I'm feeling fortunate. My son, throughout the years, hasn't really asked me for anything. Yes, I paid for him to go to private schools and college (at least the first 4 years), he worked all through high school and college to provide himself with "running around" money, books, insuranced and pertrol for the cars he's had.

He has a good job in IT. Enjoys spending time with his Dad. Is a joy to be around.

I really can't ask for more. I'm proud of him!

I did supply his HS car, which went all the way through college and a little beyond (our old TL which I paid $2k for and got 6 years use!) Now he is off on his own, making engineer money, and not asking me for anything. And he still talks to us and comes to visit. Even going on vacation together next week.

So overall I consider him a successful investment!
Definitely a successful investment a good news story too.

I have a nephew who worked his way through university - summers at a garden center and weekends making unique birdhouses. Has a good job in vegetable growing, got promoted to working on bok choy, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, celery, chives, garlic, kale, kohlrabi, lettuce, leeks, onions, shallots and spinach.

A really good kid and nice to see him doing well in his chosen (to use a pun) field.

Congratulations on getting your taxes done.

I did mine on Saturday via H & R block and e-filed just like I have done for about 5 years now.

2016 is the first year that I was completely retired so I had time to think about cheating a lot more than in years past and it sure did pay off. Last year, for 2015, I owed the feds more than 4 grand (2014 it was 6 grand). This year they owe me $85. Not a lot but better than years ago and surely not enough for one of Mike's steakhouse rip-offs.

Oh yeah, I broke even for the state of PA. Last year I owed them $260.

Ain't full retirement great? You just have to think about the right stuff. :D

If you call Turbo Tax with a problem right now, chances are you could talk to my wife. Her third year doing this part time gig five nights a week. Horrible hours but her day gigs make it such but heck, she loves it so why not! Been lucky, my dad was an accountant and always did my taxes as a kid. Married my CPA wife and she took over doing them years ago. I just sign but did take an H&R Block tax class a few years back just to have a general knowledge. Talk about hard...she got me through that class but she was patient and never laughed though am sure she wanted to.
They owe us but since we pay quarterly, she just rolls it over to the next quarters payment. Whatever!

What's wrong with a 2.6 sec. 0-60? Think how fast you can get groceries during commercials so you won't miss any of the game.

They say only 3000 will be built. How many do you think will be stuck in storage somewhere in hopes they will appreciate?

In that vein, are modern car storable? A 60's car with it's simple mechanics could probably be pulled out after years and with some new gas, a carb rebuild and maybe a few new gaskets, be put right back on the road.

A rare super car might be unsalavageable if a computer component failed or a line of code went screwy. I can't imagine a big aftermarket support for such low production.

Took a drive over to the dealership where I bought my car in December. I had gotten a call offering me a free car wash by the Genius Team.

I arrived and my Genius promptly took my car out back to the car wash area. He said they would hand wash the car and do a brief detail of the interior as well. He said it would take about 45 minutes or so.

I went into the showroom and was admiring the new 540i. They had a fully loaded one on the showroom floor in Mediterranean Blue with Cognac Dakota leather interior. MSRP was $74,195 - a bit steep for a 5 series, but I guess they increased the pricing a bit on this new one. I have to admit, they sure did a nice job on what looks to be a complete overhaul of the previous generation of 5's. I sat in the front seat and it was very comfortable, but not as comfortable as my 7 series - it felt a bit cramped and a much shorter center console. My Genius guy came over and asked if I would be interested in driving the new 5 series while I was waiting for my car. That's like asking a little boy if he would like a piece of chocolate - of course I took him up on the offer.

We walked out to the front of the dealership and he had a White 540i with black leather interior. I got in and did a quick survey of all the features which are very similar to my 740i. I buckled up and started the engine. We pulled out and I took it onto I-75 North. The 540i has the same engine as I have in my 740i, but with about 10 additional horsepower and a bit more torque. Acceleration was sweet - got it up to 70 mph in about 5 seconds and then blended in with the traffic. The ride and handling of the 540i is sharper and more responsive than the 7 series. It brought back memories of my 2008 535i and a great feel of the road, even though the steering is electronic power steering rather than hydraulic. This car has true grit in my opinion - fast, agile and responsive. No matter what I did in terms of acceleration, steering, entering or exiting the interstate, the car responded quickly and adroitly.

I did not find the seat comfort as acceptable as in my 740i - but that is to be expected. On a long road trip, I think I would have some problems with my back and derriere. The bottom cushion of the driver's seat seemed much stiffer and harder than in my car.

All in all, it was a great experience. I wonder if they had come out with the 540i back in November or December when I went looking for a new car if I would have bought one like the 540i I drove. There is a USAA discount of $2000 (my 740i had a $2500 discount) on the 540i right now, but you must take out a loan through BMW Financial Services for a minimum of $15,000 at 3.15% APR to qualify for the incentive through USAA. I am financed through Bank of America at 2.39% for 72 months (only $24,000 balance at this time). Rates are sure going up - there have been a couple of .25% increases in the past 5 months. I would probably not have purchased the 540i as I found it still a bit difficult to get into the car and get out of the car because it is lower in stance than the 740i. Also, I have air suspension and can raise my car a couple of inches when I park so it is easier getting in and out. I guess I would have had to order the air suspension with the 540i to get a similar result.

As for looks and styling, both inside and outside, it's a winner! I like the car much more than the Mercedes E Class because it is larger, much more powerful, and has the same technology as the 7 series has, as best as I was able to determine in my 20 minute test drive.

As for pricing, the Genius told me that they would discount the car down to invoice for me and then take off the $2000 at the bottom. Invoice is $69,405 so I would end up paying about $71,000 for the car when you add back dealers fees, title fees, etc. That's $12,000 less than I paid for the 740i. In comparison, I personally feel that for a difference of $12,000, I have much more car with much more space and a better ride and handling designed for people like me than I would have in a 540i. But I certainly would give this new 5 series a "serious look see" if I was in the market for a luxury vehicle with "guts"!

