May 4th is the last day for incentives. I need to buy lx auto sedan in the next two - three week.
  • tyhd91tyhd91 Member Posts: 10
    model: dx-vp automatic sedan
    Final OTD price: $15,890

    should i buy it?

and OTD means the final final price right? including sales tax and title+registration?
i would also have to come in today to buy it at that price.

OTD means whatever they want it to mean..

Yeah, I was wondering about this too. Given the economy, I wouldn't be surprised if they just renew the incentive. Every so often I see a Toyota commercial about $1k cash back for a corolla, "but hurry, offer ends this month!" And that offer's "ended" six times already.

Who knows though... Honda may be running their promotions differently; and everyone has been cutting production, so eventually inventory will drop enough that they no longer have to run the incentive
  • warmonkedwarmonked Member Posts: 7
Also, they ALWAYS want you to buy today. They're afraid to let you get away! Just remember when you get there, if they jerk you around, just say NO and leave! What're they going to do? Kick you in the nuts and spit in your face?
  • kyfdxkyfdx Moderator Posts: 267,612
    Well.. I hope not! ;)

Salespeople don't want you to leave, because most shoppers don't come back.. Even if it is irritating, I can't fault them for it..

Now, if they are obnoxious, they are sealing their own fate..

I had a customer that feels like you do totally outsmart himself.

I told him that most of our incentives on Civics would end April 30th. I gave him a great price but it wasn't good enough for him.

He shopped my number everywhere and I know he didn't believe me when I told him the price would change substancially on May 1st.

    He believes me now!

Word is that incentives will be cut substancially.

tjchin, I am in the market for a new Civic. Can I ask what dealership in MD you bought yours from?
  • jhouston09jhouston09 Member Posts: 5
    Hi, isellhondas,

I am not surprised to see dealers begin to visit this forum often and often. Why don't you show us what number you offered him? you may also kindly post the options for that offer.

By the way, honda's sales in April dropped by 25%. Without the money incentives they offered in the middle of April, about 04/15, Honda's sales would definitely dropped more. By saying so, I would wait and see how the market winds for Honda. So even if Honda does not immediately offer incentives at the beginning of this month, they would likely do in the bottom half of the month. At least, we have the summer just beginning, and I doubt Honda will sit tight without doing better marketing.
  • chas0215chas0215 Member Posts: 40
When do you expect Honda to officially announce its incentives, if any, for May? Do you think we might know something on 5/5 (the day after current customer incentives end)? Thanks.
  • warmonkedwarmonked Member Posts: 7
It's worth noting that the 25% drop is april 08 to april 09. And this is all vehicles combined. For civics, the drop was 23%.

The trouble with incentives is the fact that people expect them to continue or get even better. It's like being on heroin and Honda knows this.

My customer was one of these guys who lives with the constant fear that he just might spend 50 dollars more than someone else may have. I told him that the incentives were ending but he decided to wait to see if they would get even better.

Like I said, he outsmarted himself.

you are right jhouston09 many sales people are watching this site
Honda does not give them a lot of info so they have to learn from their customers

I think we will see quite a few of incentives summer. I see already drop in price for civics of few thousand and more to come.

    To isellhondas,
you are right mr salesman, customer is very educated and smart those days and you will have start respecting/appreciating that fact. Many dealers are starting to realize that and some are reacting diferently than others.

As far as incenitives I dont see how Honda can get rid of inventories sutting on lots without droping prices like Toyotas and GMs. (Just drive by HOnda delars lot and see boaring salesman sturring out of windows on their lots full of cars). I believe we will see very drastic price reductions in near future! By the way Civicis is a nice car but it remains to be just a civic, It is not a BMW sprinkled with a holy water - it is just a civic - inexpensive basic tranportation with its own problems and discomforts. - And HOnda perfectly understands that but some salesmans are trying to promote civic like it is best things after loaf of bread.

When you byuing civic now - solicit responce from few larger diealrships, be patient and firm and you get a deal of your life well below "invoice". SOme larger places have huge hiden incentives now after they sell so many cars.

By the way dont hesitate to ask your dealr to split your sales man comissions - realtor are doing this all the time now. Good luck and keep this post going! God bless!

