NV200 based on a car platform? Not that I'm aware of. Not sure about the TransitConnect—but even if it is, it sure has been beefed up.

Yep, Transit Connect was (loosely) based on the previous Fiesta. I'm sure it was severely beefed up, though.
  • robr2robr2 Member Posts: 8,805
The Transit Connect is based on the original Focus platform.

The NV200 uses the Nissa B platform (accoding to Wiki) which is shared with Cube, Juke, Leaf as well as the Renault Clio II and Twingo II.

Great News - it's also shared by the Dacia Sandero. :D

I've always figured it was only a matter of time before your 'EzPass' was used against you. If one does 60 miles from point A to point B in 45 minutes, the average speed is enough to land you in cuffs. Or, like with photo radar, you simply get the ticket in the mail (billed against the credit card on file).

But just to clear - this is not the case.

    I figured.

I've seen this in Brazil since I was a kid.

The Chevy 500 pickup and van was basically a Chevette with a live axle rear and half the body chopped off:

They're beefed up for bigger payloads, naturally. I'm sure the rear suspension is very different.

True, Rob, I was just siting another way in which your actions can be monitored and guilt assessed.

I did hear that EzPass was used in criminal proceedings to track whereabouts (someone denied entering Manhattan in events surrounding a crime, yet the toll records indicated otherwise), but I figured that someday it would also be used in speed tracking.

I've had my Garmin tell me my top speed was 120mph! I don't think our SUV will go that fast! Somehow, I think a good lawyer would be able to bail you out of that one pretty easily.

Hmm, I might have to start turning my cell phone off when I drive!
  • tsytsy Member Posts: 1,551
Well, in a strange twist of fate, I sold my miata to someone who would use it since I wasn't driving it. I let a friend borrow the RX8 on a cold and bad rainy day here with fresh summer tires. Unfortunately, car spun and damaged both sides of the car and my insurance told me it's a total loss.

Of course now my wife thinks sports cars are evil and has banned me from getting another.

So now I'm looking for a fun car that can hold 4 people that get's good gas mileage. I'm not sure it exists. Maybe I'll take a look at the new Fiat.

What kind of mileage does a Mini get?

I went and looked at Mini's. The salespeople don't seem to care if you want to buy a car or not. It's like it's your privilege to buy a car from them!
    Just not a great experience.

But a Mini clubman is something I'm considering, but they are quite expensive and a little too quirky.

I'd actually love to wait for the new Impreza, but I don't think I can wait that long.

I'm actually considering a golf TDI- just nervous about buying a VW.

I'm waiting for the cloth-top Fiat 500 to go for a test drive.

Not a lot of power, though. They do cost a bunch less than a MINI.

Bummer about the RX, you just got it!

Since the NJ Turnpike has used a toll-ticket system for decades, they've always had the capability to time you between exits, but they never have used it for speed enforcement.

I also heard that regarding using EZ Pass records in a criminal case but IIRC, they had been served with a subpeona to release the information.

I venture if it is ever used to issue speeding tickets, the vast majority of users will go back to cash.

Imagine that nightmare of gridlock, as in some places the majority of lane are now unmanned.
  • tsytsy Member Posts: 1,551
Wow, just read about the 500. It's even smaller than a Mini.

Actually, you can get a base mini for about the same as a sport 500. The mini has more horsepower too.

Yeah, it's kinda sad. I drove it maybe 4 times and didn't even get a picture of it! :(

C&D has a comparo in the mag I just received yesterday. Haven't read the article yet.

The disappointing thing is the Fiat only got 1mpg better, despite being smaller and a lot slower.

Uh huh. The RX-8 did not magically spin on its own! Did your car not have stability control? It's been standard a while on the RX-8, but memory serves me that it was an option on early years.

Summer tires can be scary in the cold, no doubt. Hell, Bob and I can both attest that certain *performance all-season* tires can do funny things in the cold if you're driving aggressively.

But that's the rub. You have to be driving aggressively. At the very least the person who did this would be off my xmas card list. I'd probably ask him to pay the deductible too, if they weren't embarassed / thoughtful enough to offer.

I'm actually considering a golf TDI- just nervous about buying a VW.

100% in agreement. I was very close to buying a Golf TDI with DSG in Fall 2010, but for a variety of reasons I didn't pull the trigger.

I've been reading VW and diesel forums on Edmunds for about the last year. The high pressure fuel pump issue-- across brands, not specific to VW-- definitely scares me. I think it's caused by poor quality fuel, btw. Just MHO... I don't think every single mfg is screwing up, that just doesn't seem likely. And everyone does have some HPFP problems.

And then the second issue, the far bigger concern, is that I am just not convinced in VW's reliability as a brand. I'm spoiled because I've had an ultra-reliable car for 99,935 miles, and I'm not interested in a vehicle that's in the shop several times a year even if it's covered under warranty.

