Sooch, I visited the local dealership this weekend. They had a Sport Trac with the cloth comfort group and the rear head rests were adjustable (up and down). I think I will order mine next Saturday.

Don't let the price fool you.You should be able to
get the basic vehicle which is well equipped for under $21,500 if you order it from the factory.
Having looked at both the Nissan and Sport Trac
I would choose the Sport Trac.It has more room and
power. The only thing the Nissan has in it's favor
is a longer powertrain warranty. As far as the Dakota goes I think it's too big and thirsty.I presently have 98 Explorer Sport loaded and it's
been trouble free for 23000 miles and if they
would have had the Sport Trac 2 years ago I would
have gotten one.I will wait till next year and also see what gas prices do.I usually have to
fill up my tank at just over 200 miles.Which is a
    pain.

    Hi ALL<
Thanks for all who have contributed useful info. I ordered my Sport Trac today. After I did so, the dealer called me back to make sure that I wanted Harvest Gold with Tan leather. He said that he was concerned that the "platinum" body side molding and step bars might not look good with gold. It looks ok to me in the catalogue, but if anybody has seen one and it looks butt-ugly, how about letting me know. I guess my feeling is that black and white would be the safest choices for good looks, but I live on a dirt road, and don't want to be a slave to my car. Any opinions would be appreciated, Joe

just saw the harvest gold sport trac at the cleveland auto show and it looks great! my wife and i both love it. plenty of metallic in the paint so it really sparkles! the side molding and step bars complement the harvest gold very well. don't worry about it, great choice, i don't think you'll be sorry.

I remember hearing that the standard seating surface was one for "active users." Meaning outdoor activities that can get the interior dirty with dirt, water, snow, etc. It seems like this would be similar to the Nissan Xterra's seating material, like a Gor-Tex. Easy to wash off and such. If any of you have seen this material in the Sport Trac would you please let me know and tell me how you think it is. I appreciate it.

Hi I too am in Ca..and any detailed info you can give me would be appreciated. In the past I have walked in to a dealership and thrown my wallet at them...LOL NOT this time! Thanks Geepsy I am planning on a purchase at the end of this month either in Northern ca or southern Ca...
  • zack1000zack1000 Member Posts: 84
The seating surface in the Sport Trac are regular surfaces---either cloth or leather.

The floor however is a rubber-type surface and meant to be cleaned easily if it gets muddied up.

I am confused as to what invoice is..when I went to our local dealer they printed out 2 " NOT invoices" for me which showed all the order details to the dealer...the 4wd was 29,000 and the 2wd total was near 25,000. Can I ask what you paid? and what options you opted for as well as a waiting time? I will be down in Barstow later this month so I will definitly be in the area..: ) Oh yes..I noticed that the brochure says "captains" chair is standard but fails to use the word captain to describe seats in the other groups of options. Did you happen to see "leather trimmed" group? Was it all leather like the picture or "trimmed" like the description? I really appreciate all assistance..are you enjoying it? Geepsy

Is that total final price including taxes and destination fees?
  • myers77myers77 Member Posts: 7
that did include destination fees and everything at the dealership, but i leased, so i did not have to pay the taxes... but if you do intend to buy, expect over 1600.00 in taxes at the license bureau. i only leased just incase the vehicle may have been a lemon or didnt meet its expectations, but i do plan on purchasing in a year if all goes well.

I plan on ordering a 4x4 by the end of this month, but I would like to locate a cap frist.Does anyone have any information on availability.

My wife and I just drove the sport trac with the standard seats. They had the stain/water repellent material, no adjustable headrests and relatively little lumbar support. My wife complained that after about 20 minutes her legs were going to sleep because of the "fit" of the seat. I was uncomfortable as well and did not like the seating material. This is disappointing because overall I really liked the truck. Can anyone tell me about the difference in comfort with the other seating options?

