4L60E transmission won't engage in any gear

Yesterday while driving home I made it about 15 miles of stop and go highway driving, once I got off the highway and stopped at the first light I went to go and the truck acted like it had slipped into neutral. I finally got the tranny to reengage and limped it off the road. After that I could get the tranny to shift from park to R of D, but only for a little bit then it would drop back out. Fluid level was a little low (~1 qt) and I topped it off, and all linkages are ok. Any Suggestions?

    Has anyone hooked up a scanner? What are the codes?

    its not showing any check engine lights or anything like that, so I have not tried checking the codes yet because of that
