Can you buy Homelink (TM) recievers for your outlets at home depot..

The Coupe has a "micropolished" intake (otherwise the same as the sedan's), dual exhaust, and a more aggressive ECU program. That accounts for the 20hp. It also makes the coupe require 91 octane. (For the sedan, it's recommended, but it is able to run 87 for extended periods.. I've heard bad stories of running a tank of 87 in the coupe.)
  • dane4dane4 Member Posts: 107
Agree with Ryoken and others about where the extra 20 come from... On the Motortrend Car of the Year show they phrased it "... This same excellent powerplant in the Coupe delivers 20 more horsepower from a full dual exhaust and a higher state of tune"

But this brings up another question I've had for a while... They say "Full Dual Exhaust" but if you look at images beneath the G35 Coupe, the headers lead to a single pipe that then branches off to two two exhaust pipes at the rear.

Although I could see a large advantage in increasing exhaust flow and decreasing back bressure by adding a second means of "escape" isn't a "Full" dual exaust one that has two complete exhaust lines leading from the headers to the back of the car?

I realize the cost advantage of doing it the way Infiniti has done it (one catalytic converter and premuffler etc) but I remember a long time ago talking to an SAE engineer about headers and him explaining to me that header pipes were higher performance than a simple exhaust manifold because you could keep the length of each manifold pipe the same and prevent "pulsing"? of exhaust from one cylinder effecting another. Having two seperate exhaust lines for each bank of cylinders had the same advantageous effect, preventing pressure wave "reflections" in the exhaust pipe downstream of the header from effecting the other, in addition of course to freer flow...

Curious as to if a "real" full dual exhaust would make an even larger difference, or if it would be minimal and useless compared to the added cost.

    Have a good one all!

    You are so correct,

A "real" dual exhaust leading from both headers would make a nice difference (+10 - 12 bhp). Opening the intake more would help even more (+10 bhp).

A dual exhaust originating at one header sounds funny (maybe +5 bhp)? Why even do this?

I do not believe for one second these engines can produce 20 additional bhp based on Nissan ECU "tuning" and a feau dual exhaust leading from one header. The number "280" sounds good from a marketing perspective.

Nissan Z, Nissan Altima 3.5, Infinity G35 Coupe and Sedan...all the same engine. Why not throw in an I35? Talk about reuse.

Thanks for your answers. It will help with my mods. I plan to get my baby to a true 290 (+/- 10) bhp once out of the Infinity Dealer. Am a little scared of voiding the warranty and need to be careful.

B4Z - Infinity is not proactive with dealing with the issues. If you are a proactive consumer, they will take action and correct the problems. To their credit, they do fix the brake recall immediately (even if not sent to consumers yet). I got pulled over because the brakes lights did not engage and Infinity took the car the next day. They offer a nice loaner G35 and not some Ford Escort (or worse) Enterprise Rent A Car. No questions asked. No Hassle. The loaner is better than my car. I asked them to trade. No deal.

Infinity/Nissan is still not producing a recall for the front brake pads, but issues a TSB for the rear pads due to "squealing." Want to bet the corporate attorneys carefully worded this TSB? Look for one regarding the front pads soon!

    Thanks for the info.

Seems that brakes are becoming a major problem.
Lots of warping issues with both the domestics and offshore sourced vehicles.

Both my Intigue and Impala have had warped rotors.

Brakes pads should last more than 10K miles.

I would think 40K for a auto equipped car and more than that for a manual should be expected.

I have 42K on the original pads on the Impala.
205K on 3 sets with my manual camaro.
  • msisengmsiseng Member Posts: 369
You are correct. Look in the other edmunds.com forums or freshalloy.com and you will see a lot of owners are experiencing brake issues. One poster got Infinity to pay for the front pads even though the TSB is not out at this time. Infinity is paying for mine at 6,600 miles. I paid a lot for this car and expect it to be safe. Am sure many of us feel the same way.

What is Infinity thinking by NOT issuing a recall yet? People could get hurt and I hope Infinity/Nissan does the ethical thing. Do they think all these people are "making-up" the brake pad and warping rotor issue? People are crying for help and I hope someone at Infinity/Nissan takes immediate action before a life is lost needlessly.

