I purchased my Sorento last year around October. My Sorento runs great. I love it. Of course, cars are made by human beings, so they are not perfect. The only perfection here is 10 years and 100,000 miles warranty. Sorento is an SUV. That means that it is a tough vehicle that will behave better than a car. Before I purchased my Sorento, I researched whatever the market offers on SUV's range $20k-$25k and I found that, there are no vehicle fully loaded and so beautiful as Sorento under $25k. My recommendation is, go for it! I read posting about transmission problems, vibrations, clicking, knocking, etc. The only problem I encountered was my rotors. They were replaced. End of story. My Sorento now is working without problems mechanically speaking. Go for it, DHEIRON!

Thanks hciaffa, dalancroft and ivygrnsorento. I will just have to get used to the clicking from the ducts.
Should I be concerned about what seems to be a weak 2nd gear synchro on my manual 2.5 diesel? Is it a warranty issue or is it common to this gearbox?
It is quite easy to crunch into second unless one pauses for a full second between depressing the clutch and selecting second.

segart...here in the states, we don't yet have the manual transmission. It will be available in 2004. So for now, most of us can't really give much insight with that issue. As far as warranty though, that would be covered I'm guessing. Unless the syncro has been abused. I will say this, it isnt going to get better, just worse. I would get that thing into the shop ASAP...you don't want to give Kia any reason not to replace or fix it becuase of negligence on your behalf.

dheiron...I bought my Sorento back in November. I now have over 26,000 miles on my Kia....as you can see, I drive it a lot! I've had it to Moab and did the White Rim Proper with it. I've driven it on a trail here in Colorado called Montazuma Revenge, not a trail for the weak willed. I've driven it in blizzards and did a 3800 mile road trip with it. I drive about 70 miles a day to work and back. AND....the only two major problems I've had were: replaced brake rotors, and a tire that was out of round that was replaced by the tire manufacturer. Minor fix to the drivers side airbag sensor that is located in the seat. Other than these issues, this thing has been great!

For the first 6 months, I'll admit, I was apprehensive about my decision of purchasing the Kia based on what most of us think about Kia. But now I know I made a solid choice with the Sorento, and I could not be happier!

Is it me or has anyone else noticed the amount of brake dust on the front wheels of their Sorentos's. they must use a 100% organic brake pad material as our Sorento front wheels really get dirty fast. I put some wax on them to make it easier to keep clean but boy they get dusty right away.
  • lok888lok888 Member Posts: 1,788
hciaffa - How often do you clean the wheels? I wash them at the same time when I wash the car on every weekend or two weeks the most. Without driving the car in the rain or snow for 2 weeks, the wheels (front) still clean. I would guess the wax on the wheels attract more dust on the road.

I've noticed a little bit of that but my mechanic said no big deal.

Do you have brake rotors replaced? Me too! Twice. How many others out there with the same problem? I noticed after my brake rotors were replaced that my Sorento behave different. At 80mph, before, the ride was terrible even with my wheels balanced today. Now rides perfect. No vibrations (Tire pressure 30psi cold). Do not ask me how, but it is happening. By the way, my dealership is taking care of my rear door corrosion (Door handle), so I will keep you all up to date.

For the past month I have seen a small (quarter coin-sized) oil puddle under my Sorento. It didn't occur every day, but often enough. When I put paper underneath the engine, it was obvious that the oil was leaking from the driver's side. Long story short, the dealer diagnosed the leak as coming from the A/C compressor. They replaced it with a new one and all is right with the world. BTW- some naysayers may view this as poor KIA quality, but they should know that all car manufacturers purchase their compressors from outside supplies- Sankyo and Sanden are most common. They can be found on high end vehicles as well as KIA and Hyundai.
  • ivygrnsorentoivygrnsorento Member Posts: 119
Yep, I had all 4 rotors, pads, and calipers replaced. I didn't really realize how bad the breaks had deteriated until I drove my Sorento with the new ones installed. WOW!

