Does anyone know if the wiring is in place to install rear speakers in the cab corner pillars in a base trim level 2000 standard cab 1500 Silverado?

Tonight I tried to replace the original AM/FM Stereo (which apparently only uses two speakers mounted in the doors) with a factory upgrade AM/FM Cassette used in the LS and LT models. It plugged in and turned on fine, but the fader has to be turned forward to hear sound. Couldn't get any sound from what looks like speaker grills in the cab corners behind my head!

Just thought I would ask before I tear the interior up tomorrow to find the answer myself!

How many wires are coming out of the connector
plug? GM is usually good about making 1 plug/
harness etc. to fit all combos of options etc.

Hi guys, been a while since I have been here. I know this has been discussed before but I can't find any info so here goes. I have a '01 2500HD Crew Cab 4x4 6.0/4:10. The accelerator pedal is getting to where it is hard to push sometimes. I remember seeing something about there being a two piece throttle something or other and the fix was to replace with a one piece. Ring any bells? Any information would be appreciated. If I have to take this to a dealer I want to know the answer before I ask the question if you know what I mean.

    Thanks

There was a tech bulletin about sticky throttle body valve and a fix while under warranty. If you are out of warranty the dealer will clean the throttle body or replace it at your expense.

Ryan, you had this done under warranty what was the bulletin anyway ?????

    Hi,
I am brand new to the board and am going to purchase a new truck within the next 2 weeks to a month. I am looking at the Silverado, the Tundra and Dodge Rams and Dakotas. I think i am more leaning toward the Silverado or the Tundra. Either truck would be extended cab, 4wd, v8 with a towing and off road package. Without getting into the great American versus [non-permissible content removed] truck debate, could anyone advise me as to any problems they are having with their Silverados or dealership issues? I am currently driving a 13 year old toyota 4wd that has never had any real service issues so long term realiabilty is a concern. Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated.

    thanks,
             Dan

I am trying to make up my mind myself. I am seriously considering a Z71 Silverado or a Tundra SR5 4X4. Z71 is attractive for me because of my GM credit card rebate plus the factory rebate. One problem is that it is difficult to find a Z71 without an electronic transfer case. I want the old reliable lever operated transfer case. And I do not want to pay for stupid options like leather power seats and mirrors with turn signal arrows in them. One issue that I read about seriously concerns me: What is this talk about piston slap in 4.8, 5.3, 6.0, and 8.1 liter engines? Is this common? Does it affect engine performance and durability? What are the symptoms and what fix has GM provided for this condition?

Toyota Tundra comes with an electronic transfer case standard, which annoys me. However, its V8 engine is very refined and quiet.

hey folks...just my 2 cents but my office employs both a Tundra SR5 and a Silverado LS. Both are extra cab 2WD versions with most of the goodies. Break down the truck purchase this way. If you work your truck..I mean tow, haul, off-road, move all your buddies, or haul your buddies to lunch then get the Chevy. Way more grunt down low (I don't care what the commercial says)and more comfortable interior, LOADS more extra cab space. If your the "Home Depot 10 bails of pine straw is a load" kinda guy and your friends actually drive now and again get the Toyota. Little better ride (tighter feel), About 2 mpg better than Chevy. The Chevy had 2 pretty serious electrical problems with the "brains" and sips a quart of oil between changes. No problems with the SR5. Both in the 38-40K range.

Sorry bout that post, im not the brightest bulb i admitt. But anyways...Does anyone else have this ride control option, or is my truck a freak???

I also wanted a manual transfer case - but "settled" for electronic on a 1999 Z-71. In hind sight the electronic one is better. I love the auto trac feature. I am considering upgrading my 1500 to a 2500HD, and wish it was available with an electronic transfer case.

I am not 100% sure about this but I have read that even the manual shift lever is not 100% manual. It too has electronic servo motors to fully engage 4x4.
  • sonjaabsonjaab Member Posts: 1,057
You are correct....The manual handle only engages the trans. case. The front hubs are elec./vac. controlled.
I have the auto-trac....It works great up here in the frozen north!...........geo

Has anyone who has experienced a wind noise, sounding more like a rattling noise on the passenger side near the windshield and pass. door had any success getting rid of it?
  • dch0300dch0300 Member Posts: 472
Might be the windshield molding. If so, it is a common problem for those with a bug guard installed. My 2001 does it in high wind conditions or at high speeds.
Here is a link to a fix, scroll down the page to see it...

Thanks for the link and info on the fix. I'll try it.

I had the front end shop even up the nose down look of my 01 silverado by adjusting the torsion bars, then they recommended that I cut about 3/4 of an inch off of the front bumper blocks for the lower control arms.
Sure enough the truck was resting right on them all the time and by removing some bumper foam/rubber with my miter saw a smoother ride was restored to the front end.

