Hi! I have been "lurking" on this forum for over a year now and have found it very informative. I ordered a 2006 SEL FWD Shadow Grey in May and took ownership four weeks ago. I ordered all the options except the DVD player. I have been very pleased with this vehicle. I used to drive a 1999 Ford Windstar which did not give me any trouble but the mileage was getting high and I didn't want to have to replace expensive parts. A week after purchasing it, our family of four and luggage went on a 400 mile round trip. Highway mileage with the A/C on was 30 mpg! I have 1,000 miles on it now and have been getting 22.7 around town. This past week I got the windows tinted and a moonroof deflector installed. It is so nice to have the moonroof open and not hear all the wind noise! I was looking into getting body chrome on the side doors but placing it where the doors bow out, it wouldn't look right with the body cladding. I did see an SEL on the road with the chrome strip right above the cladding but it really doesn't serve any purpose being there except it looks better than where it would be functional. So for now, I just park far away from everyone else in the parking lots!

We just bought a Freestyle last month and like it very much so far. The Ford website lists ground clearance at the rear axle to be 8 inches. I used that information as part of our purchasing decision as we like to take the family out on a local beach that goes for miles. Last week I was planning to get my permit for it when I noticed that the exhaust system hangs down as low as five inches just behind the front wheels. Airing down the tires as required would bring this down to about 4 inches. The sand is very soft going through the dunes on the way out to the beach. Once there, it is usually firm and quite stony in many places. I am not happy! My local Ford dealer's service department says I shouldn't have a problem, but I'm not convinced. I've never needed low range or really gotten stuck in our previous vehicles and I've seen Subaru Outbacks out on the beach before. However, I know that exhaust will be dragging in the sand at some points and am affraid of getting hung-up or "high-centered". Ford's sales brochure even shows a Freestyle on the beach! Just for comparison, I looked at our Toyota Sienna with AWD, and it has 7 inches or more of ground clearance everywhere. Now how funny would I look with a minivan out on the beach?!? :P

I think the mpg is really sensitive on how you drive. I know when I stomp on the gas from stoplights and in general keep the rpm above 3000 then the mileage stinks, but when on cruise at 70mpg and no A/C, the mileage is great. And I think the AWD takes more gas than the 1MPG advertised difference. I have FWD.

"From January through July 2005, Ford sold 63,000 Five Hundreds + 16,000 Montegos = 79,000 total, compared to 45,000 Freestyles. "

But how many of the Five Hundred / Montego were with the CVT.

I'd guess SIGNIFCANTLY less than the 45,000 Freestyles.

" It is so nice to have the moonroof open and not hear all the wind noise! "

Did the moonroof deflector make THAT much of a difference?

I've been debating whether to get one or not. There is the "built-in" pop-up deflector, but it still can get fairly noisy.

I have no idea if you can drive a freestyle on the beach, but from what I can see the listed ground clearance it 6.3 inches.
  • greybabygreybaby Member Posts: 10
Absolutely! I can even hear the radio and talk to my kids in the back. I was going to order the moonroof deflector on line. But with the shipping, it cost the same as ordering through the dealer. They even installed it for me at no cost. They thought it was the kind that you just have to glue down but it ended up they had to drill holes and use bolts. So I am glad that I had them do it instead of my husband.

I have driven it on soft sand before, provided it's the AWD version (to test it out). In one of those stints I had to drive it over a dune and it didn't have any issues climbing it. If the mufflers scraps on anything, it's soft sand anyways, so it just moves it out of it's way.

"They thought it was the kind that you just have to glue down but it ended up they had to drill holes and use bolts. So I am glad that I had them do it instead of my husband."

NEW holes had to be drilled? I thought these things usually only required clips and existing hardware.

    Northlakes:

Actually, I'm not playing MP3 discs at all. Nor are any of the discs I'm playing burned. They are just plain-old store-bought (well, library-borrowed in the case of audiobooks) CDs. I've never experienced any problems with any of these discs until this CD player. Skips aren't nearly as noticable on audio CDs, but they occur. On audiobooks, however, it is totally unacceptable. I am average about 1 skip per minute, and they cut off anywhere from 1/2 second to 3-4 seconds from the ends of tracks.

