I priced all over southern california from San Diego to LA to San Bernardino when I bought my 08 LX Sedan Auto. Hardin Honda in Anaheim ended up being the best deal (they beat my best deal by $100).

How much was your OTD price?
  • thavornthavorn Member Posts: 20
You would probably get a good deal on 08 but I'm interested 09. What's you OTD price? Thanks

Just wanted to know if this was a fair deal - I'm in the northeast NY tri-state area:

2009 Honda Civic DX-VP Sedan, manual transmission
    Invoice: $14,992
    MSRP: $16,155

Out the door price I negotiated: $17,500
    This is the approximate breakdown:
    $15,275 for the car
    $670 destination
    $1,100 Tax
    $250 state fee for tags
    $150 doc fee
    $7 tire tax

    Any thoughts are welcome.

What rates are people seeing for financing. Now that Toyota has cut their finance rate to 0% on most of their cars, I am wondering if Honda may follow suit. I would like to know where people are financing their cars, and the rate they are getting.
    Thanks.
  • sinsdsinsd Member Posts: 46
    Via Honda financing:

    60 months = 5.49%

    If you want a Toyota. . .

Just bought my atomic blue EX from Tysons corner Honda in VA for $20600 OTD, Got it @4.99% for 60 months after paying some 20% down (I'll be paying off the car in 3 years or so anyway)

Just picked up new 2009 Civic LX Sport from White Plains Honda
Excellent experience, in and out in 40 minutes. Paperwork and financing done before I arrived. Pretty much sign and drive. Thanks Walter and Lisa

    Civic LX Sport
    Fogs and Splash Guards
    Polished Metal Metallic
Paid $19954 plus Tax and Title

Last week I got 4.99 for 60 on a 09 civic. Dealer was trying to put 5.99 after I was told by the sales guy that it was 4.9. He said that was just for the 08 models. I pushed the paperwork back at him and set I don't play those games; fix the rate and back to 4.99 or I will leave. My credit unions were right around that as well so it is not anything they are going too far out of their way for. Just a funny time for all loans last week though with the position we are in with the economy.

I'll bet there is a 3.9% deal on the way soon after the bailout passed. But then again who knows. The civic moves well. I have waited all year working various dealers and found that they are not hurting to sell this model.
  • needasedanneedasedan Member Posts: 4
that color is awesome. My wife wanted Royal blue and that is what we got. However, the Polished Metal Metallic was my vote.
  • joconnorjoconnor Member Posts: 26
Thanks, I wish I could post picks here. I posted on 8th Gen civic site if you want to see.

How much is the on the road price in Baltimore?DC area? I'd like to try the LX. Do you have any idea about the price?

Could anyone recommend the best (based on your experience) Honda dealership in San Francisco Bay area?

Edmunds is showing TMV price of $18,230, whereas carsdirect.com is giving $17,471...could anyone kindly share his/her experience buying a new 2008 Honda Civic LX 4dr sedan in any of the dealerships around SF Bay area?...I was wondering if i could get a better deal in case i am willing to pay the entire amount rather than use financing or it is better to mention this at the end?

I am interested in the base model, do not need navigation or other bells and whistles...just want to survey what was OTD price people paid for 2008 Honda Civiv LX 4dr in SF Bay area this month or month before...thanks in advance
  • cuysecocuyseco Member Posts: 45
I paid 18,900 OTD in Dallas Texas for a 08 Civic LX sedan AT last month.
  • sinsdsinsd Member Posts: 46
I think "OTD" is misleading. I mean, does that not include anything extra? Warranties? Etc. I would rather know the negotiated price FOR THE CAR (including destination) and less anything else.