Someone asked for input on the Duramax engine and six speed a while back and got a single response, not by a driver, but by someone who referred him to another post somewhere else. I would like to ask the same question. Does anyone have any driving experience with a Duramax and six speed manual transmission that could give us some input on how they perform and last?

    I would appreciate hearing.

Has anyone had the service 4 X 4 light come on intermittantly? Some times every 100miles and sometimes for 600m.
  • kochurkochur Member Posts: 1
Every so often the radio/CD player will not work. I've noticed this occurs when the truck has been sitting for a brief period of time. And when I restart the truck everything else worlks but the radio/cd player. In order to "fix" this problem I have to disconnect the battery cable and everything is fine. But I want to know what causes this; has anyone experienced this sort of problem?

Is your truck a 2003? If so there is a service bulletin that covers it. Your dealer should be aware of the fix. I had this occur with my 2003 Silverado and it has not happened again since the dealer did a "reprogram."

Although I have not read all posts, I have learned a lot. I bought a Silverado 1500 LS 4X4 last weekend, I worried about regrets when I traded in my 1999 F250 Super Duty. So far I am happy, lots of new toys, and the autotrac kicks [non-permissible content removed]! I am not brand loyal, I love trucks... all of them! (I do get a laugh out of the folks that are so brand loyal they make themselves look like idiots) I hope I can contribute to this excellent topic! BTW...Edmunds spell-check is AWESOME!

edmunds has a spell check? When did that happen? cool! It works.

    bigfur,

My 1500 has the ZX3 suspension. Hope your shocks last a long time because they cost a small fortune to replace. Front $265 each. Rear $338 each and only from GMPartsDirect or a GM dealer. The shocks are GM specific and not offered by any aftermarket mfg. Would not get this option again. Amazingly, the option only cost me $400. I guess they new that I would really pay for it later.

I had been experiencing a clunking noise in my 2002 1500 - which had been incorrectly diagnosed by the dealership as the infamous start/stop/bump clunking noise. I convinced the service department to check the u-joints (suggested by some other edmunds users) - the u-joints in the driveshaft were bad and after they were replaced - the problem has been solved. Now I no longer have to trade in this truck and buy a Tundra.
If you are hearing noise from your transmission when starting/stopping or shifting gears - ask your mechanic to check the u-joints.

I had it a few times.....okay....a lot of times...would come and go...book says could lead to serious damage...what damage?....anyone know?.....it has gone away lately..so I don't think about it. For a while the change oil would flash at start up, then go back and forth between low fuel and service 4wd.....got annoying..so I filled up! I have a 2K 2500. I think I got a recall notice of some kind too a while back?...something minor.....or was that for the other car?......also have a cab air filter on the bench someplace?...hehe.....4 years and 72K miles.....how dirty can it be? - Porter

Have you ever had a problem with the button for the firm ride popping out without you pressing on it? mine does this ALL the time. its going back into the dealer soon for this...and a laundry list of other lil things...but i was curious if this was a common problem. Thanks to anyone who can help.

I have a 2003 silverado extended cab Z71. The rear doors seem to rub the rubber molding excessively when you are not driving on a smooth road. The squeaking/rubbing noise can be heard even with the radio on. It sounds almost like the doors or roof is buckeling. Anyone know of any causes/cures? Dealer said it is normal.
  • lwabirdslwabirds Member Posts: 4
I have a 2003 silverado Z71. I have had a heck of a time with the bumpers rusting! I have already had 2 front and one rear bumper put on. The front rust to the left and the right of the license plate (gaps). THe chrome starts to peel away. The back rusts on the bottom and on the inside on the corner of the bed. THe service manager told me that GM is aware of the problem and told them not to replace anymore. GM wants the dealer to take them off, sand the rust off and paint the back sides. The newest bumper on the front is now rusting. I wish I would have purchased a Tundra! Anyone else having troulbe with rusting bumpers??

I wanted to see if anyone knows of a cure for this problem. I have a 2003 silverado exteneded cab Z71. I can feel/sense a cracking feeling in the steering wheel while I am driving. I can't hear it but rather I "feel" it in the wheel. I took it to the dealer and they greased the steering column under the hood but it didn't fix the problem. Any help or suggestions?
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
Is it rusting on the inside or the front outside?? Mine front and back are rusted on the inside. Who sees it??? Only me when i go under the truck.

