The deep growl is actually coming from the throttle body. (similar sound when a straight cone filter is installed)

I can't see this modification doing too much harm since it is similar to putting a cold air intake or cone filter.
  • jimbeaumijimbeaumi Member Posts: 620
But aren't those modifications as well? The earlier poster raised a legitimate concern: the computer is used to an air flow dictated by the stock air filter. Anything different changes the mixture, yes?
  • 5port5port Member Posts: 395
The change in air flow is picked up by the air flow sensor and the computer adjusts the air/fuel ratio for (hopefully ) more power. The is the same thing that happens when you install a K&N Filtercharger in the stock air box.

And maybe I'll do some drilling too.

Does anybody know the torque settings when installing spark plugs for the GT? Thanks!
  • 5port5port Member Posts: 395
You should be able to find the spark plug torque settings at this URL. It is a on-line shop manual for Hyundai cars :

    Hi:

Does anyone know where I can find a full size (not the lip) 2002 Elantra GT rear spoiler and how much the approx. cost might be.

For music lovers, I have installed the Blaupunkt Tampa Bay CD51 receiver and Blaupunkt IDC-A09 IN DASH 5-CD changer. They fit nicely and colors perfectly coordinate with the interior and purple dash. The units plus installation was around $400 and is worth it. Might post some picture soon.

I am going to upgrade to a cd w/ mp3 capability. It'll probably be the JVC SX980. It seems to have good reviews. I've seen mixed reviews for the less expensive offerings from Aiwa and Jensen. However, they may provide more value for the dollar. Don't think I'll go for the Pioneer model (7400MP I believe) as its a bit pricey for my liking even though I've seen some rave reviews. Good to have choices though!

Does anyone have the factory roof racks installed? If so, are they noisy?
  • hfunsolhfunsol Member Posts: 3
    Hi there.

Reading above, it seems that a lot of people have taken out thier old CD player. If you have one laying around and are willing to ship it, let me know what you would like for it.

    Thanks.

I recently had a Donmar "Funsport" pop up sun roof installed in a 2002 Elantra. They did have to modify the map light/sunglass housing by lowering it and trimming it out with some cloth trim. Looks ok, but they were not crazy about doing it. Be careful, the housing screws to a spot welded bracket in the roof and can't be cut. They did not have to move the dome light. It might also help to stay around when they are doing the installation. I did not, and had to argue with the installer to correct the housing because there first modification look bad. I may take a picture when the weather gets warmer so you can see the change. The sunroof works fine ,no leaks and opens easy. the reason I didn't go for electric is cost and we don't open it that often. the dealer wanted $1000.00 to put one in. That was the only thing I didn't like about buying the Elantra was, we wanted ABS brakes and the Sunroof, and in 2002 you could not get both by the factory.
  • dmickdmick Member Posts: 28
Went to the dealer today and asked him to program an extra key fob I acquired for my Elantra. He said the security system (factory) will only accept two. Anyone know this to be true?
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
That's what my dealer told me too. My Grand Caravan will accept four (but I only have two--that's enough to lose).

Just bought an '02 GLS demo car with a casette player. I don't even know why they sell them this way anymore. If you've swapped out your stock CD player, and want to get rid of it, please let me know. Thanks!!!
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
I'd prefer a cassette + CD unit, as in the Sonata. But the Hyundai unit is quite pricey. There are a couple of aftermarket units that would fit--someday I'll break down and buy one.

I now have 1,300 on my O3 GT. Getting over 30 MPG in mixed, light footed driving (40% city, 60% highway). The shifting is a little notchy at times, but overall I am very pleased. I installed a Tiberon 19.2mm Tiberon sway bar which is supposed to dramatically inprove cornering. Alas I also broke my right arm just before install & can drive a stick for 4 weeks; so I will have to wait to test it out!

Keys on 03 Elantras can be made at anylock shop --they do not have a microchip & cost $3-5.

Cheap way to improve the steering wheel feel: The steering wheel can be nicely upgraded with a $35 leather cover from Wheelskins.com. It fits perfectly & makes wheel about 50% thicker, gripper, & softer. Stitching it on is a bit tedious, but not terribly difficult -- just be sure to count the # of holes on BOTH sides of the cover as you go around the spokes. Takes about 45 minutes =/- 10 minutes.

If you are at all interested in Elantra up grades, I urge you to check out elantraxd.com for extensive information on Elantra performance and modifications.

