It depends what oil you're using.
I had my Mobil1 analyzed at 5,700 miles and it still had life left in it.

Even with conventional oil 3,000 miles is overkill. The manual calls for 3,750 for severe service.

krzyss - I'll have to read over the service manual again and get back to you with the complete list of services.

For the service I just had ($100), I figure the oil change would be $25, the additive would be $5 (Jiffy Lube has this too - just stuff to add to the "standard" oil - who knows if it does anything), tire rotation $50 (not sure how much this would cost if I went to a garage to have it done - but I think rotating the tires is a good idea, and without a hydrolic jack and air wrench of my own, it would take me quite a while to rotate my own tires!). That's about $80 right there, and then they did a 100 point checkup (or something like that) of my car - which I thought was important since it's never been looked over since I bought it. A bit of piece of mind, that's all.

In the future I will likely do stuff ala cart - oil change, coolant flush, etc.

I had my OEM tires rotated at Big O tires a couple of weeks ago...they do not charge to rotate the tires, regardless of tire brand. It varies from place to place, but the most I've spent to rotate the tires (not balance, just rotate) is $10.

Interestingly, they also perform free alignment checks but had no data on the 2003/4 WRX...without the specs they couldn't check my car that day. I'm finding more and more places that have no record of the WRX in their files (AMEX and Allstate insurance, Big O,...)

Sorry -- it's the name of a chain of tire shops here in the west...may not be everywhere, though. Discount Tire, which I think is a national brand, usually charges $10 for rotations.

Big O, not Bingo. If you don't know what I mean, then you probably don't have them around. And this is an indication of effective advertising.

They have been advertising on the radio like crazy down here and the commercials are kind of cute (little old lady comes in and wants to play Bingo, which they have to explain they don't do there - they sell tires). I've heard it so many times I'll never forget what they are (they are a tire store) even though I have never been in one. I suspect they are like Just Tires or Discount Tires or others like that, but as I said, I've never been in one!

Hopefully the powers that be don't mind me posting this all over Edmunds, but it's important.

I know some of you don't check the other Subaru boards here, so I'm posting this news.

My WRX was stolen from Sears in Watchung this week. It's the 3rd wagon in the past few weeks and the 5th WRX.

Another WRX in Bloomfield was stolen today.

What sort of security did your car have? alarm, club, lojack, pitbull
  • bluesubiebluesubie Member Posts: 3,497
OEM alarm with a club sitting on the floor.
A friend of mine had his stolen a few weeks ago and he had lo-jack, auto-lock and a club.
If they want it, they'll take it.

Does the OEM alarm have starter kill and can the a-holes get around it? Does anything really work? I thought the ignition kill thing meant "it aint being started" but they can tow it. Maybe I am naive.

Also are the cars being stripped or stolen for fun?
  • bluesubiebluesubie Member Posts: 3,497
All UK Impreza's get an alarm with an "immobiliser". Nothing I've read about our alarms mention kill switch so I don't know the details. It's by Alpine though.

The cars are being stolen for fun. A WRX and STi were stolen this past Friday. Both the other WRX guy and myself were able to track EZ Pass electrontic toll activity. They're just cruising around in our cars.

Time for an old school Subie.

That sux. But yeah WRXs are targets now, just like hondahs a few years back. Get an SVX :)

I've heard, that theft rate in Australia on WRX's is so bad, that it has like the worst insurance ratings... And, it is very strange, they steal them so easily - on my Legacy's remote battery went down, nad I couldn't start it EVEN WITH THE ORIGINAL KEY - had to wait for stores to open, and only with remote and the key could start the car.
Don't they install engine immobilizer on all US WRX now?

Not related question - does anybody know what is WRX load capacity - people + cargo? And what is turbo Foresters?

geez. my GTI was stolen (10 years ago last week) last thing I need right now is somebody to swipe my wrx. blah.
    thanks for the heads up.

The manual for my WRX says that when the alarm is triggered the horn will sound, the lights will flash and the starter will not operate. Sounds like either the alarm wasn't armed, or someone had a key. You can turn off the alarm using the key if you know how to do it.

By the way, don't rely on the security system to protect things inside your WRX. Someone broke the drivers side window of my WRX with a large rock, and stole my radar detector. The alarm didn't go off. The car was in my driveway, locked and armed and I was asleep about 50 ft from the car. Apparently the impact of the rock wasn't enough shock to set it off.

Got a bit of a surprise today when I went to the dealer to buy a 6 pack of Subaru oil filters. Subaru has changed the recommended oil filter for the WRX. It's a smaller diameter filter than the one used in the 2.5 liter and other Suby engines. The parts guy said they changed it to give a little more clearance between the filter and exhaust pipe to keep the oil a little cooler. Didn't know there was a problem with that. Also don't know if I like the idea of using a smaller filter.

