I picked up my ordered 2001 Silverado LS, ext-cab, Z-71, tow pkg, lock diff. 5.3L, 3.73, white/pewter, etc. on 12/19/00. It was built in Fort Wayne Indiana on 12/6/00. As of today I have 3105 miles on it, and it has been absolutely flawless. I've had no rattles, shakes, vibrations, squeaks, aftershocks, steering clunks, engine knocking, grinding transmission, nor wind noise. I've had no recalls on it, and it's never been the shop for anything. I've had nothing break on it (accept for the rock that hit my gold Chevy bow tie on the grill, replaced it for $12). It is an absolute dream to drive. Although I wish it had stronger factory fog lights, and a factory sliding rear window, I'd buy it again in a second without hesitation.
Yah, was doing about 70 mph down the freeway and smack, a rock hit the front of my new truck. When I got home I checked out the front end and saw that the right side of the gold Chevy bow tie in the front grill was busted and had a piece missing. Immediately went down to the dealer and bought a new gold bow tie for the grill for $12. Got home and it took me about 20 minutes to change it out. You have to open up the hood, remove the large flat black cover that covers the entrance to the area infront of the radiator and behind the grill. Locate the plastic clips on the bow tie that hold it to the grill and press them in to release it from the truck. This part required a bit of hunting, a flashlight, and a small mirror. Looks new again!!!
After finding a dealership about 70 miles away through GM Buypower, I bought my truck. I must say that overall, it was the best buying experience I have ever had. Everyone was right on the ball, NICE, and not too much haggling involved. I got a great truck and for a good price! Here is what I got..........
2001 Silverado 1500 Ext Cab Light Pewter Metallic with Graphite Interior 6 Way Power Bucket Seats 5.3 L V8 Z71 Package Autotrac P265/75R16-114S ALT WOL Tires Locking Rear Differential Wheel Opening Flares INT RV Mirror Light Sensitive with Outside Temp and Compass Electric Rear Window Defogger AM/FM CD w Cass Fog Lights Cast Aluminum Wheels Deep Tinted Glass Power Heated Outside Mirrors 3.73 Rear
Also comes with remote keyless entry, passlock theft deterrent...... etc...
So far its a great truck! Although I only have 250 miles on it! I have noticed that they did a poor job on the weatherstripping however.
Drivers side and passenger side (under hood) parts of it are coming off. Guess I gotta head back to the dealer to fix this huh? Also on the bottom of the drivers side extra cab door. Seems a little loose there as well. Other than that, that is all I can find so far.. I will keep you all posted.
Question for the rest of you Rado owners. Did your trucks come with small cheesy kinda plastic floor mats? I would have thought better ones should be in the truck....
Anyone know who makes (or where I can purchase) the hard fiberglass tonneau cover? You know the one that you can get painted the same color of your truck?
Ryan you mentionted huskyliners... Is there anything else out there that is worth looking into for floor mats???
Catch-All are good carpet based mats. They are a very short pile, matching color, carpet, but are backed by a waterproof rubber backing. They are molded and really do fit the Chevy floors extremely well. The edges are raised approx 1-1.5 inches so any water does not drain off onto the original carpet. Other rubber, non carpted mats may be the ticket if you drag alot of mud in with you, but for light/medium-duty, the Catch-Alls look good and seem to work well. All of them are too expensive. Check online auto parts stores. You can probably find Catch-Alls for 69.95 plus shipping which,I believe, is what I paid for mine.
my truck came with the tailgate protector. Leer huh? I will have to check it out. I want to get a bedliner first, then down the road a bit look into getting the fiberglass tonneau.
