I have a 2004 MDX and have the same problem...gas tank sloshes. And you can hear it distinctly. Acura should have a fix for this. My other cars don't slosh.

Please tell me what has sold those of you on the MDX over the Lexus GX470? Other than the GX costing more. I don't need a third row, will likely never go off-road (possibly beach driving here in Florida), and am torn equally between the two vehicles. GX looks better but MDX w/NAV is more practical inside with XM radio, center console more business-friendly. Will I really save money on gas with the V-6? Will be buying in less than 30 days.

    Thanks
  • dave210dave210 Member Posts: 242
While you may never use the third row in the MDX or GX470, the real issue I had was in the GX470, when you're not using the third row seats, instead of folding flat into the floor out of sight, they fold up against the third row windows, so when you're backing out of a parking space, you have NO view out your side back windows.

And while both offer back-up cameras standard with the navigation systems, when I was test driving in 2003, the Lexus did not even offer that, making backing out of a parking space scary. Plus, you shouldn't have to soley rely on a backup camera to tell you whether or not you're about to hit something; I'd like some real view, too.

You could though take the third row seats out permanently, but then you have to figure out where you'll put them.

    MDX:

    - drives more like a car

    - less off-road ability (for 99% of us this is fine)

    - better navigation system

    - costs some $5-$7,000 less comparably equipped than Lexus

    - more useful third row and much more useful use of cargo space and visibilty when not using the third row

    - XM radio and bluetooth factory standard with Touring package

    GX470:

    - Lexus service

    - Lexus luxury

    - more rugged look

    - Lexus name

    - more off-road competent

    - more expensive

    - less useful third row and less useful way of getting rid of the third row when not in use.

My 05 touring also experiences intermittant lack of heat. Got a call today from service manager, Acura is aware of problem and is sending a new "control module" for the climate system. I should expect a call from the service dept in the next week or 2

received recall notice for defective climate control module in the mail today

I am torn between the two vehicles. Which one will give me more reliability, better resale in four years, better ride.better traction?
  • leonivleoniv Member Posts: 120
The rx will give you better resale I think, but the MDX's resale value isn't bad either (at least in the ATL area). With reliability, again both are very good, but it appears (based on reading in forums and CR) the rx might hold a slight edge there as well. Comparing the two with resale value and reliability is really splitting hairs I think, can't lose either way. Better ride, I think that's a personal taste, depends on what you prefer. Traction, haven't driven either in inclement weather or at the limits so can't commment. Maybe Edmunds has a road test you can look at for help with the traction part. Good luck.

if you're looking for resale value, both MDX & RX will be replace soon with new designs or/and technology. So, dealers will tell you that no one cares for the older models. Happened to me with the Odyssey. Although I receive about a 50% trade in value for that minivan. Which I had for a little more than 3 years and only 38k miles. Also, the Odyssey suppose to have the best resale value of all vehicles.

RX will have a new model, the hybrid 400RX. I heard it will give you unbelievable mileage but with a higher premium that will take a few years of ownership to make up.

Most website indicates that MDX will be replace with a new design. Most likely for 2006, meaning this fall with a bigger engine 3.8L. It will probably incorporate the RL's SH-AWD and the TL's interior design. Check out the new RDX (Acura's new SUV) which will be almost the same size as the Lexus RX (if not smaller.) The new MDX will probably be much more expensive. Since the new RDX will probably be in the 30's. Wouldnt be surprise if it increases by almost 10k. Since the new premium Odyssey will run almost 40k.

For your info, I purchase the 05 MDX. Knowing there will be a new model next year. But with past experience, Honda/Acura/Toyota/Lexus usually never gives its consumer a good price for the first few years. Right now, (from my exp and reading others in this forum) MDX avg selling price is running bet 500 - 1,000 over invoice. Close to 1k over invoice if you want the NAV and closer to invoice for base models.