I'm curious about the mention of this being a Visteon unit. I was under the impression this was made by Delphi, though it has the same look as the unit made by Visteon.
  • ryanbryanb Member Posts: 4
I have the FWD. (I didn't buy the AWD specifically due to the lower MPG.)

I'm not a heavy driver. My driving habit haven't really changed since I bought this car. I try to coast when I can, use cruise control when I can, rarely go above the 3000 RPM mark, but generally keep it around 2000 RPM.

I just expected better that 20 MPG when it is advertised at 27. I never expected 27. I did a mileage check during a recept all-freeway trip. I got 20.4 MPG. That's on cruise control almost the whole way.

Well, anyhow. Whatever. I can't do much about that. I just want my CD player working!
  • northlakesnorthlakes Member Posts: 368
You do have some serious disk issues. If this is your third unit, it is time to go directly to Ford Customer Service. Maybe the unit was not grounded correctly, or the Canbus connector is bad, but it seems odd that 3 units will all be bad in the same way (unless they used a hammer to install it).

Regarding Visteon, they are Ford's (independent) electronics/accessories arm so we on this site assume that is the audio unit's source. Since Delphi is General Motors' electronics house, it may not be normal for them to supply Ford with product. With second sourcing and private labeling, anything is possible. If it is a Delphi unit, their product consistency is not reassuring. :shades:

You might try one or two more experiments. Sit in the Freestyle with the radio on, but engine and other accessories off. With a CD playing, try stepping on the brakes, turning on the headlights, anything you can without the motor running. See if you get the same results as when you are driving.
  • bobw3bobw3 Member Posts: 2,989
One more thing...how many miles do you have on it? Ours got pretty poor miles for the first few thousand miles, so if you passed that point, I'd take it back to the dealer to run a diagnostic on it.
  • bigred13bigred13 Member Posts: 25
Are you folks using the 'on-board' MPG calculator or are you doing the math yourself? To get the absolute most accurate read of your freebies fuel economy, you have to do it the old fashioned way. (total miles divided by gallons used equals MPG)

The MPG tracker on your Freebie is very subjective. The manual suggest's that you reset it and then have your car on 'speed control' for at least 5 miles. This will only give you an average for that 5 miles. It's constantly changing due to overall driving conditions and driving habits.

    Ryanb,

    3 questions:

    1) Are you using name-brand fuel?
    2) What speeds are you traveling at on your highway trips?
    3) Are you re-setting the Message Center's MPG feature when you fill-up?

Gasoline from the "el-cheapo" stations frequently doesn't measure up to the standards of what is sold at Shell, Texaco, Chevron, etc... It can and will affect mileage.

It takes a lot more horsepower to go 80 mph than 70. Simply stated, excessive speed wastes fuel. I've experimented with my 2wd Freestyle and have found that at a steady 62mph (100kph) on a flat highway I achieved a 31mpg reading on the Message Center.

If your Freestyle has the message center feature, make sure you're re-setting the MPG to zero when you fill-up. Otherwise it continues to display information that includes previous tanks of gas.

One last thing... I heard on the radio the other day that the #1 complaint of Toyota Prius owner's is that their Prius's don't come even close to getting the mileage that is displayed on the sticker. People that buy Hummer's complain about it's gas mileage too. At 3 bucks a gallon, it's human nature to complain about fuel mileage.

    Barnstormer,
My husband thinks I misunderstood the service manager! I looked at the car this morning and there are two screws on the top of the moonroof deflector. I remember the service manager apologizing to me for having to wait so long to get the work done. He said it was more complicated than they allowed time for. But he might have been referring to the bracket I was also having put on. I will call him this week to find out exactly how they put it on! Didn't meant to alarm you.

