Hi all, Has anyone else purchased these and installed them yet? I'm a bit disappointed at how big the clamps are. It kind of defeats the purpose of installing them.

I know, your probably saying why? Right? Hey, I wanted a new Hummer H 3 so this was a compromise buying the Freestyle. Don't get me wrong, I love it so far, but there's not a lot of customizing you can do with these, (nor would you want to)
I just thought it would give our new Silver Frost Metallic SEL a little extra flare.

Also I've ordered the crossbars from Ford, but I'm not crazy about how far over the rails they go. Does anyone else know where you might be able to find more options for these anywhere? Thanks, and I look forward to more of your comments. Great info so far.

Somewhere way up-thread somebody posted a photo of the chrome tips installed ... search for "chrome" and I bet you can find the photo.

The raised crossbars I got from a Ford part # were actually generic Yakima bars. I don't know of other options for these, but I will say that I think they are great -- raised round bars are much more flexible than the usual flat OEM type bars, it's a breeze to put on a bike carrier or take it off to haul plywood, etc. One note on the bars, if you have a moonroof, you'll notice the bars are MUCH quieter if installed further toward the rear of the car (4' apart is fine for almost any application, so I put the rear bar nearly all the way back).

    Greetings:

I'm the one who posted my issues with the FORD exhaust tips that I installed on my Freestyle. Please reference the attached pic. As you have discovered, those horrible clamps really detracted from the tips so I removed them, painted the hardware a flat-black using high heat engine paint. The pic on the right shows how the paint helps hide those hideous clamps. Nearly two months later and they still look the same and the paint has not flaked/chipped off. Nonetheless, FORD did a very poor job of designing the attachment clamps and I shouldn't have had to paint them to minimize their appearance. The chrome tips really do dress up the tailpipes but you have to decide if the effort and expense are worth it.

    Regards -

Wow, what a difference a little flat black paint makes....Thanks for the tip and another option.

I havn't done this but I saw some pictures of Audi TT chrome tips (purchased at Ebay for around 44 bucks, I think) and were welded in place. The installation looked very good. Factory-like, in fact.

I have tips on my Freestyle but I wouldn't recommend what I did. Oh, they look good. No ugly clamps to hide. It was just hard to install them. I bought some 5 inch tips off the internet. One fit but the left one didn't because of the muffler hanger. I had a lot of time on my hands so I carefully cut off about and inch or so with a dremel tool on both of them, redrilled and retapped the holes for the set screws (stainless bolts in this case) and mounted them. A LOT of work to save a few bucks. I think the tips were 14 bucks each. Not a lot of savings over the Audi ones and not a route I'd take again.

Now have 9000 miles on AWD SE model. NO problems at all to this point. Test drove subaru before buying. Freestyle drove better, tighter, more comfortable, etc. Mileage almost identical. price similar. Space better with that extra row of seating. Transmission smoother. Winter AWD in snow in Minnesota was outstanding. So my vote is that Freestyle outstanding competitor to subaru. I hope ford also comes out with smaller freestyle on smaller volvo platform that might compete with small SUV market.

I am thinking about buying a Freestyle, had a couple of questions and wanted to see if anyone had any thoughts. thanks in advance for any input.

    1. FWD vs. AWD. I live in MA, so can expect some snow/ice etc. does the AWD make that much more difference?

    2. pricing. I got a "Dealer quote" of 26,500 on an SEL, FWD, leather, dvd, aux climate control. Any sense if that is a good price or not?

    3. If the dealer has 15 models left on the lot this late in the year, can i expect some movement downward from the quote?
  • fsmmcsifsmmcsi Member Posts: 792
As for price, it is simple. Just tell the dealer you will not pay anything over invoice. With the "employee pricing" you could pay even less than invoice.
  • nitromaxnitromax Member Posts: 640
I live in Mass and I paid $500 below invoice for an AWD SEL w/moonroof, reverse sensing, leather, aux climate, etc.
The dealers are offering incentives up to almost $5000 depending on what you qualify for. I mentioned that other dealers in my area were doing this and my dealer matched it.

I doubt you'll see any movement much lower than what I got...invoice is a good target to go for because they still see some incentives from the factory to move these or else they wouldn't be offering the incentives.

AWD in mass is not necessarily needed. If wanted to go with the FWD and just have a second set of snow tires, you would be fine.....especially with the traction control being standard.
But if you live in an area that is rather hilly or doesn't get serviced frequently with plows, you might want to opt for the AWD.