I'm not sure what exactly you are referring to by this statement but my 2004 Civic currently has just over 200,000 miles on it, I have replaced routine maintenance items, (brakes, tires, wiper blades etc), and that is it! It has always started and never given me one minute of trouble. I just replaced it with a 2009 EX and gave the 2004 to my daughter. If you think BMWs are better than Hondas you should check to see which car is higher rated according to customer surveys.

"customer is very educated and smart those days"

I guess you're right. My customer was so smart he cost himself 1000.00.

" Just drive by HOnda delars lot and see boaring salesman sturring out of windows on their lots full of cars"

Oh, I don't know, I put in about 24 hours this past weekend and was so busy I never took a break.
  • chas0215chas0215 Member Posts: 40
According to Edmund's, I thought the $1000 cash incentive to the dealer was only for the Accord? Civic was between $500 and $750 depending on the model?

    Here is your out-the-door pricing:
    19,856 Sale price
    1,191.36 6% Tax
    202.65 Title and Tag Fees

    21,250.01 Out-the-door Total

    can i do better?
  • abchin486abchin486 Member Posts: 78
There is a difference between a consumer who is smart and a consumer who is dumb. I'm sorry, but the consumer that rejected your deal was neither dumb or smart, he was just miseducated. A dumb consumer would have listened to the salesman. Your "great deal" is great for you, but a smart consumer would question it. What figures did you give him? Do you work at the dealer who said that my price of 17.1K for an EX 2 door auto was not possible, yet you called me back 2 weeks later and told me it was? Then you proceed to try and miseducate consumers even more by giving fluff about how Mazdas are really Fords. Do you really think it would have been smart of him to trust the salesman and believe that the rebate would end when you have giving other comsumers fluff like that?
  • abchin486abchin486 Member Posts: 78
A Civic is a Civic. It's a commuter car and a very good one. To think it is anything more is laughable. Its main competition is the Mazda 3 (handles better) and the Corolla (more comfy) and to a lesser extent the VW rabbit. The Civic is the mix of all of those worlds and it gets the job done...but to compare it to a BMW is funny (the engine comparison alone is not even fair). BTW...I have known people who have had BMWs with well over 200K and have done minimal maintanance.
  • isellhondasisellhondas Member Posts: 20,342
I didn't say my customer was either smart or dumb. I'm saying he outsmarted himself.

You are using the word "you" here and I have done none of those things.

I think so. I bought for about $1000 lower in April in IL.

It is true. It's also true they sure got it right. The road noise is awful. I imagine every 10 years older you are it's worse. I probably wouldn't have minded as much when I was young. Now it is about more than reliability. Still, I remember my test drive of maybe 2.5 miles, one mile of which was on the freeway in front of the place at 60 mph. My mind was made up before we got off the freeway. It felt like a car should feel. Almost like rear wheel drive, to me. I instantly was comfortable with the dashboard layout and simple interior. Gas was just below $5 a gallon, too, which helped a bunch. In retrospect an EX would have been preferable, but they weren't anywhere near as low priced as now, so I went with the LX right from the start. I'm happy, and paid ahead more than a year. I thought my $17,400 w/Destination, but before Tax, for a brand new '08 LX was great the end of last May. Most of you on this thread should be tickled pink!!!! Enjoy, I have.
  • dtolmandtolman Member Posts: 3
Are the April incentives still in place? I got it for 19,000 (including destination) in late April, but that was with the April manufacturer-to-dealer incentive in place. If they dropped the incentive, then that might be a good price.
  • sweetness66sweetness66 Member Posts: 3
just found out there was an additional $1000 incentive that expired may 1st... as of my quotes (from today) there was only the $750 incentive which expires today... i think i'll take my chances with the may incentives. here's to hoping!

I do love my Civic but I have to admit that it's had more warranty issues than our Mazda3 ever did and the Mazda still runs circles around the Civic. My last Corolla also had less warranty issues and was a quieter, smoother riding car. My kids Versa rides much smoother than my Civic and the seats are better cushioned and I can slide into them without dropping in as I do with the Civic. This time, I had to try a Honda product and it's been great, except for the warranty issues. When I'm ready to buy again...hopefully not for at least 5 to 6 years from now, I'll check out all the econocars from overseas and never again buy a 1st year model.

