Dodge Ram 1500 rear turn signals don't work

I have a 2006 Dodge Ram 1500 2wd and recently started having flaky turn signal problems. They don't work in the rear. After doing much reading online the general consensus was 90% of the time problems with blinkers were due to a bad faulty multi-function switch. I bought one at O'Reily's for $68 and put it in yesterday. It made no difference. Everything else works fine (brake lights, flashers, etc.). Can anyone help me?

Thank you for your help. Your answer was what I was afraid of. And yes, there is a connector for a tow package just under the dash with an empty socket, and a pigtail hanging in the rear. It would be a great help if you could tell me where the fuse is and also the relay for the turn signals. I've checked all of the "recommended places". I can't find a fuse block anywhere. Again, this is a 2006 Dodge Ram 1500, V-6, automatic, all pwr.

WOW, that's what I call an ANSWER! Thank you very much for the detailed information Mr. Shiftright. I had originally accessed the IPM, but the list under the cover did not show any entries for turn signal indicators. I'm going to go back out there and check it all out again. I never noticed any cover held in place with a retaining nut. Mine simply lifted up from the bottom and is hinged on the top. But in any case, you have provide me with a "ton" of information. Your responses indicate you have great depth of knowledge on the subject.
Thank you for your time and effort.

Not really Wally--I just have a good library. I'm no electronics expert by any stretch but I do encourage everyone to be methodical.