I SAW A GOLD WITH TAN LEATHER SPORT, 2001, IT WAS GORGEOUS, I NORMALLY WOULD HATE THAT COMBO BUT IT WAS VERY SWEET

I'm considering the Sport Trac and was wondering if anyone knew how easily removable the tonneau cover is. I know it's foldable, but I'm concerned that if you want to put something taller in there that the tonneau would look awkward folded up. I think I want to get the tonneau b/c of weather with taking 4 people and luggage. I think I'd get 4 x 4 loaded, but was wondering what everyone else thought. The dealer here (Lincoln, NE) has a base 4x2 that didn't really impress me, but the leather pictures I've seen look much classier. Also, those who have taken possession, how does the stereo sound? I just hope I won't wish I just had a full-size Explorer b/c of the enclosed cargo area. I'm still not sure this truck is for me. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
  • bennbbennb Member Posts: 143
I guess what I'm asking is does the tonneau fold up nicely when you want something taller in the truck bed?
  • wpoewpoe Member Posts: 41
I just ordered my Sport Trac on Saturday. I ordered the cloth package, the performance package, comfort package, the moonroof, the cargo cage, the 6 disk CD play. I also tried to order the Tonneau cover but it is still not available.

I believe that the Tonneau connects to the truck bed with just a few bolts.
  • wpoewpoe Member Posts: 41
The cargo cage bolts on with a few bolts, I am not sure how the cover is connected.

Does anyone know what the best way to find out the status of an truck order other than calling your sales person every few days. This is the part where I get a little impatient.
  • bennbbennb Member Posts: 143
Thanks I appreciate the info. I talked to a dealer today and they said that it'd be best to order one without the tonneau b/c of the wait on them and then put it on later when they become available. Does anyone know what the comfort package includes?
  • taz791taz791 Member Posts: 6
This is in response to LLOOMIS question about
the seating. (1) There is a Cloth Comfort Group--
which is the cloth bucket seats, 6-way power driver's seat overhead console with outside temperature and compass. (2) Also Leather Comfort
    Group---- Leather-trimmed Bucket seats, 6-way
power drivers's seat, Floor console with rear
climate and audio controls, overhead console
    with outside temperature and compass.
The Cloth Comfort Group MSRP is $935.
The Leather Comfort Group MSRP is $1,495.

    I have a order in for a 4x2 Sport Trac (2-16-00)
the dealer called me on Friday and said the
Hard Tonneau Cover, will not be Available until
April 10. She placed a call to Ford, and was told
I could wait on the Tonneau Cover, but my truck
would be built from that date (April 10) which
means I will have to wait 6-8 weeks.
The only other option is to go ahead and build
the truck since I only have 4 weeks or less to
wait now. And when the Tonneau cover comes out
April 10, to order one and the dealership will
install. The Tonneau cover MSRP is $590. I was
told since I will be ordering one from the dealership it will cost more since they have to install it. Oh well!!!
The Tonneau Cover bolts down no drilling you
can take this off when you haul large objects
    like bikes..etc.
    Hope this helps everyone!!
  • bennbbennb Member Posts: 143
Thanks for the info Taz791--it really helped! I'm not sure if I want to wait for the tonneau to come out or not. Even though they say April 10th, it'll probably be later than that from past experiences.
  • myers77myers77 Member Posts: 7
i have the bucket seats in my sport trac and love them!! i did not get the leather only because this is my work vehicle, but think they are just as comfortable as leather.
  • bennbbennb Member Posts: 143
I was wondering if anyone who has taken possession of a Sport Trac could tell me how big it feels to drive. If possible compare it to other cars. I'm curious b/c it'd be the longest car I've owned. I had an 4 door Explorer and I think that was about 17" shorter than the Sport Trac so I'm a little concerned.

I went to my local Ford dealer with e-mail from this forum and said I want to order a Sport Trac and am willing to pay 3% over invoice (cash deal,no trade in). They agreed but said they will not order it specifically for me; however, I would have right of 1st refusal on arrival, and they won't know invoice price until it arrives. This seems like a crazy way to do business. In essence neither one of us (ie, dealer nor I) have any obligation to one another. Downside to me is I could wait 6-8 weeks for my truck only for them to say invoice is higher than currently indicated by Edmunds.com. I would prefer to find a dealer who will give me a firm price and take my deposit. Has anyone else had to deal in this manner or has everybody gotten a firm price in writing on ordered vehicles? Autobytel and Carpoint are no help as they both refer me to same dealer that I received the vague offer from. I live in Knoxville,TN and would be willing to drive 3-4 hours for reasonable deal.I appreciate any help.

