Correct Transmission Fluid

I just bought a 2008 Escape 3.0 with 90,000 miles a few weeks ago. It was pretty cheap because the transmission needed to be rebuilt. Why would the tranny go out at only 90,000 miles ?? Well, $1,850 later it is running great. I pulled the stick after driving 30 miles and the level just barely reaches the hatch marks. How much will it need to bring it up close to the full mark? I have an old half empty quart of Valvoline Max Life fluid that says Dexron III/ Mercon on it. Is this the correct fluid to use? The manual says use Mercon V only?

Wait! You should bring it back to whoever rebuilt it, to make sure there is no leakage. Let THEM add the fluid as well and then recommend to you which fluid to use in the future.