I've mentioned this last year on this board but needs to be mentioned again. If you drive a 5 spd GT the best mod is to buy a B&M short shift kit. It changes the feel of the shift to a tighter and crisper pattern. Reduces throws by 40%. Only cost $118 but will be money well spent. Install was done by me in the dark and took about 45 min. You can use the stock knob or the metal knob that comes with it. Shift boot fits fine.

     Available at JEGS for $118. Kit B&M # 45119

Is there any data on forced induction kits and their performance increases for Elantra GTs? A Car that says GT should have more horses.
  • 5port5port Member Posts: 395
This company just started making Turbo kits for the Elantra Beta engine. They just opened a annex in the states and are getting established.

Not much detailed intsruction in the package but it requires removal of some door trims. How can I remove the trimmings without damage. Please give me detailed step-by-step description. Thanks. Mark

Has anyone had a hitch installed? I honestly haven't looked at the base of my GT to see what 'options' the frame has? I imagine there's a couple of holes on each side of the frame to attach the hitch? Just curious. I had a hitch priced out today for $150 at the dealer, but when speaking with the Rep he hadn't installed one on the Elantra yet. I'd rather do it myself if it's just a couple of bolts.

    Thanks, enjoy the drive.

Anyone installed a header on their 03 GT? Was it worth the money? ($430)
    Does it affect the warranty?

Where can I get the rear sway bar kit for better handling?

Anyone install the strut tower brace on the front and/or rear. Was this worth the money? ($85 each)

Just bought '03' GT with moon roof option only. No ABS, for $13995.00 out the door. (that's what I wrote the check for. Is that good?)

    Happy motorin'

Hi, I have a 2003 elantra GT. I decided to remove the intake that connects the air filter box to the resonator box. It was an easy mod. I feel that it increased power a little and it makes a louder sound. The filter box is open to the side of the battery and seems to be isolated form the engine. However, it does not get air directly form outside. It seemed that removing the resonator box and leaving the intake in would be a better mod. The resonator is located by the wheel well, and by removing the resonator, the intake would pick up air from outside. However, removing the resonator is kind of complicated. First, there is a screw that I cannot get to unless I remove a bunch of stuff. Second, the resonator box has a hose attached that loops around and ends up next to the engine and I have to loosen up a clamp which is also hard to reach.

My questions are: should I try to get the resonator box out, or shall I stick to the current, easy mod. Will removing the resonator make a big difference in getting colder air or is the filter box getting enough cool air? Also, why does the resonator have a hose connecting to it that loops up towards the engine? I could also try to attach a tube to the filter box that will end up at the wheel well. However, because of limited space it will be slightly narrower. Would this help?

    Thanks for the answers

I attached a receiver hitch to may car, elantra gt 2003. I order edone from the internet for about $90 shipped. I got mine from: etrailer.com

This is a class 1 hitch which is not designed for towing. I bought it to attach a bike rack.

It fits perfect. All you have to do is get under the car, remove a couple of bolts that are there for this purpose, clamp it to the loopy thingy below the license plate, and presto. Fifteen minutes
is all it takes. The htich comes with very clear instruction.

The removal is a snap. The screws that are difficult to get to actually are simple. All you have to do is remove the headlight assembly. Just remove the 2 wiring harnesses and the 2 bolts, then remove the assembly.

Second, I know that they make Cold Air Intakes for this car for around $150.00. I'm not showing my car so I'm not very concerned with appearances. However I found that using 2 inch PVC worked perfectly for making my own cold air intake. (I did paint it black). I used a K&N filter at the end which is inside the front fascia at the front of the fender well.

If you or anyone else is interested, I will provide the exact specs for making one including the K&N filter #. (I ordered it on line for $33. Again, it's not pretty but I'm not showing it)
The whole thing will cost about $41 including the filter. It will plug right into the existing flex tube coming off the throttle body using the same clamp.

Does anyone know how much more the engine vibrates with the aluminum crank pulley?

Also, I found the sway bar form an '03' Tib at a junk yard through the internet. The bar, bushing, caps, bolts, and shipping for $65. Check it out. Just type "used hyundai parts" under Google and start looking.
  • 5port5port Member Posts: 395
There are Cold Air intake kits on Ebay for a 94 to 97 Honda Accord that fit the Elantra going for $40-50 dollars. They include the filter.

I bought my Tib rear sway bar, bushings and new nuts from Jay Montigny for $75.

    So what did you save?
  • iml8iml8 Member Posts: 10
The cheapest one I see on Ebay is $41.99 plus $15.95 shipping/handling. (Brushed aluminum and *NOT* a K&N filter) With some diligence and patience, I suppose someone might find it cheaper.