I thought the ride for the RX & Highlander was very nice but needed a decent 3rd row. Highlander added the 3rd row to there existing body design for only 2 rows. Pilot/MDX has probably the largest 3rd row for mid-size SUVs.

Finally, just received a Climate Control recall for the 05 MDX. It's just a software update. If you're planning to pick up the MDX, ask the dealer to confirm that the gas tank is not faulty. Ive heard that a few MDX has faulty gas tanks, poorly installed. (read from this forum and websites with Acura recalls) This Gas Tank recall happen last year, Nov 10th. I dont think I have this problem but I will check it out.

Acura RDX (indicates as prototype but it's pretty definitely, this will be the one. so, this will hint that MDX design will be chg)

My nav locked up when my MDX was only a couple weeks old. When it happened it also caused all functionality of the controls (heater, air cond.,fan speed, etc.) to be frozen. After turning ignition off for 15-20 minutes it all started working again. My heater has NEVER worked properly. The seatbelt warning light doesn't work for the passenger seat. I feel this is very poor quality for a "luxury" car and I hate to waste my time taking it back to the dealer when I figure they probably can't or won't fix it anyway.

I noticed that my '04 mdx gets easily scratched. my suv is keeped in the garage and sometimes as I walk out or in, the garage, my clothes at times brushes with the paint and you can see lines in the paint. Do they put clear coating on the paint before delivery or not? On my other car, a VW, there is no scratches, I guess it's attributed with a clear coating. Does anybody have any experience? I appreciate any inputs.
  • otis123otis123 Member Posts: 439
Is it black? If so, it goes with the territory. My black 2001 LLBean H6 Outback gets scratched just wiping the snow off of it. That's why we went with the sage color for our 2004 MDX.
  • sbcookesbcooke Member Posts: 2,297
The silver on our 2002 has worn well. Very few scratches and I clean it off with the push broom in the winter time.
  • gearhead10gearhead10 Member Posts: 84
I've noticed the same thing so the clearcoat on the MDX may be on the soft side. The clear on my Audi is fairly hard (but once scratched also hard to buff off) so VW cc may be similar. Scratches on dark colors show up more easily than lights/metallics.

I own a 2003 MDX with 44,000 miles. When I turn left or right from a stop, I feel a vibration in the steering wheel. I have new tires and a new alignment. Any ideas? Thanks!

    What speed? Under 10 MPH?

I have a 2001 MDX with 31,000 miles. It seems like I can feel every bump in the road. I have Goodyear Tires on it. Will different tires make a difference ?

    Hi All,

Just rtecently purchased a new 2005 MDX. Have 1000 miles on car. Recently had transmission replaced. Also have loud clunking noise coming from under the car, so was in the dealership yesterday. They said it was the gas sloshing (gas sloshing shouldn't equate to a clunking noise). Anyway, they will connect me to the area rep. when he is at dealership in 2 weeks. So yes, the 2005 MDX's DO have the problem, and no, i do not believe it is the gas sloshing. I intend to get the vehicle fixed or will pursue legal action since I didn't spend 37k to hear chronic clunking coming from my car. Hope this helps.

This an old post so you probably already got an answer. I am purchasing a 2005 and asked the dealer the same question as I seemed to recall seeing something that said you could replace the donut on a 2005 MDX. The answer is that you can on both the 2004 (and probably earlier, as well) and the 2005. There is a difference however in that the 2005 MDX has a piece of plastic that drops down and hides the bottom part of the full size tire, whereas in the 2004 model you can see about the bottom 2 inches of the full size spare below the bumper.

Did you have to call Acura for this? Or Dealer? I have a problem of not getting heat when I set "Full Auto" and to a temperature clearly above what is inside.