BTW, my recent experience with carsdirect.com is their pricing appears to be DEflated on the website. Also, I happen to like haggling for price with a human and not leave it to someone else to deliver my car.
  • dengludenglu Member Posts: 12
Thanks for the response. You have a point that carsdirect.com pricing seems to be deflated, as Bluebook also suggests that the average price people pay for the car is $18,246.00 with the range being $18,064.00-$18,428.00 (edmunds TMV price is $18,430), whereas carsdirect seems to be well below that, so probably, not really attainable in reality...my understanding is that theres is a basic 36-month warranty which is a part of the basic package...am i wrong? So is that right to assume that OTD = price FOR THE CAR (incl. destination)+warranty? or usually when people mention OTD price it excludes the warranties? It is my current understanding is that when bluebook or edmunds show the price people tend to pay for a given model DOES include the basic 3-year warranty, but i maybe wrong on this one....

i am looking for standard package with standard specs, just wanna get a handle on what is the average price people are paying at this moment for 2008 Honda Civic LX 4-dr sedan with a standard package in SF Bay area (by standard i mean specs mentioned at http://www.kbb.com/kbb/NewCars/Specifications/2008_Honda_Civic_Sedan_223770.aspx- ) .

    Thanks in advance

we just bought an '08 lx auto for 17.2K + ttl. so, for an '09 this is a great deal.
  • dengludenglu Member Posts: 12
this sounds like a great deal indeed...where was it? was anything in particular that you were able to negotiate that allowed you to bring down the price that much? any details are appreciated...i am thinking about getting 08 LX AT 4-dr (live in SF) and willing to pay cash upfront, so i was wondering if that would help me in my bargaining with the dealer....
  • ralphwiggum1ralphwiggum1 Member Posts: 31
Where I bought the '08 Civic LX:
i live in the bay area also, but i negotiated the '08 lx deal for my parents who live in richmond, va.

    Strategy:
my strategy was probably similar to others on this website--i just asked a bunch of dealers (local and a bit further away) to beat my previous lowest price until...
as far as buying with cash, i'm not sure if that helps or not, although we did buy cash.
you might try emailing dealers in socal, just to see if it might be worthwhile to buy the car there. or, if you get a great deal from one of them, you can use that price to leverage a better deal locally--this is what i did/do.

Best Honda Dealer in the Bay Area:
last year, i bought a new accord in the bay area and thought i got a good deal through grace honda in san bruno (23.5K for a V-6 with NAV). they even beat the socal dealerships i shopped around at and overall, it was a pretty good buying experience.
also, i think i remember a dealership in the east bay had good prices, but i don't remember which dealer it was.

Worst Honda Dealers (at least in pricing):
ANDERSON HONDA--probably the worst prices i found in the...world. ok, maybe not the world, but...
    Stevens Creek--Meh!
Mike Anderson--priced like they're in burlingame. oh...they are in burlingame!

    Any other questions?

Thanks for the fast reply and advice. My understanding is that the current deal you mentioned (17.2+TTL) you obtained from one of the dealerships in Richmond, Va., is that right? so together with TTL (5% sales tax in VA of 17.2=$860) what did the OTD price come out to be? around $18.06K? I was thinking initially that this is the deal you got somewhere in NorCal. My impression is that in norcal the situation might be different (higher prices).

Your suggestion on just getting quotes from a bunch of dealers (especially your idea of asking for quotes from socal dealerships) and then using the best price to leverage locally is definitely helpful...i will surely try that. I will also check into San Bruno Honda and dealerships in east bay. any other advice is appreciated....
  • ralphwiggum1ralphwiggum1 Member Posts: 31
VA tax is 3%--OTD was 17.8K or so.

Here's another option for people in the Bay Area--Cartelligent.com. It's a car buying service that charges $300-500 to find you the best deal and has a guarantee on the lowest price. A friend bought his car (an Audi A3) that way--it wasn't a crazy steal, but it was a good deal and he didn't have to do any of the leg work. You tell them the specifics and give them about a day to search for it. When they find it, they let you know the price and you can accept or deny it. One catch is that they can't get cars that are in super high demand--eg, Prius, Mini Coopers, etc. Civics shouldn't be a problem though, so I think it's definitely worth looking into.

Disclosure: I don't work in the auto industry, so I have no affiliation (which includes my family and friends) with any of the aforementioned companies/dealerships. Just trying to keep the buying process fair.

I have got 2008 Honda Civic LX Coupe Auto for $16,259 + ttl. This was in Boston on Oct. 11th. However, this was a car that was standing in the dealer's salon, so it's somewhat a demo, it has 20 miles only. The bargaining process took about an hour.