Does anyone have any ideas regarding the possibility of a self installed Wood Accent Kit for a 4dr Nav. G35. I am aware that these kits are most, if not all, flat kits and do not take into consideration the possible curves of the dash.

Nevertheless, they do cost a fraction compared to dealer prices. I guess the question is....do G35 Wood Accent kits (from the dealership) come with a superior Wood Accent Kit that is round and looks as if it was installed by manufacturer or do they just get a flat kit and install it themselves.

Anyone out there with Wood Accent care to comment and/or compare. I am trying to avoid getting the Wood Accent to learn at the time of delivery that it sucks and looks obviously added at the last minute.

I am not to crazy about the "aluminum" interior but I do have the vehicle high in my list thanks to the spacious rear seats and obvious speed and handelling.
  • mrman_3k3mrman_3k3 Member Posts: 17
I saw a G35 with the wood kit at the dealer and must say it looks very nice. I like the look of the wood and the aluminum colored dash.
  • frozefroze Member Posts: 40
I too am interested in sprucing up the interior with a wood kit, so I went to my dealer in Tulsa to see what they looked like, and believe it or not, out of 8 or 10 G35s on the lot not a one had the wood kit. I wonder why. I saw 3 different ads in Motor Trend ranging in price from a little over $100 to well over $200. Cheaper kits were 9 pieces up to more than 20 for more expensive kits. I assume they were all flat kits. Also, any suggestions on what color goes best with the willow interior would be appreciated.

thanks for the nice comments. Im not here to inflame people :)

However, my rear breaks are starting to squeal in reverse (I know sounds wierd). So if the breaks fail the lack of break lights from the defective switch really wont make a difference :)
    (thats a joke gentlemen)

A couple of posters mentioned the questions about the adaptive transmission. There is a discussion on freshalloy about this. I have found that when I start to drive and get on an on ramp, essentially nothing happens..sorta like turbo lag. Later, the car drives fine.

I spoke to my service manager about this (he is the one bright spot at my dealership). He stated that when the tranny fluid is cold, the transmission will not function well until it is warmed up. This will take several miles of driving. Ive never heard of this before, but it seems to fit.
  • msisengmsiseng Member Posts: 369
Your service guy sounds very good. He is right. The new adaprive transmissions require a few miles before they are rendered effective. Sounds like you can ask him more questions and get the real answers for us all!
  • sailoverfuelsailoverfuel Member Posts: 82
Someone out there must have wood accent. Is it rounded when it comes from the manufacturer? Or just flat as those after market kits on the internet?

There are flat kits with over 20pcs that cover most areas of interest...the doubt is the center console and how it wraps around and the possible odd look of flat over rounded finish.

    Hum!
  • peeetepeeete Member Posts: 136
I think what the service manager was talking about and the adaptive issue are two seperate things. He is basically saying that when the tranny is cold, it effectively operates in an non-performance mode (based on my experience) until the fluid warms up. Then, the adaptive settings will come into play. I specualte that the tranny is designed this way to protect from cold start road racing. Ive never noticed it on other cars.

    Or an updated 2003?

My VIN ends with 06xxx, and the mfg date is 9/02. I'm finding it hard to believe that they revised the G35 sedan after only making 6000 of them. Taking it to 6 digits (306xxx), I find it hard to believe they've already made 300K of these. I do have the Xenon headlights, and the Infiniti lettering is spread out over the trunk (with no handle).

What I am fearing is that my G35 was rebuilt. It had 100 miles on it when I bought it *new* in April '03 from the dealer. Please tell me that Infiniti didn't con me. They wouldn't do that, right?

After 2000 miles, it's still a blast to drive. Only minor problems with creaking windows and a jumping wiper, for which there are TSB's I'll have addressed at my first oil change.
  • cheerioboy26cheerioboy26 Member Posts: 412
You need to look at 6 digits. The 2003 version, like mine, is 014xxx, build date 5/02, delivery late June 02. The 2003.5 version has a VIN, like yours, of 3xxxxx. So you have about the 6xxx copy of the 2003.5, built 9/02. Seems reasonable as I think they started selling them around that time, and they sell about 3K per month. Depending on when in Sept. 02 it was built it may not have arrived at the dealer until November.