One more suggestion on a possible culprit for poorer-than-advertised mileage. Check your tire pressure! Dealers will sometimes intentionally lower tire pressure to make the car ride softer on test drives.
  • northlakesnorthlakes Member Posts: 368
The Freebie should be 32 psi in front / 34 psi in the rear to meet the recommended inflation pressures. :shades:
  • bobw3bobw3 Member Posts: 2,989
I keep mine at 35psi front & rear and it goes just fine. The max psi is 44.
  • vicenacvicenac Member Posts: 229
I have a SEL FWD. Got it for the fuel economy! Reseting the computer on the highway shows me that I am getting 30 MPG - great! But after exiting freeway I drive 1 mile to home - average? 19!!!!!
On my Honda Accord (rated 20-25) I used to get from LA to Sacramento - 450 Miles - using about 15-16 Gal. It took FS almost 35 Gal - This is not funny!
  • passat_2002passat_2002 Member Posts: 468
    "This is not funny!"

Nor is it credible. That works out to 12.86 MPG highway. Given the gunplay that LA freeways are known for, maybe someone shot a hole in your fuel tank.

I wouldn't trust the onboard mpg computer until I had cross-checked it against a few tanks where I'd computed the mpg manually.

All that's telling me is that I have to take this thing back to dealer and have it checked. That was it's madden voyage two days after purchase and having to fill the tank twice and arriving in Sacto on E left me and my wallet scared.
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
When my van was new I had one early city tank that was 11 or so; my mpg was all over the map for the first several tanks and I didn't approach the EPA rating of 19/24 until 3,000 miles or so. So one aberrant tank wouldn't bother me two much. It took 10,000 miles before my mpg really leveled off (right at the EPA ratings).

You may want to give it another couple of tanks before cooling your heals at the dealer. If there was something obviously wrong, like a bad 02 sensor, your check engine light should be on.

I am doing some research for possible replacement tires for my Freestyle FWD LTD and I have a question if anyone has an answer. The 17" wheels and 215/65/17 tires have an outer diameter of about 28". The 18" wheels and 225/60/18 tires on the AWD LTD have an outer diameter of about 28.63". Does Ford re calibrate the computer and speedometer for these differences or do they just consider this close enough? I ask because if the computers can be re calibrated the options for different tires and brands is much larger. If things can't be re calibrated, the trip computer in the very least would be off. The reported mileage differences between AWD LTD with 18" wheels and the rest with 17" wheels could also be affected. I know these differences are slight, but a tire with an outer diameter of 29" (235/65/17 for example) would be 2.38 mph off at 65 mph versus my 17"s at 28". Maybe this is no big deal. I don't know.
  • explorerx4explorerx4 Member Posts: 20,814
max... it's actually kind of complicated. tires of the same size made by different manufacturers, may not actually be the same size. tirerack.com has rotations per mile for many tires. air pressure differences can also change the actual rolling circumference.

The Freestyle's computer is calibrated to match the tires that came on the vehicle. How simply or even whether this can be reset is a question for someone other than me to answer...

I saw a review of the Freestyle at www.cartv.com and they stated that Ford plans to discontinue the Freestyle after the 2007 model year. Has anyone here heard that before?? That stinks! They make a nice vehicle (as far as I know) and only run it for 3 years? What gives?

Forgive me if this has been covered before. I used to follow this forum, but since 99% of the feedback was always so positive, I didn't think it was necessary to keep following it. This vehicle is definitely near the top of my "To Buy" list, but looks like by the time I'm ready for an (pseudo-)SUV, it won't be around. :(
  • scootertrashscootertrash Member Posts: 698
The dealer can reprogram it to adjust for different size tires.

I would think the CVT would be especially sensitive to having the computer reading the wrong tire size.

They can access a menu that lists every available tire size and has a "other" selection where they can enter your tire size if it's not a stock size.
I had it done on my F-150 and Expedition.

"Just received mine today. I'll try and attack it this weekend. There is some info about a users forum that indicates a difference in installation procedure versus the supplied instructions. Hopefully, installation will go smoothly."

I read the user-forums last night (got mine in yesterday). It appears that there's an issue with the installation on the Mustang. However, one person said he also had an issue with the Five Hundred, too.

It sounds like they'll need to come up with a replacement IC on this thing to solve the issue.

There is a workaround (discussed on the site), but it results in the dimmer not working on the radio, and also the speed-volume control doesn't work after this workaround.

For now, I'm planning on holding off, since I will probably be paying somebody to do the install.