Also...I am having all four of my door handles replaced this week because the paint is chipping off around the edges. My only concern is the paint shop matching my paint color correctly.
  • segartsegart Member Posts: 5
Just an update on this. I took the car to my dealer to have the slight crunching on 2nd and 3rd investigated. It is having it's gearbox pulled apart next week; I will update this forum on exactly what is found, and the cure. KIA UK have decided not to replace the box, but repair it, on my 6 month old 4000 mile example. I would prefer a new box but we will see how it pans out.

I just checked the NHTSA website and found some items are on the TSB board like Sorento EX Steering Feel (light steering feel at high speeds) and rattle noise from the jack compartment (need a larger jack support protector pad). The NHTSA didn't provide any VINs for the vehicles. They just gave out the production date. I understand that the car manufacturers have no obligation to contact the owner for the TSBs but the recalls. Isn't it true that they (the dealers) will only look at the TSB items if the owner is experience the problems or complaints? Then the dealer will repair it at no charge within the warranty period.
  • dekesterdekester Member Posts: 322
IIRC, when the vehicle is on for service, the techs should perform the updates. At least that's how GM service departments do it.

Reading the Chevy TrailBlazer/GMC Envoy board, it lookd more like they wait until the customer complains. They've had at least two software upgrades for the transmission and engine computer....

And people wonder why I won't buy another domestic brand vehicle again.

If it helps you might like to know that even my RX300 has a similar noise. Hard to notice if you have the radio on but I was a bit surprised. From what I read here it appears to be a fairly common "feature"
  • lilac0422lilac0422 Member Posts: 51
Sometimes manufacturers send notices for TSB's. As was the case with the hood anti corrosion. Many believed that was a recall. But according the the NHTSA, it was only a TSB and not a recall. There have not been any recalls on the Sorento.

If you wanted to, you could probably go into your dealer and ask them to look at your Sorento and make sure that all of the TSB's have been taken care of. If they even apply to your vehicle.
  • lok888lok888 Member Posts: 1,788
Yes. The hood anti corrosion wax application is on the TSB database of the NHTSA. The recall usually involves any safety issue of the vehicle. Luckily, there is only one recall on only one of the 2003 Kia model, a programing error in the ABS unit on some 3300 Sedonas. Compare to those recalls and TSBs on 2002-2003 Toyota Camry (I bought one of those but luckily without any problems), Kia is a promising auto maker.

    Hi,

Would any LX owner check this for me ? When any door is open, does the MAP lights turn on ?

For my LX, only the light int the middle and the one in the trunk turn on when I open the door.

    Thanks.
    Benjamin
  • lok888lok888 Member Posts: 1,788
My EX does the same thing. I am sure there is not different in term of the lighting. I don't know why. You can turn on all lights with the main light switch (next to the cruise control switch). But the key must be at "ON" position in the ignition switch. BTW, it has the same thing on my 03 Camry. So I guess this is what they really mean "the map lights". You can't turn it on just by open the doors.
  • benjamin_ngbenjamin_ng Member Posts: 12
lok888. Thanks for reply. Interesting, my 03 Honda Pilot would turn on the Map lights when I open any door. This makes the inside really bright and I like it. Oh well. Thanks again.
  • lok888lok888 Member Posts: 1,788
benjamin_ng - I wish they can re-program the map lights on the Sorento. I found this is inconvenience when I want to get something in the front (like the glove box) in the dark.

Anyone hear a squeaking noise from the front end when hitting the speed bump? At least it was on my Sorento. But it was gone when I have the tires rotated and balanced yesterday. No other major problem at 10500 miles except they will look at the sunroof rattle issue.
  • hciaffahciaffa Member Posts: 454
that vibration could be what most of the Sorento owners have noticed upon delivery of the vehicle. Most of the time the air pressure in the tires are set for about 40-50 lbs. psi. way over the limit I believe the recommended pressure is 30 I keep mine at about 10% over at 33 for highway driving and no problems. Check out you tires and this could be the problem.
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
Most vehicles, especially those shipped from over seas, will have very high pressures in the tires from the factory, which 95% of the dealers forget to air-down at delivery. They keep em higher pressure so that the tires don't get flat spotted while sitting on dealer/factory lots.