I just looked at my dealer's website (Coleman, Bethesda MD) and they still have one 2003, VIN 023814. The rest are 2003.5.
  • corkfishcorkfish Member Posts: 537
Have any of the car magazines reviewed the new six speed sedan? I'm curious to see how much of an improvement it is over the automatic ( which I didn't like at all).

Can anyone please recap the differences in the 2003 and the 2003.5? Are the 2003 much sought after vs. the 2003.5 or vice-versa?
  • ryokenryoken Member Posts: 291
    Changes include:

    * Various fixes for early production problems (A/C compressor noise, touchy brakes, etc.)
    * Trunk lid cosmetic change (INFINITI name spread wide across a smooth trunk, external handle removed)
    * Added interior trunk release switch
    * Xenon's now standard
    * Added 12v power outlet on passenger side of center console
    * Dropped Twilight Blue color, replaced with Carribean Blue
    * Added Embroidered Infiniti logo on front seats
    * Added chrome bezels around some of the radio/climate control knobs
    * Cargo net is now full-width instead of half-width
    * Seat memory controls moved from driver's door to driver's seat
    * Factory pre-wiring for Sat radio didn't begin until March 2003 - so none of the 2003's have it, and many 2003.5's don't have it, either.

I may be missing some things here. The only reason I can think of why anyone would want a 2003 over a 2003.5 is the Twilight Blue color, but that's making a comeback in a couple of months for the 2004 model year (replacing Emerald Mist).
  • sailoverfuelsailoverfuel Member Posts: 82
    Got it!

I guess Fedlawman did not like it. I understand why...overkill. I think there is a happy medium to all this. If leather seats are lighter in color it diminishes contrast between wood and leather making the wood stand out LESS. Also, there is no need to purchase a 27 piece set.

A set with fewer pieces combined with a better match in colors will probably look clasier and low key.

I may be kidding myself? Just my opinon...this is why I would like to see a manufacturers version of this in the future
  • bmwdriver02bmwdriver02 Member Posts: 46
In the section of the build your own G35, the colors listed are Brilliant Silver, Ivory Pearl, Desert Platinum, Black Obsidian, Twilight Blue :), Garnet Fire, and Caribbean Blue. I thought they were getting rid of caribbean blue

but you can still get one on an '03 even if its just the ones on the lot. Why would they remove that until the new MYs are on the lots?
  • ryokenryoken Member Posts: 291
Nope. Two blues now available. They dumped Emerald Mist.

I just got my G35 Sedan back from 30k service yesterday... Brakes 7/32, Tires 8/32... Rotors are in spec, and they performed the brake switch campaign.

I don't have the receipt with me at the moment, but the items that were above the mundane minor service were things like replace Diff fluid, purge/refill/bleed brake fluid, balancing tires as an addition to just rotating them, replacing the dust filters, flushing coolant system, and just a host of other things to numerous to mention.

Total bill was $655 and change which I didn't feel was too outlandish for major service (My old Toyota 4Runner was very close to this and they didn't do the brake fluid or things like replacing the wiper blades)

And as usual, service experience was top-flight :)

I got my service book stamped the car was washed and the inside was vacuumed (they don't normally vacuum for other service visits so maybe that's part of major service heh) and I was on my way.

One thing mentioned in the service report was that the ECU was checked and reset. I noticed that as I was getting on the freeway, the car waited noticeably longer to shift than I was used to, which translated into a nice little kick in the pants as the RPMs climbed over 4 grand before shifting :) By the time I got home after a few errands it seemed much more sedate (I'm a fairly sedate driver "most" of the time :) )

Not certain if anyone else has gone thru their 30k service so I decided to post this and let you know what you should expect when it rolls around.

In truth, I could have done alot of the things myself and saved a good amount of money, but free time isn't as forthcoming these days :)

    Have a good one all!
  • frozefroze Member Posts: 40
In my opinion you've been had! Read your owner's manual. Does it say anything about replacing brake fluid or diff. fluid at 30K miles? I don't think so. Dealers will gladly take your money for all kinds of services not recommended by the Mfg. if you let them. Again, read you owners manual and do what it says, not what the dealer says.
  • mrman_3k3mrman_3k3 Member Posts: 17
I bet this has been thouroughly talked about before, but since I am new and still trying to read through these forums please be patient.