I might buy a diesel within the next few years... I'd say 30-50% chance. However I am 90% certain that diesel won't be a VW.

    'Nuff said? :)
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
VW needs to figure out a way to sell that here, and drop the silly mega-cheap 2.slow models.
  • tsytsy Member Posts: 1,551
Yeah, he admitted he turned the stability control off. Overconfident. Didn't believe in electronic nannies.

Ironic, weren't we talking about the stupidity of turning stability control off not too long ago?

Apparently he just started driving so the tires were cold, it just started raining (which is when the roads are the most slippery) and he was on medium speed turn at the top of a hill. It was a perfect combination of a lot of bad factors. :(

Luckily insurance is going to cover pretty much everything I put into the car since I got a good deal in the first place, so other than the time and aggravation at least I'm not out any money. :D

I hear you Colin. I keep hearing how VW is improving, and diesel engines should last forever. There just aren't many alternatives (MB, BMW, Audi) for a diesel.

I actually drove a Honda CR-Z which is not bad, but there's no back seat and it's kinda funky looking.

Maybe by the time I decide the new Impreza will be out!

Stability Control off in the rain?

Who does he think he is? Ayrton Senna?

Senna complained the chassis setup was bad and he had no grip (!).

In Italy, driving on the autostrada can be interesting because they actually use the toll cards (similar to the NJ tpke cards) to determine your speed and time, which is calculated when you get off. the machine also calculates the fine that you pay on the spot for speeding! My friend and I were driving back from Florence to Imola and at a certain point, he slowed down. However, when we got to Imola, our friend was the toll taker, so there wasn't any extra payment (;-)

The rain god! He could really drive in the rain. There's something about him that sparks devotion. Schumacher would go on to greater numbers, but never had the same devoted following.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Shumacher also never had a fierce rival to legitimize his championships. Senna had Prost and others.

The only time I recall Shumacher passing Senna, ironically, was when Senna died.

They do have regular and extended cabs now. LOL

Actually, I wouldn't mind one of those, not at all. You have to look the other way when the gas bill comes, but you'll be having so much fun you probably won't care.
  • rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
Raptor only comes in Super Cab and Crew Cab. Payload on the Super Cab is under 1000 pounds, and the Crew Cab's is just over 1000 pounds.

It's a play truck, and nothing more.

The Outback grew a lot and it became nearly redundant. It had to be 2 sizes bigger than it was. GM did well with the Lambdas because I think they hit the sweet spot in terms of size.
  • saedavesaedave Member Posts: 694
Poor fuel economy alone suggests the Tribeca is a poor fit to future plans. Real world mpg must be at least 30% worse than the Outback with CVT.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Tribeca competitors often have 280-300+ HP and 6 speed autos.

Without update since, what, 2007 or so? It's a knife at a gun fight.

    G'day

I am not surprised,. The Tribeca has always looked fat to me and appears to be little different to other similar offerings.

This is a cultural reference which will be missed by non-Australians, but I have always seen the similarity to Fatso the Wombat.

Can't decide between manual Forester verses Outback. Any advise?

I have only test driven the manual Outback. I noticed that, with 6 speeds, it was easy to "miss" the proper gear. Anyone have that problem? Would the 5-speed Forester minimize that problem?

The Forester seems more practical. Any advantages to the Outback? Any advantages to either for safety in crashes?
  • rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788

The Outback has a gear indicator on the instrument cluster, while the Forester doesn't (at least not yet). That helps with reminding the driver as to what gear he/she is in. Now that may seem like a silly thing, but with quiet cabins and close-ratio gearboxes, it can be an issue—especially since the the Outback has 6 gears, whereas the Forester has 5 gears. I know I often find myself driving for miles in 4th, thinking I'm in 5th in my WRX.

Now, if you're talking about "shifting gears," I don't think there's much difference between the Forester and Outback. I've driven both, and I don't recall having any problems.

    Advantages?

Forester has a better angle of approach and angle of departure, which helps with off-roading.

The Forester is a bit more fun to drive, as it's a bit more nimble.

The Outback is larger and more comfortable, has a few more creature comforts, and has a larger NAV screen. My guess is it would be more comfortable on trips, as it's roomier and quieter.

If the Forester manual trans is only available in the base model with poor lumbar support, there is a potential problem. I don't know how comfortable the Outback base model seats are.

I got almost instant back ache from a base Forester. I bought a Forester XT Limited which is very comfortable, but they are auto trans.

Sit in each model's seats long enough to be sure you are comfortable.

I like the narrower and shorter body of the Forester for city use. My Forester turbo has much better real world city fuel economy than my previous 3.0 liter Outback 6 cylinder. Best fuel economy would be the Outback 4 with CVT automatic.