Do I regret my Civic choice...no way! But the warranty issues have just shown me that it's no better or no worse than other cars in this segment.

    Hey guys,
My brother and I are both looking to buy 2009 honda civics (sedan & coupe) and I was wondering if there would be a chance that some dealerships give some sort of discount for buying 2 cars at the same time?
    Thanks
  • sinsdsinsd Member Posts: 46
Sandman- to what warranty issues are you referring?
  • mmcmmmcm Member Posts: 2
I just wanted to give everyone another point of reference for 2009 Civic pricing.
I bought a 2009 Civic sedan EX-L with NAV yesterday (May 4th) in MD for $21,463. This price did not include taxes/tags/and title because they vary by state and I didn't want to complicate the price for those who live elsewhere.
The car did come with the optional but what is really the standard appearance package (mud flaps, body stripes, wheel locks) and I got the all-weather rubber floor mats thrown in the deal.
I guess you can really never be sure if you got the best deal but I felt like I did my homework and got a price less than the Edmund's TMV price. After all was said and done the salesman told me that their total profit on the deal was $160. This may have been just a "make'm feel good" comment......and it did. I got the car for $2000 less than the offer I received from the other local dealer I was working with which also gave me the indication that it wasn't a bad price.
Hope this helps someone make a choice but May incentives might be up or down I don't think anyone knows yet!
  • abchin486abchin486 Member Posts: 78
if you feel hapy, that is all that matters. You got what you, so just be happy. Out of curiousity, what was the sticker? Honestly, I never thought a Civic could eclipse the 21K mark....
  • sweetness66sweetness66 Member Posts: 3
anyone know what official may incentives are yet? i've gotten some new quotes from the dealers today so i know they know, but they're not posted on this site yet...
  • Sandman6472Sandman6472 Member Posts: 7,238
    Here they are:

    (1) Lug Bug issue
    (2) Water pump Pully issue
    (3) New Rear Control Arms/Rear Struts
    (4) New Battery
    (5) New Sensor In ABS(I think))
    (6) Rear Tires Wore Prematurely (got some $ back from Honda)).

Think that's about it. Most were small issues granted, but five unscheduled stops at the dealer within 2.75 years isn't what I expected from a Honda product bought new with 10 miles on the clock. Still a great car but I think the effect of the Honda kool-aid is wearing off now. I'd bet the '09 models have all these things fixed already pre-production but not what I wanted or expected simply put. Like I've already said, our Mazda 3s has been bullet proof compared to the LX and was about the same price just for the car & destination.

Personally, if I were in the market now, I'd look at all the offerings, then make a decision. I really only looked at the Civic and the S40, which is really a Mazda 3 underneath and more $ up front. Good luck shopping!

Very unusual. I've never heard of anything like this...seriously.

Guess that's why cars have warranties?

Of course, Honda didn't make that battery or the tires but even those items are pretty rugged. My next door neighbor changed the battery in the 1996 Accord I sold him new after ten years! I kept telling him to replace it before he got stranded but he just had to see how much he could get out of it! He found out one dark night in the Boeing parking lot!

I've seen tires on Hondas go 70,000 miles when people rotate them

What the heck is a "Lug Bug"? :confuse:
  • irizeririzer Member Posts: 6
I got the same exact car (ex-l sedan auto with Navi) for 20,480 before tax, tags, & doc. I guess still expensive for a Civic. Glad I got the EX-L. Probably could have lived w/o the Navi although I wanted the bluetooth feature which only comes with the Navi. Now I am thinking I should have gotten the new 2010 Mazda 3. I was real close to getting that, but my last Honda was so reliable and a few people steered me away from the Mazda 3. Also I thought the styling was a bit iffy. Anyway the Civic is my car now. No major complaints except that it could use more bass in the sound system.

I guess I would lose a lot of money if I was to sell it now and buy something else :)

BTW not this is a Mazda forum, but the discounts on the 2010 sucked. Top end Mazda 3 was coming in close to 25K. Pretty expensive if you ask me. Even though it has nice features, it is still in the same class as the Civic. Probably consider something bigger if I am willing to spend 25K. Just justifying my purchase :)

Even though Bass isn't that great, the IPod integration with the Navi headunit is very nice. Almost bought the Coupe just for the better audio, although I like the practicality and the looks of the sedan more.
  • isellhondasisellhondas Member Posts: 20,342
Recently, I had a customer buy a Civic NAVI just because of the Bluetooth. He even told me he could care less about the NAVI.