Let me know how it goes if you do it this weekend. Also, any hints about getting the radio in/out, and where you hook the thing up would be appreciated (maybe some pics?). If it's easy enough, I might attempt it myself.

    Hi guys,

I have 2005 SEL, nautical blue, with shale leather interior. i was going to buy mats from here http://www.drivingcomfort.com/index.cfm?fa=p&pid=657&addcar=1

i got that link from this board. Any suggestions on color, choices are beige, black or grey. stupid question, but i am not real good with colors.

    thanks

Something is definately NOT right if people are wasting 35 gallons of gas for 450 miles.

Brand new AWD SEL... I mean 4 days old!!!! Less than 200 miles.

Went on a 2100 mile long trip. Averaged 24.5 on the major highway stints. Cruise @ 72-77 depending on traffic. Loaded with self, wife, 2 kids, rear seats folded flat and STUFFED to the ROOF with crap. Oh yeah, it was in the high 80's in GA last week, so the A/C was on the ENTIRE WAY!!!

If you are not getting the mileage that is posted on the sticker, then you are abusing your vehicle (or don't know how to properly calculate the correct MPG).

Don't believe all this hype in the media about 'inflated' mileage on the sticker. If you drive like a normal person you'll do just fine.

I have noticed that since I drove a manual xmsn before this, it was easier to make the transition to the CVT. My wife on the other hand, who drives an auto, tended to be a little heavier in the foot during stoplight-to-stoplight driving. Felt it should be moving faster with the initially higher revs.

But go ahead, keep blaming the car. Ford is already going to discontinue it... If I wanted an exploder, I would have purchased one! :surprise:
  • globecanvasglobecanvas Member Posts: 45
I doubt it would be possible for driving habits to push mpg all the way down to 12. If that's the mileage you're getting, you should take the thing in to the dealer to look for a fuel leak or some other major problem. I wouldn't blame the driver here...
  • barnstormer64barnstormer64 Member Posts: 1,106
The only way I can see 12 mpg is by doing lead-footed CITY driving.

What I would try (in a situation like that) is to get up to cruising speed on the highway, then reset the mpg computer, and see what it said over a few miles of driving at constant speed. That would be the first step, anyway.
  • sj freebiesj freebie Member Posts: 22
I'll keep all posted as to how the installation goes. Someone in an earlier post described how to get down through the flip up storage box to gain access to the back of the radio. It sounded pretty straight forward. I just have to remember who posted the message, and what for originally.

Regarding the workaround for the audio box that prevents the panel lights from dimming, we would prefer that. In fact, I just got back today from having the 10K service at the dealer. I asked them to modify the software to keep the panel lights bright when the headlamps are on as we drive that way often during the daylight. Since the panel lights dim, they are impossible to see in daylight. Unfortunately I wasn't allowed to talk to the technician who worked on the car. I was simply told "That's how it is supposed to be. If you can find someone else to modify the code for you, go ahead". I may just unplug the data cable like Logjam suggested. The speed controlled volume doesn't really seem to do much, so we wouldn't miss that either.

    Regards,

    Allan

We took a little trip today with our FWD Limited. Driving about 65 for 35 miles, the mileage was 28.3. Our usual city mileage with a some highway is usually in the 19 range. The mileage has increased since new.
  • bruneau1bruneau1 Member Posts: 468
I am going to change the 215/65/17 tire to a 225/65/17 later on. The radius is about the same as the 225/60/18 on the Limited AWD. This means that there should be no problems with room. However, the speedo will be off about 1 mile at 60. I think a 235/65/17 may be going too far. ??
  • indybellindybell Member Posts: 40
There have been several posts regarding the recommended inflation pressures. 32 psi front / 34 psi rear.

That may be true for FWD Freestyles, but the door sticker on my AWD Freestyle says 32 PSI on both front and rear.

