The free bedliner is on hold because I'm not sure that I want it. That Ruby Red Metallic Clear Coat is so beautiful that I hate to put a black liner into the bed. Still, I know that it would prevent scratches.
Hi Richard,
Congrats on the purchase! Another thing to consider is a spray in bed liner. I believe they can color match it to your paint.

Richard, you really should have that bedliner installed immediately! It doesn't take much to scratch that beautiful red color. It's the protection from scratches and dings that are most important.
I also remember a remark made by the internet sales guy. He said that I was getting a slight edge on price because I was a distance buyer. While that may have been all BS, I wondered if there was some truth to that.
Richard
I was thinking about how you probably got a better price from buying from a dealer that is so far away. I think what he means is he is giving you a lower price than normal because 1) it is a car he sold that he never would have normally sold...kind of a bonus that was unexpected, and 2) you won't be telling too many people in his area about the price you got. If you tell someone close to home, then that will be another unexpected bonus for the dealer.
I'd get that bed protector. "IF" you do sell the truck one day the next guy would like to have it. Scratches and dents are easy to do too.
One thing I noticed when I was in an F-150 is because of the height and the strength you feel indestructable....now don't get too carried away.

Thanks for that tip Nelson. I'll definitely check it out.
To Mike and Driver: I think that you are right. I had better do the bedliner.
Driver: You made a very interesting point that had also occurred to me. Sitting up high and surrounded by a lot of truck, I do feel a bit more invincible. I am being very careful because I'm not used to driving a vehicle of that size. Neither have I gunned that V8 to check for lots of power. I'm breaking the truck in gently at first. What a joy it is!

Congratulations on your new truck Richard. I bet the antique stores and flea markets are quivering with anticipation.

LOL! It WILL come in handy. My museum board has already asked if I'll drive it in the Christmas Parade with the officers in the back. People are so funny. The guy brought me the truck on Tuesday and the whole town knew it by Wednesday. Of course it didn't help any that my wife announced it at a club meeting Wednesday morning where 40 women attended.
@driver100, down here in the States most cities have Buy Here Pay Here used car lots for people who need wheels but have bad credit. So they get called BHPHs. Miss a weekly payment and they repo your car. Lots of them will tell you a car runs great, but those promises don't hold water. One way they make money is repo'ing your car and selling it over and over, after doing just enough in the way of repairs for the next buyer to be able to drive it off the lot.
And sorry about the too much info re posting. The simplest way to post links to me is to highlight your text and click the Link icon and paste your URL there.
Funny thing about pickup beds - scratched and dented beds don't seem to affect resale value any. Those poly(?) bedliners are sometimes frowned upon because they can move around and scratch the paint and then trap moisture, leading to rust. The "Rhino" liners avoid that problem and look nice to me.
My truck came with a bedliner. It also has the front a few inches lower than the rear which means it holds water quite well. As soon as I climb my first hill after a rain, about 5 gallons runs out the back under the tailgate. I call it tailgatius interruptus.
Richard, you're going to have to take a picture of your truck and send it to edmunds for processing (lol) because after scanning 150 2014 trucks, only 1 had the silver bottom you describe and it was otherwise black so not a good comparison.

Thanks for the definition of a BHPH. We have those dealers here but not enough to give them a special name. It is too bad people who can't afford a decent car are the one's who get hooked by the BHPH scammers.

I read in the NY Times that Cadillac is getting ready to launch an upscale luxury sedan befitting the brand name "Cadillac." The luxury model will hit showrooms in late 2015 and is intended to compete head-on with the BMW 7 Series, Audi A8, and Mercedes S Class. Good luck with that.
It's a darn shame that in popular culture the name Cadillac is synonymous with luxury, yet GM cannot build a sedan with the aspirational cachet and prestige that is the global standard for luxury. It was not always that way but GM chose to ignore it's prime demographic (the moneyed class) in search of a younger and illusive buyer.
GM is hedging its bet on this yet-to-be-named sedan with a strategy that takes the Chinese market into consideration. Last year and this year GM sold more Cadillac sedans in China than in the U.S.

I saw a commercial for the Q 50 that was showcasing the car's safety features. The driver was daydreaming and swerving into other cars only to be warned by lane monitors and blind spot notices. At one point he's gazing out the window and fails to brake for a stopped vehicle. He's saved by the auto brake system.
I can't help but think that this guy shouldn't have a license.

What concerns me about the over-abundance of safety technologies on some of these cars is the potential "nonchalant" approach to driving people are beginning to exercise. What I mean by "nonchalant" has to do with an over-dependence on the technology systems that the driver assumes will zigzag him/her through all kinds of road hazards and other careless drivers - not to mention the carelessness of the driver him/herself!
Even though I have an outstanding set of safety features and technologies on my car, I refuse to depend on them to keep me safe on the highway or the streets. Yes, my car will brake itself if I fail to brake appropriately and/or in a timely manner; yes my car will alert me if a car is in one of my blind spots; yes my car will alert me with a vibrating steering wheel if I drift out of a lane without my directional on; yes my car will alert me if I am coming up on a moving or stationary object too quickly and a collision may be imminent; and a bunch of other gizmos which help the driver navigate safely. But drivers become a bit more complacent if they begin relying on these technologies too much - don't you agree?
Neither have I gunned that V8 to check for lots of power. I'm breaking the truck in gently at first. What a joy it is!
Modern internal combustion engines do not require the kind of break in we used to do. And a hard pass through the gears (accelerate flat out or near flat out from 0 to 70) is actually considered to be good for a new engine.
I have a very, very similar model, 2013 F150 4x2 crew cab, XLT, with the 5.0L V8 engine. It is a very nice truck, and a hell of a deal. Even throwing out the utility of the pickup bed, it's impossible to buy a 4 door sedan with that much interior room, at any price. And the price on these is really very reasonable (considering the factory incentives, etc).
I suspect you will be pleased with the gas mileage as well. I'm doing much better than I expected, based on my experience with previous pickup trucks.

