Thanks to all of you who took the time to answer/give feedback on my steering issue. I think I understand what torque steer is now. I also think that I have enough information to perhaps have an intelligent discussion with the service department and I'm going to have it looked at further and go ahead and let them align it if they want to.

This is the big President's Day Weekend Sale on just about anything you can think of, right? In our local paper (San Franciso Chronicle), not one ad for a Freestyle, not one picture of one. There is a place in San Francisco that has a bunch of Escape Hybrids in stock--I thought those were pretty much gone by now. I read an article that said that while you save gas in the short run, replacing components eats up any savings in the long run (what has to be replaced, I wonder?)Their contention was that drive it so you don't feel guilty, but bottom line is that there is no real dollar savings. Hmmmmm. I'm so skeptical about articles these days, especially after seeing all the erroneous information printed about the Freestyle.

Anyone who bought the SEL AWD with optional leather seats, are the two front seats heated like those on the LTD ? Our Canadian brochure does not indicate it being heated seats.Maybe not?
  • oldgwtholdgwth Member Posts: 25
I bought a SEL AWD with leather and most of the options but no the seats are not heated. I believe that option is only available on the Limited.

"...if we can get another Freestyle!"
That would be so cool, K's Daddy--tell your wife I totally support her. But try not to get the same color--that would just confuse the neighbors too much!

    FS Gal,

I'm not telling the wife nothing, she will have me trying to sell my old Mustang GT again, it almost cost me a marriage but I won hehehe. Can't part with my Pony :O)

Praying for warm weather so I could wash the Freebie :O(

"I bought a SEL AWD with leather and most of the options but no the seats are not heated. I believe that option is only available on the Limited"

That's what I thought and thanks for the confirmation. I was very skeptical about this when I got a quotation sheet from one dealer which stated under order code "D" Perforated Leather-Trimmed Bucket Seats....includes heated driver and passenger seat.
    That's a real bummer!

Willie ask the dealer if they can be installed aftermarket I had this done to my wifes taurus and it was only $300.00. Worth the money to not listen to her b#*%h about a cold butt.

Hey cep! Any info on the who the Regional Ford rep is for North NJ?

I also live in a climate that does not require awd. I have driven three fwd and three awd Freestyles. Aside from the price advantage of the fwd, there is the question of the better mileage of the fwd. It weighs less and does not have the power consuming friction of the awd parts. Also, it was my definite impression that the fwd was a little peppier and roared a little less when accelerating hard. I have ordered a fwd Limited, but I will have to wait.
  • bowcasterbowcaster Member Posts: 4
I have ordered an SE AWD, and was wondering how long the order process took? Also, is there any easy way (website) to see how far along your car is - ordered, built, shipped etc.

    Thanks

This was very helpful. I too plan on ordering a FWD Limited. I wonder when they will be available?

I am thinking of buying a freestyle (FWD). The question is... Will it realistically fit in a garage that has a 7'9" opening (93"). The door is 8', but the opening is 7'9".

I plan on backing it in.

As far as I can figure out, mirror to mirror (not folded in) I have 7' 4.5"

I placed my order on Jan. 26 and it's finally being built this week. I followed up on it today as a matter of fact with the dealer whom I ordered it from. He told me it is schedule to arrive the week of Mar. 7. So we are looking at 6 weeks for me. The normal waiting time is 6-8 weeks. (But then again, they will never commit to any particular date depending how many orders they get in at a given time. Roughly you are looking at the average time of 6-8 weeks) You can always contact your dealer and they should have a
faxed/ emailed confirmation of the status of your order. It only takes them a few days (less than a week to put the car all together.) So I hope this helps you determine the time frame. The hardest part is waiting for it. (It will be a LOOOOONNNNNGGG 6-8 weeks...lol)
  • bruneau1bruneau1 Member Posts: 468
It could happen at any time. The hold has been lifted on the fwd Limited, but mine is still in line to be built. If this is what you want, get your order in. If you don't want a sun roof, don't get it. We restricted our options and came out with a very nice vehicle for 27,750. Bonne chance, good luck.
  • freerideinpafreerideinpa Member Posts: 18
I guess we got lucky, our dealer had 19, Yes 19 Freestyles in stock.
If anyone is in the Northeast Pa. area and doesn't want to wait to order one they should take a road trip.

