My 2003 4runner allows exhaust smells to enter the car even when the system is set on recirculated air. How do I correct this problem?
Exhaust odors might not be related to your HVAC system... It could be an exhaust leak, and should be inspected. Any time you smell exhaust, you could also be breathing carbon monoxide (which has no odor).

I agree with kyfdx. I'd check for an exhaust leak. If you drive with the back window open, that literally pulls exhaust into the car.