Anyway, I wanted to know if the Aero Package is all that is needed to get the 0.26 drag and zero rear lift? Also is the Aero Package part of the Aero Kit? If this could be explained that would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you!
  • dane4dane4 Member Posts: 107
    I've been had?

Many people might argue that I'd also been had because of the fact that I bought a car that cost more than 20 thousand :)

I would almost always go by the interval the dealer suggested rather than the owners manual. You know why? :) Because I think the owners manual is a treatise on how inexpensive the car is to operate, and is written as such... Have you ever read a Toyota owners manual? there is a section on recommended intervals where they have Light/Normal/Extreme use... If you look at what Toyota claims is "extreme" use for something like a manual transmission, it is listed as 100 shifts per hundred miles driven. I challenge anyone to stay in the light duty category with those stipulations! :) (unless you live in someplace really flat, like Kansas, and rarely stop for anything)

Though the dealerships underlying principle is profit margin, and mine is car longevity, our desires enjoy an elective "affinity" much like Calvanism and Capitalism... A kind of happy coincidence which in the end serves both well. We both would like to service the car at an increased frequency, in the end, better for the car, though our motives are vastly different.

Replacing and bleeding the brake system of my car might be a bit excessive, but I think it represents more good, than harm (particularly since my Infiniti dealer is very good about things like replacing interior parts with an apology if they scratch them) and this even when I thought the scratch was insignificant. In a phrase; I trust their integrity. Talk about an uncommon circumstance!

Some months back, they also repaired a rather significant scratch on the rear bumper that I told them truthfully I know had happened during service, even though it was something that EASILY could have happened at a parking lot or anywhere other than the infiniti dealership, they sent it off to the body shop for me and had it perfectly repaired, no questions asked. Try THAT one at your Toyota or Honda dealership :)

Bleeding the brake lines for air is something that I would think should be done periodically... If you're doing that, why not replace the fluid? You're already well into that process anyway? In the military, working around Submarine Nuclear Reactors, rarely could anything ever be "reused", if a flange was removed for inspection, all new bolts had to be used when it was replaced. You couldn't even retorque an existing bolt, all had to be removed and the new one's torqued to the correct value. This wasn't done to waste money, but to ensure safety by adhering to the approved process. Maybe Infiniti has Nuke Engineers running their service bays hah! :)

I remember with my first car, A Mechanic friend told me that I should drain and refill the tranny and diff after the first 1000 miles. Not to replace the fluid, but to inspect the magnetic plugs for excessive shavings and metal powder and to clear them from the "system" His argument was that if there was a manufacturing or assembly defect, it would show up early by screening for this. He wasn't bilking me for extra work either, because he showed me how to do it myself. (although he may have been hawking redline products because he recommended them *laughing*)

I think the bottom line is I had no problem with it because if they hadn't of done it, I would have. Obsessive people rarely have a problem with someone being as obsessive as they. Particularly when it concerns something that has value to them :)

Now, if they had yanked out my windshield and put a new one in and charged me for that, I would have said WHAT THE?!, but changing my diff/tranny/brake fluid? not even close :)

Next time I may do those things myself though, since it's a moderate job that involves NO fiddling with the car's electronics...

    Have a good one!

Looks like I have a hybrid between the 2003 and the 2003.5. Maybe the previous owner made changes? In any case, the car is back after two weeks in the shop. New brakes, new A/C, new seat track, full detail, etc.... After much aggravation, it is ready to rock now.

Going to try a new dealer next week for service. The service manager took a lot of time on the phone with me and I am not even his client..yet. Anyone in the Washington, DC area looking for a recommendation, feel free to email me.

    Dane4,

There is nothing wrong with changing the diff/tranny/brake fluid. If you had to pay for this and it gives you peace of mind, then who cares?
  • ryokenryoken Member Posts: 291
The "Aero Package" gives you the 0.26 Cd and zero rear lift. It consists of the rear spoiler and some underbody diffusers. Note that it requires you to get the Sport-tuned Suspension package.