Viscan: I have xc70 and drive a v70 thats up to be replaced. the W is merely a winter mode that starts the car in third gear. IF thats been enough for you, then FWD is fine.
I am a 100% convert to awd in dry, rain or snow. The car drives as one unit rather than from the front with the rear trailing behind.
Holding off the order so I can decide between Pilot (which has colors and options I want) or Freestyle (which doesn't). Silver frost heated seats are musts for starters.
Ford been silly with not lengthening the stalk for the rear view mirror on the inside when optioning the moonroof - all I see are switches. 6ft 3 ins if you're wondering

    Jason...count yourself lucky...
I really like this vehicle but the lack of decent colors in LTDs, and lack of heated seats on SELs has me leaning elsewhere. Wont wait for them to fix these problems in 06s.

Hi all, its been a while since I've posted. I was taking my son out of the rear of my Freestyle the other day an I noticed what seems to be 3 stress marks around the second row seat belt area where the seat belt comes out of the side of the car around shoulder height. Looks like screws behind the plastic are pushing through or something. I noticed it on both sides. Anyone else have this problem ?
    Thanks

    Thanks Lumber2....
I'm still working on it.. I already decided to go with FWD now I am negotiating with the local Ford dealers about the PRICE... so far I have two dealers that are willing to sell me the car to 150-250 dollars over Invoice Price which is an approx savings of 20% of MSRP... but I just want to pay INVOICE price - I know that close to the end of the month if the dealers didn't meet the quota they will be selling me the car at INVOICE - thanks for you advise

    Hey Viscan,

How did you get them down so low? What plan did you get? The A plan? D plan? I got them lower than the X-plan about $300-$500 (that's with every option on the Limited AWD.) I still want the customer rebate as well on top of it. I normally do not buy a car brand spanking new like this, but felt this one was worth it because it just fits my lifestyle perfect being so versatile and practical. Any other savings would help. Any advise you can give me????

I have the same stress marks in the plastic that you are referring to.

I also have a problem with the front passenger seat not folding forward. I assume that there is something wrong with the seat be I guess I could be doing something wrong. I pull on the strap and nothing happens. Can anyone tell me if you are supposed to pull the strap down towards the floor or back towards the rear of the vehicle or up or sideways or anything strange? I have and SEL with leather seats and the comfort package so the seat has the power recline. Do I have to use the power recline lever and recline the seat back all of the way or forward all of the way? Maybe the seat has to be slid all of the way forward or backwards first. I haven't taken the time to look into it much yet but I assume that the seat is just broken.

I'm no expert, but the freestyle comes with traction control & can be turned on or off. This may be a temporary free option. I own the AWD SE and am quite impressed with all the standard features.
  • barnstormer64barnstormer64 Member Posts: 1,106
Just pull back on the strap, perpendicular to the seat back.

    Mine works just fine.

Been following this board for quite a while and have convinced myself that we have decided on the Freestyle as the wife's future vehicle.Got a great price at Invoice which was even lower than X-Plan (without rebate). We then selected a SEL AWD and some other options + the perf.leather bucket seats from an option sheet obtained from another dealer which stated front seats are heated (identical to what was stated in item#2585). However, my dealer said seats are NOT heated.
So after more consideration we decided to go for the Limited FWD to get all the bells and whistles and forego on the AWD. Now my dealer tells us that Ford's order banks Not accepting orders for LTD FWD. This is really frustrating and a real disappointment as we didn't mind waiting the usual 6-8 weeks on a factory order. We get Yes and No answers from different sources. What is really going on ? Anyone with a definite answer ? ANT14 where are you when we need you. You have always been the most informed. The irony is I read somewhere that the Haldex system mfr. is having a hard time keeping up with demand so when is Ford going to lift the embargo on their topline FWD???
We are just about on the verge of going back to Toyota.
  • ANT14ANT14 Member Posts: 2,687
Haldex is overwhelmed with order's from Ford for it's AWD system. The lift for the LTD FWD will be up soon, the dealer will have to continue trying till it lifts or a specific date as when it'll be lifted, and NOT wait till they receive word otherwise.

Issue is, there's an overwhelming orders for LTD AWD, therefore, Ford is wanting to produce more LTD with the AWD and fill those orders, before filling the LTD FWD. But the order ban should be lifted soon.