    Old part: 15208AA060
    New part: 15208AA080

Doesn't the oil get hotter in the turbocharger than in the oil filter? That's one of the reasons to use synthetic oil in the WRX, so the oil doesn't coke. I've used Mobil 1 5W30 since 7K miles.

gone is gone, what can you do. though they say, that this p.o.s. SAAB 9 3 is unstealable. hopefully they do something to make SAAB 9 2 ( which is WRX) same way. I can say only that I hope that all these stealing bastards soon will be punished by God or people in a horrible way...

BTW, can WRX have anything in the tow (like a jet watercraft or a snowmobile x2)?
  • bluesubiebluesubie Member Posts: 3,497
I think that alarms are ignored for the most part. Especially in shopping centers.

  • robmarchrobmarch Member Posts: 482
sounds like it might be the STi filter. Maybe they're making it a blanket recommendation for the turbo cars now that the STi filters are being imported more?

I dropped my WRX off this morning to get the oil changed at a gas station near my work (providing my own Mobil 1 and OEM filter, of course). The guy behind the counter said it would be done in 10-15 minutes as the mechanic pulled my wagon into the service bay. I said I'd be back before lunch to pick it up and walked to work.

I walked back about 40 minutes later to get the car, just as the mechaninc was parking it. I thought "that oil change sure took a long time!" I paid my $10 and got in the car. As I pulled away, I was careful to take it easy as the new oil heated up. Well, when I looked at the temp gauge it was fully warmed up. I think the mechanic (a young guy) took my car for a "test drive" after changing the oil!!!

I know the WRX is a cool car, but I never thought that they would be such a target for joyriders! Between thiefs and mechanics, I'll have to change my way of thinking and start getting uptight about the safety of my WRX!

    Unbelievable!

I was at the dealer a couple of days ago to buy an oil filter for my 04 WRX and the parts dept was very confused as to which part to give me. First he asked if my WRX had a turbo...immediately I lost confidence in the guy. Then he doubted that it was the 2.0l turbo, and instead was convinced the 04 WRX had the 2.5l turbo. Ugh.

After endlessly searching his computer for the right part number, I got a filter, went home and changed the oil. The new filter matched the old one, but they were both the "old" part number...I didn't get the new part I guess.

Thanks for the clarification; next time I'll make sure I get the other part!

    Jim --

Do you have an oil temp gauge? The gauge in the main binnacle is for coolant temp not oil temp.

There's no reason the coolant temp wouldn't stay at the normal operating level after an oil change.
  • jim_loves_carsjim_loves_cars Member Posts: 190
at any rate, the car should have been turned off for 45 minutes - long enough to cool off!! The car was all "warmed up" when I picked it up.

    I still think it's suspicious...
  • stoner420stoner420 Member Posts: 165
was it already warmed up when you dropped it off? my car is usually still warm after sitting for hours.. the turbo is HOT in so many ways! ;-)

Anyhow, if you already bought the oil and filter, why not just buy a pair of ramps (~$17 @ walmart) and do it yourself!
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
Oil Filter, are we sure of this change? I bet a lot of dealers are just going to carry the STi Oil Filter rather than stock 2 different ones.

If I changed my oil myself, it would get done every 35k miles or so!! One of the benefits of getting older is knowing your shortcomings. I'd rather pay $10 to see that it gets done on time.

I'll just check the odo before I drop her off next time so I won't have to be so paranoid. I swear that guy had a guilty / happy look on his face!

    LOL Bruce!

But nah, you have wagon experience and are qualified to post here. Heck, more than I am!

Yeah, where is it still $10? My dealer wants $20, plus a $2 "Environmental Fee". Ridiculous, it's $22, I mean, c'mon!

  • kenskens Member Posts: 5,869
If you go to those Jiffy Lube places, they'll also slap on an additional $20 just because it's AWD. Why? Just because it shows up on their computer as AWD.

  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
Is cheap IMHO. Around here it's like $27 usually.
Now that I have the trailer I just backup on the trailer, and let the nose overhang, and bango, it's done easily.

I've noticed something for about a week now that I'm not happy with. Since I got my wrx this year, everything has been fine. Now that the weather is starting to get a little colder, I've noticed a ticking sounding coming from the engine for the first few minutes of driving. I make sure to hit the gas just enough as I need, and not to put any excess stress on the motor when this happens. Is this normal? I have 10k miles on the engine, and it's sounding like I have 100k, at least for the first couple minutes? Should I just have the car idle for 5 minutes before driving it? And what happens when it gets REALLY cold out this winter?

Is the engine oil not circulating fast enough? Too thick? Opinions?

