I'm a happy Ford Escape owner, but unfortunately our family has outgrown it.

I notice that the Freestyle packs four cruise control buttons together in the space where my Escape has two. Any owner care to comment regarding how easy (or not so easy) it is to navigate these buttons, say in the dark with gloves on?

I'm also interested in the preciseness of the cruise control. Press the accelerate button four times on my Escape and you accelerate 4mph. Not so with many of the competitors. How about the Freestyle?

got the mats at the accessory desk at the Ford dealership.
about 65$, and they come in a pack of 4 so nothing for the last row.

I now have 700 miles on my Freestyle. I like it more every mile.

I've solved one problem - the hitch. Now, I need Splash Guards. Searched the forum, only one request for info in Dec.

Anyone able to find molded splash guards?

    Test drove the SEL Freestyle.
Did not like the excessive engine noise. It was definitely too loud for my taste.

    1) When will this car's engine noise problem get fixed? 2006? 2007 2008?

Otherwise it was a nice vehicle but I would never buy it because I found the engine noise annoying and worse than any car I have recently driven (Camry, Mazda6, Sable, Focus, Odyssey, Acccord/Acura).

2)My 2nd gripe is no ESC. It's static rollover ranking is similar to Pilot and XC90, but each of these offers ESC for extra control. Toyota offers ESC on many different velicles, while Honda equips all taller vehicles. How long will I have to wait for ESC? 2006? 2007? 2008?

    3) That said the Freestyle is nice and I would buy it but for those 2 issues as I like the medium ride height; it is really unique in this regard - not too tall and not too small.

    4) I heard something about a Mercury Freestyle:
Which comes first a 3.5L (hopefully quieter) Freestyle with ESC, or a Mercury Freestyle with 3.5L and ESC? When is either likely to happen?

5)I personally do no care about the extra horsepower a 3.5 would bring, but anything that would improve the sound of the 3.0 L would be welcome.

The Mercury version won't appear until the 2007 model year. What it will have is pure speculation at this point. The 3.0 is a little noisy under hard acceleration, but I don't think it negates the vehicles's positive points.

One of the automotive websites is claiming May 2nd is Job 1 (first build day) for the FWD LTD.
Supposedly, it will not come with the 18" wheels, only 17".
Interestingly, final order day for the 2005 FS is May 20th. Job 1 for the 2006 FS is scheduled
    for July 18.
Why bother at this late stage for the FWD LTD?
It will be a model year old in three months!

    Jaki:

You know you're right about losing value thru depreciation, so if that's the case might as well shoot for the '06 ASAP.Hopefully the price won't go up much and possibly include Stability Control.
Also wonder if they will give you a decent credit should you still decide to take a late '05 LTD/FWD with 17" wheels as an incentive.

"Did not like the excessive engine noise."

Amazing how the lack of wind-noise makes you notice other noises more easily.

"It's static rollover ranking is similar to Pilot and XC90, but each of these offers ESC for extra control."

When's the last time you drove your car in a "static condition"? ;)

I seem to recall reading a web page about the "rollover tests", and the conclusion was that the'r laughable. In fact, I believe it was pointed out that a car like the Corvette didn't do so hot on the static test. LOL.

Well, I drove the AWD Freestyle, and here are my overall impressions. Simply a wonderful ride, great seats, and good ergonomics. I especially like the relationship of the steering wheel and pedals to my frame (5ft. 8, 154 lbs.), as I am not a big guy. My two complaints: one minor, one major>>
    1) Where is Ford getting this hideous paint scheme ? I don't want that tacky 2 tone GM theme of contrasting plastic stuck on as an afterthought. I drove a model that was silver with a darker contrasting theme around the wheelwells. It ruined what would have otherwise been a beautiful paint job. That is my nit-pick gripe.
    2) MAJOR: GET ANOTHER ENGINE. This 3 liter engine does not have NEAR enough torque to handle this weight of vehicle. I shudder to think how it would behave with several people and a load aboard. This engine is also NOISY and drones under acceleration. IF Ford can ditch this engine and come up with the rumored 3.5 liter, with that sweet 6 speed auto ASAP, I would buy one of these in a heartbeat. As it looks now, I will probably buy a Honda Pilot.

