistently are getting better deals than what he is saying is the market price.
  • marcusvaldesmarcusvaldes Member Posts: 4
Thanks to the earlier poster about Willett Honda. I went today (via internet sales) and got a brand spankin' new 2008 Civic LX Automatic for 18,100 out the door. Even beat my credit union on the rate. Didn't push me into buying warranties, etc. A very pleasant experience. Search some of the earlier posts for the salesmans name. They had an excellent selection to boot.
  • trdprerunnerdctrdprerunnerdc Member Posts: 52
"isellhondas" really is so biased. I feel so bad for people who believe the advice this guy gives. It just equates to higher prices paid by the consumer. He really should start his own forum somewhere, not here.
  • isellhondasisellhondas Member Posts: 20,342
Many, MANY times I have stated that things may be different in other parts of the country. this has nothing to do with "bias".

I do hear a lot and I understand inventories are pretty slim universally.

Out of curosity, I just pulled up a nearby state that must have 100 Honda Dealers and they sure didn't have many cars to sell either.

As I said, this isn't enjoyable for me. Not at all and I hope things get better fast!

I wanted to get everyone's opinion on how I did. I just picked up a new 2008 galaxy gray 5 speed EX coupe with wheel locks, mud gaurds and a trunk tray for $18042.88 plus tax and tag and a $599 dealer fee which brought the grand total to $19948.01. I purchased it today at Holler Honda in Orlando and the whole experiance was VERY quick and easy!!! They also offered me any SI in stock for $500 over dealer invoice. I chose the EX with fuel economy in mind and it seems like a very nice commuter car. I am going to be using my 2007, 12mpg. Escalade very little until the lease is up in Feb. 2009!!!
  • isellhondasisellhondas Member Posts: 20,342
You did fine. For the people who like coupes and five speeds there will probably be more price flexability because of demand.

SI's have never been huge sellers. They cost more, get worse gas mileage and require premimum. Deals can be had on these especially the sedans.
  • nortcronnortcron Member Posts: 3
Marcus, would you be able to give me more info about the salesperson and Willett Honda (in Morrow right?). I am about to buy the same car and have done tons of research but the price you got for it is great! I live about an hour away from the dealership, and if I can get the same exact deal you did, the drive will be worth it. Tell me everything you did (including what you did online). The last dealer I offered $18,000 to told me it is ABSOLUTELY impossible...uh huh. Thanks in advance and congrats on the awesome deal - just a little bit over MSRP, amazing.
  • shawshawshawshaw Member Posts: 7
I have been asking around the price (300+ miles radius from my city). The best quote came from a city 300+ away. It doesn't worth the trip ($850 less). So, I give a refundable $200 check to reserve a LX for $19350 (OTD). The car was supposed to arrive on 6/28 but didn't. The dealer told me it would be the beginning of Aug. After changing the color, I was told they will build this car next week and deliver it to town about 7/24. I don't think I am too thrilled about this. I think they just sold the car to other person. I also don't want to hear it won't arrive again for any reason.
Should I look for another dealer? Can I get my deposit check back?
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
Since the car didn't arrive when promised, there should be no reason you can't get your deposit back. Whether you start over with another dealer at this point is up to you. 2008 LX sedans (if that is what you're buying) are getting increasingly rare. With the present dealer, at least you have a commitment to deliver your car in about 10 days. You could always check with other dealers in the meantime; it's your time.
  • isellhondasisellhondas Member Posts: 20,342
Did the car you originally order come in eventually?

Was it your choice to pick a different color? If so, it's not their fault.

You can probably get your deposit check back but would you really want to re-start this process somewhere else?

I bought civic LX sedan AT at Honda on Grand
with $18,331 OTD. I think it was pretty good deal. I know there are people who bought it at under $18k OTD on this forum, but it will be hard to get that price these days in the state of illinois or indiana. (i requested email quote to almost 20 dealerships)

Honda on Grand is a good place. They may not provide the lowest quote at first, but just bring the cheapest internet price quote you got from other dealership, then they will match it. No haggling and no waste of time. I first visited Carr's Honda (because I heard some people got a good deal there on civic), but i end up buying in Honda on Grand because of my huge disappointment at Carr's Honda. This dealer was saying there is a mark up of plus $2000 on civic and he was trying to sell me at over $20k. It was a complete lie.

I recommend Honda on Grand for people live in illinois or indiana.
Don't go to Carr's Honda. You will waste your time and become angry.

I also considered O'Hare Honda as well, only because they had a civic color of my first choice. (their vehicle price was at MSRP) then later that day, the dealer told me and he said if he adds destination fee, it will be $19100....for the civic. (this is not OTD)

Seriously, don't get conned by these liars.

Hi I've been watching this forum for a while now and I just wanted to provide some help to all you car buyers. First off please do not listen to isellhondas, I find this comments very irritating and while based on some truth still just annoying. I work in in Honda's distribution offices and so wanted to say, while yes Civics are selling better than usual you can still get them for good prices (like those mentioned here) in almost any area. All it really takes is the ability to work a salesman and dealerships. I say because while I work and love Honda, I absolutely detest annoying car dealers and salesman. So yeah, just trust this forum and be patience. You will find your deals. Right now the best places to purchase cars from what I know would probably be in Inland southern California. I'm out.

You may not like what isell says however the points he brings up are true, certain markets do have lower inventories and thus don't need to offer low prices on a model that is moving well for them. Bottom line is inventory and market drive the price, if you want that vehicle bad enough you have to go where the prices listed here are and not in your back yard.
  • mrcoolguy209mrcoolguy209 Member Posts: 29
You can contact Sylvia @ El Cerrito Honda - it's the person I used for Civic LX purchase.

While what you say may be true in certain parts of the country, he attempts to discredit those of us in high competition areas that are getting good quotes by saying that it's the exception. It sounds as though there are quite a few "exceptions" around the country.

He needs to quit giving the same old junk about supply and demand every time.