Is the price I paid should be considered good currently?
  • civictorycivictory Member Posts: 73
I'd say that's excellent! That's almost exactly what I paid in Dallas for a '08 Civic LX Sedan MT last December. If they threw in any of the over-priced "extras" (tint, trunk tray, etc.), then you really made out!
  • dengludenglu Member Posts: 12
Seems like a great deal...btw, what was the OTD price (including ttl)? What is the tax rate in Boston that you had to pay? In the process of your negotiation did you happen to see what the comparable prices were for 2008 Honda Civic Sedan (4-dr)LX Auto? Were they cheaper than Coupe or less? Thanks.
  • steven39steven39 Member Posts: 636
vita,i think 16,259.00 is a excelent price for the civic considering the fact that i recently traded in the same car 08 civic lx coupe with auto for a 09 mitsubishi lancer and i got 16,00.00 for the civic as a trade-in..my civic had 3500 miles on it when i traded it in over this past labor day weekend.don't know how they made money on that deal especially when i am reading about people purchasing 08 civics lx for around the same price with 0 miles..
  • vitakhvitakh Member Posts: 5
    guys thanks for your replies.

    denglu,
I actually have paid $16,000 for the car, + $259 as "doc. prep. fees", $800 as Mass tax (5%) and about $60-$80 for title. The prices for same LX sedan are about $200 more, but my car was probably "special" (they have marked is as "clearance") and I guess the actual prices for 4-door sedan might be about $600 or such more (after an extensive bargaining).
  • dmarcus48dmarcus48 Member Posts: 139
It's funny you say that because I can usually beat cardirect.com prices. I've done it with the last four cars I've bought. What I do is email (email only, never go there) four or five high volume dealers in my area. I tell them what model and color I'm interested in, tell them NOT to call me (many times the "instaquote requires a phone number" and ask for a break down of all fee and charges for the car. I'm currently looking at a 09 Civic EX-L w/navi for my wife and I've been offered the car for invoice from a dealer than I've already bought two cars from (so I know they're not low balling me). I'm really just waiting for Honda to lower their finance charges and I'll buy it. I will say that it also depends on the car you're after. A hybrid would go for msrp, same with a FIT, and I think a coupe would go for more than a sedan. Supply and demand.
  • sinsdsinsd Member Posts: 46
dmarcus48 - do you know of a way to KNOW what finance charges are at Honda, without going to a dealer or sales/finance dude?

I am ordering a Civic LX-S - the deal won't happen until the car gets here, of course, and that's not for up to 60 days. It would be nice to know what's happening with rates.

btw, would LOVE to have the EX-L ($$$)!

Bought today in Burlington, NJ for $100 under invoice plus TT

    Cloth seats, no Nav

    $22,345 (incl. dest)
    1,340 6% NJ Tax
    48 Transfer tag
    $23,733 OTD

    Good deal?

Look forward to 45 MPG and not in a Prius like everyone else getting that mileage... :P

    Hi,
first post here. Just was given an offer for an '09 CIVIC DX-VP auto for $16,296 plus T&T. This price includes the $670 dest. no extras, just mats.

Live just north of New York City. Appears to be just under invoice. Is this a good price, should I continue shopping?

BTW, he also had an 08 LX sedan auto for $16,800 ( I think this includes dest )
  • vitakhvitakh Member Posts: 5
Who knows, prices may go below the invoice 5%... 10%... 15%... ?%...

I hope it will not happen, because total mess may follow. So buy now - catch the nice moment prices, save the money and the USA.

    Good luck to all !

Okay I'm finding a BUNCH of left over Civic Si Sedans. I'm trading off buying any
Accord vs. the Civic Si. Practical vs. FUN!!!! LOL!!! I've found good pricing on the Accord but they seem to be holding the line more on the left over Si's.... Even with 2009's on the ground.

I've got one lined up with Nav for about 400 under invoice? 21,400 on a 23730 msrp and invoice of 21,881.

    Good deal? :confuse:

Anybody buy a 2008 Civic Si Sedan and get a good deal? ;)
  • transmissiontransmission Member Posts: 3
I got my 09 Civic DX-VP MANUAL TRANSMISSION at invoice: $15,550 including destination, +TTL, bringing the total to a hair over $17,000. I think that if you are paying invoice, you should grab it. My guess is that these dealers and salespeople need to prove that they can move cars. I hope they are getting some kind of bonus at the end of the month for number of cars they sell - but at this point, it could just be an effort to shine in what seems to be a very deep recession.