Didn't we have this conversation recently? I agree with @henryn - better just to get in and go and not coddle a new motor imo. What does the owner's manual say?
Plus, better that it blows up the first month than a month after the powertrain warranty runs out.

The answer is: it depends. Each manufacturer has it's own recommendation regarding break in. The best thing is to RTFM.

My wife and I went a Lincoln sponsored fund raising event this afternoon. Drove an MKZ (mid size sedan) around a parking lot. Also looked at an MKC (small suv). The MKZ was a hybrid model. It was black with dark gray wheels and it looked great up close. Seats are a bit more comfortable than my Fusion and the ride seems to be a bit better. Slow speeds but old parking lot with speed bumps. I'm going to see if I can make one of those work, although probably not. MKC exterior looked good, but interior was kind of a let down, specifically referring to the center controls.

The problem with Cadillac in many markets (like mine) is the dealer network. They cannot provide the environment to sell a very expensive car like that. In my market both Cadillac dealers sell mostly Cruzes, Sonics, and pickups, and the customer experience is what you'd expect of that. A buyer of a top-end Cadillac does not want that kind of sales and service environment. But they would not have enough volume of Cadillac alone to justify a standalone dealer. I really wonder if this is going to be an expensive failure for Cadillac and GM.
"I really wonder if this is going to be an expensive failure for Cadillac and GM."
I feel that if they really wanted to, they could produce a car that would rival BMW. Audi and Mercedes - but it would require a level of service and amenities GM hasn't had to offer in over 50 years.
I agree that the concept could be a costly endeavor for GM and a loser as well. Many CADILLAC dealers down here sell other GM brands - not a situation that could support the level of service and an environment needed in order to attract the high end buyer.

Ok, I am going to try it again, but, I don't think I can do it. I finally managed the first way, and it was by far the easiest. The 2nd generation was a bit more difficult, but, I managed to do it. @driver100, 'In grade school they told me I had a higher IQ than average, and I skipped grade 4.' No, they just wanted the 5th graders to beat you up.
lol....I knew there was a reason they did that. The main reason I skipped was because I got my answers from the very smart kid who sat across from me. But, at least I figured out a way to do that, I deserve some credit!

Yes. He drove it from Indianapolis to Modoc, Indiana, to a school in the county where I grew up. I've seen the Hot Dog mobile and I've seen James Bonds Aston Martin with the machine guns that come out of the parking lights (1 of 4 such cars made for the movies). This was great. Can you imagine meeting this on the highway?
For those interested, it is based on a Geo Metro with its 3-cylinder engine.

Is the truck like this? If so, that is a great looking truck!
You found my truck exactly! That's it! Thanks so much for doing that for me. I appreciate it.
Imid: Remember, not crimson---Ruby Red Metallic Clear Coat. It truly is a color unto itself, difficult to capture in pictures. The Ingot Silver trim was what I had really wanted and couldn't seem to find. That's why I was so taken aback when I saw it on the lot while visiting my sister. I just couldn't pass it up.
I have the most wonderful news to share and I keep pinching myself to make sure that it's true. Here's what happened. On the way home from museum duty this afternoon, my wife made a suggestion. The conversation went mostly like this:
Wife: Why don't you see if you can get the truck in the garage by folding in the mirrors?
Me: No, Honey. I tried that the first time that I tried out the F150. Remember that I put a scratch on one of the big mirrors?
Wife: Yes, but the mirrors were out when you did that.
Me: No, they were folded in.
Wife: No, they weren't.
Me: You just don't remember.
Wife: I was standing right there and I saw it.
Me: I rather not chance it.
Wife: I'll watch you come in and let you know if it's too close.
To avoid a real argument, I agreed to try it. Mirrors folded in, here we go. Wow! It went right into the garage. I couldn't believe it. I got a measuring tape and measured each side space. I have 12 inches on each side at the back! The trick is not to turn the wheel even a fraction as I back out. I've tried it three times this evening and it works. I can't believe it. Garage problem is solved. I don't deserve this much good luck, but I'm very grateful for it.

'In grade school they told me I had a higher IQ than average, and I skipped grade 4.'
No, they just wanted the 5th graders to beat you up.

"I presume you are being facetious??"
Facetious is a strong word - maybe more on the obnoxious side - but also a bit facetious as well.

2014 Malibu 2LT, 2015 Cruze 2LT,
It probably still is!

I've seen this car or its clones several times because it's traveling on I75 or I70.

Imid: Remember, not crimson---Ruby Red Metallic Clear Coat.