We purchased a SEL AWD on 02/14. It has been very good so far. Power.....it could use a little more but this is a family car....not a sports car. CVT transmission works well but may car the noisy engine since it does let it rev past it noise sweet spot.

They are not easy to find in our configuration, so we had to settle on a color that would normally be our first choise.

Still....highly recommended in this price range and segment.....we will not drive a mini van!!

I can't overcome Fords annoying color choice/equipment restrictions on SEL/LTds, and a few features that simply seem cheap, like the cover over the third row when laid down. And its also looking a little expensive v Pilot EXL.
Perceived lower Ford reliability doesn't help. True cost to own numbers for the Freestyle much higher than Pilot as well.

    Hey FSG,

"A real purty Norsea Blue SEL with paper plates and a Watsonville dealership license plate holder."

Internet has been down all week because we just got a new roof on the house and my two way internet antenna was in the garage. That wasn't us you were parked next to in Cupertino. We still haven't seen another one, much less a Norsea Blue one. It is a nice color...we really like it. I'll have to see if we can make a trip over to HMB sometime soon to compare rides. We had friends over there (Ken, retired from UA, and Marcy). Ever hear of them?

Most manufactures stability control don't currently protect against rollover. I believe that the Volvo/Ford RSC (roll stabilty control is the only current system that does. I believe that RSC was first on the XC90 then the Lincolns followed by the Mercury and taller truck based Ford SUV's. Normal ESC from everyone else simply looks at the ABS wheel sensors to determine what it needs to do. Fords RSC does the same as the ESC but it also incorporates a pitch and yaw sensor to see what the \vehicle is actually doing and not just the wheels. So I don't know how well other manufactures ESC would actually keep you from rolling. Although in the next year or so you will start seeing RSC from other manufactures because Ford decided to start licensing the technology to them this fall.

Barnstormer, I can appreciate the guest's comment, but the data so far, does not support all statements made. The NHTSA Safercar.gov has no rollover rating for the Freebie posted yet. Further, the Freebie body is lower to the ground than Pilot or the XC-90. With its wide track, geometry and physics tells me which one I want to be in. The side curtain air bags activate upon rollover - if that should occur.

Secondly, the space between the third row seat and the rear bumper in the Freestyle is greater than in the Pilot. Rear collisions are very common. I would feel safer in the rear of the Freebie.

Finally, this is just an observation, but on the safercar.gov site, the photo of the Freebie in a front end collision collapses with no histrionics at the rear of the car. The photo of the Pilot shows its rear wheels off the ground for the same collision, indicating it did not do as good a job of absorbing the force of a front end collision.

I can appreciate that the Freebie is not everyone's cup of tea, but it is easy to take a narrow view and not see the forest for the trees. Having had my Freestyle since December, there have been no surprises, nothing that my research did not bring out.

For all the SUVs that go flying by, weaving in and out of traffic and wondering why something a foot taller than a car rolls over, no warning sticker or ESC will save them - just make them feel more confident. The driver has the greatest effect on traffic safety...

Amen to that. I certainly don't drive the Freestyle like I drive my Taurus.

I bought Powerflow Pro-fit Splash Guards from Auto Zone. The numbers are 6401 and 6402. The are molded and fit rather well; however, the back set is a little difficult. I believe Ford will make some molded ones in the future, but you better get them fast when they do or you will be out of luck. Ford tends to make only a few and then they stop.

Static test rating for a land rover has always been 45%.

This is a good point, in all testing you will see how the car undramatically crunches into the wall/obstacle, without affecting other parts of the vehicle. NO front end dive, no rear-end lifting, etc. All the crash forces are absorbed and transfered around the vehicle which was the main goal of the platform engineering team.

The Freestyle is called the Territory in Australia. I have ordered both front and rear splash guards from a dealership in Sydney. I'll make a further posting when they arrive.
  • ANT14ANT14 Member Posts: 2,687
The Freestyle and Territory are NOT the same vehicle.

The Territory is derived from the Falcon (yes, SAME Falcon we had in the U.S. decades ago). It's a RWD/AWD platformed vehicle.