I might add that when I picked up my vehicle, all the tires were overinflated. Some as much as 8 pounds and none less than 5 pounds over! My recommendation is to buy yourself a good digital gauge, check them regularly, and check the door sticker to see what pressures are applicable to your particular vehicle. Checking the spare should be on the list too.
  • maymaymaymay Member Posts: 16
Dig around the forums here, someone posted (in the last month) that they'd talked to a Ford rep. that said that isn't true. Google around, you won't find any statements from Ford about discontinuing it. At the very least, if the Freestyle does go bye-bye it appears there is a Mercury version (Meta One) coming in the 08 model year.

Nobody I run into has ever heard of the Freestyle. Ford's marketing is scant. The dealers around here (San Francisco Bay Area) don't seem to know much about the car, espcially some of the finer points of the gizmos and gadgets. The brochure is pathetic when it comes to anything more than pretty pictures and color choices. Other carmakers advertise they have Bluetooth, and Ford neglects to mention anywhere that they have an accessories department where you can get it. Only found out after playing around that the radio displays RDS information. They mention they have a DVD player, but none of the functions it has.

We bought a Freestyle because it was the safest, most flexible car we could get into at a decent price - not because of any advertising by Ford. If the car doesn't survive, it will be Ford's marketing department's fault, not the car itself. I never could pack into an Expedition what I can get into the Freestyle, and the hip-height seating is the best thing since sliced bread. The ergonomics are fantastic, nothing is out of reach and the flip-fold seats are, heh, the best thing since sliced bread too! But I discovered all this by playing around in one by myself. The car sells itself, but as of yet Ford seems clueless as to how to drag people in to check it out in the first place. And bland styling? I came out of a store today and looked for our new car, and saw a pretty blue pearl gem sitting in the parking lot.

That was a very longwinded way of saying that if they had a commercial that showed how fabulous the car is, and put more specs in their brochure, we would've bought one without much research months ago.

"How did you get the radio to display RDS information?"

If I'm not mistaken, you have to have the Audiophile System radio for the RDS feature. Pretty much limited to the Limited's I'd say. Alas, mine is a mere SEL.

Thanks for the note. Though I keep all tires at 34 PSI, the door sticker on my AWD SEL says 32 PSI in front/ 34 PSI in back. It was built in December, 2004. They may have revised things for newer Freebies :shades:

Does it have the 17" or 18" tires?

My Limited (18" tires, also built in Dec 2004) says 32psi front and back.

It may be a tire size thing (34 vs 32 psi in back)

I remember the message, but I don't remember the details.

Where do you intend to put the RCA outputs in your installation?

I'm wondernig about those two "vacant" spots down by the Traction Control, Rear Sensor Control, Flasher. I don't know if they're easy to get to or not. But was thinking that having an RCA input in each one of those spots would be kinda neat.
  • maymaymaymay Member Posts: 16
The RDS info just appears, but yest I have the Limited. Why they can't put it in all of them... I just figured it was perhaps in all but maybe the most basic system that comes with the SE. There is zilch in their brochure about it, seems pretty dumb to leave out features that would intrigue a lot of people.

I'm not big into sound systems, but I was trying out the DVD player that I ended up with because that's what they had left of the 05's here. In the movie I plunked in there was a chopper flying back and forth chasing down a car, and honestly the sound was more fun than at a movie theater. Sounded like the chopper was over my head flying back and forth. But I'm not an expert. I'm sure people with a finely tuned ear to that sort of thing would see room for improvement, but the sound was pretty awesome for watching a movie on a tiny screen in a car.

We are outgrowing our 6 yr old Volvo wagon and considering a 06 Freestyle Limited. I have not owned a domestic for over 10 yrs - two BMWs, Volvo, Saab and a few Japanese and a Plymouth over the last 15 yrs. I have kicked the tires on the Freestyle and other than the cheap plasticky interior bits I am impressed in its un-Ford like qualitites (hope I don't offend any owners). The fit and finish, ride, tightness, seating, features (and price point) all seem first rate. Ford seems to have put a lot of thought into this vehicle. I would like to go back to a Volvo but would need to move up to XC 90 and just too much $$ (and other than the badge, is there that much more value?). Other competitors just don't have the package, that I can see. Not interested in minivans or full truck SUvs.

I am firmly on the fence. My instinct and past experience with domestics says stay away but the practical side of me says this appears to be what we need - Is this Freestyle the real deal?-