I'M HAVING SOUNDS LIKE THE SAME CONCERN WITH A VIBRATION WITH MINE. NO IT IS NOT TIRE PSI, THIS VIBRATION IS FROM THE ENGINE OR TRANS AROUND 60MPH OR AT 2500RPMS, (IN OR OUT OF GEAR.) THE SECOND KIA DEALER ARE STUMPED AS WELL, THEY SAID THEY HAD A KIA REP INVOLVED, IS BEEN A WEEK WITH NO CALL BACK!! VERY IRRITATING TO DRIVE!!!
  • segartsegart Member Posts: 5
Just to put this on file for reference. I have had my manual gearbox, which had a weak 2nd and 3rd gear synchro, replaced by the dealer. Kia were reluctant to sanction the 'boxes total replacement, prefering to have the unit rebuilt. Because certain parts required were not immediatly available they did authorise the fitting of a new gearbox.
The new unit is smoother than the old but at best it is a clunky action, and you can beat the synchro, especially going from first to second.
Overall I am quite happy with the Kia warranty srevice, and my dealer scored well in arranging the warranty claim efficiently, supplying a loan car, etc.
    Cheers

    @ silverex:
Have your techs check the shafts of the drive train for concentrations of UNDERSEAL.
It happened on several European Sorentos that liquid underseal ran to the bottom of the shafts where it then got hard. That caused vibrations at certain speeds, independent of the gear engaged or engine rpm.
Removal of the excess underseal from the shafts cured it.
If you went through mud, another possibility might be clusters of mud and stones on the inside of your rims.

    Cheers

Has anobody notice their front grill. I was washing my Sorento and I noticed some silvery specks on the black grill part. It seems that KIA took a plastic chromed grill and painted it black, leaving the outer trim and logo chroI wonder what vcan be sone me. So now the stones being thrown up in trafic hit the grill chipping the black paint. Nest time it's in for service I'll bring it up with the service manager.
  • lok888lok888 Member Posts: 1,788
I have check mine because I remember seeing something that you describe I haven't washed my car for about two weeks. I guess it wasn't a big issue (front grill paint) to me and I ignored it.

Indeed, I noticed the engine temparture gauge is usually high... above the mid-level for normal driving condition and something as high as nearly the "H" mark on the gauge. I suspect a faulty thermometer. I saw no sign of engine overheat with working radiator fan.

Also, for the A/C condensation, I have to bring back this issue because the water dripping isn't only occur after the use of A/C, even without the use of A/C. I have bring a list of the problems to my dealer.

hey hciaffa, I had the same problem. Mine actually got severly chipped after a long winter here in colorado. Nothing like sanded highways to chip the heck out of that grill. I have brought it up with my pervious service department and they said in Colorado it is to be expected. My current service department has replaced my grill with a new one...though I expect this will be an ongoing problem with the chipping. I'm not sure why Kia paints the chrome...I've noticed this same technique on other Kia vehicles as well. I've seen a lot of Kia Sedona's in parking lots with severe chipping on their grills. I'm thinking about purchasing a third party grill from tomato.co in hopes of avoiding this problem.

I bought a new white/gray EX 2 weeks ago. Saturday after washing it I discovered some random tiny rust spots oh the hood, upper part of the 4 doors and front and rear fenders (upper part too). My dealer says that was caused by acid rain and that white cars where very sensitive to that. They offered to buffer it off for me free of charge. Is this really normal? I have never seen this so I am not sure what the dealer is saying is 100% accurate. Should I let them buffer it? Should I claim warranty? I do not live/work near any industry, etc. Thanks in advance.
  • bigfurbigfur Member Posts: 649
acid rain. Odds are its RAIL DUST from being shipped on the railroad. Ask the deal or odds are do it yourself, and use a automotive clay bar and clay the truck and i can almost garante it will come off.

I have a whistleing wind noise starting at aprox 55 mph It is dificult to tell where it is coming from does anyone else have the same problen? The dealre said that it was coming from the roof rack. I have moved it back and forth and its still there.