my wife test drove it yesterday and i asked her this exact question. she is only 5'2" and she really liked the way it drove, very smooth. her car is a volkswagen eurovan, which is long in the back, short in the front. the sport trac has a longer front that her van, but doesn't seem as long in the back as her van does. she did not feel it was too big at all.
  • pbanko7pbanko7 Member Posts: 17
the only pictures i have seen of the tonneau cover all show it as black. i would have thought the tonneau cover would match the body color of the sport trac. anybody know anything about tonneau colors? thanks.
  • kytynkytyn Member Posts: 1
What are the milage ratings for the Sport Trac? They're not listed under 'Fuel Data' on Edmunds...
  • bennbbennb Member Posts: 143
Mpg are similar to the Explorer--16mpg city, 20mpg highway. All the tonneaus are black. jimsteele43569--THANKS for the info of the tonneaus! It was very, very helpful! This forum is great!
  • bennbbennb Member Posts: 143
Anyone know what the option "Payload Package #2" consists of? Is that just a tow package or is a hitch included on the Sport Trac? Is the hitch lower than the bumper or do they just have a spot for a ball on the bumper?
  • wpoewpoe Member Posts: 41
I talked with several Dealerships by E-mail here in Atlanta about purchasing a Sport Trac. One was very helpful and said they would sell one for $1,000 over invoice. Another said they would sell it to me for MSRP. I had troubles with still another one that said they would order me a Sport Trac, just the way I wanted but they did have enough allocations to get it with the Premium Package. Finally, I found one that was a big dealer and would order it for me.

Once the Dealer entered the order into the computer, she printed the order which had the Dealer Invoice and Retail price on it. It matched Edmunds all except the Power moonroof. It was $1 cheaper.

    Hope this helps.

Ordered a Sport Trac and was told that Estate Green was not yet available from factory. Anyone out there able to confirm this and if true how soon will that color be available?
  • zack1000zack1000 Member Posts: 84
To anyone who has a sport trac currently--does it come with a security system standard?

I can't find any info about one in the specs but I don't see an option for one either.
  • bennbbennb Member Posts: 143
For some reason I'm thinking that it does. If it's like any of the other Theft Systems of Explorers of the past it's a passive one--meaning the only way the alarm goes off is if the doors are unlocked without use of the key or FOB and then a door is opened. To test this roll the windows down and then lock the door and close it and wait a bit. After a while unlock the doors with the unlock button inside by reaching in, then open the door from the outside. If like the past Explorers the alarm will probably go off.

Does anyone have any comments on the colors of Sport Tracs they've seen? I'm thinking either the black or Deep Wedgewood Blue.
  • wpoewpoe Member Posts: 41
I have seen the Deep Wedgewood Blue, Black, white, Red, and the Gold (Harvest Gold I believe).

I liked the Gold or the Black the best. The Deep Wedgewood Blue looked purple when the sun was shining.

I saw a sport trac today for the first time. It had the cloth comfort group, convience package, and prem. sport group. It was in the flavor of torreador red. It was an awesome looking truck, it did not have the tonneau cover, but got a good look at the bed, it seemed to be quite sturdy. Where did i see it? Well i saw it at Gibbons Ford in Dickson City, PA in case anyone is wondering. I have always been frustrated when everyone else was saying that they saw it but never said where, so i thought i would clue everyone in. The msrp on the sticker was $28795 which is right in line with what edmunds puts here. The cloth seats seemed to be the water resistant/stain resistant type. It was nighttime so I could not get a great look at it going back tommorow, may even buy it who knows. Thanks for all who have posted info on this message board it has been a huge help!!!!

