I have been a member of the Edmunds Town Hall since 1998.
So believe me when I say I have pretty thick skin.
I have read every post in the G35 thread since it's inception.
PS: Does anyone know when Infiniti will realease final pricing info on the coupe?

    Pat,
    Thanks for watchin' my back!

Scott, try Freshalloy.com, its coupe-crazy over there. Unfortunately, you have to sort through a lot of coupe posts to find a sedan post.

Someone there saw a sedan with the new plain trunk lid (no square, no release button) at a dealer in the East. They should be arriving everywhere soon.

Maybe sjred and faynor are now "recovering post-aholics". Paul has expired from AC noise. The Beemer defenders have considered themselves victorious and have retired.

There should be a lot of buzz when the 6 speed comes in February. Until then, maybe it will be a little quiet.

    Regards. Boomer

I saw in popular science that the next generation maxima may have awd to cope with higher horsepower. Did they mean the G35 perhaps? or would this signal that AWD is entering back into Nissan's thoughts for their VQ sedans?

not that popsci is a great automotive source, but...

According to the "Short Take" article on the current 2003 Maxima in the October 2002 issue of C&D:

"The next generation [Maxima] will share the latest Altima's foundations, a change that should produce improvement but will leave Nissan's top sedan committed to the performance drawbacks of front-wheel drive."

Gents (and Ladies maybe) My car is supposed to be arriving in late Oct. Am I hearing correctly . There is a new trunk design? I searched the internet (a part of it anyway) and found nothing. Can you point me to a pic or two?

Just saw the thread in the problems and solutions forum. heading over to fresh alloy to scope it out.

    Thanks!

The Altima platform certainly supports AWD (see Murano), so I wouldn't be surprised if it is an option on the next Maxima. G35 may also get AWD eventually, since its platform supports it as well (see Skyline GT-R).

There is nothing on the Infiniti news web site which lists the changes (package changes and XM radio option) about changes to the the trunk. Inquiring at the dealer, they are told by Infiniti it will not be changed. There is one person on FA that claims he saw a new trunk. Not one other person has, so pardon me if I am extremely dubious of this claim. It goes against every thing we have been told. Rumors have been flying for months, with no credibility. established.

Check infinitinews.com, Multimedia and Photo Center, Infiniti Vehicles, G35. The first picture will show you the new trunk. It's slightly different.

looks like the original trunk lid to me....? square is there.
  • cybersolcybersol Member Posts: 91
The pic mentioned is indeed the original trunk lid. However, there were many posts over at freshalloy around a month or so ago about the sedan changes. I am reasonably confident that the sedan trunk lid will change with the introduction of sattellite and xenon standard sedans. Several (seemingly) different people on freshalloy have seperately confirmed that the trunk lid will change.

Trunk lid changes are supposedly to make it one piece and thus eliminate the square. This will also mean the current external release button is removed. The infiniti logo will also supposedly be larger and extend across 3/4 of the trunk, similar to other infiniti models.

    We shall see.

i recently purchased a G35 with all the features i desired except the wood trim option. the salesman stated that he believed the wood trim will soon be available as an accessory. has anyone heard or read whether the wood trim will be offered as an accessory item.
  • boomer23boomer23 Member Posts: 125
I am one of the few that have seen the new trunk lid. It was on a G35 that was used in an Infiniti focus group that I attended two weeks ago in Irvine, CA. The people running the focus group were all Infiniti employees. I was asked my opinions of the G35 sedan versus Audi A4, BMW 330i and Lexus IS 300 regarding styling and features. I was told that the newly styled trunk will be on G35's "on sale in October". The trunk is exactly as cybersol describes it. There is no external trunk release. There will be an internal trunk release button. IMHO, there is a utility factor to having an external release. This has to be weighed against personal opinions of style and the "newness" factor of the new design. Those who want the external release feature should decide quickly on a car already delivered to dealers or in transit. One person has reported seeing the new trunk design at a dealer in Northern Cal.

Regarding the wood trim, it can be ordered from Infiniti parts supply, or from Infinitiparts.net (http://g35accessories.com/catalog/wood_kits_193633_products.htm), for less money than the Wood option price. It is easily and quickly installed and can be done by the car owner.

So I stopped by peninsula infiniti on the way home from work today. In the back, still in their shipping plastic were the new G35s (at least 7). The trunk was changed exactly like I mentioned earlier.

Its funny because my wife didn't like the original back. Over 6 months ago she said if they just removed the square and made the lettering look like all the other infiniti's it would look so much better. Well, I took her to the dealership with me and she was so excited that infiniti did exactly what she said.