I suggested he simply go to Costco and spend 49.00 for a Motorola earpiece and save a ton of money but, no, he would have no part of that.

I just don't understand. I have an earpiece that I rarely use and it works suprisingly well. I just don't believe in using a cellphone instead of concentrating on driving but that's me.

Garmin now makes a pretty nifty portable NAVI system with Bluetooth built in for around 200.00. I couldn't believe how much these have improved ssince the early units that were a lot more expensive!

    Marketing Support-
Civic Coupe (all trim levels)- $1000
    Civic EX/EX-L/Si Sedan- $750
    Civic DX/LX/LX-S Sedan- $500
    Effective 05/05/09 thru 07/06/09

They also have 2.9% APR for 24/36 months or 3.9% for 60 months for "well qualified customers". It can be combined with cash to dealer (aka- marketing support). Also valid thru 07/06/09.

I wonder what sort of deal I could get on an EX Coupe with Automatic??? MSRP is $20,775, Invoice $19,185 and Edmunds TMV is $18,517...I haven't had a 2-door vehicle in 10+ years, but I think I could handle it if was a better deal (not to mention the 350-watt stereo system that only comes in the Coupe)!

While you are right, I really wanted everything integrated. I will use the navigation occasionally. Also the Bluetooth is nice to have built in. I didn't want to have to run wires around and I didn't want to have to worry about keeping things charged. Also it is nice to get into the car and have my phone immediately paired. Overall it is a bit excessive, but it is partially just for the neat factor. Was it worth the extra dough, probably not, but I am glad I have it.

That being said, I love the leather. EX-L. That was worth it in my opinion. The interior is very nice.

  • abchin486abchin486 Member Posts: 78
ABS and ABS tire problems occur in all cars. Infact, i would be surprised to find an OEM tire today that would last, especially in the economy segment. They are making everything better, but it has to come at the expense of something and tires are something that you can easily get rid of. So why not just have a name brand make (or rebadge) a cheap tire? My mazda 3's tires wer ehorrible and they only lasted 25K. My gf's Corolla...I am only expecting 30K.

That said, toyota and honda cannot keep this reliability up for ever. The have to fall sometime because it's a battle between tweaking what they have perfected...but what they have perfected for so many years now costs money and eventually starts to to eat away at the bottom line. Times are a changing...

So far I really like the looks of this car. I am going to make a rather long trip to go out test drive...thought I'd ask for some advice before I go take a look...is this a good price? Should I keep looking?

    Thanks,

At this price you can buy a brand new 2009 Civic EX. If you can't get the price of the 2 year old car down to about 13K, buy a brand new for $16.8K.

Other advantage of buying new car:
Even though your upfront price for new car will be $4,000 higher, but your interest rate will be half compared to the interest rate for used car. Over a 48 month loan, you'll save about $2k on new car, This further narrows the 'total' price gap between used and new. But if you are paying cash for this used car then the above advantage won't apply to you.

But if I had a bag full of cash I would still finance a new car at 2.9% interest, invest the cash in stock market and in 4 years that would give me enought yield to buy a car for cash just from the money earned off of $16k. I did something totally crazy recently along these lines and have had amazing results... Perhaps you can also benefit. Just my $0.02

    Hi - I'm with crazyfly - see my post from a few weeks ago - #8317 ...
I was originally looking at a 07 ex with about 21000 miles - then realized that for just a bit more, and a lower finance rate through Honda (3.9%), I could get a brand new 09 EX - which is what I did. Good luck!

Hey guys, is an OTD quote around $17,800 good?
The incentives and rebates are not the same as it was in April so all the dealers raised their prices. So if anybody can let me know if this is pretty good or not.
Also, do they usually have good sells for cars on memorial day weekend?
  • sweetysoniasweetysonia Member Posts: 7
mllewellyn, I dunno if itz just a rumour but I heard this May the prices would go down and I honestly think taking this economy into consideration OTD should be 17k to 17.2