2 weeks ago, I couldn't negotiate anywhere near this price. In the past 5 days, everything changed. Also, I think it balances out with the APR for the loan... Honda isn't offering a deal on this for Civics (like Toyota is), so I think that the lower price for the car is where you can make up for this.
  • jmcbmwjmcbmw Member Posts: 85
Purchased a 2009 Civic Hybrid w/ Nav yesterday for $500 over invoice. Was offered this price by two dealers in the San Gabriel Valley. Some other dealers are still trying to play the "selling for sticker" game while standing there surrounded by 08 and 09 Hybrids and empty showrooms. Could have pushed for $200 over which was what another dealer offered me on an 09 EX-Nav but it seemed fair and it was a pleasant experience. Anyway, very quick and straight forward deal at Sierra Honda in Monrovia. Hope we like the Hybrid. It's a bit strange feeling but such an interesting car which makes it fun! Good luck out there!
  • chutistchutist Member Posts: 33
What were the email quotes running?

I'm seeing invoice or below on the Gas Civic's and Accords.
  • jmcbmwjmcbmw Member Posts: 85
Hi, As my post stated, $200 over invoice for Civic and $500 over invoice for Civic Hybrid. Although I must state that strangely many dealers did not even respond to my internet inquiry.
  • 1jacob1jacob Member Posts: 13
Here are a couple of links to West Hill Honda in Bremerton Wa.
The MSRP seems very high to me. I called in and the MSRP over the phone is also very high compared to the real Honda MSRP.

It does not seem to be based on the added features. I asked on the phone for a MSRP for a civic EX-L 4 door automatic WITH NO ADDED STUFF, and was told $26700. The real MSRP is around $22555.

Am I missing something? I realize that dealers add stuff and often charge a lot more then it is worth. I also know that the real MSRP is printed on the window. But is it even legal to misrepresent the MSRP on a on going basis? That dealership and another one right next to it (Toyota owned by the same owners) are the only ones I can find that consistently do such stuff, and on significant number of thier cars. See for yourself:

    For Civic:

    http://www.westhillshonda.com/inventorydisplay.aspx?brw=new-honda-civic-sedan&s=- new

    For Accord:

    http://www.westhillshonda.com/inventoryDisplay.aspx?s=new_detail&year=2008&make=- Honda&model=Accord%20Sdn&inv=391&vin=1HGCP26828A165346&total=54&pos=3&current=6&- size=10

You can click on other models. Chose a model then click on "inventory".
  • nshahzadnshahzad Member Posts: 14
Wow that's crap. They think you're stupid. I would call them out on it, and just goto another dealer and not even bother.
  • 1jacob1jacob Member Posts: 13
Of course I would not deal with them. I discovered thet inflate the prices of MSRP while in their lot. A sales guy is writing up the documents, and if you do not pay attention, they make a "mistake" of MANY THOUSAND on the MSRP figure. The "mistake" was huge so I caught it, but I could have been screwed if they only raised it by say $500-$1000. By the time you add the shipping and couple of extras, a trusting person can be cheated. My guess is that they do it and get away with it many times, but I am not in a position to be sure. I wonder how far consumer protection goes. Is it considered fraud?

I did bring it to thier attention, and they do not seem too concerned or willing to cooperate. In fact, I called Honda USA, customer service, and they did not seem to care either. I asked: are you not interested in protecting your end customer? The guy thought it was an issue for me to deal with, not Honda. He said that Honda COULD call the sales manager, but it is better if I do, they are not going to.

I think the customer service guy at Honda has a screwed up judgment. A dealer is misrepresenting thier MSRP, which is the suggested value DECLARED by Honda.

What do you think? Again, is it legal to alter the MSRP on advertising materials and on the phone? Does anyone know? Does anyone care?
  • ruking1ruking1 Member Posts: 19,826
From what I can tell NO!

