exhaust fluid

This truck (Duramax diesel/Allison xmsn) uses 5 gallons of a urea solution injected into the exhaust system to reduce unwanted emissions. It looks like it uses the 5 gallons about every 2000 miles. I would like to be able to mix my own solution as it is VERY expensive to purchase it from GM. Also the fluid has a shelf life of only 90 days. Can you provide or direct me to a detailed procedure for obtaining the chemicals & making the solution?
Thank you,
richfred

Why are you purchasing this stuff direct from GM? Nearly all auto-parts stores sell it. Heck, I think I even saw it at Walmart the other day.

the dpf/regen/def systems can reportedly be an endless cause of trouble, massive sink of time and money, and cold weather makes it worse. That's why I won't yet consider a post-2007 USA diesel, after enjoying 4 pre-2007 VW TDIs.

Many post-2007 diesel owners reportedly wait for warranty to expire, and then amazingly use their vehicle off-road only, after removing the DPF and reprogramming the ECM to handle the removed regen/def/dpf. Apparently the offroad-mpg increases are huge after doing that.

The consumption figures I've been reading suggest about 1 gal per 1,000 miles and a shelf life of one year.