I just picked up my Sorento after a day in service for the inaccurate engine temperature reading. It turns out the anti-freezing coolant reservoir was leaking. It was a defect. I noticed the needle on engine temperature gauge was at 3/4 and sometime rose at near "H" about a week ago during normal driving condition. I had no heat and A/C. Again, my service people gave me a rental, an 03 Kia Spectra.

hciaffa - Remember I was talking about the air conditioner condensation? The unusal water dripping turned out an anti-freezing coolant. But I still question about that because it was clear like water and it was only after the engine was shut off. I first thought it was a faulty thermostats.
  • netcamnetcam Member Posts: 30
    lok888,

As of today, I too have a question regarding the A/C condensation.
I have had my Sorento (LX, manual A/C) for three weeks now and it has been running just fine. However, this weekend for the first time, I noticed the water dripping and puddling underneath the passenger side. At first, I attributed it to water draining from washing the vehicle, which had been the last thing done just before heading home and seeing this for the first time. Subsequent driving around on the weekend, I continued to notice the dripping and puddling after parking wherever I stopped to shop. So I investigated further, and my non-technical findings were:

The dripping liquid is absolutley water, not coolant of any kind. It is clear and cool, exactly what you would expect to be condensing off of the a/c compressor. Looking in the engine compartment, the water runs out of a small tube on the passenger side firewall and drips on the ground from the engine compartment/firewall base.

I expect this would be a normal result with the air conditoner on and this is in fact stated in my Sorento manual. However, I am noticing this occurring without using the a/c in the vehicle! So I am not using the air conditioning and the a/c compressor appears to be on or running all of the time. This I find to be unusual because my previous vehicle (Nissan Pathfinder) had manual a/c and the condensation only occurred after using the air conditioner.

Also with my Pathfinder, I could immediately hear the compressor kick in when I turned on the air conditioning. In testing for this with the Sorento, I cannot detect any sound difference in engine or compressor when turning the a/c on. But .... there is something else with my Sorento that may be tied into this. From day-one of picking up my Sorento I immediately noted that everytime I start the engine and start driving, there is a 'kick' or slight tug accompanied by a bit of noise after I've moved about 15 feet. I have always thought this a bit odd but normal since it happens everytime. I also thought it was a power steering lag of some kind since you can feel it through the steering wheel and I usually back up a bit and make a full left turn to exit my driveway. I'm now convinced that this is the a/c compressor kicking in, even though my a/c is off. I'm still a bit perplexed though, because with the fan on and temperature knob turned to full cold, fairly cold air will come out but when I do turn on the a/c via the button, the air coming out the vents does become cooler but not significantly so. This was tested on the highway at 65mph so I'm not totally sure the cool air from the vents without the a/c on is being cooled at least partially by passing thru the compressor, but that is what I think.

I'm now questioning whether this is normal operating for Kia vehicles and/or the Sorento. Does anyone else notice this or know if the a/c compressor should be operating at least nominally all the time the engine is on?? Or is it occurring and noticeable because it is a brand new vehicle with fresh refrigerant in the compressor.
My manual also has a few driving tips, one of which says to help on fuel economy and engine load, is not to use the a/c if it not required, so I'm thinking the compressor should be off when the a/c is not on.
Other than this, mechanically this vehicle has been running like a Swiss watch! It is so quiet at idle, I almost forget the engine is running. And it runs extremely well at highway speeds too.