Run your option package through the Edmunds TMV configurator to see if the offer that you received falls in the taget area.

    Good luck

"As for price, it is simple. Just tell the dealer you will not pay anything over invoice. With the "employee pricing" you could pay even less than invoice."

You'd be NUTS to pay invoice right now.

Go to FordVehicles.com . . . do a Dealer Search for your zip code. Then start checking out the inventories of the Ford dealesr near you on that site.

It will list all the vehicles that meet your specs, and you will see the current Ford Family Price, which will be WELL below invoice.
  • cmunizcmuniz Member Posts: 604
Brainstormer64 is right. Each Ford dealer website I have looked at gives you the employee price plus any additional rebates with the sales price listed at the bottom. It should be BELOW invoice. Another way to check is to have the dealer show you an invoice with Ford's "A" plan price, which is the employee price. None of these are negotiable and will not likely go down until the last few cars are left - if then. My advise is to shop now and if you find a vehicle you like and are in the market for a new car buy now!

Thanks, now you got me all depressed. :-(

If I had waited two more weeks, I could have taken advantage of these prices. ouch!

(But then again, I did get if for under invoice so I guess thats not TOO bad)

    gaarrrrr!

This is my first post here but I want to thank you for all your comments about the Freestyle. Because of your comments and my research, my wife and I purchased a pueblo gold Freestyle SEL with auxiliary air from a dealer south of Shreveport, LA yesterday (7-15-2005). :) We are really pleased with the vehicle's versitility and the dealer experience was good as well. Your comments were very helpful to me as I made a decision. I read through many of the pages from this forum and just wanted to say thank you. We are proud to be Ford Freestyle owners! :shades:

Well, you're not supposed to look if you've already BOUGHT a vehicle. LOL

I didn't get my Freestyle for that price, but I did get my Five Hundred for that price.

Hi There...could someone could take some quick measurements for me? :)

I was going to rent a U-Haul truck to pick up a few items while our 2006 is on order but then thought....wait...I bet these might just fit in a Freestyle and I'll rent one of those instead from my local Ford dealer.

Here's what I need to pick up and my question is...will they both fit at once...or do I need to make two separate trips:

A dresser that is 49" tall, 20" deep and 39" wide.

A changing table that is 32" tall, 20" deep and 50" wide.

    Many Thanks!

In a surprise move, the Ford Freestyle based on the same platform as the Five Hundred/Montego is dropped after MY 2007. The name will continue, but it will not be the Five Hundred/Montego platform. A Mercury version was always planned for 2007. It's still coming out.

Also, the FreeSTAR will also be dropped shortly thereafter..

Did I read in an earlier post from you that you had a repair/shop manual? If so, where did you get it and how much was it? I searched the web over the weekend and didn't find any available from Chiltons, Haynes or any others.
    Thanks.

I want to start by saying I am in Canada and was gonna change vehicule in Dec but I am now looking at taking adavantage of the A plan.

I am interested in the freestyle but cant decide between the the base SE, SE awd or SEL. I live near Ottawa and we dont travel that much so I wonder if the AWD is really necessary.

I was wondering if anyone had the same dilemma SE vs SEL and what made you decide? plus are there other options I really need? that I should consider?

    thank you

    hope this message is clear

will they both fit at once...or do I need to make two separate trips:

If all else fails, lay the dresser on its side and take the legs off the table.

  • jethrojacksonjethrojackson Member Posts: 33
Tidester...no legs to take off...it's a solid piece changing table with drawers...measurements in previous post are of the entire piece. :) Are you saying they'll fit as is....I was a little concerned about the width of the Freestyle opening in the back. Do you know how wide the opening is? I'm guessing depth won't be a problem. Thanks!
  • northlakesnorthlakes Member Posts: 368
Tim, I ordered mine direct from my Ford dealer in the Parts department. It is a two volume set and was either $100, or $130 (I think I had a discount coupon that I used). The set also covers the 500 and Montego. If you need the part number, let me know. I hope that helps. :shades:
  • tidestertidester Member Posts: 10,059
Do you know how wide the opening is?

No, I don't know but both the second- and third-row seats fold flat into the floor providing a deep cargo well.

I just purchased an SE FWD about an hour ago. The "A" plan got me in the door too - 36 month 0% finance didn't hurt either.

I think the AWD/FWD decision is the easier one - especially for you. Mind you, I'm not one of these Americans that think it's frigid in Canada even in August, but I would have to think an AWD would be worth the money for your Ottawa winters.