So that is $57.84 minus$41 = savings of $16.84. PLUS it is custom fit right into the front fascia to get the coolest air available and is somewhat protected from the elements requiring less cleaning.

I priced a new one with all the stuff at around $130 from my local dealership. Did your $75 include shipping? I'm in MI so Jay would have to ship from CA.

Your cost $75.00 minus my cost of $65.00 = savings of $10.00

Total savings = $26.84 (uglier cold air tube but K&N filter, used swaybar). I still think I got a good deal.

I recently put a set of 16 x 6 American Racing Wheels style 193, 5 spokes, with 205/50 16" Kumho KH11 on my GT 4dr. I also dis-assembled the brake calipers and painted them red with High Temp engine paint.

First, the handling improved 3 fold.(I have yet to install the rear swaybar) It is a vast improvement with markedly quicker steering. Whereas before, the car was extremely reluctant to turn in and maintain a line while conering, and body roll was daunting, it now corners flatter and sticks to a line. Though it is still reluctant to turn in, it is far less so than before. I can't wait to install the swaybar. I expect it improve even more.

The Kumho tires are, so far, great. Very predictable at the limit. Very predicatable beyond the limit. I've had the car in a drift a couple of times. It is very stable and easily controlable. We'll see what happens after the swaybar.

The red calipers look pretty good behind the 5 spoke wheels.

Still waiting for the aluminum crank pulley to arrive from the (vehicle's) Homeland. (purchased through Shark Racing)
  • 5port5port Member Posts: 395
The Kumho 16" Kuhmo tires will increase handling limits while slowing the 0-60 times (been there done that). Changing the rear sway bar to the Tib bar was all I needed to have fun. Changes the character of the car completely.

    My mods so far:

    1) B&M short shift kit
    2) 03 Tib rear sway bar
    3) K&N panel air filter
    4) Two Tone Fiamm Horns
    5) Black 17" antenna
    6) Roadmax xenon low beams
    7) Fumoto oil change valve

Favorite two mods are the short shift kit and Tib sway bar. Car looks stock but is fun now! Enjoy.
  • iml8iml8 Member Posts: 10
Just installed the tib rear sway bar. Very, very simple installation.

On a tame road test, I don't see a tremendous difference. Not like when I changed to the 16 x 6 rims and KUHMO tires. (dyslexia and poor typing skills)

I did not change the "plastic" end links however. I did not see the there would be enough lateral or torsional stress on them to cause them to break. I guess I'll see about that. At this point, with the wheels and tires and the swaybar, I don't think I would change the camber setting. I have not noticed a tendency towards oversteer yet.

Got the tib pedal pads and footrest today. What a bargin. New from the dealer: $30. Tried to get them from junk yards but appearantly the word is out and there has been a run on them.

Fumoto valve is waiting in the PO Box. It seems maybe this may have been an impules purchase as the threads are deeper on the 03. Maybe simply the convenience will make it worth it. I never had a problem getting a little dirty changing oil but I own it now.

I'm considering the short shift kit, but I'm pretty happy with the shifter now. Not great but not rubbery like many others.

Has anyone found, 1: a "test pipe" to remove the back cat? 2: a performance muffler that doesn't hang low and have a ridiculously large tail pipe?

Are the performance increases worth the time and money?(I know about the emissions laws and possible warranty issues, but I'm just looking to "test" the cat.)

I'm still looking for anyone who has installed an aluminum crank pulley. It is supposed to free up horsepower, but I'm a little concerned about increased vibrations.

So far, love every mile I've put on it.

I'm thinking about buying a GT and have been reading all the reviews, which have been surprisingly positive. The only gripe some people have is that the center dash lights are green while the gauges over the steering wheel are the cool blue/purple.

Is there an aftermarket way to make the center dash lights blue/purple?
  • iml8iml8 Member Posts: 10
I have taken all of the dash panels out to install my XM Satelite system and also to check the very same thing that you are referring to. The lighting mechanism for the gauges is by something other than "plug in" light bulbs. I'm not sure what they call it. Someone will respond who does I'm sure. The center console has light bulbs that can be removed from the back of each of the console units.

I have not researched it very much further because the bulbs are clear but the lighting is a very muted greenish, which means that what appears white while unlit in the daylight actually has some coloring to it when illuminated from the rear. So, trying to find purple light bulbs or coloring the existing ones will likely not produce the look of the dash.

You will not find a better bargin on the market. You may have needs that this car cannot meet, but for what you get, it's awesome.