I think the new trunk lid looks better but its too bad they removed the external release. Also, I wish they would keep twilight blue, it is my favorite color.

thanks for lead on wood trim. many kits but only interested in oem kit that's available. with door handle piece and shiftier knob.have you read or seen whether the kits/products are high standard and match to factory installed or oe products also, is infinitiparts.net a separate or Infiniti company? finally, are the door trim pieces removed and replaced by wood. a new shiftier comes with wood i believe. thanks
  • boomer23boomer23 Member Posts: 125
I can't add much information for you, but maybe others can. I don't know anything about infinitiparts.net as far as their connection, if any, to Infiniti. I have read that the factory door trim pieces are removed and replaced by the wood pieces. Apparently, it is quite simple to do. Also, I read that the wood is only a thin veneer, though it is real wood. So you'll find that the part is actually plastic with a thin wood covering. Finally, I believe that the shifter trim is just a trim piece that attaches to the stock shifter. The stock factory trim piece is removed and you attach the wood trim piece.
  • techhawktechhawk Member Posts: 18
I've also read that the door handles are easy to replace and relatively inexpensive to buy. I do think I remember reading that the entire shifter knob has to be replaced, and the cost to order one is $200+ (?).

I just purchased a G35 with the Bose head unit. So far I like the sound. Two questions:

    1. The G35 owner's manual says not to use CD-R or CD-RW discs. I'm wondering if the problem is skipping due to the lower reflectance of the discs. (If so, I'll take my chances) or if the problem is that the disks jam in the changer mechanism. My salesman claims that CD-Rs are not the same thickness as commercial CDs. I haven't dug out the micrometer to find out, but I don't want to risk jamming the head unit. Have any of you successfully or unsuccessfully used CD-R or CD-RW in your G35?

    2. Are the Bose and non-Bose mechanical changer mechanisms manufactured by the same maker? I know the Bose has different amplifiers, but I'm wondering if the changers are different. I don't think Bose makes transports, so I'm assuming that they are OEMed from someone else.

    Thanks!

I just visited my dealer in Costa Mesa, CA. They have four G35 Sedans in the updated design that some fans are calling 2003.5.

Pictures at pages 4, 5 and 6 of my Pbase picture site:

    http://www.pbase.com/boomer23/my_g35&page=4

Check more details at Freshalloy.com's G35 forum site, under my recent post on this topic.

  • robmarchrobmarch Member Posts: 482
should be the same thickness...but watch out if you put paper or other labels on them. the heat can cause the label to delaminate, and get very sticky, and get stuck in a slot type of player. I think this is what the warnings are for. If you use non-labeled CDR's you should only have to worry about the reflectance issue, which is your problem, not theirs, since they warned you.

I would think you should be ok, though.

    Good luck!
  • bhoughtonbhoughton Member Posts: 10
Guess I'll be brave and try one. I will load all the other discs first, though :-)

I looked at the Wood trims at g35accessories.com and i am curious to know if anyone ever tried one of those. What i mean to ask is, if anyone purchased those stuff..did they put them in themself or did they have the service department do it. any help would be appreciated
  • palmergpalmerg Member Posts: 40
I looked too. The wood looks nice but it seems that the pieces don't replace molded components they are glued to them. So I just don't know if I would like that look. Its really hard to tell but I don't think I'll plop down 200 bucks to find out if I like it better than the stock interior components. At least not until I've seen it up close.

    Hi,
I've had my G35 since April. I presently have 6 CD-R's in my disc changer. I change them frequently and have not had any problems.
  • stsurbrookstsurbrook Member Posts: 285
You can ask "sjred". He has purchased a wood trim kit (don't know who from) and has pictures posted on the web. You may want to try a search in this board.

Anybody have any info about what looks to be metallic gauges in the 2003.5 sedans? I've seen pics and the gauges clearly look either white or metallic, and I've heard nothing about this change.
  • palmergpalmerg Member Posts: 40
Thanks for all the great pictures. I really like the new lid. Liked the old one too and I will miss the trunk lid switch. Anyway, am I correct in assuming that there is no key access into the trunk? It looks that way from the pictures I've seen so far. Can anyone confirm this? I suppose a remote access isn't the worst thing. Would just like to know.

    Gary
  • coolpop36coolpop36 Member Posts: 65
That's right, the new trunk design will allow for remote access or interior access only - no key.

the trunk lid new and old was always remote ( no key). i have the oldest lid and frankly i like it better, both look nice.

i heard that xenon lights will be standard soon. will the base price increase as a result. also, i read xenon lights burn out faster. has anyone heard this or otherwise.
  • palmergpalmerg Member Posts: 40
first post 6233 contains a link to some mods for 2003.5. Xenons are included and the price was adjusted up accordingly.

Had not heard about early burnout for Xenon. You have made me curious, I'll let you know if I find anything.