The Freestyle is a N.A. only vehicle. It's a FWD/AWD Volvo derived platform.

Either way, verify that it somewhat fits onto the Freestyle.

Whew! We did our roof a few years ago--first and last one we ever do (I say "we:" I made the sandwiches, helped bandaid the blisters, etc.). Yuck.
Asked my hubbie about your friends--may know them on sight. At one point, there were thousands of people working on just the maintenance base alone--alas no longer but after 35 years, it's amazing how many we do know. Feel free to email me.
The Norsea Blue FS belongs to a staff member, so I'll find out who it is and tell them about our little online community.
Reverse sensor just totally became a must-have on all future vehicles for me (sort of like the keypad entry). I got in my car and fired it up and the reverse sensor was beeping. It beeps when I back out of the driveway, when I back up past my husband's truck, etc. So the beeping was going, I look around and didn't see anything. So I decided to get out and check and there was my young neighbor, 3 years old, crouched down behind the car hiding from her brother. We had a little chat about doing that. I hate to think what might have happened if I didn't have the reverse sensor. She didn't move when I fired up the car because I guess she was so focused on hiding--I mean--what the???? For all the people complaining about engine noise, it really isn't that noisy on the outside when you start it up (or anytime, for that matter, in my opinion). Scary, scary, scary.

I'm trying to make my emai public by going into preferences and/or update forum profile (I've tried both) but keep getting this message:

"You must correct the following error(s) before proceeding:
Screen Name must be letters or numbers."

The screen doesn't really give me a place to correct it, and I think it's correct anyway. Help?

blitzing, I had an Escape before purchasing a Freestyle. To answer your questions, the layout of the cruise control in the Freestyle is efficient, but does take some getting used if you are accustomed to the Escape's. I'd say it's a bit more complex, but that's expected going from 2 to 4 buttons. However, I find there are less failed attempts to set the cruise on the Freestyle. It seems to react to finger presses more easily than the Escape.
And, yes, like the Escape, you can accelerate a mph at a time, so 4 taps on the accelerate button results in a 4-mph acceleration. Hope this helps.

Since I have encouraged some of you to order fwd Limited Freestyles, I will tell you what I know. All fwd Limited will be delivered with 17" wheel/tire combos. I assume this will be the same combo as on the SEL, but I don't know that for sure. The 215 tire rides a bit softer than the 225 which handles a bit better. I feel a bit betrayed by this change and suspect Ford is doing it because they can't get enough Pirelli tires. In any case, there will have to be a price reduction to compensate for the difference. If anyone can find out about the "new" tire, please let us know. I will decide this week if I am going forward with my order. By the way, the Thunderbird is canceled.

Found this on a Michigan-related web site. Don't know what "driveability" means here, but I vaguely remember some posts from a long time ago.

    *************************************
    March 7, 2005
Dearborn, Michigan. Ford Motor Company told dealers that 2005 Ford Freestyle vehicles with the 3.0L 4-valve engine and the continuously variable transmission (CVT) may exhibit intermittent drivability concerns on deceleration and/or during turning maneuvers.

To solve this drivability concern, Ford will reprogram the powertrain control module (PCM).

Owners who experience intermittent drivability concerns with their Freestyle should consult their Ford or Lincoln-Mercury to have the above mentioned service performed.
  • willie19willie19 Member Posts: 139
I am in the same boat as you and I agree that a price reduction should be expected for the downgraded wheels/tires.Strange that there is no mention of orders for LTD AWD (K06) also getting the substituted 17" wheels. Ford needs to make an announcement either thru their website &/or their dealers as how they are going to treat this situation, otherwise they could be sued for misrepresentation by customers not being informed.
At this stage I'll wait to see what happens next and the worst case scenario is that the build date won't start before May 2nd... So if things don't look any rosier I'll place the earliest order for '06 and maybe get some small improvements at nominal increase in cost (I hope).