As far as the rear bumper is it rusting on the tailpipe side? This is the case with my 00 but it is only surface rust. I can take a wet rag and wipe it off easily

My wife purchased a 2003 Silverado 1500 Extended Cab (2W drive)a few days ago. On a smooth road the ride is just fine. On any irregularity, even at very slow speeds, there is a very noticeable shudder from the rear, as if the frame is not sufficiently rigid. Extremely irritating. Is this par for the course for this truck? I can't imagine everyone putting up with this. Haven't talked to the dealer yet, since we are planning on bringing it in in a day or two for some other minor problems as well.
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
try adding a little weight in the bed and trying it out then to see if it still does it
  • lwabirdslwabirds Member Posts: 4
The front bumper is rusting on the front. I can acutally peel the chrome off with my finger nails. The dealer said that chevy is aware of the problem. The memo said that the bumper maker stopped coating the back of the bumpers with a chemical and it is causing them to rust. I'm tired of replacing bumpers!
  • mr_mbunamr_mbuna Member Posts: 13
For someone purchasing a truck today, a Sierra, do you think you could force the dealer to do rust prevention coating free pre-delivery? Or is that unreasonable to expect and just keep an eye on it?

    Ben
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
Rust prevention is unecessary and it even states it will void the warranty because the frame is coated from the factory with a wax substance

I have a 2001 1500 LS Extended Cab Silverado. The front passenger side seat belt is giving me and my wife a terrible time. We have had it replaced twice at the dealership. The problem is that the supposed "child safety feature" on the seat belt locks the seat belt constantly while driving down the road. We will be cruising along smoothly and the seat belt will lock up requiring the passenger to remove the seatbelt and retract it all the way and put it back on. The other problem is sometimes you cannot even get the seatbelt out to put it on, even before you start the engine! It has gotten progressively worse since we bought it new 2 1/2 years ago. The service manager says this is "normal" and that is just the way Chevy built it. I say it may be the way Chevy built it but it is definitely not "normal". My father has a 1999 Silverado and my brother has a 2000 Silverado both 1500 extended cabs as well and neither one has this problem. I took my Dad for a ride a couple of weeks ago and he almost had a stroke from fighting with the darn seatbelt. I feel I am not being unreasonable by expecting the seatbelt not to lock up constantly, and by constantly I mean every 30 seconds, but the dealership won't do anything. They say there is nothing to fix. Has anybody else had this problem? My wife hates to ride in the truck and we have resorted to just remaining locked in the upright position like a race car driver.
  • mr_mbunamr_mbuna Member Posts: 13
ryanbab, I was actually referring to coating just the bumper area that is rusting. Sorry for the ambiguity. The dealer has offered to paint the backside of the bumper and offer a lifetime rust warranty on the component.

I bought a new 2002 Silverado 2500HD LT 4WD ext cab and began having problems on the drive home from the dealership. I had a occasional "grinding" noise
coming from the transfer case. A shift to 4WD and back cleared the noise. The dealer "couldn't re-create" the problem. Finally went completely out and had a new transfer case installed (3 weeks). Now (20,000 mi) there in a "clunking/clacking" sound when you start up, (like lifters or rods) until the oil pressure builds up. Again... "can't re-create the problem". Anyone had any similar experiences with this model (6 liter)? Thanks
  • dunlap2dunlap2 Member Posts: 1
My father-in-law has a 2002 Silverado with the 8100 engine which uses approximately 2 quarts of oil/3000mi oil change cycle. GM just tells him that the engine is supposed to burn oil. Has anyone else had this problem?
  • sonjaabsonjaab Member Posts: 1,057
Ask your dealer if it could be the PVC valve. GM has had a problem with them. I have seen many complaints here and elsewhere about high oil usage. The cause was the PVC valve. Dealers replace them with a newer style. Problem solved.........geo

I'd like to hear from owners of Chevy or GMC trucks with the 4.8 or 5.3 V-8s, built in the second half of the model year. This would be a December 2002 build date or later. The build date is on the white label on the driver's door.

I'd like to know how many miles you now have on your truck, and if you have experienced the piston slapping noise that GM was denying, but so many people were experiencing.

    Thanks in advance for responding.

    Folks,

    I own a '03 Silverado LS Z71 EXT 5300 SB truck ..

I purchased it in DEC '02 and now has 3500 miles on it .. I don't put alot of miles on it ..

My question: The oil change reminder has not come on yet ... is that normal ??? Does this mean I can wait before changing oil/filter/lube ??

What miles and months did you 'reminder' come on ?

    Thanks in advance!!!!
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
the oil reminder takes into account how you drive your truck (rpms, etc) so if you dont have alot of miles and dont drive it it probably wont come on for awhile. The only time my light has come on it came on at a 2600 mile interval. It was almost to 3 months in time since i changed prior
  • txyank1txyank1 Member Posts: 1,010
came on sooner than 4500 miles of normal driving. When I took a long trip it went 7600 miles.