I picked up my white Sport Trac just over a week ago and have been very happy with it. I'm leasing it as a business vehicle and the dealer would not budge from MRSP. The "lease factor" is not great, but the payments come out of my income pre-tax. The truck did not have one of the cargo cages (does have everything else except the multi CD changer...leather, moonroof, etc.), but I did get the dealer to pay for half of the cost of ordering the cargo cage (approx $150 for half).
Anyway, the truck is fun to drive, can hold all five members of my family (including one in a car seat) and gives me the cargo flexibility my car and our Pontiac Montana does not. (Anyone need a '97 Olds Cutlass Supreme??)

my st has a theft deterent system, im not quite sure if you call it an alarm or what. i havent had the alarm go off yet. but yes, they do come with a theft deterent deal.
the dealership would not budge with the msrp for me either, but i didnt completely try to. i just know that they wont. i would really like to know how i can get them to pay for half of my cargo cage though!! any suggestions or comments!?
can anyone even give me info on how to purchase a cargo cage. my dealership cannot even locate anyone to purchase one or even get a price!!
  • myers77myers77 Member Posts: 7
by the way, if anyone doesnt know, the truck beds are all plastic. fenders and all!! its supposed to be a really great plastic that is indestructable and can withstand lots of abuse. but i couldnt even tell my bed was plastic until i started tapping on the darn thing. i just hope the paint between the bed and the rest of the truck do not fluctuate and differ in color. better on gas mileage though!! :o)
  • davdocdavdoc Member Posts: 2
I also didn't realize the bed was plastic until I got it home and began looking closely (first noticed the gas cap cover was plastic). Let's hope it really is indestructable). The cargo cage was sort of a unique circumstance. When we first looked at the truck (on the showroom floor), there was a cage sitting next to the truck that the salesman said belonged to the truck we were looking at. Actually it belonged to another sport trac they had which didn't have everything we wanted (cloth seats, no running board, 15 inch wheels) and for some reason they had ordered the one we were looking at without one. Well to make a long story short, there was another couple looking at the st we wanted and they had gotten there just ahead of us and decided to buy. We went home and the next day the salesman called to say their credit had fallen through. Well we back in that day and said we would take it if they threw in a cage given the misleading info initially and the hassle with the other guys credit. They settled for paying half. We still have not heard when it may come in ("few days to few weeks").

i was wondering if anyone has leased one of these Sport Trac? If so, what was the down payment, and what is your payment? I am very interested in this vechile, but I am unsure if I can get my hands on one for a reasonably low lease payment.

Just purchased - Sprot Trac - Gold - 2wd - I was able to do better than MSRP - $700 - or $1700 over invoice. - The MSRP on MY truck was 25,005
I Probably could have done a little better but I had already called 12 places and visited 4 ( you just have to be willing to go to a few dealerships. and do so a few times) There will be a dealership that will work with you if you are patient. It only took me 2 1/2 Saturdays. Supply and Demand - if they only have 1 in stock - they probably won't come off MSRP. But The dealership that did my deal had 6 in stock.

It came with an interactive CD ROM - maybe will have some goods info there?? have not looked at it yet.

Can;t wait till I break it in enough to Tow my Boat. !!

The bed of the sporttrack is made out of a Composite material (Fibreglass Reinforced Compression Molded Material) Technically call SMC for Sheet Molding Compound. This product has been placed thru testing that in many cases is more severe than the steel box!!! Typically composites perform better that steel, dont rust, dent, ding are lighter offer better design flexibility. The future for all pickup boxes is composites. The sporttrac is the first with many to follow. It is interesting to note that on Car & driver TV show they quirped that from the cab back is "plastic" and made some reference to it being not as good as steel. So much for objective journalism. Maybe the steel suppliers paid for that ad???? I thought that C&D did research prior to reporting?? Obviously not. Go ahead abuse the composte box and post your thoughts. You will be happy!

Does anyome know if there is a cap for the Sport Trac as of yet or whether there is a manufacturer who intends to produce a cap?
  • bennbbennb Member Posts: 143
The only thing I know of is the tonneau cover that is foldable and lockable. I heard somewhere that they aren't available till April 10th, but a dealer I just called this weekend said they could order them this or next week.

Can anyone tell me if this a fair price for a sport trac (4x4).
Im purchasing the following option goups :
convenience, cloth , premium sport and also cargo cage , moonroof.
Im not getting the leather seats or rear climate/ radio or overhead controls or skid plates.
The dealer will deliver in 2 weeks for $27,924.
The only other cost is tax , tags.

The price sounds to low , when i add the opts to the msrp + cost of advt. and destination its $29,120. Is my math wrong or am i getting a deal??? Thanks

does anyone know if the cage will easily come completly out of the bed? for instance, if I was loading a dresser in the bed and didn't want to lift it OVER the cage.
