Does anyone know what this piece is and if I have to replace it?

No guesses yet eh? I'm no mechanic but I'd guess some sort of heat shield. Although, usually those are rusty looking and your part looks awfully shiny.

yeah that's a good guess---heat shield of some sort. If you took it to the VW parts counter they might know, or it might even have a number on it. Also a muffler shop might know.

Looks like off the catalytic converter. No, you don't need to replace it.
