I have a 2001 Doublecab and just saw a 2002 with a cool looking roof rack. It looks similar to the one on the Frontier's so I'm assuming it comes from Toyota. Anyone know if it's after market or Toyota and what the price might be? I guess I could always ask the dealer where I saw it but I hate talking to those guys!

Dealer told me the roof rack will not be stock by the dealer, has to buy a new 2002 to get one, or drive up to freemont.

Saw a DC with a Thule rack, when called Thule, they said they do not suport DC with a roof rack.

Don't want to buy Yakima rack since i have two Thule Racks Systems. But there is one for Yakima.

    chiweiho:

I couldn't find the rack either. I apologize. The printed catalog has it, and I assumed it would be on the website, but it is a brand new product ( I already saw a doublecab with it, and it looks awesome, but I don't think it can carry that much weight). It's on page 49 of catalog 65AJ-01 and it shows two sizes for Toyotas:
    65"X40" p/n 47AU7551P and
    50"X45" p/n 47AU7550B
It consists of two sidebars and two crossbars made of 2" aluminum, powdercoated gray, with plastic feet to support it, just like the ones on the nissan's, minus the deflector. The manufacturer is Steel Horse Automotive, and its called Challenger Roof Rack.
    I hope this helps.

This is the Steel Horse web site, they are ok, seen a lot of products from them, but the web site is not very fast and current.

I read somewhere that the Thule and Yakima racks carry more weight because of where the towers are located. But then how high do i want to reach, gotta carry a 6 foot ladder to get to the stuff. Does look cool though.

Roberto, thanks for the info regarding the rack. will have to look at it when I get the cat.

BTW: I am getting the factory manuals for the 2001DC, I am getting the first two and not getting the third electrical book (funding). Wish i can put the book on the internet.

I live in San Diego. Tacoma DC is very scarce. What is the lowest price can you get the DC, 2WD, V6, LX package, a/c, powers, etc? Anybody out there?

Actually, I have no idea where they got the idea that Taco (or even Ranger) are rollover-able.
Sure, the 4x4s sit up high, but it takes a LOT of angle to roll them over, the suspension is just not that soft like on an SUV. (If you want to know what soft suspension is like, go to Isuzu and testdrive a Rodeo. That SUV requires incredible self-control because of super-soft suspension....)
I was just out 4-wheeling in San Antonio yesterday, and we came up to this little pass where left side would drop about a foot, so the truck was actually at a 30 deg angle sideways. Didnt roll over (actually there was no place to rollover, the wall would have caught me, but I didnt lay on the side).
And the way I drive I know for a fact that Tacoma is not going to rollover while doing that Mitsubishi Montero trick (that was in the news...Consumer Reports gave the LX model a worst rating because it rolled during the emergency lane change).

i live in SD as well, check with KBB to get the invoice price and get the Costco price quote, Costco will direct you to the dealers (1500 over invoice, this was 7 mo ago). the best i got from the dealers was 500 over invoice, but it was a truck i do not want, but the market is slow right now, bet you can get it for less.

it's good to get the price ref from costco and KBB, because you have a invoice price, then you just have to figure out how much money you want the dealer to have.

If you want to get the best possible price you have to visit this site.

There is a lot of information but it WILL save you money. you will be an informed buyer and once the dealer realizes it, they will stop playing games. I bought 2002 Doublecab for $48.00 over invoice. the MSRP was $26,605, Dealer invoice was $24,252. I ended up getting a price of $24,300.

It was by far the best car buying experience that I have ever had. I was in control of the negotiations the entire time. The dealer tried to say that my Internet figures were wrong but when I compared them to the invoice, they were exact to the penny. Once they realized they had an informed buyer the negotiations went smoothly.

I went through the same experience when a couple of years ago, lots of people were looking for the Honda Odyssey. They don't stay more than 24 hours in the dealer lot. I have to put $500 each at 2 dealerships to reserve it. Almost the same thing is happening with the Tacoma. They can't seem to manufacture as fast as they can sell. Also, they're enjoying selling it at MSRP while other vehicles are selling at invoice.

Looking at the Tacoma Dbl Cab Prerunner and price is really close to the Tundra's. Anyone faced the buying choice between the two units? What made you opt for the Tacoma? Any thing you missed from selecting the Tacoma?

Confused and its' a long term purchase as plan to keep quite a long time. Driving mainly for commuting in Houston, TX area and then for weekend chores and play. Not anticipating pulling anything at this time.

    Curious

I purchased a Tacoma Doublecab 4X4 instead of a Tundra 4X4 based on the following reasons:

-4 doors (even though the rear doors are smaller for getting in and out)
-more leg room (I'm 6' tall and I fit comfortably in the back of the DC)
    -better gas mileage

The Tundra is a little wider so there is more room for hips and shoulders but it wasn't enough to swing me away from the Tacoma. I have fit 3 adults in the back of my Tacoma for short trips (ie. lunch breaks, etc...) although it is much more comfortable only putting two in the back seat. Hope this information helps.

I purchased my Tacoma a week ago from Mike Calvert
Toyota in Houston. The reason I chose Tacoma over
Tundra is that there is more rear leg room despite
    being the smaller truck.

I got mine with exact options I want for $200 over
invoice from Mike Calvert's fleet dept. The deal
was over the phone, no haggling. Ask for Kerry
    Marsh.

Thanks for the replies. Surprised that the rear room was equal or better since it is smaller than the Tundra. Fuel economy is a major factor as still shocked with the larger pickups only getting 14+ MPG. Like the ride of the larger trucks but not sure it's worth the penalty of the fuel economy offset.

Is the TRD option worth the cost or best to just upgrade shocks to have a better street ride? Seems some on the board have wished they had not had the TRD option.

    Thanks!

if you go offroading OR the streets you drive on are VERY smooth. Broken pavement will jar your teeth loose with the TRD. Test drive both and find some rough pavement, then draw your own conclusion.

Yes, they are unconfortable, with very little padding. So I bought some 7/8" sheepskin seatcovers, and it totally changed my intention of swapping the seats.
Economical? no they are not. I am getting 17+ miles per gallon, same as my F150 with a V8.
I only have 3,000 miles on mine, and I think that the TRD shocks (Tokico) are getting a little softer.