My Wife had some problems operating the 2nd row seat to let a passenger in the 3rd row. All you need to do is pull the strap toward the back one time and push the seatback toward the front to fold it down, pull the strap again and the base of the seat tips forward. So, it takes 2 pulls to complete the task.

    Hope this helps,

FYI, the SEL AWD Freestyle I ordered on January 7th
got to the dealer on Feb 22nd. I haven't picked it up yet--next couple of days.
  • willie19willie19 Member Posts: 139
Thanks for the encouragement, ANT14. It still doesn't make sense to me when I see three local dealer lots stuck with a bunch of SE FWD and are not selling and some are used for customer test drives.Looking at the big picture Ford to date in my estimation is about 50% below market projections for the D3 models.Assuming ZF Batavia, from what I hear can only punch out those CVTs say 300-350/day,that's only 10,000/month, so how could Ford be going to up sales to about 17,000 monthly to meet the 200,000+ for the target year.
For this reason it appears illogical to me why Ford would shun the Limited FWD demand which also produces higher profit per unit than all those unsold lower trims and putting all the financial pressure on the unhappy dealers. Just my $0.02 .
Also my dealer tells me the LTD FWD will likely be available by around Sept. or possibly an '06 model. That's the state of confusion Ford's Marketing is creating. Some of those people need to have a job re-appraisal.
  • ANT14ANT14 Member Posts: 2,687
The current SE FWD you are seeing, stems from decisions made from the start. It wasn't till actual delivery, and customer orders shows increase demand for LTD AWD. Although seeing your in Canada, how come you didn't opt for the AWD version ?

"The Freestyle is based on a modified Volvo S80 platform and it shows. The ride is very compliant and smooth. It soaks up road dimples with ease and can take hard corners without too much fuss. Driving this vehicle is actually a pleasant experience and may make some people turn their attention away from the SUV when shopping for the family vehicle."

Concerning the fwd Limited, it is hard to know what to believe. I have an order number and Ford has it in line, but I am told by Ford and my dealer that there is a "hold" because of materials. This is different from a "ban" on the order. Ford has my order. Patience is a virtue, I guess. The longer you wait to get in line, the longer it will take. Wish us luck and you, too.

In November I "ordered" a LTD FWD and was told I would have it in the first quarter of 05. We agreed on a price and a deposit was made. As of last week the dealer was unable to get a build date and offered no hope that would keep delivery within the agreed upon time frame.

Sunday another dealer in the paper was offering an LTD AWD loaded for the same price. I went to the first dealer's site looked over the inventory found nothing to match.

Closed with the second dealer Sunday afternoon and Tuesday night drove home. I have commuted to work thrice for a total of over 400 miles in snow, rain, sun, day, and night. This is a solid handling vehicle.

Now all I have to do is get my deposit back from the first dealer. I found this forum most helpful. Thank you.

We are both retired and the LTD FWD is meant for the wife. No need to drive to work nor into skiing. Hopefully that will be our "fair weather" vehicle. When it snows we can still go somewhere in my Ford Explorer Sport Trac.

I just got my ltd awd two days ago. The owners wife had taken it last mon., as a demo. So it had 410 miles on it the night I picked it up. The family loves it so far.My thing is I am getting 13.4 mpg, when the rating is for more. I am not new to the car dept., but isn't this a bit off compared to the sticker. How is everybody else doing w/ milage
  • freestyle galfreestyle gal Member Posts: 79
RE: low mileage--you will hear from lots of us, I'm sure, but your mileage will come up. I have an SEL FWD and I get about 22-23 mpg. and I have 5k miles on the car. The MPG readout in the message center can be misleading. I would bet you're probably getting better mileage than that.

I've had my Freestyle since Jan 3 and I finally saw another one! I live in San Francisco Bay Area and while I know there are a few on the road (because you're on this forum), I haven't seen you. I'm in LA awaiting the birth of my first grandchild (due date was today, but nothing yet) and while we were at the doctor's office, I saw another silver SEL in the parking lot--hooray!!! I went up to it and looked inside to see what they had and I was really hoping the security guy wouldn't catch me. I could explain myself to the owner, but I had a feeling the security guy might not buy my story. I mean, I'm such a threatening looking character walking around with an extremely pregnant young woman...She's been driving the Freestyle around (I know--but isn't a testament the fun-factor and the adjustability of the seats??). They have a RAV 4 and they liking the Freestyle as a possible replacement vehicle. They said it feels like driving a Volvo to them.