    Thanks

Thanks for your inputs on scraches. And yes, my MDX is black. At least, I feel better, knowing that black can mar easily. Next is my Navigation system. Sometimes, my voice command do not work. No matter how many times I pull the voice control, it just don't work. But, when you turn off the engine and re-start, then chances are, it works 90 %. I think that mine, a 2004 MDX, is not up to date. For instance, I know a place that can get me there in a distance of 15 miles, but, just to check the accuracy of the navi., it took me to the same place after traveling 24 miles the other way around. Does anybody else have this experience? Please share your experiences. Thank you.
  • mjtianmjtian Member Posts: 48
I've never experienced this on my '02 MDX, although it only has 17,500 mi on it and it was re-aligned during the 15K workup last year....I know I should drive it more. I took it on my recent 1200 mi trip and I was constantly doing around 75-80 and even topped out at 90 few times and the MDX had no problems what so ever. Maybe you need to have your tires and alignment checked.
  • mjtianmjtian Member Posts: 48
I started to notice some annoying squeeks on my 2002 MDX's brakes. I took delivery of the vehicle on April 2002 after 5 months wait list. I pampered the vehicle ever since and today it only has 17k miles on it. How long does the average brakes last on the MDX? Any suggestions? Should I have the Dealers replace them? I am afraid that as soon as I ask them to look at something, they'll replace it.....I never trust dealers. Thanks.

Have 02 with over 30k miles. Brakes squeak in reverse. Lots of lining left.

I am considering buying a 2001 MDX with 60,000 miles on it from a friend who owns a Honda dealership. Any thoughts regarding this purchase or obtaining an extended warranty? I am a little nervous that the factory warranty has expired but comforted by the fact that my friend could do a lot of work at his Honda dealership.

    Hello,

Yes, I also had that clunking noise coming from the rear under the car on my 2003 MDX. I also had a clunking noise coming from the brakes @ 6700 miles. Dealer said the clunk noise from rear is the gas sloshing around ( normal for Acura/Honda ) But for a Luxury vehicle thats a no no!!!!As for the brakes the dealer says can not fix thats normal for the car when first pressing the brakes. I couldn't stand this anymore so I traded the MDX for a 2004 fully loaded Lexus RX330. The quality of lexus is fantastic. No problem with the RX so far.

Not sure what your original question was on scratches, but I recently purchased Mr. Clean AutoDry system. Since it eliminates hand-drying your vehicle, it can eliminate some self-imposed scratches. I'm fanatical about keeping my car spotless (especially my windows), and this system is the best thing since sliced bread! I can now clean my car and my wife's in less time it took me to clean one car!
  • otis123otis123 Member Posts: 439
How is it quicker? What does it do?
  • phillybigeasyphillybigeasy Member Posts: 31
No need to hand dry the car or clean the windows. Just spray the car after washing, and it dries similar dishes in a dishwasher - no spots!
  • mjtianmjtian Member Posts: 48
Just a tip on cleaning windows, I have been told by several people including someone that works at a Lexus Dealership that one of the best ways to clean windows/windshields is to use News Papers. I have tried it since and it worked great. No streaks! It especially helps during morning driving with the Sun beaming the front wind shield, any streak makes a real pain.
  • fndlyfmrflyrfndlyfmrflyr Member Posts: 668
Mr. Clean does NOT work on vehicles with a high silicone paint protection applied (high end car wax or high end waterless wash and shine product).

I purchased a Mr. Clean and it did not work at all on any of my cars, but worked perfectly on my friends' cars that had not been waxed recently. I called the manufacturer and e-mailed them also. I received a response that said it does not work well on cars with high quality waxed finishes or when high silicone waterless products are used on the car. I use both. The store refunded my money, but the manufacturer sent me coupons for another unit and a refill. I tried the second one with the same results. The car stayed wet for hours and left water spots all over. It did not matter if soft water was used.

When I first drive 04 MDX in the morning, there is a bit of hesitation i.e. it takes a while for the gears to shift and I feel the engine is exerting itself. Is this an early sign of some transmission problem or just a cold engine (garage parked). How do you know if have transmission problems?
  • mjtianmjtian Member Posts: 48
It usually improves if you let it warm up a little, say 2-5 minutes. Since I am parking my 2002 outside right now and it got really cold here in NJ last couple of weeks, I noticed it a little. I don't think it is a transmission problems though. When it is 5 degrees out in the morning, I think even a Maybach may hesitate a little.
  • gearhead10gearhead10 Member Posts: 84
I was considering trying the Mr. Clean system and am glad I read your post. I also make sure my car has a few layers of wax/sealant on it and based on the manufacturer's and your advice I think I'll pass on this product.