The "Aerodynamic Body Kit" gives you the rear spoiler and the ground-effects eye candy, gives you body-color bits around the bottom instead of the black plastic bits. It does not give you the zero rear lift or reduce drag, as this kit has the same rear spoiler, but no underbody diffusers.

It is possible to have both kits. There's a 4-piece body kit w/o the rear spoiler that's sold in conjunction with the Aero Package.
  • ryokenryoken Member Posts: 291
What makes you think you have a hybrid? (I'm curious.)

Some of the '03.5 parts are available for the '03's, such as the second power outlet and interior trunk release switch.
  • mrman_3k3mrman_3k3 Member Posts: 17
Thank you for clarifying that. I would be getting a 6MT sedan so it already comes with the sport tuned suspension.

Does anyone know if Infiniti is going to install/support the new Digital radio format? I am NOT talking about XM or Sirius.

This is for the same radio stations you receive now...only the signal would be in digital and therefore supposedly better. Plus AM is supposed to sound similar to FM.
  • ryokenryoken Member Posts: 291
As with most things, I imagine you'll see this in aftermarket equipment first, then it'll start coming out in factory radios. I doubt there will be any retrofit kits, you'll probably be on your own to upgrade with something aftermarket for an existing car.

  • msisengmsiseng Member Posts: 369
Based on the description differences between the 2003 and the 2003.5, I said mine is a hybrid because it has the following:

Am using portions of your list from above...

    * Trunk lid cosmetic change (INFINITI name spread wide across a smooth trunk, external handle removed) - NOT DONE, STILL ON EXTERNAL HANDLE
    * Added interior trunk release switch - NO SWITCH
    * Xenon's now standard - HAS XENON'S
    * Added 12v power outlet on passenger side of center console - HAS THIS OPTION
    * Added Embroidered Infiniti logo on front seats -DOES NOT HAVE THIS
    * Added chrome bezels around some of the radio/climate control knobs - HAS THIS ADDITION
    * Cargo net is now full-width instead of half-width - FULL NET IS ON THE CAR
    * Seat memory controls moved from driver's door to driver's seat - CONTROLS ARE ON DRIVER'S SEAT

The car is in the first 2,XXX produced, so the previous owner must have made changes. I made a lot more in the past few weeks and am looking into a custom shop to make intake and exhaust modifications. Anyone with suggestions (Washington, DC area) please post if you know of a good shop.

    Thank You.

It sounds like a 2003 except for the full cargo net. Looking at that list,

    1 and 2 are consistent with 2003.
    3. was an option for 2003. I have them on my 2003. I've actually only seen one G at night w/o them.
    4. This is not the power source inside the console. This is near the passenger's feet; directly opposite from the driver's side.
    5. Consistent with 2003.
    6. I have some sort of metallic-like bezel around my 2003, might not be chrome though.
    7. Yes, that is an option. I have the 1/2 wide net.
    8. My seat controls and memory controls are on the driver's seat. 2003.

I took delivery one year ago this week. Out of the 8 items, 5 are certainly standard or an option on 2003s, one was changed (cargo net), and the other two (radio bezels and power source) I'd ask you to double check.

What are the last six digits of your VIN? If it's 0xxxxx you have a 2003 (mine is 014xxx.) If you have a 3xxxxx it is a 2003.5.
  • msisengmsiseng Member Posts: 369
Thanks for the assessment and further clarfication. The number is under 3,000 (002XXX). For various reasons, I do not want to post the exact VIN on the boards.

After careful assessment, I found the cargo net to read: "Subaru"! It works very well much to my surprise. The "half-net" was placed on top of the full-sized spare tire.

I misread the power source in Ryoken's post. One does not exist near the passenger's feet.

Guess we have future classics like the 1964 Mustang and the 1964.5 Mustang? Or is it 1965/1966? Memory is fading....

One can only hope these become the car that finally launches Infinity.... Prices for used G35's are holding firm and are very close to invoice. In some cases the used coupes are selling close to sticker value. Was hoping to find a Skyline emblem hidden somewhere in there as one is advertised on Ebay.com for a crazy amount of money.

I know from reading other posts that you are in the DC area. Are you going to the Infinity meet this weekend?
  • cheerioboy26cheerioboy26 Member Posts: 412
Are you talking about the meet on 7/5 I just saw on freshalloy.com? Not sure about that one yet. I will probably go if I am in town. I won't be able to make the meet this weekend - I am going to Richmond with my wife to attend the IRL race.

