2004 Buick Rendezvous Fuel and Temperature Gauge

Hello,

I have recently purchased a 2WD 2004 Buick Rendezvous. All in all I am very happy with the purchase but the fuel and temperature gauges do not work. I was aware of this when purchased the vehicle, but I really got a great deal. I have been doing some research on Google and all I ever find is that the connections on the sending unit may be bad, but I am not quite convinced. The gauge locations on the dashboard are symmetrical and both temperature and fuel gauges are situated toward the bottom of the dashboard. So I was wondering if maybe there was something wrong with the cluster. It could be a problem with the sending unit at the gas tank and coincidentally something may be wrong with the temperature gauge I am simply not sure.

Both gauges have the same symptoms. The tick marks are only on the top half of the gauge but the gauge hand likes to stay on the bottom half of the gauge. The hand on the fuel gauge will move around every now and again but the temperature gauge generally stays pointed straight down.

Tank you for any help you can offer.

Given that there is no direct relationship between the fuel and temp gauges OTHER than the instrument cluster, that would be my first guess---also considering the past failures on similar vehicles.

A proper scan tool might be able to detect the problem.