I guess I'm going to call my dealer and ask about this. It will be winter soon where I am with temperatures below zero (0 C) all day/every day (northern Alberta) and this condensation could start to freeze in and around the compressor area and cause other problems.
  • hciaffahciaffa Member Posts: 454
Question... is your defroster set to be on or in any other defroster mode if so your A/C will be running. As in most designs they have made the A/C kick on when in any defroster mode and if it is on and its cool outside the evaporator will be dispending water down the tube. If its not on then have the service people check it out. I know in our Sorento we can barely hear the compressor kick on or even hear it for that matter. Now on the shutter feeling, is this happening when you have come to a stop and start off again and feel like a thump in the driveline. If so many of us have felt this and most of the thinking is that it is ralated to the differential. Some people have had the transaxle repaired and have the sensation still there. Just bring it up to your service people so it is noted. Our service people can't find anything out of whack and not to many owners have complained about it. On the power steering fault if you are feeling a lag there is a TSB on this that the dealer can perform in reprogramming the computer for this. Hope this helps.
  • lok888lok888 Member Posts: 1,788
netcam - I noticed it was unusal by looking under the car and saw a huge amount of water dripping after each use of A/C and even without using the A/C. I first thought the A/C was so efficient. Yes. It looked water to me and not anti-freezing coolant. The only reason that I went to the service was the engine temparture gauge. It was unusual high. Otherwise they wouldn't figured out the problem with the anti-freezing coolant bottle or connecting hose. BTW, I did check the reservoir level and it looked fine before the repair. Still don't know why it was leaking. Can't imagine if the anti-freezing coolant runs dry.
  • hciaffahciaffa Member Posts: 454
I still can't understand that the fluid was clear and it was water and yet they told you it was the anti-freeze recovery bottle and hose that was bad. Usually if the coolant is leaking it would be colored yellow, green, blue depending on manufacturer. And if it was coming out of the drip tube how could it relate to the coolant. I don't doubt you but there must be a reason why your dripping water but your anti freeze is low and the temp gauge is running hot. I would have your oil checked and make sure there is no coolant in it or check your radiator for oil it could be a bad head gasket. I had this problem on my Forester about 6 months after we bought it.
  • lok888lok888 Member Posts: 1,788
I am not aware of the anti freeze level before the repair. So I couldn't tell whether the anti freeze was low and being leaked. After the repair, I can see the anti freeze (green) at near max level with a new and clear bottle. And the problem disappeared. Again, I didn't see any anti freeze dripping but water before the repair. Do you think there may be a different anti-freeze with clear color or maybe it was diluted (50/50) with water?
  • netcamnetcam Member Posts: 30
I called up the dealership and spoke to a service rep today about this and what their opinion was.
With respect to the a/c compressor being on and the resulting water dripping/puddling even when the a/c button is not on, I was told that this is normal and as you have stated above, that if any of the defrost vent settings are on, then the a/c compressor will turn on. Apparently other customers have questioned this and in order not to confuse people with automatically turning the a/c light on if the compressor is running when it has not been technically engaged by the driver, Kia doesn't have the a/c button light up as indicating 'on' unless it is actualy depressed. If so, this could be clarified with a proper explanation in the manual.

As far as the 'kick' or slight tug that I mentioned feels like the compressor engaging, I was informed that this is also normal and it is part of the antilock brake (ABS) system self diagnostic test which occurs every time the vehicle is started. I am aware of the 'thump' associated with the differential/driveline that others have mentioned here and what I experience is not that. This little kick only occurs upon engine startup and after moving no more than 15 ft, then disappears immediately. It does not re-occur at anytime while driving in any conditions after that until the engine is shut down and restarted again. So for now, this explanation seems reasonable to me when I think about it though it too is also not mentioned in my manual. However, I will check that TSB warning on the power steering just to make sure it could not be that.
Everytime that I test drove a Sorento at my dealership, the salesperson always started the vehicle and brought it up to the showroom doors, and they also had a policy of driving the vehicle off the lot and down the road for a bit, to explain some features and get away from a heavy traffic area. So I never experienced this ABS system check until I drove mine off the lot and it was never explained to me that it occurs. I will be informing the dealership further on this and Kia Canada through customer surveys that I have just received.

I have not owned a vehicle with full ABS before or a new one for that matter, so I guess there has been a lot of technological advances with vehicle systems, including air conditioning!
I will report back if I hear of anything further. Thanks for your opinions.
  • lok888lok888 Member Posts: 1,788
I started to learn things differently since I bought a Kia. I owned and drove several cars (Honda, Toyota, GMC & more) with A/C and ABS for the last 12 years. I have no experience of water dripping when the A/C was not in use. The A/C was not turn on automatically when defrost vent was on at least on these cars. About the ABS, my Accord (car sold) has no such "kick" noise when the car start to move. BTW, I do have the "kick" sound on my Sorento. They are all saying the ABS is doing a self test. I think the ABS self check occurs everytime you start the engine and drive the car.