My car came out front as we were arriving back at the dealership and they did a superb job on detailing it. It took them about 75 minutes to complete the detail - nice gesture on my dealership's part.

I see a promotion in Dodge's future, Buy this Car and we'll pay for your first speeding ticket.

Of course, I'd find the roadside assistance and "loaner car" programs more valuable, if available or offered.

Speaking of loaner cars, looks like I might be in mine for a lot longer than expected

So I got a call the other day that the part my car needs would indeed arrive on the 12th, only May 12th, not April 12th. :disappointed:

My first reaction was disappointment, followed by some anger, but then when I take in the totality of the situation, gather more information and data inputs, I realize I am in a somewhat dicey situation. Probably could use some private confidential counsel from @graphicguy since he's the lemon buyback expert around here, but most likely, I'm just going to have to sit and wait, and just be happy I have a nice Audi loaner car.

My patience is wearing thin though.

Repost from CCBA board, but I'm so nauseated by this, I had to post again.

Massachusetts is a front plate state. The new bright red Alfa Giulia in my building just had the front plate installed. Wow, it just looks terrible. It's mounted on the passenger side lower front fascia, so as not to bisect the Alfa triangle grille. It's worth writing it again, Wow, it just looks terrible.

Mike - good review of the 540. You didn't mention how many colors the LED lights have...or if you can change the speedo into 3 different types.

Andre - They should make a rule, whatever time your car is in for service should get added to warranty. And no car should be off the road for over a month....waiting for parts. Another reason I wouldn't buy a Chevy SS.

GG Looks like the big change on the Acura is the grill, and it is definitely an improvement.

The 540i is a 2017 - there are no 2018 540i's yet.  This is the first 540i in production (2017).  They sold 2016's through the end of 2016.  They still have inventory on the 2016's - 535i.  The 540i is a brand new model - redesigned.  It had a front screen that was similar to mine.

I don't know if they offer the iPad type screen for rear entertainment and other controls like they offer in the 7 series.

The only 2018's available now, according to Edmunds, are the hybrid and the 550ix.

@andres3 - I understand your frustration with the part they are getting you for your TTS. Try to focus on the positives here. You are keeping miles off of your TTS which is one of the reasons you leased your Optima in the 1st place. Your wife can split driving between the leased Optima and her Alltrack. You are in a nice, Audi loaner.

Did you finance your car through Audi Credit? If so, maybe write a letter to Audi corporate letting them know how much you love their cars that you've owned and currently own (I'd leave out the modifications & the fact that you track the cars regularly), but that you are disappointed with how this one repair is panning out. Make sure you tell them how long your car has been in the shop and when the estimated fix date is. Ask nicely for a refund of 1 month's payment.

Life's too short to go all ballistic on them. Stand your ground politely, but firm.

I see a lot of them down here.  First of all, our electricity rates down here on the southeast coast are among the lowest in the country (FPL).  Secondly, I know of at least 3 showrooms down here so the Tessa gets quite a bit of exposure.

At the Boca Mall, they have 12 models available for test drives - model S and X - in all colors.  Boca Raton does not allow the sale of vehicles in the city - no dealerships anywhere in the town.  So orders for their cars have to be handled out of the city.  Once paid for (or leased) delivery is handled out of the city as well since the sale or lease is not consummated until their is "acceptance" - which taking delivery would be.

So everyone who lives in Boca Raton shops and buy their cars and vehicles in cities like Delray Beach, Deerfield Beach, Pompano Beach, Coconut Creek, West Palm Beach or Margate, Florida.

I guess they lose money or break even on just about everything they sell - profits are quite low - but they are meeting delivery demands from what I understand.

I thought "heat" was the killer of batteries.  I know car batteries are negatively affected by heat - I used to have to buy new batteries in my car every 18-24 months when I lived in Palm Desert.

I think the reference is to the charge range of the batteries used in plug-in cars. I'm already getting 2-3 miles further to a charge now that we've warmed from the 50s to the upper 60s. I imagine range really goes down in really cold climates.

Not being able to sell cars in the city reminded me of what I just heard on the news today. The average price of a home in Toronto is now about $1.5 million. The thinking is that the few gas stations that are left are going to go, because the land is more valuable if it is sold for a condo building. In Vancouver there are no more gas stations in the downtown....land is even more valuable there.

One Toronto Shell station, located at 38 Spadina Ave. was assessed at $8.4 million last year. Across the street, the Petro-Canada was assessed at $18.2 million. Hard to make that on selling gas at the pumps.

Some people believe gas pumps won't fade away completely, they will sell gas from pumps that are next to the street, and take up minimal space.

One of the major problems when redeveloping land  that for years housed a gasoline/diesel fuel station for residential use is that the below ground tanks always leak fuel which, when removed, need to be environmentally cleaned up.  That is a costly operation which can negatively affect residential development in those areas where gasoline stations occupied that same property.

How else are they going to ticket you or tax you? Just be glad you don't have to put plates on the sides too.

Down here in the Dallas area, they have small tanker trucks that will come to you and sell you gas.  They have the prices posted on the sides and it's very competitive with the stations.  Wave of the future or answer to a non-existent problem?  It would be a good thing in downtowns like @driver100 described above.

One Toronto Shell station, located at 38 Spadina Ave. was assessed at $8.4 million last year. Across the street, the Petro-Canada was assessed at $18.2 million. Hard to make that on selling gas at the pumps.

Property should be assessed according to its current use just as farm land is assessed as farm land, not what some land developer would pay. If that were not so, many farmers would be forced off of their land by obscene tax levels.
