I'd like our long-term 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe to have more range.

I think that's actually pretty poor. I'd like to see it have more too. Especially for such a new car. I have two 10 year old 100K+ vehicles, one a family sedan with a 17-18 gallon tank and my truck with a 19 gallon tank. The truck is not big, a Chevy Colorado with the 3.5 engine and the car is an Impala with the horrid 3.4. Humdrum vehicles by today's standards and even by the standards of the day in which they were built. However, I regularly get 360 miles out of my truck with an average of 20 mpg and the car gets nearly 400, ,however since I don't fill that one up I am not able to track it's fuel mileage. On road trips I am able to and I have gotten over 30 mpg. I have pushed it well past 450 and have even managed 500 miles once. This is not a small car either. So if a ten year old car running on 20 year old technology (the architecture for the 3.4 motor debuted sometime in the early 90's I think) can manage 25 mpg around town and over 30 on the highway without really trying, I would think that with today's technology, we should be able to do better.

max range is all a theoretical issue for me. i am limited by my wife's bladder more so than my fuel tank size.

I'm not sure why a 300-ish mile range is an issue unless you commute a lot each day, and then you're filling up every 2nd day. But on long trips, you really want to be out of the car after 5 hours of driving anyway.

What was the MPG that's the number that tells me the most.

I have a '13 Sport with the 2.4 liter four, and get 23-25 in the city and 31-34 on the hwy...consistently...20,000 miles consistent..All the power I need and a huge cruising range..It only holds 5 with luggage, but that's more than enough for me (and most people, I assume)..You're testing the wrong model...No problems, so far..Jack