I went with the SE since I didn't think the difference in price for the SEL was worth it. It's a personal preference. I don't need a 6 cd changer, and I can live without a leather steering wheel and fog lights. My SE did come with dual zone climate option and dimming mirror. So maybe think about what features are in the SEL that you like that maybe are offered as options on the SE.

I knew some while back that story would get posted. This is a story Autoweek has been trying to piece together for awhile already. Although they are getting a bit closer. Freestyle will continue, it'll just be different. Unfortunately for the spin of the story, they are trying to draw some doomsdays senario of "Oh because sales are so low, this is what will happen"...

Realistically, sales aren't slow. The vehicle was never ment to be a 400K seller, and the media is having a hard time accepting that from the Big3.....Nor is the vehicle wanting to be pushed out with $8K rebates either. I do say that marketing/advertising has done a poor job of promoting the vehicle.

The vehicle, like any other model, will grow, get bigger, it's model will change, larger engines/options implemented...sometimes it just happens a bit sooner, because other vehicles will compliment (not replace), others. Just like the CV isn't going away anytime soon because the 500 is out. It just begs to question, why not use a different name on the newer vehicles.... and at the same time, "next generation" of vehicles, will address some of the current ones negative ones.

    Greetings:

It seems this 'rumor' of the Freestyle going away after only 2 models years continues to fester. I agree with ANT that FORD has done a very poor job of promoting this great vehicle. At least those of us who already own one know of its virtues even though a few owners have had some problems. I read about the Freestyle late last year in several of the auto periodicals, took two test drives and followed this forum before purchasing my Freestyle AWD Limited in late April. I have not been disappointed in any way. Yes, it could use some more grunt on occasion, but overall the Freestyle is very capable and comfortable and an excellent value. I've had a number of passengers comment on the smooth ride, roomy & comfortable interior and handsome styling. The crossover segment is a growing one and FORD would be wise to hang onto the Freestyle or whatever they choose to call it. Are you listening FORD?

Needless to say, I love my Freestyle!

  • tim156tim156 Member Posts: 308
I looked at both the SE and SEL and decided on the SE because of the price. The SEL was four or five thousand (I don't remember now) more at the time I bought in early March. I decided on a FWD, Redfire SE with traction control and convenience package. The few extra features weren't worth the extra cost. I haven't driven in any measurable snow yet, but others have posted that the FWD handles well. The mileage is a little better with the FWD. I'm consistently getting 20mpg in the city with 2860 miles on the car. I have a trip planned for later this summer and I expect to get at least the advertised 27mpg. The time to buy is now with the employee pricing deal. You may want to consider a FWD SEL because of the pricing. I checked on the web and I can get an SEL now, for less than I paid for my SE in March. Oh well, I've been able to enjoy mine for four months. All I know, and the majority of folks posting here will agree, this is a great vehicle. Don't pass up the opportunity.

Thanks for the web site, I checked helm.com and they had them. Only one problem though, $145.00...OUCH! I'm going to wait a few months to see if Chiltons or Haynes publishes one.
  • tim156tim156 Member Posts: 308
It does help. That's a little pricey for my purpose. Maybe I'll borrow yours, don't you live across the river? Just kidding. I'm going to wait a few months to see if Chiltons or Haynes publishes one. Thanks.
  • johnclineiijohnclineii Member Posts: 2,287
The Chilton or Hanes version will have nowhere near the detail nor the specificity that the Helms ones have. The Helms is what your dealer mechanics use...the other two are aimed at shade tree mechanics.

You pays your money and takes your chances...

I went with the Silver exterior and the dark interior. I would have preferred the Merlot or the Norsea? (lighter) blue, but they weren't offered on the SE. Personally, I didn't like the dark blue combined with the lower cladding, thought the black was too dull, and didn't really like the bright red. There weren''t any green or white avail, so my choice was pretty clear. The silver seemed to fit the vehicle - looks volvo-esque.

hey bob, where do you live/drive? i'm in the northeast and drive through ct/ma/ny/pa which have a lot of hills. the mph/passenger load/payload caught my attention.

Well I did it, just got a SEL FWD ,black , tan interior on a 3 year lease on the A plan. cant wait to pick it up ,
  • fsmmcsifsmmcsi Member Posts: 792
That would be a good move - admit it is the 500 Wagon, which is not a bad thing, as car-like (instead of truck-like) wagons seem to be gaining in popularity. I hope that Ford gets rid of the two-tone exterior moldings and makes the front end identical to the new 500 front end. Looking like an SUV is probably not good for sales, given the drop in SUV demand and the association of SUVs with high fuel consumption.