Your new truck sounds awesome. BTW, without getting into your personal business...I noticed an article in the paper this past Saturday (5/19) where GM was announcing immediate deep discounts to their trucks. Sure enough, I visited a local "one-price" Chevy dealer and all of their trucks had tags advertising $5500/6500 off MSRP, which is definitely a decent discount. I noticed you posted on 5/20...were you able to take advantage of the discounting? How does the Z71 ride in the city and are the wheel flares black or body-colored? Enjoy the new ride!!
yep leer 600 is one of the only ones that will work with the wahale tail. For all the other ones they have to remove it. I wanna keep it cause i really like it. I have seen this lid on a few trucks and it looks very nice the owners liked them too.
I picked up my truck on 5/15/01. I too have heard of massive discounts coming.. I ended up getting $1000 cash back on my new 01 Silverado. It ended up being cheaper than the lower APR financing.
The Z71 is not too bad in the city. Its not a jaguar (hehehe)but its much better than the Ford F-150 with there 4x4 package.
My wheel flares are body colored and look pretty nice! Thanks for the nice comments... Let me know if you have any other questions.
Ryan - I hear ya on the whale tail. I like it as well and would not want to remove it. I will have to look around my area for 4x4 shops carrying leer products.
One of the homeboys up here just got a hard tonneau cover and had to take off his whaletail....It left 4 (?) big holes in his tailgate . Where the screws used to be It don't look pretty ..but he don't care...
Interesting. I dont want any holes on my truck.. I will have to investigate when Im ready to purchase. My first order of business is mudflaps, floormats, and a bedliner.... not necessarily in that order.... LOL
The boss got me a soft tonneau cover and under the rail bedliner for my new baby the other day...CHEAP TOO...159 for tonneau at k-mart 189 for liner at the farm and country store She sure is a good shopper. Also got me a new wash mit, chamois (spl),detail spray stuff too..Me thinks she wants something..Her Caddy is a 96...But i keep my cars and run them to 100K plus..The truck has to go every 3-4 years as i work the tar out it...............Geo
That is pretty cool that you got hooked up. I want an under the rail bedliner as well, but I am looking for the hard fiberglass tonneau at some point. Gotta save up some extra dollars for that though.
my parents are looking to buy me my first car. the silverado's are advertising for 6k off msrp like you all were talking about, and i was wondering if you all knew how long this would last, and if these were only on 1 or 2 silverados per dealership. thanks for any feedback
thats a nice lid but ARE doesnt make a lid that works with the "whale tail" tailgate protector. It would have to be removed and another one added. Leer and a few offbeat companies make lids for this. Leer being the best. I wish ARE did make one to fit.
I have not heard anything about 6k under MSRP for the 01 Rado's. Right now its $1000 cash back or low APR... at least that was the deal for me. I took the cash back cause it was cheaper for me in the long run...
Keep looking you still may find some good deals. Your best bet is to find something you like on the lot, (which is what I did).
If you'll go to Intellichoice.Com, there's a link there that will list all manufacturer incentive programs with expiration date. I don't know if the 6k discount is considered an "incentive program", but if you don't see it listed, just call the dealer and ask for the expiration date. There are 3 mega Chevy Dealers here with at least 100 pickups on their lots. Like I said in post#115, I went to one Chevy dealer after reading the article about GM announcing deep discounts and saw all pickups with a tag hanging from rearview mirror that read "$6500 Off MSRP", which is one heck of a discount. Now's definitely the time to buy, if you're in the market for a Chevy. I would think this applies to GMC as well.
I just went to 2 dealers over the weekend, one base truck msrp was 26,709, basic package and options, the other dealer with the SAME truck and options (twins) had a msrp of 29, 600, but this dealer was looking at giving me a 3-4k discount from the factory. Watch the msrp dont be fooled by large discounts, the lesser price truck I didnt get to price as I was "just looking"
tkenny53.....Unless I'm missing something, I don't know how you could've found 2 trucks at 2 different dealers equipped exactly alike with different MSRP's. When the vehicles arrive at the dealership from the factory, the window sticker has already been printed with the Dealer's name at the top and the pricing below that. Of course, you'll see another sticker attached when a dealer adds on options. At any rate, copy the info off the sticker, then come to Edmunds and do the math in New Car Pricing to compare Invoice/MRSP, then you'll know for sure if Dealer A or B tampered with MSRP and whether or not you're getting that huge discount.