I learned on another board that when washing you should remove the spray nozzle from the hose for the final rinse and let the water sheet over the car instead of spray. Less water will remain on the surface making drying faster and reducing the chance of water spotting. Really works!
  • otis123otis123 Member Posts: 439
That makes sense - letting the water sheet over the car. I'll have to try it. Of course, nothing beats a good old chamee cloth...
  • sbcookesbcooke Member Posts: 2,297
Could just be cold behavior. It is fairly common to have different shifting behaviors built into transmission logic based on fluid temperature. I am not sure if I have erratic shifing in my 02 when cold, but I never notice it anyway because I expect such behavior.

For example, my Trooper has logic built into it that changes the shifting points based on fluid temp. It doesn't upshift all the way until you pass 37 MPH or normal operating temperature...just a feature of the GM 4l30e trans.
  • v-elementv-element Member Posts: 1
My 02' with 69,000 does this right at 20-40 mile/hour. Had Acura check it and they found nothing. The only thing they found was that the Transmission fluid was dark/dirty and need to be flushed. I was confused because I just bought this preowned certified and they didn't change out the fluid? Makes me wonder if I flush the transmission will I be opening up a new can of worms.

I have 2001 MDX, live in western PA, have the exact same problem, had heavy rains last week, and discovered over the weekend both driver and front passenger carpets were soaked dripping wet. I had rubber mats over them for the winter so I didn't notice till my wife set some papers on the floor. Called my dealer, service guy says it may be clogged sunroof drain tubes, quoted me $145 for 2hrs service to take it apart and check it out, said I could try to blow air through to clear, I will look at it tonight. Sounds like a design defect. Let me know if your problem gets fixed and what they say was wrong. Thanks
  • fcaofcao Member Posts: 31
My friend had his MDX scheduled oil change done in a local mechanics (not an Acura dealer). The local mechanics did the job correctly, but he couldn't reset the service interval indicator. Any simple trick to reset that? Or, is going to a dealer the only choice?

    Your advise will be appreciated.
  • fndlyfmrflyrfndlyfmrflyr Member Posts: 668
Your friend and the mechanic apparently didn't look in the owner's manual.

    My owners manual says:
    Key off
Press and hold select and reset buttons (rt side of inst cluster)
Key on for about 10 seconds until light resets

    Works for me.

I have 2004 MDX Touring w/Navi purchased last November. Here is a list of things that Acura should focus on changing and fixing.

    - Wind Noise from Roof Rack at speeds over 40 MPH (I can't believe I haven't seen more posts on this?) GM had this problem on their SUVs and the cure was moving the back rail forward. Can't do this on the MDX because the rails are in a fixed position.

    - Windshield fluid spray nozzle sprays too low.

    - Steering Wheel radio controls are too sensitive. A small unintentional touch changes the station or mode. (Same with Navi touch screen.)

    - The electric motor fan comes on all the time, even at first start up in the morning.

    - The infamous gas tank sloshing noise..very annoying and embarrassing for an Acura product. Sometimes I think I was rear ended by another car from the sound and feel of it. Several posts on this.

    - The "thud" when backing up from and applying the brakes. Many posts on this.

    - The passenger side rear seat, seat back latch is loose and causes a rattle noise when driving.

    - A whining noise comes from the engine upon acceleration from stop (around 20-35 MPH). This is another issue, however, have not seen any posts on this?

    - Both front seat arm rests feel a little loose when pulling on them to shut the doors. This seems like more of a design flaw than simply having the dealer tighten up a few screws.