Oh, and while I'm at it - has anyone else experienced warmer air from the vents than the outside temp, even with the temp control on the coldest (a/c off)? It's most noticeable when it's like 60 degrees outside, but the air coming through the vents (on the fresh setting, not recirculate) is like 75 degrees. I have to either roll down the windows or put on the a/c to cool the interior down - and when it's 60 degrees and rainy, I feel pretty stupid running my a/c. And this comes from someone who doesn't like cold temps - ie, I like warmer air, but this is too warm even for my likings.

Anyone else experience this? Does the engine just run too hot to provide air to the cabin at the same temp as the outside air?
  • jim_loves_carsjim_loves_cars Member Posts: 190
when you provide the oil (Mobil 1) and the filter (OEM) and just ask the guy to provide labor.
  • jim_loves_carsjim_loves_cars Member Posts: 190
Same thing in my '04 Wagon. Actually, it's happened with all the cars I've owned, but is particularly noticable in the WRX. You'll have a cozy winter!!

I used to change oil at local quick lube several years ago. When I was finished with an oil change I always let the engine run for several minutes while I checked the vehicle over for any leaks or residual oil drips. Most cars were at normal operating temperature when they left the shop. While it's nice to think that someone liked your car sooo much they snuck out for a spin you may be being unfair to the lube tech by jumping to this 'joyride' conclusion. During the time I worked at the shop I never once saw an employee take a joyride in a customer's car. I'm sure it happens, but unless you can see some evidence other than a warm engine, a 'joyride' may not be the most logical conclusion.

Years ago I brought a car to a dealer for maintance and body work covered by insurance. They sub contracted the work out to an outfit around the corner. When I picked up the car a week later there was an additional 40 miles on the odometer!
  • karl1973karl1973 Member Posts: 89
I don't think we should jump to conclusion.
If you have to bring a car in for body work/mechanical work, would you rather have them just do the work, without testing it?
Bring it to the attention to the shop owner, and listen to them explain it. I don't think it is unreasonable for them to put a few miles on the car after they do some work on it. I'd rather have them find out something's not fixed right, than for myself to find out.
  • merrycynicmerrycynic Member Posts: 340
40 miles over 6 business days? When I got the car back the body work was shoddy and had to be redone, the headlight that was supposed to be replaced wasn't, and the spare tire well was FULL of water!
  • karl1973karl1973 Member Posts: 89
So we are going to take one experience and generalise every shop out there?
I hope you take your complaint to that particular shop.
  • merrycynicmerrycynic Member Posts: 340
    Karl1973,
I made no such assertion. It was a long time ago, and was dealt with then. The last two mechanics including the current one (the Subaru dealer I purchased the car from) are the absolute models of professional gentlemen.
  • jim_loves_carsjim_loves_cars Member Posts: 190
You're right about me jumping to conclusions.

When I walked onto the lot to pick up the car, the mechanic was just parking it after the 45 minute oil change. He had a look on his face when I saw him like "oh no, he caught me!." I was struck by it. He then acted all sheepish while I was paying. When I got in the car and saw the temp gauge was warmed up, my mind put together this very vivid scenario of the mechanic hooting out loud as he got air over the crest of a hill in my WRX. You know, the Ferris Bueller thing.

I have no evidence to support my conclusion - it's just me being suspicious. Boy, owning a WRX sure makes you paranoid. It's like being married to a supermodel!

    How we all must suffer...

  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
mike: I usually do it myself, but the dealer was doing a recall anyway, and it's the wife's car. From now on I'll just do it myself, which I prefer.

I think the alarm on the WRX is pretty much passive. There's no motion sensor or anything like that. The only way you can really set it off is to lock the doors, then unlock or open them from the inside while no one is in the car.

This is done be reaching through an open, (or broken) window and unlocking the door without the key.

Many factory alarms operate like this. Thieves probably know this. If they just want something from inside the car, they can break the window and reach in and grab it. If they don't open the doors, the alarm will not go off.
  • bluesubiebluesubie Member Posts: 3,497
    "Thieves probably know this."

They know exactly how the factory alarm works. My owner's manual was missing when I got my car back.

    -Dennis
  • hypovhypov Member Posts: 3,068
Not difficult to send it to valet either :p
which shuts the alarm off after breaking in.

    -Dave
  • saintvipersaintviper Member Posts: 177
If thieves were as smart as the movies make them out to be, they probably wouldn't be breaking into cars to subisdize their pathetic lifestyles.

Most of these crimes are crimes of opportunity. You want to make it just inconvenient enough for them to skip you car and find an easier target. Park in a well lit area. Don't leave valuables (including aftermarket stereo equipement, CD's, aftermarket performance parts, etc...) visible in your car. Put an aftermarket alarm system sticker in your window whether you have one or not. Tinting the windows will make it harder to see in and will add inconvenience because the window won't shatter.

Sure there are pros that can get past any defense, but the majority of these guys are morons looking for an easy mark. Making it just inconvenient enough for them to think twice will send 90% of these guys off to find an easier mark.

Appararently the WRX Wagon holds it's value pretty well.