Safety question: the headrests in the front seats are bothering my daughters, who both have ponytails and the headrests were bothering them because they are angled forward. I popped them out and turned them around--did I do a terrible thing? I find it more comfortable too, but I really don't want a whiplash...

It's kind of disheartening to read of so many of you having problems getting your Freestyles--I don't know how you are being so patient! I think it's worth the wait, though.
  • ANT14ANT14 Member Posts: 2,687
The fuel milage readout will adjust (improve) after a few fill up. The system is taking pre-delivery figures, to come up with it's calculations. After a few fill ups, and a month later, the real MPG will show.

I wouldn't recommend flipping over the headrests. You are cutting it's maximum efficiency incase of an accident. The way the headrest mechanism works, is upon rear impact, pressure from your upper body submarining into the upper backrest, will activate the structure of the headrests, to protrude forward and catch the skull with minimal travel.... (More travel, higher chance of whiplash injury).

I'm not sure how to bypass the ponytail issue. I do have a friend which she reclines the seat back a bit, and uses this half-donut headrest placed upon her shoulders, and it allows her to have her extravagant hairdo's.
  • northlakesnorthlakes Member Posts: 368
Some of us find that resetting the mpg display and gallons used display after filling up helps give a more normal mileage reading. It appears that the electronics want to average mileage over ~the last 500 miles. It does take a little while for the calculated mileage to come up.

Now about those 410 miles on your "new" Freebie. I hope you got a discount or something for the usage. Enjoy it!
  • barnstormer64barnstormer64 Member Posts: 1,106
Just rest the MPG . . you may have to hit the RESET button a few times in the MPG mode to do it . . but you'll know when you've reset it.

    Hi sassyfreestyle..
I didn't do anything unusual.. What I did first is to built the Freestyle I'm looking for on Autos MSN.com, and also on Kelly Blue Book (kbb.com)... both websites gave both prices the MSRP and the Invoice Price. Based on those figures I submitted for quote prices and started negotiating with the 10 closest Ford dealers from my area and this is who I was able to get the lowest price. Based on my previous reply, I mentioned that I found two dealers that were willing to sell me the Freestyle at 150-250 over invoice.
Well yesterday I got the response from another dealer that the were willing to sell me car for 100 over the invoice, and another dealer that is selling me the car just at the invoice price...
So now I found the dealer that is willing to sell me the Freestyle at invoice but now my other concern is based on the previous messages posted it seems like that Ford put a hold or ban on the Limited FWD... So I will appreciate if any one knows or has an idea when they will be available...
Also can someone explain to me what the "A" Plan, "D" Plan or "X"-Plan means?
    Thanks!!!
  • freestyle galfreestyle gal Member Posts: 79
Thanks for the explanation re: the headrests. Makes perfect sense. I went out and washed the car (took a road trip and I couldn't stand the bug corpses another minute!) and turned thosed headrests back around. The ponytails will have to be dealt with another way :-)
  • gnuenglandergnuenglander Member Posts: 3
I reviewed all the snow responses on the entire board and am wondering if anyone else out there has a FWD Freestyle that they drive through the snow and what their impressions on FWD traction are under wintry road conditions. The higher gas mileage on the FWD is attractive to me.

I was wondering if anyone has any good ideas for storage of bags after grocery shopping? If the rear seats are up, I find bags/articles tend to slide under the seats. Thoughts?
  • figueroafamilyfigueroafamily Member Posts: 223
My experience on Dealer rear sensors is horrible. Mine only worked a week. Still waiting for my wife to get it over there!

    Also:
    * Dealers don't order them as they can charge more for the installation. Ours was supposedly $400 (got it for $300). Compare that to the $250 MSRP factory installed version.
    * The warranty on the dealer sensor may not likely match the one in your vehicle.
    * If you get extended warranties, you may not get coverage either. (I'm not sure, but I bet Ford ESP won't cover ours.)

Sorry I've been away for a while. Doing a Master's is tough on chat time.

    Options:
    * If you put the soda case under the seats, the bags won't slide in.
    * Consider buying collapsible (or folding) crates. A quick search on e-bay or google can get you several sellers. Here's one:

PS - The prospective user of Freebie's second row (baby) has only 4 more months before popping out. The stork should arrive in July 11 +/-. I was amazed when I saw his face (fully detailed) on the ultrasound screen.