The point where you have to be careful is when you review and (especially) sign the sales/lease agreement (you know that 8.5 x seemingly 22 in long triplicate thin document) . I don't know of one document that says plus/minus MSRP, plus/minus invoice etc. Everyone I have ever seen are specific numbers. So for example doc fees can vary wildly and is infinitely negotiable!. Indeed you can put the KIBOSH on a deal by not agreeing to (whatever)r doc fees.
  • mplshondadlrmplshondadlr Member Posts: 409
"Again, is it legal to alter the MSRP on advertising materials and on the phone? Does anyone know? Does anyone care?"

MSRP is a suggested price. A dealer can advertise what ever price they want - plus or minus from MSRP. The exception would be if there is a group of dealers that co-op advertising. In that case, you're not allowed to advertise anything other then national promotions and MSRP.
  • 1jacob1jacob Member Posts: 13
I undersatnd that a dealer can advertise whatever price they want, sell over MSRP, under MSRP, over invoice and so on.

I understand that a dealer is NOT BOUND to sell at MSRP.

HOWEVER: the MSRP is a number that is set by the manufacture, not the dealer.
It is the ONLY number providing some REFERENCE POINT for the deal.

For example, if you search the price on Edmunds, you are given "what others are paying", but ALSO what the MSRP is as a reference. If you go to say Consumer reports, you get a basic idea about the car price range from the MSRP.

If someone is putting in your head a referance, an expectation for a "starting price", and it is inflated by some thousands of dollars, you are being compromised.

So is the practice by the West Hill Honda and West Hill Toyota legal? I mean, is it consumer fraud?
  • 1jacob1jacob Member Posts: 13
Here is a different way to say it:

A dealer can set any price they want, OK. But when someone is stating the MSRP they are stating what THE MANUFACTURE's suggested price is. So altering what the manufactures says is a wrong thing to do. How can a dealer calim that the Honda suggested price is anything other then what Honda's suggested price is? Is that not consumer fraud?

I went to other sites, and could not find anyone else "practice" that sort of a thing. It seems to me that Bremerton West Hill Honda and West Hill Toyota are the only ones (same owner).
  • bearcrkrdbearcrkrd Member Posts: 167
Drive over there. Tell them you are not looking to buy right now, but just want to browse. The price is inflated due to the Second Sticker. It is Titled 'Market Adjustment', and it adds $2,000 - $3,500 to the MSRP. ALL Puget Sound Honda Dealerships have them, but I do not know if they all include the markup in their online prices. I think not.....
That's the point they would start at. After a tense negotiating session you would walk out of there with a Civic at the actual MSRP. A real bargain.. ;)
That's (MSRP) on the first sticker, and includes Delivery.. That sticker should be identical at every Honda dealer in the whole USA. Good luck!

PS - check the Edmunds sales $$ for that Zip Code. That's right here on this site, under New Cars.

The Monroney sticker is required by federal law to be displayed on the vehicle and requires certain information to be posted on it. The dealer can add additional items but certain key dollar values must be posted.

    Make & Model

    Serial or Identification Numbers

    The final assembly point

The name, and the location of the place of business, of the dealer to whom it is to be delivered

The method of transportation used in making delivery of such automobile, if driven or towed from final assembly point to place of delivery

The Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP or "sticker price") of the base vehicle

The MSRP of optional equipment installed on the base vehicle

The transportation charges for delivery of the vehicle to the dealer from the manufacturer

The TOTAL MSRP of all the above.

The EPA mileage estimates are also normally included on this sticker

See the followling link for reference.

    Hi guys,

Lowest quote I got is 16990, second lowest is 17066. I think they are before TTL and hopefully they include destination fee. I am kinda surprised by these numbers; thought it would be higher in Nor Cal. Is there something I don't know going on?

Edit: It's probably not include destination charge... So are those good price after 670 destination charge?
  • fx2526fx2526 Member Posts: 1
    Hey all,

I got a quote for 20,991.00 + TTL. Or 22,864.32 OTD w/ TN tax. Is this a good deal? Also another in GA for 20,754.00 + TTL, 499 is in document fee's.
For the people in the NW, I believe your from Seattle. All the Honda dealers in the NW charge that $2,000 fee. If you don't mind driving, drive down 3 hours to Wilsonville, OR. When I lived in Portland, they didnt charge that fee and advertised it. double check though.
