The ride along Terrapin Ridge is worth taking in your car, the view is fantastic. As you come into Galena, they used to have a billboard sign that said, "Congatulations, you have survived U S Rt 20". The road, U S 20 along Terrapin Ridge is one of the most scenic in Ilinois.

I was reading that thread. Are you saying he was serious about the blown Tacoma? I really thought he was joking around.

I'm starting to think the angry Toyota owner believes the bovine feces he types.

I do get quite a chuckle from some of his comments; "a shorter wheelbase is better for towing because it turns around easier."

My goodness, with that great theory maybe Toyota should put that wonderful I-force v8 in the Tacoma and up the tow rating. After all, it will turn around easier than even the Tundra, so it must be a better tow vehicle.

I was an EO in '73-'74 which unfortunatly for me meant driving an evacuation bus in Viet Nam and then driving a bus in San Diego.I never did get to use construction equip which is what I signed up for.

Towing with Tundra's short wheelbase would be O.K. if there was LESS bed BEHIND the axle.Load hualing would be better too ,but in town manuverability would suffer and that's one of Tundra's strong points.Just gotta pick whats right for you, hualing or parking in tight spaces.

the rear of the bed, how could they use the same setup for the Tacoma?
  • ndahi12ndahi12 Member Posts: 235
and it is simply a pleasure. Squat? What squat? I load approx 500 lbs in the bed and tow 4000 lbs and still run up the grapevine in 3rd gear doing 70-75.

There are a few occasions when I shift into 2nd gear for the steep incline, but otherwise I use 3rd gear for the hills and overdrive on the flats.

I had my brother tow with the Tundra the other day and he could not maintian a speed below 70 mph. The truck is so smooth and so composed you do not even notice that you are towing at that speed.

We all know what a lemon the Rado is. Just go to NHTSA and look at the MANY problems recorded for the 02 Rado and the ONE problem on record for the 02 Tundra. It is a shame that Chevy has been making big trucks for 50 years and still produce trucks with so many problems. The Tundra does have problems, but the problems pale by comaprison to what the Rado has. The Tundar is only in its 3rd year of production EVER and it has less problems than the Rado that has been in production for more than 30 YEARS.

Moreover, 2/3 of full siaze truck owners use them for regular commuting and work them on occasion. Toyota did its market research and created a truck that appelas to that demographic. Do you want Toyota to creat a truck that appeals to 1/3 of the demographic? Does that make sense? With time Toyota will expand the Tundra line to include a HD truck that will be a work horse.

"I'm starting to think the angry Toyota owner believes the bovine feces he types."

A certain Ford owner may be just a little bit angry?

"I don't have to tow with a Tundra to know it is not as good as a Peterbuilt for towing"

No one claimed this. I just claimed that the Tundra is the best 1/2 ton for towing. Can your towing experience dispute this? If not, then you are not really adding any useful information to this topic - are You?
  • kg11kg11 Member Posts: 530
With anything couldn't know which is the best 1/2 ton for towing.Reading a magazine article then posting select pieces of it don't make you an expert. It makes you a plagiarist.

Good luck on this one now.

NDAHI"2/3 of full size truck owners use them for regular commuting and work them on occation Toyota did its market research and created a truck that appeals to that demographic.Do want Toyota to create a truck that appeals to 1/3 of the demographic?"
That's exactly what this topic is about, and exactly what I want.Until Toyota builds it I have no choice but to drive something else.

OOOH, am I supposed to be impressed you're shopping for a CADILLAC? And I need to "step up" and buy a new car or truck? New Yorkers, what can I say?

Let me get this straight - you have never towed with a Tundra and you don't know anyone that has.

You are somehow posting about how superior your truck is. Wow!

Which 1/2 ton truck has a snow plow warrantied by the manufacturer?
  • ndahi12ndahi12 Member Posts: 235
weren't you the one that posted this:

"Alot has been said about Allison being the best A/T for pickups, but my experience tells me otherwise.Mine has been replaced twice and the third one makes noise and I can feel torque in the drive train imediatly on start-up while still in park.Does anybody NOT have "the noise"?Gm is telling me this is as normal as engine knock or oil consumption.
    kip"

How disingenuous can you get? Here you are saying that the Tundra is not heavy duty enough for you and the truck that you drive has had its HEAVY DUTY tranny repalced TWICE and it seems you have knock and oil consumption. Yep, that seems like HD to me :-P
  • oldharryoldharry Member Posts: 413
I never said The Tundra was a bad truck, or that it couldn't tow. I have said that I have towed, and with a number of different vehicles. Having some experience, I know what features I like for a tow vehicle.