Your G is older than mine! Check the driver's door jamb for the build date. Probably 03/02 or so. Didn't mean to ask you for your whole VIN ;) The digits you gave are all anyone needs.

I will probably get a full size net soon. Try freshalloy for more info on skyline badges etc.

Just took my 2003 G35 (with 20k miles) to the Infiniti service department this morning.

The problem I've been experiencing is that I could not get the transmission out of park. This has happened, briefly, a couple of times over the last week or so. Yesterday afternoon when I pressed on the brake to start the car, the brakes made a funny noisy locking sound, and the ABS, VDC, and engine lights all showed on the dash, and I could not get the car out of park. It took me about 15 minutes of restarting the car and pumping on the brakes to get it out of park, but all of the dash lights stayed on while driving. So I called and got an Infiniti appointment this morning, and when I took it in, the service rep told me that Infiniti has a recall for the car for this problem, but that consumers have not yet been notified. He said some people have had to be towed in for this problem, and he's seen it occur at 600 miles and 30k miles, while some G35s never experience the problem. The rep said it is a switching warning signal recall, which locks up the autoshift. So I thought I'd post it to alert others about this problem. The rep said these are "first model years kinks" they need to get out.

Also, my CD (#3) won't eject, and they are supposed to order me another Bose CD/system and install it since Infiniti dealer doesn't do audio work.

I haven't had any major problems other than those mentioned above, and love the car.
  • msisengmsiseng Member Posts: 369
Thanks for the info. There seem to be a lot of first year "kinks."

Can you get the exact recall number? So far, I know of three other recalls to date and MANY Technical Service Bulletins.

My service advisor indicates another recall is forthcoming for front brake pad premature wearing. So far, nothing in the mail....

You may also want to cross-post this on the "Problems and Solutions" board if you have not already. I am sure many will benefit.

I have now nearly 4k miles on my odometer (thanks to a 2,400 mile road trip over the past six days) and thought it was a good time to provide some brief comments to update you on my experience so far with my G35.
The car (2003.5 leather 6MT) is a superb tourer - much better than I bargained for when I leased it. It is also giving me very good mileage (around 25/26 mpg on the highway, about 21 mpg city). It is fairly quiet even when cruising around 80 mph, and was very stable even in a pretty violent thunderstorm.
I got my first oil change done yesterday at the Infiniti dealer. I had booked the appointment about a week ahead. In addition to the oil change, my car was washed and vacuumed at my request -- apparently without additional charge (the total bill came to about $32). I asked the service guys about the several TSBs I have read about (seat, brake lights, etc.) even though I do not have any problem yet. They said they checked and could not find anything applicable for my car!:) Luckily, I do not have any problems so far.
However, I do notice that the odometer and, perhaps, the speedometer have some error -- my estimate is -5%. I asked the dealer to look into it next time, even though the error works to my advantage!:)
I asked the dealer about the longevity of brakes. I was assured that the dealership (in Des Moines, Iowa) had not had a single case of premature brake wear even though several cars they sold have about 30k miles on them. Apparently, the tires (all season) also wear well and seem to work well in winter. Even if there is a little exaggeration, I am encouraged.
All in all, my experience so far belies the noise made in these forums about all the different things wrong with the G35. Touch wood!:)

p.s.: My recent trip was to Houston where my son had a scary car accident. He, almost miraculously, survived unscathed; his (my former) car (1993 Camry SE - 5MT) was not so lucky -- had to be totaled. We went in two cars and left one (1998 Maxima SE MT, my daily driver before I got the G35) for him to use.

Glad to here your son is ok. Seems like you took a trip from my former neck of the woods (ISU Alum) to my current. I always liked Jordan Motors. Even though they did not deal that much on price they had excellent service. Glad you like your G on hope it conitues to serve you well.

This site allows one to print full TSBs. You need a subscription to view these on the Nissan/Infinity site.

A subscription is not necessary here:

    http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/problems/tsb/

Click on the make and model of the car and you see the actual TSB that the dealer gets. Ensure you word your complaint exactly as stated on the TSB for max. results.