When I drove the dealer's rental while my Sorento was in service, the A/C was also turn on (A/C light was on) when I had the defrost vent on this 03 Spectra. So this is probably a common thing on cars with A/C these days. Also, all Kia (maybe Hyundai as well) vehicles that I drove have no seat belt reminder light or tone.
  • PlacemanPlaceman Member Posts: 44
I thought I read that the kick sound was the charging of the power steering.

During the past couple of days I have paid some extra attention to this when driving around town, listening with the window down after engine startup. There is the very brief mechanical lag sound coming from the lower engine area or the front brakes vicinity. Afterwards my Sorento performs flawlessly in every way mechanically, so I no longer consider this to be any type of problem.
I reviewed the TSB warnings and for those items listed, including power steering, they all apply to earlier production Sorento's manufactured back in 2002.
  • lok888lok888 Member Posts: 1,788
The absent of the seat belt reminder light and tone must be new at least on Kia vehicles after '00 model. I drove a '01 Sephia and '03 Spectra (and my '03 Sorento) with no such feature. I wonder there is one on '01 Sportage.

About the kick sound, it happens only once everytime I start the engine, engage the drive mode and when the car first move within the first few feet.

TBS - I only found few TBSs from NHTSA website including the anti-corrison wax application on the hood, power steering (light at highway speed) and rattle from the tools compartment. Few Sorentos involved with manufacture date prior to October, 2002.
  • brooklyn1951brooklyn1951 Member Posts: 71
My '94 Jeep GC had the same symptoms immediately after startup and driving less tha 50 feet. This was verified in the service manual and by the dealer as the ABS self-test. The ABS computer cycles the solenoid valves that release (unlock) each wheel during ABS function. This is to test ABS integrity and will set a malfunction indicator light (MIL) on the instrument panel should a valve not function.
BTW, IIRC, the Sorento service schedule makes no mention of a regular brake fluid change- something that I consider essential given the propensity of fluid to absorb moisture. Any speck of rust on those ABS valves could cause expensive problems. Due to the nature of the Sorento ABS system, it appears that you must use the Kia/Hyundai scan tool to cycle the ABS for a complete fluid flush and replacement. I guess I will have to see the dealer for this one (in about a year).

Has anyone with an 03 Sorento noticed an issue with the transmission shifting slowly from 2nd to 3rd, and again slowly from 3rd into 4th? Dealership says its normal, but I'm not sure I agree. Comments?
  • lok888lok888 Member Posts: 1,788
I don't notice any different. But I have read some early posts about the acceleration hesitation. I don't know if it is a problem or just the way the transmission performs. No TSB found on this.
  • ivygrnsorentoivygrnsorento Member Posts: 119
My Sorento is fast approaching the 29,000 mile marker, and I can say that at about the 20,000 mile marker, my sorento started shifting faster. I think its just a transmission break-in issue. How many miles do you have on your Sorento sedonasorento? When my Sorento was new, I had the same feeling about my transmissions shifting quality. It seemed a bit sluggish. But I can say that I no longer have that problems. It shifts nice and crisply when I need it to. Hope this information helped some.

Just purchased a 04 Sorento LX. I had a remote starter installed for winter ! The dealer kept he two keys that normally comes with the truck so I asked for them back! He did not object. He seemed surprised at my request for getting what I paid for ????

Dealer said not to loose the colored master key cause that can't reproduce other keys without the master key so be careful !

IF you loose the master keys looks like the dealer will need to replace the whole lock assembly to give out a new keys & code. These keys apparently contain a chip which reacts to a transponder scan to start the engine!

Also, the book says you can start the car with a manual override if the key chip codes or transponder fails. The dash display always flashes the word IMMO 6 times when starting. IF it stays lit you must override it by turning the starter key according to a sequenced 4 digit password only the dealer knows for each car's VIN number. If you don't have that secret code and you have key problems it will be tow truck time !
    I guess IMMO mean IMMO...bilize!

When I called my dealer the maintanance manager had to read the book because nobody ever asked him for the secret code! I hope to have an answer tomorrow !

Better read you instruction manual just in case.

So far.... gas milage sucks... sucks gas a lot