I got an invite in the mail to go to a website for marketing purposes to complete an online survey and three lucky people win $500--yeah, whatever but I'll fill out the survey. And I got a free canister of touch up paint--not sure why--tied in with the MyFord magazine and website, I think. Kinda cool. It's odd for me to be driving something that so few people own--at least around here. I'm used to driving cars that lots of people have: Taurus, Escort, Explorer, Expedition, etc. Anyone else getting all this marketing stuff? I'm still so happy with the car and if I ever want to buy another one, I want them to know where I want those itty bitty convenience lights, be able to lock the car from the back like the Explorers and Expeditions, etc.
  • northlakesnorthlakes Member Posts: 368
No, no special marketing attention, but I did get a letter good for 10% off any Freestyle accessories until March 31st. I think it is a dealer-sponsored thing. I got 10% + an additional discount off of the shop manuals (two for the Freebie). I also ordered a cargo net, hopefully arriving in time for the discount as well.

and found this forum today! Norsea Blue/Gunmetal FWD SEL with leather interior, seating for 6 with 2nd row center console and 50/50 3rd row, dual climate control, 6cd changer, 8-way power driver seat, 4 way power passenger seat,

talked the dealer into throwing in the DVD player for free and they put in an aftermarket one instead of the oem one, but its an 8" screen instead of the 7" ford screen. Only drawback is it doesn't use the ford radio AUX in, it uses a powered FM Modulator that still sounds pretty decent.

Just had The front and second row windows tinted to 35% today

Oh since the DVD player isn't using my AUX button, has anyone figured out how to hook up an MP3 player to that yet?

Oh yeah... I LOVE the car...quite a step up from my Focus.

I noticed that some are paying more on their insurance. I am paying $163 less than I did for my explorer. And as fo rthe milage. Someone had said wait till 1000 miles then reset on a fill up and I did. Well I am getting 15-16 stop and go. But, taking into consideration that their are a lot of lights and stop signs. Plus my foot gets heavy at times I feel the car is doing great. On the turnpike I get 22-23 once again deepending on speed.

Took a trip with my 3 week old SEL FWD Freebie this past weekend from Upstate NY to Durham NC. 10+ hrs. Here are some of my observations with some questions mixed in. Gas mileage was pretty steady all the way down. The best I got was 25.2 and the worse was 23.5 highway. The 25.2 was from Northern Va to NC with pretty much flat terrain. The 23.5 was from Rochester through Maryland with lots of hills especially in PA. Driving around Durham on half a tank ran about 22 mpg. These numbers where calculated the old fashion way - pad & pen. I had wifey, son from college who we picked up on the way, dog and dog crate in the back half and three weeks of dirty clothes(from son) in the other half. Pretty much drove 70 all the way but it was very easy to get into 75-80 without any problem. Don't understand the needs more power statements. Had no problem on i-95 or working around Raleigh or Durham on the expressways. I was surprised to find the display numbers a lot closer than expected. The gallons used number always seemed to be within .2 gallons of the fill up number. The MPG number was real close to the calculated number. The number didn't seem to vary by more than .3 mpg. Still haven't figured out the reset for mpg. No one really responded to my earlier question but if you keep the reset button depressed the number eventually counts down to 1.0 or somewhere close to 1.0 but never really goes back to 0 and 2 seconds after you let go the mpg randomly goes to 9-12. Is anyone else seeing this? The prior car was a windstar and if you tapped the button twice it would reset to 0. You would think there should be a way to reset to zero. Coming home pretty much duplicated the numbers in reverse. Better mileage in the south with a little less in the hills of PA. Some annoyances; no place to hang clothes in the back area and the hanger clip on the second row is a joke. The size of the clip would let you hang maybe 3 wire hangers and with plastic you might be lucky if one would fit. I used the pull down handle but realize that is not designed for that function. Would be nice to have a ceiling clip in the back. My second row is configured with leather buckets. My wife commented that she misses the arm chair rests. It made me think if the center console would alleviate this but said console up front gave some support but is just a tad to far back to be comfortable for this type of trip. I like to steer with hands at 4 & 7 and found that the door rest is too low and the window sill is too high. Center console is just far enough back if I put the car seat up as close as I can get without eating the steering wheel it will support my arm but still not as comfortable as the van with arm rests. Don't know if this will be the same for the second row of seats. I found the steering control buttons easy to use. In response to the person who asked about the cruise buttons. It appears that each tap will increase speed by one mile. My biggest positive surprise is the fog lights. Really lights things up even at dim. Radio reception was fantastic. Listened to a lot of hoop action on the way down. We were able to pick up an Albany NY station even from NC. Listened to Syracuse play UConn Friday night. It was a little weak in NC but still could hear ok. Go SU. Road noise seemed ok to me. I-85 in NC was a joke. This was the worse stretch of road for car noise but it seemed ok to me. The bumps seemed to be a little more noticeable than a van but both bumps and noise seem to be minimal. Daughter thought she had trouble shutting the second row doors. She felt it wasn't shut because she didn't get the normal door bang when you close the door. For what it is worth, she's a Honda owner. So far so good. Three weeks and already 2300 miles on it. I drove a Chrysler or Ford van for the last 20 years so I knew this would be a change. I think my biggest issue has nothing to do with the vehicle but more with Ford's marketing. I too would have ordered a Limited if I could get one with FWD but we know where that conversation is. Purchased mine with X-Plan but that was not as clean as it should be and makes me wonder if not just another marketing scheme. Ten years ago when the X-Plan came out it was my understanding that all rebates were applicable. Now they say that those out there (ie, qtr horse) are private rebates and not national rebates. Good car so far.