I know what I saw, I have seen this before, the dealer came right out and told me that the invoice already had the 'dealer markup included' and would take that off if I would buy it today. And sure enough the MSRP was up an even $3000. Just a game they play. I have priced here already and know what I can get the truck for. I have never paid for dealer or factory add-ons, always below msrp.
MSRP is the same everywhere...until the manufacturer raises the prices in mid-year. That is why I prefer the ads..."$4900 off MSRP" instead of "$2000 off invoice". Invoice means different things to different dealers.
Yes, I agree that MSRP is the same everywhere since GM, FORD, ETC...sets the price and prints this on the window sticker. Dealer/customer can then negotiate on the actual selling price. Factory incentives bring the MSRP down when in effect, and as you mentioned go up at mid-year. I also agree that invoice is interpreted differently as factory to dealer (not customer) and holdback can and does affect invoice. No matter, it's all a game and you have to constantly monitor during the shopping/purchasing process to make sure you get a good deal and that the dealer also makes his/her profit.
I looked up the dealer stock on teh GM website, and looked at the sticker. The stickers on the website list the options installed, but not the prices. Copied the options then went to Edmunds and calculated dealer invoice.
I chose this dealership because my daughter had recently bought an Accord from a dealership down the street. She went there because the finance manager was her boss' cousin. She got a very good deal on the Accord.
While I was signing the pape3rs as a co-signer for her, I mentioned that I was in the market for a Sierra. The finince manager said that the GMC dealership down the street was owned by the same company that owned the Honda dealership (Auto Nation). He got me the name of the sales manager.
Having found on-line the truck I was interested in, I wrote down the VIN and drove over to the dealership. Sales guy came at me and I asked for the Sales Manager by name. He took me inside and iintroduced myself to the SM. He said, "Yea, Sam called me. Harold (salesman), see if hecan find one he likes, and bring the paperwork to me."
Harold asks me what I'm looking for and I give him the paper with the VIN on it. He looks it up in his system, grabs the keys, and off we go. Test drive goes OK, so he parks me in his office to go get a price. Sticker was $29,900 and I had estimated the invoice at $24,300. He came back with a price of $24,900 and the deal was done.
And that is why we shop and say "We're just looking" until we find an honest, up-front salesman. I do NOT want to be ripped off and on the other side of the coin, I do not want to waste the time of an unethical, "slick" salesman.
I find that the dealership ownership plays a big part in the purchasing experience. Both of my experiences with Auto Nation have been highly positive.
1949 - Yes, it is a Fire Red (when I bought my first truck in 1987 - Mazda B2200 - I asked my then 11 and 9 year old daughters what color I should get. They said red, and now I am not allowed to buy any other color.) Xcab SLT 5.3/auto/3.73 locker w/ cloth manual buckets. 17k miles and I love it. Absolutely no problems.
mrurl.....who could say no to red (or any other color) when two little girls in '87 are "telling" dad to get red....In 2001, they're both in their 20's, so why would dad change now? LOL.. Glad you're enjoying that GMC...they're really sharp looking. I visited the GMC website and rec'd two letters the following week with brochures, inviting me to take a test-drive. I think your choice of 5.3/3.73 is the perfect combination for this size truck. Enjoy!

I DID end up getting a 2001 Chevy Silverado last night! Sweet truck, will tell you all about it when I have some time to sit down and type!
Take care,
Jim
Wow he wont be posting for awhile haha
Do I care what anyone else drives, no.
Should it matter, no.
Should you care what I drive, no.
Get my point?? no. (I'm guessing here)
I've had no rattles, shakes, vibrations, squeaks, aftershocks, steering clunks, engine knocking, grinding transmission, nor wind noise. Wow might have to replace it