Just wondering. . . .I've kinda taken a fancy to the looks of these new tall wagon from Ford. Have yet to try one. I think it might suit me as I don't tow, drive off-road, and just need the space. It puts me off when every review I read suggests 200+HP ain't enough to move this car especially when the same articles say 0-60 in 8.5 seconds. Since when is that kind of momentum considered slow? If I'm not mistaken, 0-60 in 8.5 seconds is the number these same reviewers praise to high heaven in the beefy 395HP Vortec 5.8 V8 Tahoe I currently drive. As an experienced owner of a Tahoe, I can tell you it is more than quick enough for any situation. Do you owners find the Freestyle underpowered as the reviewers claim and wishing for a more power?
  • barnstormer64barnstormer64 Member Posts: 1,106
    It's got enough power, really.

No, it won't win drag races with a Vette or the Dodge Magnum or Chrysler 300C . . but it's not supposed to, either.

For a vehicle that's 500 pounds heavier than the Taurus, with the same engine as the Taurus (well, the better of two offered in Taurus), it's amazing that it has the same 0-60 time when you think about it.
  • northlakesnorthlakes Member Posts: 368
Most who post to this discussion site would agree the power is more than adequate in the Freestyle. The CVT transmission helps keep the engine in its optimum torque range. The transmission has no traditional forward gears (pulleys and steel belt), so the typical acceleration cues one gets used to as an automatic changes gears just aren't there with the Freestyle and its CVT. It is as smooth as silk.

You can look back through the posts here, and read other people's experiences with performance and long trips while fully loaded. You can also check out the other Edmund's Forum on Freestyle actual gas mileage reports. It can make you smile if you compare it to your Tahoe. The best thing to do is take a test drive. :shades:
  • cmunizcmuniz Member Posts: 604
I agree with the 2 posts above. In addition I have been very impressed with the way the engine and CVT work together to optimize every situation, including engine braking when you are going downhill. It automatically tries to maintain speed by increasing rpms and lowering the gearing on the downhills if it senses you are applying the brakes. It's no a street racer but is very smooth and enough power for most people.
  • barnstormer64barnstormer64 Member Posts: 1,106
I forgot to mention one thing: I like my Freestyle so much that when Ford introduced its Family Price in July, I decided to trade in my 4-yr old Taurus for a 2005 Five Hundred. I made sure to get the AWD and CVT on it (just like my Freestyle).

Why? The main thing is the CVT. I just REALLY enjoy the way it shifts. It's constantly shifting, but in such small ratio increments that you never really FEEL it shift. (Some people mistakenly say that it doesn't shift . . it's always shifting, you just don't feel it).

The only way to feel anything like a shift is simply to FLOOR the pedal as rapidly as possible. THEN you can feel the rpm's jump up very quickly. Otherwise, you just never feel a downshift or upshift.

I supose some may hate that sensation, but I can hardly stand to drive a car with a standard automatic on it anymore. LOL

    Hi,
Question: Is the current Freestyle a 2005 model?

If yes, when will the 2006 model year be on sale? Are there any changes expected from the 2005 model year?'

    Thanks!

  • guy21guy21 Member Posts: 129
We have been seriously looking at this vehicle and wondered how they got the performance out of 203 hp. On the invoices, the final drive ratios with the CVT ranged from 5:20 to 5:50. Therein lies the answer. Does anyone know the overall range of ratios within the CVT itself?

Last week my FreeStyle wouldn't start on three tries. Today the same thing happened. The first attempt it would try to kick over twice and then nothing. The next two times absolutely nothing. Finally sitting for a little bit it started. It doesn't seem to me like a battery problem, it didn't sound that way when it was trying to turn over. Both times it was a quick trip inside to get something and come back to leave. Both times it has been extremely hot outside. Mid 90's with high humidity. I use the A/C, but having lived in Las Vegas for several years, I always turn the a/c off before shutting the vehicle off. I just don't know what to think. I have to drop it off with the dealer Friday morning for them to look at it.
We have had it since mid March 05. It has 6,900 or so miles on it. This is the only problem we have had with it. I hope that it isn't nothing major. Has anyone else had this type of problem? Mine is a SEL FWD.