    Two I especially like are:

    Long wheel base
This gives a steadier feel at high speeds with gusty winds. Yes a short wheel base will
work, but it makes me more tired at the end of a long trip.

Short distance from the rear axel to the hitch
This gives less sway to the trailer on sharp curves, and changing lanes. Yes a longer
overhang will work, but again is more tiring on long fast trips.

Engines and transmissions are not a problem with any of the four 1/2 tons as far as capacity is concerned. I don't bad mouth the Toyota. Do you bad mouth the Chevies because you are suffering buyer's remorse?

Tell us now about your towing experiences. Have you towed with a Chevy? A Ford? A Dodge? If not how can you tell us the Toyota is superior to any or all of them. If you haven't towed with all three others, then obviously you don't know if the Toy is as good, let alone any better. Put the same standards of experience on yourself, that you seem to be demanding from me.

This is such BS. I have heard that BS about a long wheel base from the chev/ford guys BEFORE I towed with my truck and it concerned me. But after I towed I found out that you guys are full of it.

I tow with my truck once a month at high speeds and through gusty winds driving through mountian passes. The truck drives like it is on glass. Smooth and steady with no vibration at all. As for more tired, maybe you are out of shape and it is not the wheel base that is the culprit. After racing for a whole weekend, I tow home fro 2.5 hours and I feel fine.

Why do you guys persist with this nonesense. I am telling you that I tow at 70-75 mph and all you can say is the long wheel base gives better stability.

Why do you guys have an axe to grind with the Tundra. It barely makes a dent in the truck sales and you guys are up in arms about it. The Tundra only sells 100,000 units a year. That is it. I have not seen a more insecure lot than the chev/ford truck owners.
  • kg11kg11 Member Posts: 530
Dude, don't misunderstand! I didn't say GM was hi-quality but it's never left me or the load Tundra won't hual stranded. My 2500HD has been in the shop a total of 7 days and yes I tried to make GM buy it back, but it WILL TOW 15,000 and THAT'S what I (and others) want from Toyota.People buy GM,Ford and Dodge to tow HEAVY loads because they can do it.This topic is about the Toyota that DOESN'T EXIST.Tundra is NOT a 3/4 ton nor does it have an even moderatly big engine.Hell no it isn't HD enough for me.If I wanted a half ton I would have bought a half ton(F150) with the biggest optional engine(which rules out Tundra again!) No hard feelings buddy,it's just not enough truck for what I want to do.

Because deep down they're afraid the imports will take over the truck market, just like they did with everything else...I'm sure if we could go back to the 1970s when the imports made their entrance, we'd be hearing the same "axle grinding" from these folks!

i ALWAYS USE short sentences. I find
its easier for u 12 yos to read !

Toyota will not warranty the Truck or
the plow either...easier to understand now?

Fish were biting great today ! Threw them
all back in the river. Darn kids don't wanna
clean em. Woman don't wanna cook em !
But a great afternoon anyway !
  • plutoniousplutonious Member Posts: 799
My first car was a 1974 Corolla, yellow with the black vinyl interior and 4 speed manual. Good car. Battery lasted 14 years and sold it with well over 200K miles on it, with the original clutch. It did need a new head gasket, however, at around 200K miles. And to think the competition at the time was the Chevy Vega!

I too hope Toyota will make a 3/4 ton big truck. Give them a little time, they're just getting started in this market segment.

you're simply looking for a truck that will haul/tow large loads. I personally don't classify you as a Chev boy lol, since you did admit you owned plenty of Toyotas prior. I think there are a lot of guys who pass on Toyota not because of quality or reliability issues, but because it simply isn't designed to be towing 5+ tons. Once you set that as a priority, the Toy is out period, no matter how well it fared in tests or was ranked.

Its gonna be really interesting just how much of an impact a Toyota HD truck makes in the market. If they can come out with something that will truly go punch for punch with the big boys, then there might be a drastic swing in Toys favor. Yet you have to remember, they seem to always market a slightly different, sometimes smaller truck. Most likely with the light duty owner in mind. Lets see what they can do, and hopefully others can realize that there simply isn't enough brute force from Tundra, when compared to whats ultimately available.
  • kg11kg11 Member Posts: 530
I've towed 8000+ and 1000 in the bed.I know it's not much more than Tundra's rating but I would never tow 100% capacity at freeway speeds after towing with a Tacoma for 5 years.Your Tundra with 4k behind it is comparable to the most I tow with the 2500HD and the Tundra would tow my 3900+ ski boat just fine but I was shopping for a BIG boat and didn't want to get too close to max capacity.
Tundra IS a good choice for what YOU use it for,and someday Toy will make one for the other 1/3 of us.They don't right now.