    Northlakes,
    RE: you're dealer sponsored discounts
Well, you're doing pretty good, I would say! That's worth more than my touch up paint, for sure. The marketing survey "you could win $500" if you filled it out was a hoot. I figured since not many people drive Freestyles, my chances of winning the money was better than winning the lottery (of course, if I ever actually bought a ticket, my chances might be a little better...) I went onto the website, put in my password, etc. After about 4 questions, a screen came up and said "We have completed marketing in your area. Goodbye." Well, thanks so much, lizard breath.
A previous post complained about that useless clothes hook in the back seats--oh yeah! I feel you there. Traveling with my nice clothes that kept ending up on the floor was not so nice; a serious redo is required on that little item! I was only using two hangars and the hook couldn't handle it. Weak.

Howdy, I have considered purchasing this vehicle, but I'm very concerned about the CVT transmission. I had a little Suburu Justy (Same size as a Ford Focus) that had a CVT transmission. At 100,000 miles, the tranmission belt disintegrated. I asked Ford to comment on how reliable they think the CVT transmission is and they told me that this is the proprietary ownership of Ford and will not be released to the public. So, what does that tell you??? Saturn use to have a CVT transmission in the 4 cyl. VUE and they stopped..?? Does someone else have a comment on this new transmission?
  • preferbicyclespreferbicycles Member Posts: 33
The Freestyle CVT hasn't been around long enough to have good durability data. However, I believe the Justy CVT used a V-belt whereas the Ford CVT uses a pretty heavy-duty chain. I wouldn't assume they would have similar wear patterns.

I can say that my pretty new Freestyle CVT works very nicely. I certainly hope it continues to.

The deacceleration thing with the PCM reprogram sounds like the stalling issue with the Escape / Tribute, which by the way has the same 3.0 ltr engine.

We have put just over 2000 miles on our Limited AWD since December and have had two "events" with the CVT in the last two weeks. Neither was a mechanical breakage, but in both cases the "check transmission" message came onto the info display and the vehicle lost power (engine ran fine, but no power got through to the road). Both times the fault codes didn't yield any information and Ford engineers worked with the dealer to try and find the source. They put test equipment on the car and drove it around to see if they could find the fault and couldn't. If it happens a third time, the car is a lemon under MA law. Even if it doesn't, this has soured our love for the car as it's no fun getting stranded. Ford roadside assistance is a joke. The first time it took three hours to get a tow to the dealer. The second time they couldn't find someone to tow the car and after an hour of waiting for them to tell me they had someone lined up to tow, I called AAA who had a flatbed picking me up in less than 45 minutes. Both breakdowns occurred around 7 pm on a weeknight with clear weather - no reason to not be able to find a tow truck in the Back Bay area of Boston as AAA proved.