Yeah, I actually liked the older lid a little better myself. It was pretty distinctive. The new one is OK but not a vast improvement. I didn't hear a hue and cry about the old one so I wonder why they made the change? Cost? Could get reliable supplier for manual switch? who knows its done.

    ciao,

I'm curious now. How DID the original trunk lid work. Since it didn't have a key was it such that you only unlocked the lid with the remote and then had to pop it open using the trunk latch handle? Or did the trunk pop open with the remote and the rear handle is only a grab handle without a latch. At any rate, it looks like the newer trunk operation now resembles my own G20 trunk lid. It unlocks and pops open using the remote or the electrically powered dash mounted switch. I like the way it operates and haven't missed not having a key hole or latched handle back there at all.

I'm also curious about Xenon life span. I had heard somewhere that they were supposed to last much longer then typical halogens. If not, that would be a huge argument against having them considering their cost.
  • palmergpalmerg Member Posts: 40
    I think :
Car locked - open trunk with remote key fob or from switch in cockpit
Car unlocked - open trunk with fob, cockpit switch or push button switch under Infiniti logo

...are designed to last far longer than halogen bulbs. "Life of the car" is the goal the Germans used. As with anything made by man, some are going to fail sooner than design-life time frames, but most owners will never, ever need to concern themselves with the lights.

Can anyone tell me what criteria is used for deciding that a board remain open or closed? The 2003.5 G35 board was just closed without a reason except to say that there are a lot of other G35 lists that are available. I know that a job like that is not the easiest in the world but I'm just curious if there is a standard justification for closing a dicsussion thread. It seems to me that having a place where focused disscussion can be achieved is much better than lumping all posters into a huge mass so it becomes the virtual tower of babel. IMHO

Thanks. Called infinti and they told me that the error has been fixed in production so any cars being delivered now and in the future won't have this problem.

When I bought my 02 Maxima SE, I kept the auto headlights on at all time. After awhile, though, I got sick of them coming on and off in dark spots. I figured it was probably a bit rough on them.

I turned the auto off now and hopefully this will make them last longer.

I went to look at a couple G's today and found out from Sales Rep Pat at Devon Infiniti in Fairfield Connecticut that an AWD G35 6sp manual will be coming out in June 03. He said that production will start in April 03. Has anyone else heard of this? Thanks...
  • patpat Member Posts: 10,421
Gary, I don't know where that happened, but it is true that we find it better to keep broader topics available and - for the most part - try to avoid the very specific titles such as you quote. The reason for this is that since there are bazillions of discussions throughout the Town Hall, keeping similar conversations under one heading makes it easier for folks to keep up with that which interests them.

The point can be argued either way, but this is the way that the Town Hall has felt works the best.

Just an FYI on this recall issue. I had my Des Plat (all the goodies but NAV)G in to have the cd player head unit replaced (skipping, mistracking issues reported in earlier post). The Service Manager said they would do the fuel line check/repair while they did the head unit change out. I was not even aware of the program and it did not add any time to the original expected time. My G did not have a fuel line problem. So, two birds with one stone and no problems found ... also new changer works great ... plays CD-R's with no problem.

    Happy Driving

Here is how the original trunk lid works:

The button on the key fob pops the trunk open at any time (except when the key is in the ignition).

If the passenger's door is unlocked, you can also open the trunk with the electric release button hidden in the notch of the trunk handle on the trunk lid.

There is no inside release button.

The outside trunk release is a handy feature when the car is unlocked and the trunk is closed. When you are washing the car without the key in your pocket, you can pop open the trunk to dry under there without having to go around the car to hit the trunk release switch near the steering wheel.
  • jtbmn1jtbmn1 Member Posts: 10
any knowledge as to why the trunk is changing? i have the original design and i like the fact that i can open the trunk manually when the doors are unlocked. i also like the more discrete look of the orignal.what benefits or detriments have you seen or heard as a result of the trunk change? the change is strange, or is my mind just blind?
  • stebustebu Member Posts: 204
So, there was an electric release button. I can see where that is handy in some circumstances. I think anyone would also find the dash switch very helpful. I use it frequently to allow access to the trunk to someone standing outside the car. It's nice to have since many times the persons hands are full with whatever they are putting in the trunk. Plus, it gives me convenient and total control of the lid from inside the car. But, mainly I use it for myself so I don't have to fumble with the remote on exit. This way I can set the door locks before I get out and only have to close the trunk and walk away.

I suspect the trunk change was a cost saving measure more then anything. Otherwise they would have just added the dash switch. I don't think the trunk looks particularly better/worse either way.
  • boomer23boomer23 Member Posts: 125
It's anyone's guess as to why they changed the trunk design. The original design was identical to the Japanese Skyline, which I assume is continuing with the design. Opinions about the change that I have read are certainly mixed.

Maybe they were trying to appeal to American tastes, which are actually more conservative than most people like to think. I doubt if it was cost-driven, but maybe they save a few bucks on each one, since it is a simpler, one-piece design.

Regarding releasing the trunk lid from inside the car, you can do that with the original design, but you would have to take the key out of the ignition and press the fob switch.

I agree that there is utility in having an external release, and I like it. Probably the best of both worlds would be to have both internal and external releases.