    - External Temperature reads 3-5 degrees higher than actual (This is a Honda/Acura car issue as others have told me the same).

    - Inside and Outside window streak right by both outside side view mirrors after a car wash. I've read about this in one of the posts.

    - Illumination of outside headlamps not very good unless you also use the fog lamps too.

    - Plastic key fob is thin plastic and doesn't have a very durable feel. A $15K GM Sedan key fob is 10X more durable and more effective.

    - The clock is on the radio with the Navi option and is hard to read and blends in with the other station display numbers.

    - The Auto headlamp will turn on when passing under a small overpass. Again, GM products have a 5 second delay so it will not to turn the headlamps on prematurely.

    - There's no good spot to put your left foot when driving. The should be a dead pedal spot, and move the foot brake near there that looks like it was an afterthought and gets in the way often.

I shouldn't expect this from an Acura product, let alone a $40K+ vehicle from any manufacture.

I couldn't think of one thing I could list that I was unhappy about my 2000 Acura RL. Yes there are some nice things about the MDX but my overall grade for 4 months owning it is a C-.
  • mdgxmdgx Member Posts: 8
You should sell your car if you are so unhappy with it.
  • carfactcarfact Member Posts: 14
I don't know if I would call it unhappy, instead somewhat disatisfied. I'll address some of these items with the Acura Service department. I'm interested in seeing if any other owners observe these same issues.
  • mdgxmdgx Member Posts: 8
My point is you should be happy with a $40 purchase. I have a MDX and a GX. The GX is nicer (well it cost $10,000 more). But the GX has some small glitches, the MDX has perhaps more.

A Suburban (I have owned 6)has even more issues, but it'sless $$ and will require more repairs over it's life.

It just seems that you are looking for things not to like about your MDX, and I don't think you are ever going to be happy.

Instead of finding nits look at the great things that the MDX has (I assume that you have some positives in that you spent $40,000 for it)?
  • arbuarbu Member Posts: 3
The only problem I have had in common with your list is the brake noise after changing direction. There is a TSB on that complaint and after two attempts to comply with the fix, my dealer got the noise down to a very faint "click'.
Since this is the only car I have ever experienced this noise in, I feel the design should be better.
  • arbuarbu Member Posts: 3
I had the same intermittent problem with my navi voice command switch. My dealer, in consultation with Honda, discovered a software problem. It turns out that when you push the OK button after the 'lawyer-speak' disclaimer then shift into reverse and active the camera, the voice button is disabled. If you initially push the OK button and do not shift into reverse, the voice switch works normally. The dealer reprogrammed the nav system and it now works fine.
  • djdjdjdj Member Posts: 111
Got a 2004 MDX Touring last fall. Drives great. All our passengers have been very impressed with it. No gas sloshing noise, no creaking. Of course, after an ML320 anything will seem solid.

Recently the seat memory system stopped working. If you try to use the key fob it switches to the program mode and whatever button you hit resets.

Haven't had a reason to go to the dealer yet so this will be the first trip back and we'll see how accomodating the dealer is.

Has anyone else had this problem?
  • dsp888dsp888 Member Posts: 2
Posted in the generic MDX forum but worth asking here, does anyone know of a way to avoid having to "ok" the nav screen every time you start up. I hate to have this screen pop up after every stop for gas, coffee, etc. Often there is a software defeat built somewhere in the program if you know how to access it.
    Thanks
  • carfactcarfact Member Posts: 14
The purchase price for my '04 MDX Touring w/Navi was $37.3K. My point is that my '00 RL had a similar price four years ago and I couldn't find a list of "small things" that I didn't like. These are items you find on a car only after months driving it, and not during test drives.

I own an '05 Pontiac G6 and after two months of driving I don't have a "small things" list. And the G6 MSRP is 1/2 that of an MDX.

As I read thru these forums and I can share these items with others, it could help in their test driving and decision making. I may be more nit-picky than most, but it's why I've gone the foreign car market route. I will say that GM has turned things around in their quality and fit and finish department.