I thought I'd be gone from this forum, thinking that its not going to be for me but all of a sudden I keep seeing them in the road around Boston. Followed a Freestyle around Rt 128 today from Needham then down Rt9 for a bit. Daughter with her Mum in the passenger seat and I think 2-3 kids in it. Dark blue SEL AWD. Now I was driving my 180bhp 4800lb V8 truck, and she showed me quite effectively how much zip that car has. I wonder is the Freestyle the best looking 7 seat vehicle on the road today?

Had the same problem on the survey last week and I was ticked enough to send them a short Thank you so much email. Today I received the following so if you're still interested try again.
quote "The survey is now available. I apologize, as we experienced some problems with it over the past couple days. Be assured, that we are interested in what you have to share about your vehicle ownership experience".
PS I threw may card away last week so I don't know if it will work or not!
  • freestylegalfreestylegal Member Posts: 70
Oh shoot! I actually tore my card in two (or six or seven) pieces. Oh well. I wanted to share, but never mind! I'm taking my toys and going home.
And completely off topic but perhaps of interest: I discovered a couple more interesting things the car does (I'm usually the last to figure things out, so feel free to laugh at me ;-)
    1) the driver's window also goes automatically up--now that's cool! I'm sure I'm last to discover that.
    2) you can't lock your keys inside if you've left the keys in the ignition, BUT if you close the door anyway (and ignore the "Yo scatterbrain!" chime) you can hit the keypad lock function and it will lock. Not a smart idea to leave the keys hanging out of your ignition I suppose but it just seemed interesting to me that the engineers didn't plan for that eventuality. They really need to talk to me because trust me, if there is a way to lock myself out, I will surely find it. Thanks heavens for the keypad (and remembering your code!).

I got my Freestyle last week and love it so far. My husband would prefer something with more power but with the gas prices going through the roof we needed something that gets better gas mileage. We now own five fords! My husband won't own anything else. We have had a great time with them all. The FreeStyle is good for hauling the grandbabies back and forth! I think we will enjoy it for years to come. It is the SEL, wish they had had a Limited when we got ours, but they didn't.

A couple of days ago I picked up my Freestyle SEL AWD with the comfort package and the rear sensor.

We bought the president of the dealership's car. He had already driven it for 7,000 km so we figured that if he didn't have any problems by now, it's a somewhat safe bet. Not to mention, the engine must be well worked-in.

We got a decent deal because it was slightly used. So far, we are really pleased.

We're a family of four and we previously had 2 cars. We ditched our 2nd car (which sat in the garage for 60 days straight over the winter; what a waste of $) and we traded in our 2001 Focus wagon for the Freestyle. So far, we are very happy. We don't do a lot of milage (about 15000 km per year) but we do a lot of short trips.

We decided to get the SEL with all the trimmings because we felt it was time to spoil ourselves a bit. Power this, power that, leather seats, etc etc.

But, reading the boards, I'm starting to get the post-purchase jitters....1st year model, tranny problems, stuff like that. After 7200 km and no problems, should I be overly concerned.

With my 2001 focus se wagon I experienced 2 recalls, but apart from that, I had no complaints.

But, again, so far, I'm very happy. I've been getting a lot of "what the hell is that?" looks and that's cool on the ego. Apart from mine, and the two on the lot, I've only seen one other Freestyle....good or bad sign?

Came across this website to find your perfect car...

The Freestyle comes under the Compact SUV Category.
This is supposed to be a very comprehensive analysis of all vehicles in each of their respective categories by INDUSTRY PROFESSIONALS.They are ranked by Best In Class in various sub-categories.Some of the info is interesting but what blows my mind is the credibility of some of the discrete items... for example in the "cargo" section, the Freestyle is ranked 18th(???), way behind the Nissan Xterra and Hyundai Santa Fe, rated 1st and 2nd (???). Well look for yourself and be absolutely shocked.

One more item from the trip, we had both windows down in the 2nd row and was going about 45-50 and the noise created by having the windows down hurt my ears. Hard to describe but the noise was not exceedingly loud but rather a suction / whooping noise. Anyway it really bothered both people in the front seats. Anyone else experienced this?

Actually I wouldn't recommend having the windows down while driving above 30MPH. You create drag on the vehicle which can lower your MPG average.

I have now seen my second Freestyle on this side of town. Looked good passing by.