Guys I was told by my dealership after I bought my car that Hyundai no longer offers cruise control through the dealership, only when you order the car. All the quotes I have been getting are for like $350 plus tax. Doesn't that seem high for cruise control? I know on my old 95 Galant it was only $150 Thx
  • southpawbostonsouthpawboston Member Posts: 29
    ellandry,

you may be out of luck with getting a genuine hyundai cruise control unit if that's what your dealership said. but before exploring aftermarket solutions, i would ask one or two other hyundai dealerships if they would install the hyundai unit...and if so, maybe for less than you've been quoted. are your quotes for aftermarket units? that does sound high to me. if you do go with an aftermarket unit, make sure it's gauranteed to work smoothly and maintain an even speed. a while ago, i installed an aftermarket cruise control in my car (not my elantra) and you could feel the car speed up and slow down, very annoying. i ended up removing it and lived w/o cruise, until i got my elantra GT. the factory hyundai cruise control works flawlessly.

I'm trying to decide between 205/50s on 16" wheels or 205/45s on 17" wheels for my 2003 GT.

I like the look of 17"s better but don't know how rough the ride will get with 45 series tires.

Also, there should be more affordale choices with 16" tires since I'm guessing I'll have to buy a Z rating at 17" even if I don't need them.

Consumer Reports testing showed minimal increases in handling going from +1 to +2.

Please post your thoughts/experience with this.
    Thanks,

I am a member of a certain Hyundai Elantra forum and over there most of the people that have placed aftermarket rims on their Elantra's go with the 16's to avoid the rubbing.

But that is not to say some of them are not running 17's.. depends on how you drive, how you load up your car, and road conditions.

    Most recommended are:
    205/50 16's
    205/50 17's

    ElantraStan
  • alaputalaput Member Posts: 19
Thanks, ElantraStan. The other Elantra GT site I visited said if I go with 17"s max out with 205s with a 42-45mm offset to avoid rubbing the wheelwells in turns. Have you seen this site?

    http://egt.gwebworks.com/garage.shtml

There's also a handy calculator that tells you speedo discrepancy with your tire/wheel combo (e.g. while the 195/60-15s would read 75mph the 205/50-17s would read 78mph.)
  • jimpimmsjimpimms Member Posts: 81
You can avoid speedometer error by using the proper sized tires, based on overall tire diameter, available on every tire manufacturers' web site, or those of the major online tire distributors. The OE 195/60R15 tires are 24.2". To closely approximate this diameter, use 205/50R16 (24.1") or 205/45R17 (24.3"). The lower the aspect ratio, the stiffer the sidewall, and subsequently, the ride. The 17" tires are also much more susceptible to road hazards, and there is only a minimal increase in performance over the 16". IMO, the 17" wheels are visually better proportioned, but unless you plan to use larger diameter rotors, they look somewhat silly with all the daylight showing around the stock discs.

Bought a 2004 Elantra 5-door hatchback. Like the car very much. Trying to get 4 mud flaps from the dealer. The person there says they are on back order and he can't get them any sooner. He told me Hyundai has 2-3 sites in the USA where they manufacture these mudflaps. Is their such a shortage? Was he lying? Any suggestion??

Replaced the battery and now it don't work 2001 Elantra any suggestion
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
Replacing the battery (or old one wearing out) may have caused the remote to lose its programming. TSB 01-90-011 explains how to reprogram the remotes, but it doesn't seem easy for an owner to do. You can find the TSBs at http://www.hmaservice.com/webtech/default.asp.

Another thing to check is to make sure the battery is positioned properly--hard to tell with those button batteries.

My recently ordered metal dead pedal (foot rest) arrived today. The other pedals were ordered as a set first, but I didn't realize the dead pedal is ordered separately. Parts guy was surprised it is the same size as my standard plastic one, as the metal one is ordered for the Tiburon. Why is it that those of us on edmunds.com know more than some salemen or parts people?

Hello. I just bought a 2005 Hyundai Elantra GLS. I am thinking of purchasing a nose mask for my Elantra, or any other factory item that could help protect its paint. Does anyone have any experience with this category? If so, did you buy your accessory from the dealer? Thanks for your help.

I've done a quick search, but didn't find an answer. I am replacing the wheel rims on a 2004 Elantra GT. I need to know the tread pitch for the lug nuts so that I can get the right lug nuts for the new rims. Local dealers do not have that info, so they tell me; and am still awaiting response from Hyundai Motors. Does anyone here have that info.
